M

ajor disruptions were caused by COVID-19 and the subsequent restrictions, especially the restrictions on mass gatherings that include agricultural shows, like the Agritech Show that was cancelled again this year. Good news is that although Agritech has been postponed, you may still visit many of the exhibitors between our pages.

Farmers are used to attending an expo, walk through the exhibitions to see what is on offer, touch and scrutinise the implements on display, and gain information from the representatives of the various companies. Agricultural companies and event organisers are now forced to innovate. Seeing these same products on a screen is just not the same as a real live experience. Luckily, many companies have come up with innovative ways to solve this problem. We experience an increase in the number of smaller events, that will allow them to still showcase their products, but in a safe environment with fewer people at a time. LEMKEN’s recent demonstration of their latest innovation in soil preparation is an excellent example of how companies are finding creative solutions to the problem of restricted mass gatherings. Read more about LEMKEN on page 29. In the meantime, ProAgri and ProAgri Zambia are also working hard to ensure that you, the farmer, can still have access to the latest technological information without being exposed to large crowds. Read our magazines from the comfort of your own home: WhatsApp your name, surname, country, main agricultural activity and e-mail address to +27(0)84-041-1722 in order to receive the magazine on WhatsApp. It will take up less than 15 MB per issue. But if you prefer, you may still pick up a free printed copy at the nearest agricultural store. Farm smartly! Jaco Cilliers jaco@proagri.co.za

Bayer shapes the future of agriculture through innovative products

mproving production and profits while minimising expense and effort is every farmer’s goal. Bayer understands this and continuously develops products that will enable a farmer to achieve these goals. That is why Bayer introduced new crop protection products to the agricultural market. These products are specifically focussed on the tobacco and cotton industry and were brought to Zambia after being applied successfully in other African regions. With the introduction of SIVANTO Prime and Vayego 200 SC, the farmers of Zambia will be able to effectively control sucking and chewing pests on their tobacco and other crops. How does it work? Each of these crop protection products was specifically formulated to target certain pests on crops such as tobacco and maize. The reason for the specificity is to minimise the risk to beneficial insects such as bees. • Sivanto Prime was developed to target aphid infestations in tobacco crops. The active ingredient is Flupyradifurone, which was derived from the Asian plant, Stemona japonica. The SIVANTO Prime penetrates the xylem and the phloem of the plant cells. When the insect inserts its proboscis, it gives a bad taste and causes the insect to stop feeding quickly. Thereafter it affects the central nervous system of the insect, causing paralysis. This ensures that the aphid will not be able to move to a different plant once it has come into contact with the active ingredient of SIVANTO Prime, thus limiting the spread of damage to the plants, as well as diseases that are carried by these pests from one plant to the next. SIVANTO Prime works fast and has a quick feeding cessation effect on the insects. The results of tests showed a significant decrease of

up to 99% in aphid activity within the first five days after initial application. Vayego 200 SC proves to be highly effective in budworm control. It reduces plant damage as a result of lethargy, paralysis, rapid feeding cessation and eventual death. It is a plant mobile insecticide that is suitable for application by foliar spray against larval or adult pest stages, but also by drip/ drench application.

How should it be applied? SIVANTO Prime insecticide can either be applied as a foliar spray or as a drench application. Vayego 200 SC can also be applied effectively as either a foliar spray or a drench application. What is the recommended application rate? • The recommended application rate for SIVANTO Prime is 200 ml per 100 ℓ of water per hectare. Therefore, on 5 hectares you will mix 1 ℓ of Sivanto Prime on 500 ℓ of water. • The recommended application rate for Vayego 200 SC is 38 ml per 100 ℓ of water, making it an economical pest control product. On a 5-hectare field you will therefore mix 190 ml with 500 ℓ of water. To calculate the mixing rate for your farm, you multiply the recommended application rate by the number of hectares to be sprayed. You also multiply the hectares with the quantity of water that is recommended by Bayer. Once you have mixed the correct quantity of water with the correct quantity of the product; you can spray it onto your crops. Depending on the size of your farm, it would be wise to have a large mixing tank so that you will be able to get a consistent mix with every application.

ProAgri Zambia 63

Photo: gazettenet.com Can I use it on maize and vegetables? Legislation dictates that an insecticide should be registered for use on specific crops against specific pests. This is in order to control the use of harmful chemicals and to ensure that pesticides are not overutilized and cause threats to people and the environment. In Zambia, SIVANTO Prime and VAYEGO 200 SC have been registered for use on tobacco plants specifically. However, in other areas of the world, these products have been used on a variety of crops including maize and various types of vegetables with great success. Is it safe to use the crops after spraying? Yes, provided that the instructions on the product label are followed correctly. For each crop protection product there is a minimum time that must pass before the plants can be safely used by humans. This is normally referred to as the PHI on the product instruction pamphlet and indicates the period that has to pass from the last date of application before the plants can be harvested safely. Where can I buy these products? Bayer Zambia has several distribution points throughout the country, and also supplies products to other distributors within the agricultural industry. Novatek gives tips on fish farming: Stocking and stocking density by Robert Kanyembo, Aquaculture Research and Development Manager, Novatek Animal Feeds Zambia

Extensive fish farming This is the level of least management in which there is low capital injection with the least yield per square metre. Under this level, we recommend stocking densities of 3 to 5 fish per square metre because fish depends more on natural food than supplementary feeding. Labour and investment costs are low and involves large systems with less fish. Semi-intensive fish farming Under this management level, care is taken in the production system to raise fish at a higher stocking density in a smaller area or volume. Moderate investment is made, and as such, supplementary feeding is given as well as natural feeding provided by pond fertilisation. The stocking densities ranges between 5 to 8 fish per square metre with frequent water exchange. Intensive fish farming Intensive fish farming involves fish stocked at higher densities of between 8 to 12 fish per square metre and above, and fish fed wholly on manufactured feeds. A significant effort is made to en-

T

he topic of how much fish should be put in a production system has been of a growing concern and somewhat a detriment to aquaculture development. Many are the times fish farmers complain that their fish are not growing as they should or ask why fish die after attaining a certain weight of around 120 g and above. This is because around this stage, the biomass in the growing system would have increased as a result of increase in the average body weight of the fish stocked. Stocking by definition is the introduction of fish species into either a limnological (natural lake) or artificial system such as ponds, tanks, or cages. Stocking density relates to how much fish or weight is added per square area or cubic metre in a production unit. Stocking involves replenishing of limnological systems such as rivers, lakes, oceans, and streams to improve the dwindling fish numbers due to overfishing or natural elimination. In this context, stocking in aquaculture refers to introducing fingerlings into either ponds, cages, or tanks. It is very important therefore to understand how much fish to stock in your system and why. How then do you arrive at how much 4

fish do you stock per production system? The answer lies in your level of management. Management plays an important role in how much fish to stock per production system. In aquaculture or fish farming, there are basically three management levels that include extensive, semi-intensive and intensive, while others also include integrated fish farming.

Poorly managed fishpond.

Fish and rice farming.

Paddlewheel aerator. Photo: aquaculturealliance.org. sure water quality is kept in check and aerators are also used. Aerators provide dissolved oxygen in the production system to support the higher stocking density. In fish cages with constant water flow or better water quality, stocking densities are as high as 200 fish per cubic metre.

Extensive

3 750

Semi-intensive

6 000

Intensive

9 000

Integrated fish farming Integrated fish farming involves the raising of fish alongside agriculture crops such as rice, mushrooms, sugar cane or vegetables. To explain this in plain language; let us look at a common fishpond size of 25 by 30 m. This gives us an area of 750 square metres. If we compare the different stocking densities, the following variations can be observed. Extensive 750 m2 3 750 fish Semi-intensive 750 m2 6 000 fish Intensive 750 m2 9 000 fish The same area of 750 sq/m can have different stocking densities based on the farmer’s financial investment and management. Many times people ask me with how much fish should they stock their ponds. In reaction I always ask, what else is provided by their production systems. This will help to determine the appropriate stocking level for the fish farmer as we have explained in summary. Wrong stocking density has ripple effects that may include overstocking, stunted growth and often fish mortalities. Farmers are often tempted to put in more fish than their ponds or cages can support. Putting in more fish does not imply high yields unless the correct management measures are followed. Management is vital in fish farming success.

The three different management methods of fish farming: A: Extensive; B: Semi-intensive; C: Intensive. For more information, please contact Robert Kanyembo at +260-971252-522, +260-97-8779016 or send an e-mail to fish.ta@novatek.co.zm

Liquid gold: The importance of colostrum in new-born calves Article supplied

C

olostrum is the natural and most important defence mechanism against disease for new-born calves. An adequate quality and quantity of colostrum fed to calves promptly leads to higher performance, immune success, and reduces economic losses. To ensure efficient, high-performance calf rearing, one of the critical success factors is correct colostrum feeding during the initial 24 hours of the calf’s life. “Unlike humans, there is no immune transfer from cow to calf across the placenta, which means new-born calves are completely reliant on their mothers' colostrum immediately after birth to provide them with the necessary antibodies they need to fight diseases,” says Volac Global Technical Manager, Ian Watson. Mr Watson recommends that calfrearers should always pay attention to the four Qs of colostrum feeding: Quantity New-born calves should receive the first feed of four litres (or 10% of the calves’ body weight) within the first four hours of birth; this should then be followed by an additional two litres within 12 hours of birth. Consider

feeding all calves using a bottle and teat to ensure the calf has consumed enough colostrum. If a calf should refuse to suck, use a stomach tube. Quality Colostrum quality varies significantly between individual cows and heifers. For example, dilution effects often lead to high yielders producing lower quality colostrum, and short dry periods can also reduce colostrum quality. Quickly Antibodies are absorbed at a high rate soon after birth. The quicker you get colostrum into the new-born calf the better. The concentration of antibodies in colostrum is at its highest immediately after calving, and it decreases every hour after birth. sQueaky clean Cleanliness is vital when harvesting and storing colostrum. Colostrum is an excellent medium for bacterial growth at room temperature and can quickly become contaminated in the absence of sound hygiene practices. Store any colostrum that has not been used in the fridge within an hour.

TAKE A MOMENT

TO REFLECT.

Poor colostrum management negatively affects calf development and future production. “If bacteria are allowed to multiply in colostrum, it will compromise antibody uptake by the calf, or worst-case scenario, feeding contaminated colostrum can cause sickness, diarrhoea and even death,” says Mr Watson. If your herd has issues with calf health, it is well worth checking out your colostrum management and feeding protocol. Test colostrum quality with a colostrometer and/ or BRIX refractometer, and also ask your veterinarian to test the immune status of your calves. In next month’s issue we shall look at methods to measure colostrum quality. Stay tuned for more. Nutribase is the market leader in feed supplements for Africa. Fish farming part 2: Sampling the catch S

ampling is the process of weighing fish to determine the growth rate and performance. Fish sampling involves taking weights and measurements such as body length, and the weight of the fish population. A sample represents an entire population and therefore should be large enough to detect any variations. At farm level, monthly sampling is ideal, although the shorter the time between samplings, the better the results. The best time for sampling is in the morning or evening. At least 5 to 10% of the total population should be sampled to represent the entire population of fish. Importance of sampling: • Helps in observing the growth trends of fish. • Helps to estimate the total weight of fish in the water. • Feed depends on the total weight of the fish and therefore, sampling helps to determine the quantity of feed needed for the pond. • Helps to calculate feed utilisation. • Sampling helps to determine the condition of the fish in respect of health status, and growth rate. What to do before the day of sampling: It is important to plan well in advance to ensure that the sampling process will be successful. This includes setting the sample date and determining what material and personnel will be required. Make sure you obtain all the required tools for sampling in advance.

Sampling tools include the following: • Seine net with the proper mesh size. • Fish basket or bucket. • Weighing balance or scale. • 4 large basins. Count the number of total mortalities before sampling and subtract from the total number at stocking.

Smaller fish nets are used to scoop the fish into buckets.

The Namulela Youth cooperative team. For example, if the pond was stocked with 5 000 fish, and mortalities were 1 000 before sampling:

Members of the Namulela Youth cooperative team placing the fish into buckets with clean water before weighing and measuring the fish.

5 000 – 1 000 = 4 000 fish Sample size = 5 x 4 000 = 200 100 fish will be sampled. Sampling procedure: • Seine/scoop the fish from the pond. • Put the fish into the buckets with clean water. • If weighing the fish individually is

not possible, then weigh in groups of 10 or more in the bucket or basin with water, take them out, weigh the bucket and water and subtract from the gross weight. This can be done until the number of fish required is achieved. Upon completing the task, calculate the average weight of the fish and estimate the total weight of fish in the pond by multiplying it with the estimated number in the pond.

For example: If 50 fish weigh 2 000 g then the average weight is: ABW = 2 000 = 40 g 50 When not to sample from a pond: • When fish are at risk and showing signs of extreme stress. • When there is lightning during a rainstorm. • Directly after rain. • When the water quality is poor. The Namulela Youth cooperative in the Chanyanya Kafue district scooping fish from the ponds using a seine net with proper size mesh, ensuring that a large enough sample is collected, representing the entire fish population.

Sampled fish from the ponds are weighed on an electronic scale. Weighing can be done on either a weighing balance or scale.

Water wise farmers build earth dams: Part 7

The core of the dam and construction methods T

he core must consist of the densest available material at the site, such as clay. The material must be moist and well compacted or rolled in thin layers of uniform thickness. If the clay is too wet, the wall will be unstable. The different layers must be built up consecutively as quickly as possible. The core is built up in the centre of the wall for maximum compression, symmetrical sagging and for the best connection with a possible pit wall. Cross sections must remain constant over the entire length of the main wall to prevent unequal sagging. The core must be of sufficient length as the site dictates. Treating a permeable dam basin • Lay a thick blanket over the entire basin as indicated in Figure 1. • If the basin is extremely porous, lay a layer of soil beneath the blanket. • If the soil in the basin consists of sand, clay and silt, plough 250 mm to 300 mm deep when moist

Build up the earth wall uniformly in layers of 100 mm to 250 mm thick and compact the soil thoroughly to ensure maximum density. For permeable building soil, the layers must not be thicker than 250 mm and for clay soil, not thicker than 100 mm. The wall should be built slightly concave in cross section and horisontal or convex in the length of the wall. The subsequent layers must not differ much in texture and thickness, and must be built up over the entire length of the wall. Change the routes of heavy machinery over the wall to ensure good compaction, or use special implements. The soil against the shoulder wall, key wall, cut-off walls and around the pipes must be selected dense material and must be thoroughly compacted by hand or mechanically in thin layers at optimum moisture content. All concrete or masonry work must be sloped slightly on the earthwork side to ensure proper compaction of soil against it. Take care that heavy implements do not damage concrete works.

The entire base of the wall is then ploughed again. The coarse surface ensures a good joint between the floor and the building material of the wall. The key trench is then excavated. The key trench is dug on the centre line over the entire length of the wall. The bottom width of the trench for a tractor dam scoop is approximately 3 m. The depth is usually 0,6 m to 1,0 m in the firm soil and the side slopes a minimum

of 1 : 1. The purpose of the key trench is to prevent seepage between the original soil and the soil of the dam wall. The soil in the cut-off trench can be used for building the wall. The actual building of the wall can be started on the coarsely ploughed floor next to the key trench, after it has been moistened and thoroughly consolidated. Building soil taken from the dam basin must be taken from at least two locations on both sides of the water course. The loading locations must first be prepared. The humus rich topsoil is also kept aside for the final rounding off of the wall. The haulage circuit must be planned thoroughly in a route forming a figure of eight as clearly demonstrated in Figure 3. Heavy implements at work building a dam wall.

Use of a tractor and scoop for building earth dam walls The following explanation rests on the assumption that the foundation is dense and the building soil of good quality. According to measurements indicated on the plan, the base that will be covered by the wall is carefully marked on the site with firmly planted, easily noticeable pegs. The first step in the construction, as mentioned before, is the clearing and preparation of the base of the dam wall. Trees and shrubs are removed. The base is then ploughed, and the entire layer of humus is removed. A depth of 200 to 300 mm is usually sufficient. This humus rich material is kept away from the building activities, usually directly downstream of the wall. It is later placed over the entire wall as a final layer.

Figure 3: The building cycle.

Remove and keep any humus far away from the wall during construction.

Plant kikuyu grass all over the dam wall to stabilise it. The following points are important to ensure efficient and economic work: • If the building soil at the loading location is hard, it must first be broken with a heavy plough or if possible, with a ripper. If practically possible and feasible and if the moisture content of the soil is too low, wet the soil at the loading location thoroughly beforehand. It is a more efficient method than wetting the soil on the wall. • Always fill the scoop slope downwards. It ensures full loads and requires less power. By loading slope downwards, a desirable mixing of the soil, which may differ at various depths, is obtained. • Load in thin, equal layers, usually 200 mm thick, on a straight route. • Plan and do excavations and wall fillings in such a way that good drainage is always ensured in case of unexpected rains. • Load as quickly as possible without overloading the tractor. Load only until the scoop is full. • Eliminate all unnecessary turns. • Gear changing must be done as quickly as possible and the correct gear must be selected. Avoid very steep routes. • The road from and to the borrowing area must be well planned and adhered to. The distance to travel must be as short as possible without steep slopes, dips, wet patches and turns, and must be level and hard. The benefits of a good hauling route are as follows: Minimum wear of the unit, comfort for the driver, higher speed and less kilowatt needed because of lower rolling resistance, while more cubic metres of soil per hour can be moved. • •

14

Good compaction is obtained by continuously adjusting the path of the implements over the wall. As previously mentioned, the layers must not be thicker than 100 mm to 250 mm, (preferably only 100 mm thick). The layers must be placed as shown in Figure 4.

• •

Animals near the dam can pose a problem.

Ensure good joints between old and new layers after interruptions. Moist soils usually reduce the power needed to load the scoop. Therefore, avoid too wet or too dry soils.

Settling of the earth wall Provision must be made for gradual settling of the dam wall during construction. Even if the wall is built under favourable conditions, namely of good building soil with the correct moisture content, thoroughly placed and compacted, there will still be a measure of settling of the wall, which is in direct relation to the wall height and represents about 5% thereof. If building conditions on the farm are not that favourable, then it is better to build the wall 10% higher. The construction height of the wall must therefore be sufficient to ensure the minimum total board for which the dam was designed after settling of the wall and foundation. Protection of the earth wall Every earth wall is subject to deterioration because of rain, wave action, trampling, and wind erosion. Precautions must be taken against deterioration: • Round off the wall in all cases. It prevents concentration of water on the wall. • If the climate is favourable, cover the wall 0,2 to 0,3 m thick with a layer of the humus rich topsoil from the base of the wall and the dam basin, which was kept aside. Fertilise this upper layer and stabilise vegetation such as kikuyu grass to protect the earth wall against rain drop erosion, run-off, and wind erosion. No trees or shrubs should be planted on or near the wall. If such a tree would die, its roots will rot and will leave pipes that can lead to seepage and failure of the wall. • In dry regions, where efficient plant establishment is not possible, cover the wall in its entirety with a 150 mm layer of gravel and stone. • One of the following methods can be used to protect the water side

of the wall against wave actions: • Cover the surface with a layer of gravel 150 mm to 200 mm thick and pave with stones. • Design and build the wall with a flatter waterside slope. Cover the surface with a layer of humus-rich topsoil and stabilise suitable vegetation such as kikuyu on it if the climate is suitable. Also protect the bare borrowing locations against erosion, especially outside the dam basin. Stock should have no access to the dam site, including the outlet terrain and basin of the dam.

Next month we shall look at the connection between an earth wall and a weir, and the enlargement of a dam. Published with acknowledgement to the ARC Agricultural Engineering for the use of their manuals. Visit www.arc.agric.za for more information.

Zambian Pig Genetics: TN70 sows will push profits

N

ew and enhanced genetics is like a fresh breeze for every farmer and we salute the scientists who went through painstakingly precise, experimental processes to ensure that farmers can farm easier and more profitable. The piggeries in Africa will rejoice in the arrival of the TN70 genetics, developed by Topigs Norsvin, a worldfamous Dutch pig genetics breeder. The TN70 already showed significant improvement on the TN60 predecessor in the countries where it has been introduced. Built on our global research, innovation and absolute commitment to integrity and biosecurity, Topigs Norsvin’s close partnership approach means your farm benefits directly from their experience, energy and passion. Topigs Norsvin was the first breeding company to implement selection for piglet survival in its balanced breeding programme. Their vision is a sow that can rear many high-quality, fast growing piglets all by herself. Zambian Pig Genetics (ZPG) has been distributing Topigs Norsvin genetics throughout Central Africa since 2015. Outside Zambia, they serve countries such as the Congo, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Angola and others in the region. Their genetic stock is specifically suited to the central African environment. They recently introduced the TN70 to the African market with the support from Topigs Norsvin South Africa. The TN70 is a cross between the Topigs Large White and the Norsvin Landrace. She has excellent mothering skills and is a highly prolific, easy in

use sow with an amazing weaning ability and a top contribution to finishing pig quality. She produces large litters of strong, uniform piglets that excel in fast, feed efficient growth, and carcass quality. The TN Tempo Boar needs no introduction and together with the TN70, extraordinary offspring is guaranteed. TN Tempo brings robustness, uniformity, fast growth potential, and excellent carcass qualities to the table. The TN70 is an excellent mother which strengthens these qualities by contributing the best feed efficiency to the finishers, compared to any other sow in the world. There is no doubt that the TN Tempo and TN70 combination offers you the potential to produce the highest output at the lowest cost. Independent researchers also agree on the outstanding abilities of the TN70. The Danish University of Aarhus concluded that this breed has excellent mothering skills while simultaneously producing the same number of weaned pigs per litter with fewer resources. This just proves the strengths of Topigs Norvsin's TN70 sow, as already experienced by many farmers all around the world. The further findings of the study were: Piglets born from a TN70 sow are, on average, 264 grams heavier at birth, which makes them stronger and less vulnerable to hypothermia. TN70 sows have enough teats to feed their offspring and so the piglets have a higher chance of surviving and developing properly. This all results in a higher weight at weaning.

The internationally bred TN70 pig that thrives in Africa. ProAgri Zambia 63

TN70 sows are world renowned for their mothering skills and high weaning percentage.

Reinke makes farmers' dreams come true The farm Welgelegen near Oyster Bay has been the Strydom family’s home since 1904. Johan Strydom tells how his father's dream to set up a pivot here came true. There is sufficient wind to power the wind turbines in the background, but not enough wind to topple a Reinke centre pivot.

need not worry about the pivot's service. "If something goes wrong or if I need advice, Franco Nel is always available to help," says Johan. Reinke is well known for their unique centre pivot structure. It is designed to be the strongest possible structure with the smallest quantity of steel. Therefore, the farmer does not pay for unnecessary steel in the structure and gets the best value for the purchase price of the pivot. Beyond the unique design, Reinke pivots are manufactured from hightensile steel, which is light but strong. They are also designed to keep the structure's centre of gravity as low as possible to prevent the pivot from toppling over in strong wind. To ensure durability, all the steel parts are properly galvanised to provide protection against corrosion and weather. "Because the pivot is so

t has always been my father's dream to set up a pivot on the farm," says Johan Strydom of JDW Strydom Boerdery near Oyster Bay in the Eastern Cape. The Strydoms have been farming on the same farm, Welgelegen, since 1904. After thorough research, Johan Strydom decided to set up a six-tower Reinke centre pivot to provide sufficient grazing for his dairy cattle throughout the year. The pivot has an 18-metre overhang and keeps a total of 44,3 hectares of grazing green, wet, and nutritious throughout the year. The Strydoms plant a mixture of oats, ryegrass, sorghum and kikuyu under the pivot. The pump is powered by a 37-kW motor that delivers enough power without excessive use of electricity. "The service we received from IrriAgri made the difference,” says Johan. They were involved in the whole process from planning to erecting the pivot. They also helped to install the power line and three transformers that provide the pump and pivot with power." Johan enjoys the comfortable, effortless control that the Reinke Advanced Plus management system provides. The pivot and pump switch on and off automatically at the times that Johan pre-programmed. The radio control system allows Johan to enjoy the full benefits of the Reinke Advanced Plus control box, without being dependent on cell phone signal. "The system is easy to use," Johan says. "There's nothing I have to struggle with. The quality of the pasture is constant and reliable, which means that our milk production is also better. That is the difference that Reinke's pivot makes on the farm." Since Johan erected the pivot in 2020, no repairs were needed. Apart from ensuring the gearboxes are filled with oil, the tyres are properly inflated, and the bearings lubricated, Johan

Omnia: MAXI GREEN™ ensures the right maize nutrition for healthy plants and stable yields by Kobus Smith, Omnia Fertiliser, Zambia

P

lant nutrition can be a complicated subject, especially since the needs of the specific crop, the nutrient source, as well as the climate and soil of the region must be considered. However, if you find the right combination of products to address the needs of a specific crop and a specific region, this process becomes much simpler and will yield more reliable results.

CUSTOMER: DESIGN:

Let us look at what a maize plant needs to grow healthy and give a good yield: • Nitrogen is needed by young maize plants to boost early growth to develop in a strong and healthy plant. Responsible for good growth and green colour. A maize crop requires 20 kg/Ha N for every tonne of grain produced. • Phosphorus is essential for the development of a strong and healthy root system. Good roots help the plant to better tolerate water shortages. Maize requires 7 kg/Ha P for every tonne of grain produced. • Potassium plays a big role in the transpiration tempo of the leaves and the water usage, thereby improving the water usage of the plant. It also assists the plant in dealing with salt stress. Maize requires 5 kg/Ha K 2O for every tonne of grain produced. • Sulphur is important in the forma22/06/2020 WOVEN BAG WPP

tion of proteins and in the formation of chlorophyll. Deficiencies have a great influence on crop yields. The maize plant needs 3 kg/Ha S for every tonne of grain produced. Zinc and Boron – these micronutrients are needed in small quantities by the plant, but are important in disease resistance, plant health and crop yields.

All of these in one product Omnia has recently launched a new product, specifically for Zambian maize growers, that contains all these elements in the right quantities to ensure a good maize crop. MAXI GREEN™ contains the following nutrients: • Nitrogen (18% N) in the ammonium nitrate form. Ammonium nitrate is the superior N source as it is more plant available and will not escape into the air like urea tends to do. • Phosphorus (11% P2O5) as Nitrophos, which also contains nitrogen. This source is completely water soluble and is immediately available for plant uptake. • Potassium (8% K 2O) as potassium chloride. • Sulphur (4%) • Zinc (0,4%) • Boron (0,2%)

A few important factors have to work together to ensure a healthy maize plant.

How to apply MAXI GREEN™ As basal fertiliser, we recommend 250 kg (five bags) of MAXI GREEN™ per hectare. This should be followed by 200 kg (four bags) of GREENSULF™ per hectare as a top dressing. GREENSULF™ contains ammonium nitrate nitrogen, as well as calcium and sulphur. These recommended rates will ensure enough nutrients to yield at least four tonnes of maize per hectare, if enough water (rain) is available and a good pest and weed control programme is followed. In summary MAXI GREEN™ is a superior plant basal fertiliser specifically formulated for Zambian maize producers. It contains nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, boron and zinc and supplies all the required nutrients in the correct ratios. It improves yields when used as a basal fertiliser in combination with GREENSULF™ as a top dressing. Use MAXI GREEN™ and GREENSULF™ for a healthy and GREEN maize crop and reap the rewards!

Irrigate fields from anywhere using FieldNET technology Lindsay’s FieldNET irrigation management platform allows farmers to control their irrigation operation remotely. It offers exponential savings in time, natural resources like water and labour, thanks to its advanced technology. Globally, Lindsay aims to help farmers save more than 700 billion gallons of water and more than one billion kilowatt-hours of energy by the year 2022 through FieldNET.

indsay’s FieldNET products are revolutionising the way in which farmers are approaching agricultural irrigation. This remote irrigation management solution has won several global awards for its use of the latest technology to enable farmers to grow better. Globally, it is estimated that farms using smart technologies to manage their irrigation operations save up to 40% in resources. This makes sense, as FieldNET can lead to a saving in time, water and labour. Gone are the days of having to send out teams of workers to drive from field-to-field to check up on a pivot. FieldNET is so intuitive, that it can pick up potential issues before they even arise. If a pivot does encounter an issue, FieldNET can be set to try and overcome it on its own. If it cannot, it will alert the grower so that a team can be dispatched to attend to the problem. Virtually no irrigation time is lost in this scenario. One of the most impressive features of FieldNET is that it offers farmers a single, easy-to-use platform to monitor their pivots in real-time. Through state-of-the-art tracking technology, a farmer simply needs an internet connection and smart device to easily track the position and irrigation progress of their pivots. When monitoring pivots through FieldNET, growers

can also easily control their irrigation equipment. For instance, a pump can easily be switched on and off with the click of a button. A pivot can be turned off or programmed to perform a certain irrigation cycle from anywhere in the world using FieldNET. Farmers are often faced with the tough question as to how much their crops should be irrigated and when this needs to happen. Calculating this can be time-consuming and tedious. There is, of course, also room for human error which could lead to inefficient decisions. FieldNET seamlessly integrates with FieldNET Advisor to create an irrigation plan for each field on a farm, based on information such as crop type, soil conditions and weather patterns. These plans can automatically be sent to a farmer’s pivot and be executed with the click of a button. FieldNET has the additional benefit of storing all in-field irrigation data in the cloud. This way, a grower can easily access their irrigation records when planning future irrigation strategies.

A case study by Lindsay in the United States of America found that a field using FieldNET Advisor to determine when and how much to irrigate saw a 17% saving in pumping costs and water usage, while increasing yield.

Reece Andrews, Lindsay's FieldNET and Zimmatic Controls Product Manager with two awards from ASABE. One for FieldNET Advisor and the other for Pivot Control Lite.

FieldNET can work on any brand of pivot, no matter its age. This is because it can be retrofitted on older-generation equipment. There are various pieces of hardware available that integrate FieldNET with a farm’s equipment. This includes ultra-low

ProAgri Zambia 63

cost-effective solutions like FieldNET Pivot Watch, which is an excellent option for all those interested in taking the first steps in technology. It’s a product the customers can install and configure by themselves. Other solutions are more comprehensive, like FieldNET Pivot Control and FieldNET Pivot Control Lite. Zimmatic, Lindsay’s pivot brand, also produces advanced irrigation control panels. These panels boast FieldNET as a pre-loaded application and can also work on any pivot, no matter age or brand. FieldNET can be connected with auxiliary equipment like pumps and weather stations to gain additional data and make even more accurate recommendations. Some farmers might be concerned about how to get their pivots online, as an internet connection at equipment is essential for the proper functioning of FieldNET. Lindsay has developed several options to connect pivots into the FieldNET platform, as cell phone signal, radio and Ethernet. This ethernet solution extends an existing internet connection to a farmer’s pivot so that it can get online and connect to FieldNET.

If you would like to learn more about the FieldNET technology, you can visit our website. FieldNET is available from all of Lindsay’s dealers. To locate your nearest dealer, visit www.lindsay.com.

Staalmeester celebrates 70 years of agri excellence

taalmeester, one of South Africa’s pioneering agricultural machinery manufacturers, is celebrating 70 years of excellence and impact in 2021. This important milestone affords the company the opportunity to celebrate their founding, reflect on the years of success, revel in the sense of community that has been forged and excitingly imagine the next 70 years. “A lot has happened since 1951, and as we look back on our journey it becomes evident that our combined passion for agriculture and manufacturing has contributed not only to our

sustainability but also our status as a preferred and reliable mechanisation partner for small and medium farmers,” says Martin Coetzee, Managing Director of Staalmeester. Going from strength to strength Staalmeester was founded by PML (Meester) Coetzee in 1951 with the purpose of supplying farmers in central South Africa with well-made agricultural equipment. Today, this vision represents the Staalmeester legacy. Throughout the company’s journey, the Coetzee family has played an

integral role and saw three generations joined together by the quest for excellence and impact. During the late 1980’s the proverbial business baton was passed on to Martin Coetzee, Meester’s son, who strategically positioned Staalmeester to become a household name. In 2012 the reigns were taken over by Martin (jr). Today, Staalmeester is a subsidiary of Senwes Equipment and boasts 108 products on offer, sources and imports agricultural equipment from 11 countries and exports to 18 countries. “Over the past seven decades, many changes took place globally, and our country has seen a lot of positive change. Despite this, we live in an era where things are not always built to last, and society consume a lot and throw away even more. I believe that within this reality, Staalmeester has impacted the agricultural sector by manufacturing and sourcing reliable and sturdy agricultural equipment,” says Martin (jr). When asked what he views as the company’s most sought after qualities, Martin (jr) says that Staalmeester prides itself on being an expert in the field of affordable and reliable agricultural equipment. The company furthermore conducts its business through a well-established and diverse network of dealerships and workshops. Fully exploit your tractor power:

Work 9,5 m wide with LEMKEN's new Rubin 12 F

armers buy bigger, stronger, and smarter tractors to work faster, wider, and better, but to accomplish these actions, farmers need implements that can do the work faster, wider, and better. Implements and tractors should fully complement one another. There is no point in having a 400 kW tractor with the most advanced technology on the market, but the only implement strong enough to use with it dates from a previous generation. "Other disc harrows that you can use with large tractors such as this 9560R are tandem implements," said Karel Munnik of LEMKEN SA, during a demonstration on the South African highveld. These tandem units' depth control and transport wheels are placed between the discs. This is a disadvantage since the wear and tear on the moving parts are extremely high due to the dust and soil particles moving around in that area. The LEMKEN compact disc harrow that was demonstrated to the farmers, is the brand new Rubin 12, which has an impressive working width of 9,5 metres. LEMKEN's Rubin 12 is no unknown sight on the Highveld. The 3 to 7 metre implements have been in the country since 2014, but now farmers can also use an 8 or 9,5 metre wide variant,

that can easily cultivate vast fields of land with the correct tractor. The working depth of the Rubin 12 ranges from 7 to 20 cm (measured behind the rollers) at a working speed of 7 to 13 km/h. The discs themselves are 736 mm in size for deep cutting. The wheels of the Rubin 12 do not touch the ground at all when working in the field; they are only used to turn and for road transportation. The rollers control the working depth at the rear of the unit and on the drawbar. The front height of the implement can also be adjusted using a hydraulic system. Karel says: "An additional problem of older disc harrows is that there is no proper mixing of the residues into the topsoil as with the Rubin 12. The Rubin 12's front set of discs cuts the soil and material, whereafter it is thrown against a set of rakes. During the process, the soil and materials are mixed before being cut and mixed again by the next set of discs. Finally, the rollers form a firm, smooth seedbed." In this seedbed, the planter can cut in a true V, ensuring that each seed is placed perfectly for equal germination and a better yield. Placing the cut residues in the topsoil means more humus that breaks down faster, feeds the soil, and improves the structure of the soil. The discs are

The bearings of LEMKEN discs are maintenance-free and properly sealed. More than 2 600 discs are running on farms in South Africa, and only 40 bearings are sold on average per year from the local spare parts store. mounted at 16 degrees on the front set and 14 degrees on the rear set in the working direction. The vertical angle of both sets of discs is 20 degrees. It is important to successfully cut a lot of material and blend it well into the soil. Another big difference that LEMKEN's technology offers, is that the discs maintain their vertical angle of 20 degrees, even if they wear down. Older generation disc harrows (offset and tandem) obtain a 20 degree angle by making the discs more cone-shaped, like a porridge bowl. When these discs wear over time, their angle of intrusion into the soil becomes flatter. "Compact disc harrows are here to stay," says Karel. "Nothing else can compare with its working speed and efficiency of seedbed preparation." Both the 8 and 9,5 metre Rubin 12 have a fixed beam in the middle with folding wings on the sides. The 8 m folds up to 5,5 m and the 9,5 m model to 6 m to enable road transport. Since the implements do not meet the road transport requirements of Europe (limited to 3 m width) they are only sold in Canada, America, Russia, and South Africa. Like all LEMKEN equipment available, the implements are fully supported by the experienced LEMKEN technical team. For more information on the major benefits that LEMKEN's implements hold for your farm, contact Karel Munnik on +27 82-412-2577 or k.munnik@lemken.com; or Blackie Swart on +27 82-4049651 or b.swart@lemken.com, or visit www.lemken.com.

LEMKEN's new 9,5 metre Rubin 12 was demonstrated on a farm near Middelburg in the highveld of South Africa. The implement folds up to a width of only 6 metres. The wheels are only used for road transport and turning at the end of the land, and therefore do not compact the land or churn up dust. Working depth is controlled with the rollers. Isuzu Drivetrain:

Driving the support of Isuzu trucks I

suzu is well known throughout Southern Africa for their reliable trucks and bakkies, but all things mechanical need support. Isuzu Drivetrain was established in 2017 as a dedicated factory facility for the repair and remanufacturing of Isuzu truck drivetrains. Isuzu Drivetrain is uniquely positioned to provide the best advice and competitive pricing. Explained quite simply, the drivetrain is all the parts that transmit the engine power onto the road. In this case the transmission (gearbox), propshafts, differential, and sideshafts. The whole Isuzu truck range is catered for at Isuzu Drivetrain’s premises. N- and F- series with AMT (Automated Manual Transmissions), ZF, as well as the mighty Allison gearboxes, are serviced. Front and rear differentials are repaired in a dedicated area. Isuzu Drivetrain operates through the extensive Isuzu dealer network in South Africa, and into Southern Africa. Based in Jet Park, Boksburg on the East Rand, Isuzu Drivetrain serves customers in all corners of the region with a special courier service, ensuring items are transported daily, with the shortest delivery period in South Africa. Parts are sourced directly from the Isuzu PDC (Parts Distribution Centre) in Port Elizabeth, ensuring quality parts backed by Isuzu SA.

All work carries a one-year warranty. All items are stripped and paraffin bathed to remove all dirt and residues, allowing for accurate and thorough evaluation. Each gearbox or diff is methodically repaired or remanufactured following SABS ISO 9001 2015 standards and processes. Each transmission is dynamometer (dyno) tested in the workshop before being released. Warwick Wright, Marketing Manager, ISUZU Drivetrain, says: “Our belief is that a quality product ensures the reliability and longevity of your Isuzu truck.”

Isuzu Drivetrain is headed by Andy Scott, a pioneer in the gearbox and diff industry, with decades worth of experience that he passes on to the workshop staff. “Among our focuses, we believe in growing our staff through ongoing training ensuring Isuzu Drivetrain continues to be part of the Isuzu family,” says Warwick. Exchange your gearbox Growth is also a key focus, with most of the large fleet operators using Isuzu Drivetrain as their preferred partner. Downtime is a potentially crippling part of any fleet. Tens of thousands of Rands can be lost daily in the transport business if vehicles are not operating

properly. Loss of income, undelivered goods and fixed costs mean that service exchange gearboxes that can get you running in a jiffy are the answer. These are ready-built gearboxes and diffs, quality checked and run, ready to be dispatched. These units come at a set cost, but their purpose is to lower the time of stripping and quoting on a failed unit. Within an hour a unit can be dispatched , and if you consider the time and money this option saves, the choice is obvious. Each item is secured to a pallet, preventing damage, and can be shipped anywhere in the region. Warwick says: “We are proud of our association with Isuzu SA, a Level 1 BBEEE company, and wear our badge with pride.” The workshop is AA, MIWA, SABS ISO 9001 2025, SANS and RMI approved. Farmers driving Isuzu bakkies are also not left out in the cold. For 2021 Isuzu Drivetrain has expanded into the LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) or bakkie range, including the Isuzu Frontier, KB, D Max, and MUX in the product line-up. Isuzu is with you for the long run. Phone +27-11-8236628/1791 to make Isuzu Drivetrain your support partner for your fleet. 31

With large corporates making factory production of tyres redundant, smaller players are entering the market to supply stock, directly influencing job cuts and increasing the role of logistics in the logistics value chain. Pressure on Cape Town Port has lessened due to the pandemic and ships being unable to travel. Much of the sea freight cargo appears to be routed via Durban Port which has improved service levels after a long battle with service failures and delays. The continuation of stable food supplies in South Africa to supply the domestic markets, as well as neighbouring countries remain under pressure due to a variety of factors, which include the ongoing drought in certain areas, political uncertainty, unrest and trucks being continually attacked, which has had an impact on transit times due to trucks only being able to travel during the daylight hours. With huge challenges in the food supply, less purchasing power due to job losses could affect sales. The resulting economic downturn would be lower prices and the ultimate creation of employment in the long run. South Africa is once again the financial leader in the continent. Nigeria fell back after the country surpassed the South African economy in recent years. The Nigerian gross domestic profit contracted by 6,1% in the second quarter of 2020. The only difference is that the spikes are inserted by hand. Our unique design insures that the spikes can be inserted with ease as it enters the bag from the side and goes over the wool. The build-in scale is optional.
