Luxury Real Estate and a Luxury Car Requires a Luxury Garage oesn’t it make sense that if you have a luxury car then you wouldn’t want to park it in a dilapidated garage? That’s what Italian car-maker Maserati believed, and thus launched their Design Driven competition. The winner of the existing garage design was Holger Schubert who created a 1200 square foot “living room” for the car. With views over western Los Angeles, access to the Maserati’s home is over a mini-bridge. Inside the minimalist white walls and huge windows allow for an open and naturally-lit space. In addition the room has a library, living area and mini-kitchen, all powered by the solar panels on the roof.

The Oldest Known Champagne Discovered

R

ecently divers discovered a unique kind of buried treasure whilst exploring amongst the remains of a sailing ship in the Baltic Sea: 30 bottles of champagne! Said to be approximately 230 years old, making it the oldest in the world, the champagne bottles were found at a depth of approximately 180 feet, and whilst the bottles were not labeled, their cork had the word “Juclar�, from its origin in Andorra. The bottles were likely part of a consignment sent by King Louis XVI of France to the Russian Imperial Court and after sampling

it, the champagne house Moet & Chandon have stated that they are almost certain that it is the product of Veuve Clicquot. Avocado, Mango Walnut Salad

A

light, healthy and Summery dish this Avocado, Mango and Walnut Salad is exceptionally tasty.

Ingredients 2 Avocados, peeled and sliced 2 Mangos, peeled and sliced 1/2 Cup Walnuts 3 Bacon rashers, finely chopped 1 Mignonette Lettuce DRESSING 1/4 Cup Olive Oil 2 Tbsp Lemon Juice 1 Tsp French Mustard 1 Tbsp Thickened Cream

Method Cook bacon in pan until crisp, or place between paper towel and microwave for 3 minutes. Arrange avocado, mango, walnut and bacon pieces over a bed of lettuce on a platter. Top with dressing. Dressing: Combine all ingredients in screw top jar and shake well. Tip To Peel Mangos: With a sharp knife slice the two cheeks off the mango, cutting each cheek off close to the stone. With a dessert spoon scoop the cheek flesh away from the skin, keeping the spoon close to the skin and keeping each cheek whole.

eep in the heart of Tuscany in Italy lies a true gem, Castello di Casole. A hotel surrounded by many restored farmhouses that have been restored to exquisite taste. As you can imagine, the hotel restaurant presents some amazing dishes, and to celebrate Marquette Turner’s involvement in the sale of the properties, we’re also going to share some of the amazing recipes. This panna cotta with chocolate sauce dessert is a “taste” of things to come. Ingredients

Method

FOR PANNA COTTA 1 litre of liquid cream 4 tablespoons of sugar 1 teaspoon of vanilla 4 small sheets of gelatin 1/4 cup of warm water

Panna Cotta: Sprinkle gelatin over water in a small bowl and let stand to soften. While the gelatin softens, combine cream, sugar and vanilla and warm over low heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and add gelatin mixture, stirring until dissolved.

FOR CHOCOLATE SAUCE: 200 grams of dark chocolate, chopped 15 grams of butter 1.5 cups milk

Pour mixture into molds and chill, cover, until firm for at least 8 hours. Chocolate Sauce: Mix chocolate and butter in a double boiler until melted into a smooth liquid consistency. Slowly add milk, stirring continuously until blended and smooth. Cool slightly before pouring over panna cotta. Unmold and Serve: Run thin, sharp knife around inside edge of each ramekin to loosen. Dip bottom of ramekin in bowl of very warm water for about 6 seconds. Put plate over ramekin, then invert panna cotta onto a plate, gently lifting off ramekin. Repeat to unmold remaining panna cottas. Top each with Chocolate Sauce and serve.

Marina Bay Sands in Singapore is World’s Second Biggest

T

he belief that bigger is better is probably one that will never leave mankind. Taking this onboard, gaming behemoth Las Vegas Sands of the US has just opened the world’s second biggest casino in Singapore. At a cost of $5.5 billion USD, the “Marina Bay Sands” is expected to generate annual profit close to $1 billion USD. All of the 2,560 hotel rooms at the casino-resort are open, as are parts of the shopping malls, some of the restaurants, exhibition centre and events plaza. Delays were caused by the global financial crisis which in turn affected material and labour shortages. Recently the skypark and additional shops have opened and later this year a museum, theatre and more stores will be launched. The resort will also include Southeast Asia’s only Universal Studios movie theme park, hotels, restaurants and convention facilities. Incidentally, the world’s largest casino remains MGM Mirage’s City Center in Las Vegas. 44

Where the British are Buying Investment Property

he British are renowned for their penchant for purchasing investment properties outside of the British Isles, and a survey featured in The Telegraph stated that at present 430,000 properties overseas have British owners. The most popular locations are France and Spain with a 25% share. An additional 25% are located throughout Europe. 75% of homes cost less than £300,000. Of further interest, two-thirds of owners who let their property said 2009 bookings were considerably higher than those in 2008. In 2009 sales fell by 80%, having already fallen 22% in 2008. The desire to purchase in so-called ‘exotic’ locations, such as Cape Verde and Egypt, has fallen, however, standard favourites such as Spain and Portugal remain popular, with

the US (notably Florida) and Italy close behind. A further survey in Britain recently stated that, of those interviewed, four in ten are considering purchasing property overseas, primarily for the benefits of the weather. With purchases having fallen so significantly over the last few years, this could be good news for many markets. As far as Australia is concerned, recent immigration figures suggest that Australia is also becoming less attractive for the British. Even though the UK accounted for the second largest number of immigrants to Australia in the year to June 2009, their numbers dropped seven per cent to 21,600 people for the year. The exchange rate between the pound and Australian dollar is a highly significant reason for this.

The Most Expensive Cities in the World

ondon has long been the most expensive city in the world. 2009 sees Oslo in Norway claiming the top spot, in the the new UBS rankings.

So why the big drop? Well, the Pound’s huge devaluation is a major factor which permeates through the whole economy. Oslo in Norway, however, more recently claimed the top spot in the new UBS rankings – the second and third place cities respectively. So if London has previously now been too expensive for you to visit, then maybe now is the perfect time to plan your travels.

Increase in Numbers of Foreign Investors in US Real Estate

A

recent survey of the National Association of Realtors in the USA found that in the 12 months to March 2010, agents saw a marked increase in the interest of foreign buyers. Whilst still down from the lofty heights of 2007 when 32% of agents reported contact with foreigners, figures were up 5% to 28% in the 12 months surveyed. Furthermore, actual purchases in the period jumped 6% to 18% which represented $66 billion USD of property, or approximately 7% percent of the total market. Just four states, Florida, California, Arizona and Texas, accounted for 53% of all purchases. Canada remains the source of the most overseas buyers, whilst Mexico moved into second place with 10% of the buyers, replacing the UK, which fell to 9%. Additionally, the median price paid for property fell from $247,000 to $219,000 USD. The figures suggest that foreign buyers, witnessing a depressed US housing market, were bargain shopping, and there were plenty of bargains to be had. And with credit being harder to come by, with more hoops to jump through, there’s no surprise that 55% of foreign buyers purchased in cold, hard cash.

ractional ownership, also known as co-ownership, as a model for property ownership is becoming increasingly popular throughout the world. It is, however, still sometimes confused with Time Share. Therefore, it is important to clear up any confusion. With a Time Share, you are not actually buying a property but buying the right to spend time in a home. So if the property increases in value you have no right to any of that capital gain and, with the ease of finding cheap accommodation on travel websites these days, the benefit of paying for time share has been very much eroded. Fractional Ownership, on the other hand, means that owners purchase a freehold title in a particular residence. This presents an excellent opportunity to purchase a second/vacation home in a cost-effective manner. Think of it like this – if you only plan to spend 10% of your time at the property, why be saddled with 100% of the costs?

There is little reason to pay 100% of the cost of the vacation home when you will only get the benefit from it for a fraction of the year. Or, to look at it another way, you may not have the capacity to live full time in a $10million home but you might be delighted to spend 35-36 days each year and pay $1million to enjoy the benefits. With the National Association of Realtors in the United States reporting that the average use of second homes in the United States is approximately four weeks annually, such a concept makes great sense. You then have access to use any residence of the same type, providing greater flexibility and availability as well as benefitting from any capital increase in the value of the property. And, with such ownership, you can of course sell your deeded interest at any stage. The added plus point is, with a lower price point, there is a larger pool of potential purchasers.
