Jill Thorpe Jill Thorpe is a dog behaviourist and trainer that runs regular gundog classes in Marlborough. She lives with her husband Richard, and two dogs Indy and Robyn near Andover. Tell us about yourself I was born in the North East in Darlington, but moved down to Pewsey with my parents when I was still a small child. I used to work in HR, I worked for a large company managing their Customer Service Department and also wage negotiations with the union every year (that was fun!). That company moved its HQ to Crewe, so I moved to work for Ducal the pine furniture people. When they were bought out by Silentnight, I decided to train as a Saddler. (I was involved with horses and Carriage Driving at the time, so not such an odd career change as it sounds). As well as Saddlery, I ran a B&B to supplement our income while my business became established. I carried that on when I changed to dog training. What made you decide to become a dog behaviourist and trainer? A friend I met when I was training to be a saddler introduced me to country sports. She had a black Labrador and I went beating with her on a shoot. Her dog was beautifully trained and the more I saw of her, the more interested I was in having my own dog. My first, called Fern, was a lovely dog - so easy going and a dream to train, I

6

I love seeing the transformation over time in the dogs that attend my gundog training classes. had no problems with her. It was when I got a second dog, Poppy, that I realised not all dogs were so biddable! That was when I sought help from a local trainer, as her behaviour was too difficult to cope with alone. I enjoyed the process of training so much, that after a couple of years I asked if the trainer would like an “apprentice”. Luckily, she was very busy and needed the help. I started working with her, and studying for my qualifications at the same time leading to an Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour and Psychology. I’ve been running my own business for around 4 years now, when my trainer moved out of the area last year I took over the Gundog Training

classes in Marlborough. They’ve been a great success. What do you do apart from the Gundog Training? I offer one to one consultations to help owners deal with specific issues. These can be anything from help with toilet training a dog, to dealing with separation anxiety, or aggression towards other dogs or humans. Generally, problems can be addressed with a single consultation, as long as owners implement the strategies we discuss. I also meet with people who have just brought their puppy home to give advice on how to train them so they don’t develop problems later.

People I understand you’ve just competed at Crufts with one of your dogs? Yes, that was very exciting. Robyn, my younger dog wasn’t ready to go into the field after completing her gundog training, so I thought about doing something different with her. I joined the local dog training society, and went along with Robyn to give Competition Obedience a go. We entered a class at a dog show, just to dip our toe in the water so to speak. To our surprise and delight we came fourth, which qualified us for the next round at Discover Dogs. There we amazingly managed to qualify for the Kennel Club GCDS Obedience Stake Finals at Crufts. The competition is designed for people and their dogs new to competition obedience, and we were thrilled to get through. What was it like at Crufts? It’s a huge show, ranged over several halls at the NEC. We were in a hall with a lot of trade stands as well as competition rings. The atmosphere was electric, with a cacophony of noise from the various trade stands and competition rings as well as the crowds of people. I was extremely nervous, and was on first, which was probably a good thing. In the competition, you are told what tasks to do by a steward, and sometimes it was difficult to hear. There was quite a large audience, and it was all rather intimidating – but we managed to do a very good round – Robyn took it all in her stride, and I remembered to breathe! We didn’t win, but I was proud of Robyn, and loved the experience. We’ll carry on with the obedience training and see if we can qualify again next year.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I love seeing the transformation over time in the dogs that attend my gundog training classes, and seeing their owners’ relationship develop from maybe one of frustration to pride in their pets. It’s lovely when they tell me that they have been complimented on how well behaved their dog is. What would you change if you could? I’d like it to be good weather every time I have a class outdoors! It would also be wonderful if more people came to me when they brought home their puppies, as it is better to prevent problems arising than to solve them after they have become embedded. What do you like to do in your spare time? Now I am doing the obedience training with Robyn it feels like all my time is taken up with dog related activity! I do enjoy gardening – last year I got some professional help planting up my borders and I’m looking forward to seeing everything coming up this year as it matures. I like pottering about in the garden every evening seeing what has come up, what needs deadheading etc It’s very relaxing. I also enjoy cycling, and can’t wait for our holiday later in the Spring. We are going on a cycling holiday in Italy, cycling from Pisa to Florence and back. It’s an organised holiday so there is transport that takes our luggage from hotel to hotel, while we travel there under our own steam. Let’s hope we don’t get lost!

Do you like to eat out locally? We tend to eat nearer home, but I am looking forward to trying out the new Rick Stein restaurant. A lunch time favourite is the Food Gallery which is a great place to meet for a coffee and catch up with friends. What about shopping? Landmark is my favourite shop for working clothes, and for non-working attire I like Luna on the High St. I like it there as they display their clothes by colour. I recently had my colours done with House of Colour and it’s been a revelation – before I was scared of wearing bright colours, but now I know what suits me I’m keen to add some more to my wardrobe. Do you enjoy reading? Most of what I read is related to my work. The last book I read for enjoyment was also dog related, given to me by someone in my gundog training class. Called The Cruellest Miles, it’s the story of how a relay team of huskies made a thousand-mile journey to pick up a new supply of antitoxin to stem an outbreak of diphtheria in Alaska. No other form of transport could get through in the weather conditions. Based on a true story, it was a gripping read. What about music? I enjoy pop music, and go to concerts where I can. I went to see Adele last year, and in the past, I’ve been to see other acts such as Paloma Faith and Take That. Jill is starting a new Gundog Class in May. If you interested in that or need help with your dog’s behaviour, you can contact her on 07901 651663, or visit her website at www.DevelopYourDog.co.uk

Passion P lay almost here! Over the past few weeks and months the Marlborough Community Passion Play 2017 has grown and grown and the project continues to gain energy and momentum!

At 4pm on Saturday 15 April Jesus will set off on horseback along the High Street whilst children and adults from local schools line his route and wave the palm leaves they have made to welcome him. The action will then move into The Parade where the story of The Passion of Christ will be told by actors on one of three stages. The story will include Jesus’ teaching, the healing of the lepers, the story of Zacchaeus the tax collector, the Last Supper, the arrest and trial, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus. We have received, to date, generous grants from a variety of organisations and businesses: thrilling! This is enabling us to build a solid foundation in all areas of the production: sound systems; costumes; programme; video link; publicity…. the list is extensive and continues to expand! There is still time to be involved. We need stewards, we need members of the crowd on and off stage and of course, on the day itself, Saturday April 15 at 4pm, we will need spectators! We are inviting everyone coming to watch to join in being

Volunteers needed

Want to meet people and make more friends? Like to give something back to your local community? Have a couple of hours a week to spare? The Friends of Savernake Hospital and community run a small shop at the hospital. Open 9.30am - 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, it’s there for everyone - patients, staff and visitors. The shop is run by a team of wonderful volunteers who each give around 3 hours a week to keep the shop open, take the trolley on to the ward, and chat with their many customers. They’d love to have more volunteers! It’s the loveliest little shop, packed full of useful stuff, and helps raise funds so the Friends can award grants for local healthcare needs. It also runs a Trolley Shop up on Ailesbury ward each morning, taking newspapers, sweets and smiles to the patients. There are regular Afternoon Tea meetings, a discount at the hospital café, and a free minibus transfer to the hospital from the

The Red Lion, Baydon’s only pub, is in real danger of closing and being sold for potential development as a residential dwelling. A team of villagers have got together to prevent yet another rural pub from closing. The Save Baydon Lion team has already enlisted the support of their local MP Claire Perry, and local Wiltshire Councillor James Sheppard.

“The Save Baydon Lion Team mean business and I am delighted to support their campaign,” said Claire, MP for the Devizes Constituency. “Colin Newbould, the Team’s Chairman and Dave Hanley, its Financial Officer came to the Devizes Big Beer Tasting and Tour hosted by Wadworth Brewery, armed with Save Baydon Lion shirts. As you can see I was more than happy to model the shirt to show my support,” Anyone who would like to register their interest in supporting the Save Baydon Lion Campaign, with practical help and advice or with a view to potentially investing in the Red Lion Community Pub Limited, should visit savebaydonlion.uk or email info@savebaydonlion.uk. “We are determined to make Baydon’s Red Lion a ‘roaring success!” concluded Newbould.

Fly the Commonwealt h Flag On Monday, 13 March 2017 and in common with parishes, towns and cities up and down the country, Marlborough took part in flying a flag to mark Commonwealth Day. In the words of the Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland QC., SecretaryGeneral of the Commonwealth of Nations, Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth is an occasion to acknowledge, publicly and collectively, the continuing aspiration of the Commonwealth to build on common traditions and uphold shared values of democracy, inclusive development, rule of law, and human rights. Councillors gathered on the Town Hall steps in glorious early spring sunshine and the Town Mayor read the Commonwealth Affirmation before the flag was raised above the Town Hall.

Local Elections 2017 This year spring brings us the 4 May elections and newly elected Town Councillors. More and more decision making and services are being driven at a local level so the role of Town Councillor is an increasingly important one. We depend on local people taking an interest in what happens in

their community and whatever their background, standing as a candidate for election. It’s not too late, applications close at 4pm on 4 April. If you are interested, please contact the Town Clerk at the Council Offices. Even if you don’t want to become a local Councillor yourself, by just voting and getting involved you will be helping to make your mark. So, remember to vote on Thursday, 4 May. Last day to register to vote is Thursday, 13 April. More information at www.wiltshire.gov.uk

Your Council Tax Each year Marlborough Town Council calculates the money it needs to provide local services and any projects planned for the year ahead. Then it deducts what it expects to receive from income and external grants leaving a net amount. This is called the precept and the amount collected by Wiltshire Council as a proportion of the total Council Tax paid by Marlborough households. So, for 2017/18 the overall annual Council Tax for Marlborough’s average Band D households is broken down as follows: Wiltshire Council £1,334.63 Marl Town Council £182.67 Wiltshire Police £170.27 Wilts Fire and Rescue £70.59 Total: £1,758.16 The amount collected for the Town Council represents about 10.3% of your overall annual Council Tax. In 2016/17, we have taken on public toilets from Wiltshire Council and, as recently agreed, the Youth Centre at St Margaret’s Mead too.

We have more responsibility for signage and running of community events and may have to consider enhancing litter picking and grass cutting services too as has been done by other Wiltshire towns. No tax rise is welcome, but we are faced with increasing overheads as well as the likely responsibility of additional assets and services. If we are to be ready to do this we need to introduce an increase. We’re working towards delivering more at a local level and so offer better value to the Council Tax payer.

Pride in Wye Gardens Our Grounds Team works hard to make Wye Gardens look is best. This was acknowledged by the RHS South West in Bloom Pride in Park Awards presented at the Palace Hotel, Torquay on 2 March where Grounds Manager, Richard Beale, picked up a 3 star award on behalf of Marlborough for this beautiful public garden.

Kennet Valley Carriage Driving Group This month I went along to meet the lovely people at the Kennet Valley Driving Group, a registered charity affiliated to the Riding for the Disabled Association. During the Winter they are based out of a yard in Lockeridge, and run twice weekly sessions for disabled adult drivers. The group operate two carriages, with two friendly heavy horses to pull them. Drummer, a Clydesdale cob cross, at 22 is the elder statesman of the pair; whilst Perrine, a Comtois mare from France has learned English commands and her carriage driving role very quickly. Importantly, both have very calm temperaments, and are trained to be “bomb proof”. Both volunteers and disabled drivers are very fond of the horses and have a lot of interaction with them. Safety is paramount, which means a lot of people are needed to support the two carriages. Caroline Mitchell, a trustee and one of the RDA whips explains, “For each carriage we have a qualified RDA Whip (driver), another volunteer who rides on the carriage and is responsible for holding the horse’s head when we stop. Escort cars at the front and rear of the carriages contain volunteers who assist during the drive. It’s a real team effort.”

14

Volunteers arrive before the disabled drivers to prepare the horses and carriages (although any who are able to are welcome to help with this part if they wish). The carriages are specially built and can accommodate wheelchairs as necessary, although not all drivers use them. The harness has two sets of reins, and the disabled driver is in control, with the backup of the RDA Whip if needed. There are different types of reins which are helpful for different types of disability.

friends. You can get involved as much or as little as you want – I’ve taken Carriage Driving Proficiency tests, and taken part in competitions. I’ve also been responsible for putting the group’s website together.”

Once everyone is aboard, the drive sets off. On the day I was there we drove up to West Woods, the horses moving at a brisk trot most of the way. I was delighted to be offered the opportunity to have a go at driving, and was glad to have Caroline alongside for support. Perrine was very responsive to voice commands as well as the reins, and I could see the attraction of regular driving.

I thoroughly enjoyed my morning with the group, and was really struck by how much everyone enjoyed themselves, all mucking in together to provide a great morning’s activity. A social highlight of the week for all involved, including me.

Many of the drivers have had previous experience with horses (although it is not a prerequisite), and for some it is an opportunity to extend their involvement with them after having to give up riding. Cat, one of the drivers who has fibromyalgia and osteo arthritis explained what she gets out of it, “It’s very therapeutic, and as well as being something I enjoy doing, it’s just great to get out of the house. It’s a very sociable group, and you make great

The drive gets back to the yard within a couple of hours, and everyone rallies round to remove the harnesses, clean up the horses and the tack and put everything away. This is followed by a cup of coffee and often a very tasty home made cake!

The group costs upwards of £20,000 per year to run, so fundraising is an important job. One of the key fundraising events of the year is the annual plant sale, which this year is on Sunday 23 April at Barbury Racecourse. Why not go along and pick up a plant or two? If you are interested in volunteering with the group, or would like to find out more about carriage driving, visit the website kvdgrda.com or call the Secretary, Maggie Lewis on 07930 341524

Springing forwards or back? As well as the hundreds of passwords that I have for my banking, computer, shopping and anything else IT related, I always struggle at this time of year with the concept of Spring. Now, how does it go? Am I springing forwards or back and, more importantly, will I gain or lose an hour’s sleep? As I recall, I am “Springing forwards” which sounds so lovely and progressive but, sadly, losing an hour’s sleep in the process. Bang goes the lie in before rugby training. I can’t complain however as I have a birthday at the end of October and last year I was most excited to have a 25-hour birthday. Being on holiday with friends at the time, I threatened to make them stay up and celebrate the other hour with me – as it happens, we were all tucked up in our beds and sound asleep as the moment passed. We peaked far too soon on the local cider perhaps. We are just far too old to pull an “all nighter” as we did in the heady days of youth. How much information are we carrying in our heads these days just to get by? It’s a staggering amount, I’m sure. Often, I find myself counting the knuckles on my hand in order to remember how many days in each month – a clever concept which one of my trainees told me. Of course, if you don’t know that version, try the “thirty days have September, April, June and November...” that always

18

comes in helpful too. My memory did let me down when it comes to my daughter’s maths homework, however. In the depths of my brain there was the acronym SOCATOA – what on earth is that? I can’t remember. However, she was doing her maths homework and mentioned sines and cosines and there I was, professing to be a maths genius “Oh yes, that’s SOCATOA” I said, very proud of myself. She looked at me as if I was crazy. I could remember no more than that so was as helpful as the proverbial chocolate teapot in that instance. Maybe geography is more my forte? Ah yes, we all remember studying caves and structures. However, is it “pull your tights up” or “pull your tights down” to remember stalactites and stalagmites? If I recall – it’s tights up, so the stalactites going up and stalagmites going down, or is it? I was at a quiz the other day and my trainee came into her own when she was able to tell us the seventh planet was Uranus by recounting the phrase “my very evil mother just served Uncle Ned poison”. Happily, she no longer poisons

him, just serves him as poor old Pluto has been demoted from planet status. Ned’s had a lucky escape! I’ve never been good at planets, so hope to remember this one in readiness for the next quiz. I suppose that I have to confess also to my dinosaur status when it comes to text talk. Yes, dear reader, I am one of those, and I know I’m not alone, who, for a long time, thought that “LOL” was “Lots of Love”. Now DGMW (don’t get me wrong!), I am all for shortening things and making them easier, but that takes into account the assumption that the answer is at the tip of my tongue and wont take me half an hour to work out – maybe simpler then to state the obvious in the first place? Anyway, time for an early nap to recover from my lost hour… TTFN! Fiona Kellow Fiona Kellow is a working mum of two. Legal

It’s not all about winning Whenever someone is, or about to be, embroiled in a legal claim the first thought is, understandably, “am I going to win?” And, yes, of course that is an important point, but what is of equal importance is understanding what is likely to be won, how and the consequences. I say this because too many people without good legal advice think that they should claim for exorbitant amounts and even if a fraction is accepted by the courts they will have won, the truth is somewhat different, as the recent case of Marathon Asset Management LLP v Seddon and Others shows. Marathon Asset Management LLP brought a claim for misuse of data for a paltry £15 million against two employees who they claimed had copied files and retained them after leaving Marathon’s employment. I will not delve into the details of the claim, but a few details are worth noting. First, the claim succeeded. Well done. Second, Marathon were awarded £2 in damages (£1 from each defendant). Only £14,999,998 short. Not so well done, but still a win. But of course, this win will not have come cheaply; the trial lasted 9 days and the legal work involved in bringing a £15 million claim will have been substantial,

leaving Marathon with a massive legal bill, in the millions no doubt. But they won, so many will assume they can try to claim the majority of their legal costs from the losing side. However, this is where it gets worse, as the general rule is that a party winning nominal damages should pay the defendants’ legal costs, and there can be little question in this case that each defendant’s costs will also have been substantial. Just to drive the final nail in the coffin, in considering the legal costs it came to light that the defendants had made a £1.5 million offer to settle, considerably more than the achieved £2. The judge, Mr Justice Leggatt, called this a “game changer… Marathon’s decision not to accept the offer of £1.5m and instead to pursue a claim for what I described in the main judgment as “jackpot” damages makes it fair, in my opinion, to treat Marathon as litigating thereafter entirely at its own risk and potential cost.”

First, the claim succeeded. Well done. Second, Marathon were awarded £2 in damages (£1 from each defendant). Only £14,999,998 short. Not so well done, but still a win.

32

Mr Justice Leggatt ruled that Marathon should pay all of one of the defendant’s costs from January 2014 onwards, this defendant had admitted liability before and returned all of the files. The other defendant, whose evidence about not copying the files the court had found to have been ‘false’, shall now recover 50% of his costs with regard the initial misuse claim and all his costs from February 2016. Massive sums. The moral is simple, winning is not enough, the importance of being realistic about what is likely to be won, bringing a claim on thatbasis and recognising what constitutes a good offer to settle a claim cannot be ignored in any legal proceedings. Vet’s Column

Dealing wit h epilepsy If your pet has a seizure, stay calm! They will be unconscious and neither in distress nor in pain. While a fit lasts, do not touch them and certainly do not try to force anything into their mouth as you will get bitten. They cannot swallow their tongue and if they bite their tongue it will look horrible but it will heal. Instead, remove anything lying around nearby that might cause injury. Gently move them by using a blanket it they are in a dangerous place such as at the top of the stairs. Turn off radios and TVs and keep their surroundings as dark and as quiet as possible. Ideally your vet should examine your pet after a fit. It is important that your pet is examined to rule out the more common causes of seizures, such as infectious diseases, liver problems, trauma and tumours. If the fit has lasted for only a few minutes it is better to keep your pet quiet for a while before bringing them into the surgery, so as not to stress them out. If a fit lasts more than five minutes or there are repeated fits, then telephone your vet and ask to be seen immediately. Your vet may decide to take a blood sample, X-rays and scan your pet. She may decide to refer them for specialist imaging such as MRI scan or to refer them to a specialist neurologist. Alternatively, she may decide to simply treat them to make another fit less likely. Treatment is often started after the second seizure. Unfortunately treatment comes with side-effects, it involves giving

tablets every day and it is often life-long. Regular blood samples are needed to check drug levels. Unfortunately, the tablets can take a few weeks to work and for that time, the character of your pet can change. But they often return to their former selves after a few weeks and can live a more normal life. Unfortunately, the treatment only reduces the likelihood of another seizure and as the cause is not treated, the drugs do not exclude it from happening again. “Epilepsy happens. It can be dealt with. It is unlikely that your pet will be cured but most will continue to have seizures if left untreated. The careful use of medication will reduce the frequency of seizures and your pet will be able to lead a healthy and happy life. Your pet will not be worrying about when their next seizure is going to happen and neither should you.” The website www.canineepilepsy.co.uk is a fantastic source of information. Your vet should also always be happy to give advice. DroveVets
