April is the year’s hottest month and the one in which plenty of time is spent relaxing in air-conditioned spaces. Unfortunately for yours truly, during March and April, when most people’s electricity bills spiral out of control, I was travelling around to various tropical locations. Chiang Mai people may complain how severe the hot weather is; and I am no different. But it’s nothing compared to the weather in central Thailand, such as Tak or Sukhothai. When visiting here as soon as I had ĂŒPKUJGF VCMKPI C UJQYGT + YCU KPUVCPVN[ EQXGTGF CICKP KP sweat even though I was standing in front of a fan going at full blast. When you’re on the sunny streets of Malacca, the Malaysian city on the equator, locals live with never-ending sweat all year round, except those who spend all day in department stores. As this is a similar solution applied back home, I wondered whether this is the only way to TGNKGXG QPGUGNH QH VJG UVKĂ?KPI UWOOGT JGCV! 6JG SWGUVKQP became more pertinent when I got to Singapore where people live with air-conditioning all day, in both private and public places. I thought of Libya, one of the hottest countries in the world, nowhere near as rich as Singapore and where air-conditioning is far from being readily affordable.

Sometimes, I think just sitting under a tree along the river to get a fresh breeze is enough; however, over the past few days this seems like nothing but a remote fantasy. I’m actually afraid that the sustainable way of dealing with the summer is air-conditioning; and that’s a very scary prospect. P.S. As I travelled around Mae Rim (which is our theme of May Issue), its hilly places with thick forest can often make one forget about air-conditioning from time to time.

We are in the age of online. People may not need to meet but can work together. So this gallery will be a bridge. I make it as best as I can. The space is limited because I don’t have much money but it can grow endlessly in the online world.

NHD ART GALLERY NHDアートギャラリー

This compact size gallery (10 sq.m.) collects art, designs, sketches, printed arts and illustrations. NHD Art Gallery is owned by Anukun Hamala, a native Chiang Mai graphic designer and his partner Kittiya Moonsarn. Four years after his shop Nokhookdesign opened, he decided to open a space to show off his works as well as some of his friends. “Many customers often ask me ‘Are there any other shops selling original designs in Chiang Mai?’ and I realized that there aren’t many designer shops here, especially from graphic designers like me. Most of my friends work at home or in a private studio. So I wanted to make a space where other designers could showcase their work. It will serve as an index so if you like someone’s work, you can contact them directly,” said Anukun. “I hope it can act as a vehicle to sell alternative kind of arts like illustrations or character designs. It could also house some mad products by famous or unheard of artists. They sell their work and they get money, that’s the way to prolong art and artists’ lives. Right now the gallery is showcasing an exhibition; it’s kind of an experiment. I’m asking people to send their works on A4 paper: all kinds of work are accepted. I collect them in an e-book and printed books as well. Open daily 1-7 p.m. except Sundays 50 Rachamankha Rd. Soi 6, T. Phra Singh Muang Chiang Mai Tel. 08 6195 6677, http://www.nokhookdesign.net

PHRATHAT BATHING CEREMONY ăƒˆăƒ‰ ďźˆăƒ‘ă‚´ăƒ€ďź‰ ĺ…Ľćľ´ă Žĺ„€ĺź?

After the traditional Thai and Lanna New Year known as Songkran Festival ends, Lanna Buddhists complete a bathing ceremony for Buddha relics, following the similar concept of Songkran Festival where people pour water on their elders and parents to show their gratitude and respect. Bathing Buddha images is held during VJG HWP ĂŒNNGF YCVGT ĂŒIJVKPI RGTKQF DWV VJG RCIQFCU or Phrathat, and Buddha Relics must wait until later. The history books say that Lanna kings would always travel to Phrathat Hariphunchai to bathe Buddha relics, as this was in the former Lanna capital Lamphun and the Phrathat was the prominent sacred place of the city (though the capital was moved to Chiang Mai in 1296, the kings still visited Lamphun for the ceremony), and thereafter it became a tradition followed by locals to travel to bathe a Phrathat. As the Buddha relics are located under the Chedi, it’s impossible to bathe them directly, so people pour water onto the Phrathat or the pagoda. Also, as the Phrathat is too big for people to pour it from the top, a pulley is therefore used to carry water up above the Phrathat. It’s a cute folk intellect. About the Red Dot

At the entrance, a Glass Rotunda is surrounded by numerous screens showing a feature video of recent Singapore around the wall.

Some call it the ‘Little Red Dot’, the name is an epithet for the nation of Singapore. It describes the manner in which the main and subsidiary islands comprising the Republic, with a small total land area, are marked on many world maps. Originally, it was apparently used to refer to Singapore in a disparaging manner by former Indonesian President B.J. Habibie (though this was denied), but has come to be used by both Singaporean politicians and ordinary citizens with pride and a sense of the nation’s success despite its physical limitations. 10 Singapore dollars for an adult, and 5 for a EJKNF KU XGT[ KPGZRGPUKXG VQ ICKP GPVT[ VQ VJG OQFGTP renovated site of the original 19th century Victorian building and see things that happened throughout 5KPICRQTGÂżU JKUVQT[ 6JG DWKNFKPI JCU VJTGG Ă?QQTU CPF C DCUGOGPV UGEVKQPGF KPVQ UKZ RGTOCPGPV GZJKDKVKQPU CPF QPG QT OQTG URGEKCN GZJKDKVKQPU /QUV KORTGUUKXG is the History Gallery where various techniques are used to tell the stories of Singapore.
