Tra il 1911 e il 1913 Amedeo Modigliani abbandona la pittura e si dedica alla scultura. Sono gli anni in cui l’artista livornese mette a punto un’inedita sintesi fra elementi della tradizione e originali accenti figurativi. L’unicità del progetto espositivo del Mart si concentra sul corpus delle sculture di Modigliani. Come pochi altri protagonisti delle avanguardie artistiche del novecento, Modigliani coglie le suggestioni della storia e le intreccia con un linguaggio personale. Infatti, la scultura arcaica, medioevale e rinascimentale, e poi la scoperta dell’arte orientale e tribale, attraverso le ricerche di Picasso e Brancusi, sono per Modigliani uno straordinario campo di riferimenti per l’avvio di un rivoluzionario percorso creativo. Le sue sculture hanno una purezza avvolgente e forme enigmatiche, come ha dimostrato Ambrogio Ceroni che per la prima volta, nel 1965, ha catalogato l’opera di Modigliani scultore. Delle 25 sculture identificate da Ceroni, solo 15 oggi appartengono a collezioni pubbliche, mentre le restanti sono disperse o conservate presso inaccessibili collezioni private. Con questa mostra il Mart intende offrire un nuovo contributo ad un aspetto centrale della vicenda artistica di Modigliani, l’artista che amava definirsi “più scultore che pittore”.
Between 1911 and 1913, Amedeo Modigliani abandoned painting and devoted himself to sculpture. These were the years in which the Livorno-born artist created a fresh synthesis between traditional elements and original figurative accents. The uniqueness of Mart’s exhibition lies in concentrating on the corpus of Modigliani’s sculpted work. Like few other protagonists of the artistic avant-gardes of the 20th century, Modigliani looked back to history and wove it into his own personal language. For Modigliani, archaic, medieval and Renaissance sculpture, together with the discovery of Oriental and tribal art through the work of Picasso and Brancusi, provided an extraordinary field of reference for the launch of his own revolutionary creative development. His sculptures have an appealing purity and enigmatic forms, as demonstrated by Ambrogio Ceroni who, for the first time in 1965, catalogued Modigliani’s sculptural works. Of the 25 sculptures identified by Ceroni, only 15 belong today to public collections, while the rest are scattered or preserved in inaccessible private collections. With this exhibition, the Mart intends to offer a new contribution to a central aspect in the artistic life of Modigliani, the artist who defined himself “more a sculptor than a painter”.

Si tratta della prima mostra museale di Alessandro Roma (Milano 1977) che si inserisce nel programma Contemporanea, con il quale il Mart seleziona e promuove le opere di giovani artisti nazionali e internazionali. Alessandro Roma lavora con il collage, tecnica a lui prediletta per la creazione di paesaggi fantastici, dove la prospettiva si appiattisce e il segno si perde nell’intreccio di forme e colori. Attraverso la costruzione di paesaggi mentali, immaginarie peregrinazioni personali, l’artista è interessato ad esplorare i confini della tradizione pittorica, preservandone le tematiche classiche ma allontanandosi dalle tradizioni tecniche e formali. Alessandro Roma lavora sull’indefinito, gioca con la percezione, le sue opere fuggono la forma rigida mentre memoria e fantasia si confondono vicendevolmente. In occasione della mostra al Mart, Alessandro Roma presenta una serie di collages e sculture.
This is the first museum exhibition of the work of Alessandro Roma (Milan 1977), forming part of the Contemporanea programme, in which the Mart selects and promotes the works of young national and international artists. Alessandro Roma works with collage, a technique he favours for the creation of fantastic landscapes in which perspective is flattened and the line is lost in a maze of forms and colours. Through the construction of mental landscapes, imaginary personal peregrinations, the artist is interested in exploring the borders of painting in tradition, preserving the classic themes but distancing himself from the technical and formal traditions. Alessandro Roma works on the indefinite, playing with perception, and his works evade rigid form while memory and fantasy blend into one another. For the exhibition at the Mart, Alessandro Roma is presenting a series of collages and sculptures.

La mostra monografica di Olivo Barbieri (Carpi 1954, uno dei più importanti artisti italiani contemporanei) comprende dieci fotografie di grande formato e un film in alta definizione di dodici minuti. Il progetto è stato ideato e realizzato dallo stesso Olivo Barbieri, Trentino Marketing, Mart e Provincia autonoma di Trento nell’ambito delle iniziative volte a promuovere a livello internazionale il riconoscimento da parte dell’Unesco delle Dolomiti Patrimonio Naturale dell’Umanità. Olivo Barbieri racconta le montagne come “architetture progettate”. Le Dolomiti esistono da duecentocinquanta milioni di anni, e il materiale che le compone viene da abissi oceanici. Barbieri le interpreta come forme simboliche in movimento, e nella linea delle vette rivede una “storia della terra capovolta”. “I paesaggi marini, le grandi cascate, le montagne e i centri storici – dichiara Olivo Barbieri – sono fragili parchi a tema. L’intrattenimento ha virtualmente sostituito il sublime. Il vedutismo delle megalopoli può per dimensione e considerazione competere per importanza, nell’immaginario umano, con la natura.” Il lavoro di Barbieri invita quindi a una riflessione sull’ambiente e l’ecosostenibilità di queste straordinarie architetture naturali.
The monographic exhibition of the work of Olivo Barbieri (Carpi 1954, one of the most important contemporary Italian artists) comprises ten large-format photographs and a high-definition film lasting 12 minutes. The project has been planned and realised by Olivo Barbieri himself, by Trentino Marketing, Mart and the Autonomous Province of Trento as part of the initiative aiming at promoting recognition of the Dolomites as a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Olivo Barbieri describes mountains as “planned architecture”. The Dolomites have existed for the past 250 million years, and the material of which they are formed originated in the depths of the oceans. Barbieri interprets them as symbolic, moving forms, and in the line of the summits sees a “story of the world seen upside-down”. “Seascapes, great waterfalls, mountains and historic towns”, declares Olivo Barbieri, “are fragile theme parks. Entertainment has virtually replaced the sublime. Views of megalopolises can, by size and consideration, compete with nature in the human imagination, in terms of importance”. Barbieri’s work invites the observer to reflect on the environment and the ecological sustainability of these extraordinary examples of natural architecture.

Il Mart porta in Italia i grandi capolavori del Musée d’Orsay, vere icone della storia dell’arte tra fine ’800 e primi del ’900. The Mart is bringing a series of icons from the late 19th and early 20th-century history of art, masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay, to Italy. Thanks to the exceptional partnership between the Mart and the Musée d’Orsay, it will be possible for the first time in Italy to see the most famous works of the impressionists and post-impressionists (Monet, Renoir, Degas, Seurat, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin) and of other leading artists from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century (including such as Courbet, Fantin-Latour, Puvis de Chavannes, Bonnard, Vuillard and Denis). The exhibition, conceived and curated by Guy Cogeval, president of the Musée d’Orsay, and Isabelle Cahn, and with the scientific direction of Gabriella Belli, director of the Mart, will offer a fresh look at the moment of transition towards modernity: from the birth of impressionism to the developments of the postimpressionist poetics serving as a prelude to the revolution of the avant-garde movements. The exhibition will be divided into 8 thematic sections: The artist is no longer alone, The outcast artist, Places of impressionism, Parade, The inner listening, Family, Male/female, Earthly paradise, stressing the deep bonds between the art and artists of the time and their culture.

Il progetto di Rosa Barba proposto per la sua prima personale in un grande museo d’arte italiano, nasce dalla collaborazione tra il Mart e la Fondazione Galleria Civica - Centro di Ricerca sulla Contemporaneità di Trento. La mostra costituisce un inedito intreccio di competenze fra le due istituzioni, che in questo modo avviano un dialogo affascinante sulla sperimentazione artistica contemporanea. Le singole opere, tutte espressamente prodotte dall’artista per questa eccezionale occasione espositiva, comunicheranno l’una con l’altra, fino a comporre nel loro insieme un’installazione filmica, testuale e sonora, simile a un balletto meccanico futurista, i cui singoli protagonisti sono presentati simultaneamente su un’unica scena. Per mettere a punto il progetto ospitato al Mart, Rosa Barba ha tratto ispirazione da una serie di documenti conservati presso gli archivi storici del Museo e in particolare studiando una serie di sceneggiature, mai realizzate, di Fortunato Depero. In occasione della doppia mostra di Rosa Barba al Mart e alla Fondazione Galleria Civica di Trento, l’editore Hatje Cantz pubblicherà la più completa monografia dedicata finora all’artista.
The project by Rosa Barba offered for her first personal exhibition in a major Italian museum arises from the collaboration between the Mart and the Fondazione Galleria Civica - Centro di Ricerca sulla Contemporaneità di Trento (Civic Gallery Foundation - Contemporary Society Research Centre of Trento). The exhibition comprises a new combination of competence between the two institutions, launching a fascinating dialogue on contemporary artistic experimentation. The single works, all made expressly for this exceptional occasion, will each communicate with the other, so that the whole composes a film, text and sound installation similar to a Futurist mechanical ballet, with the single protagonists presented simultaneously on a single stage. In order to finalise the project hosted at the Mart, Rosa Barba has drawn inspiration from a series of documents preserved in the Museum’s historic archives, and in particular by studying a series of set designs by Fortunato Depero that were never realised. For the double exhibition of Rosa Barba at the Mart and at the Fondazione Galleria Civica di Trento, the most complete monograph dedicated to the artist will be published by Hatje Cantz.

La ricca raccolta di opere della VAF-Stiftung in deposito al Mart nasce dalla passione del collezionista tedesco Volker W. Feierabend, che ha orientato i suoi interessi sui capolavori dell’arte italiana del Novecento. Negli ultimi anni la sua attenzione si è rivolta anche ai giovani artisti, grazie alla fondazione del Premio internazionale Agenore Fabbri. Ideale prosecuzione della mostra realizzata al Mart nel 2005, dal titolo Un secolo di arte italiana, questa nuova esposizione si divide in due diverse sezioni. La prima è dedicata ai protagonisti di movimenti artistici quali il Gruppo Nucleare o il gruppo Tempo 3, attivi tra gli anni Cinquanta e gli anni Ottanta. La seconda parte della mostra presenta le opere degli artisti emergenti selezionati per il Mart dallo stesso Volker W. Feierabend nel corso delle ricerche compiute per le edizioni del Premio internazionale Agenore Fabbri.
The rich holdings of the VAF-Stiftung on longterm loan to the Mart have grown from the passion of the German collector, Volker W. Feierabend, who has focused his attention on the masterpieces of Italian art of the 20th century. In recent years, the collector’s attention has turned also to young artists, through the creation of the International Agenore Fabbri prize. The ideal continuation of the exhibition organised by the Mart in 2005 entitled A century of Italian art, this new exhibition is divided into two different sections. The first is dedicated to the protagonists of art movements like the Gruppo Nucleare and the Tempo 3 group, active between the 1950s and the 1980s. The second section of the exhibition presents the work of emerging artists selected for the Mart by Volker W. Feierabend himself during the work undertaken for the editions of the International Agenore Fabbri prize.

Dopo la grande mostra dedicata a Paolo Vallorz nella sede di Palazzo delle Albere a Trento nel 1994, in occasione della prima importante donazione delle sue opere al museo, il Mart presenta ora, nella sede di Rovereto, oltre cento opere tra dipinti e disegni che ricostruiscono il suo intero percorso artistico. Paolo Vallorz, nato a Caldés nel 1931, è uno dei più importanti pittori nati in Trentino nel Novecento. “Sono nato tra gli alberi multicolori della Val di Sole – ha scritto l’artista – valle baciata da acque limpide e fresche. Ho fatto la mia esperienza informale e concettuale, ma me ne sono ritratto avvilito e scontento. Sono ritornato alla vita, alla natura, ai fiori”. Prima di dedicarsi alla pittura di paesaggio, Vallorz ha studiato all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, all’Ecole du Louvre e all’Accademia Libera di Montparnasse, frequentando artisti e critici del calibro di Ives Klein, Alberto Giacometti, Alberto Burri e Pierre Restany. Paolo Vallorz vive a Parigi, ma torna ogni estate tra i colori e i profumi delle sue montagne.
In the wake of the major exhibition dedicated to Paolo Vallorz at the Palazzo delle Albere site in Trento in 1994, and on the occasion of the first important donation of his works to the museum, the Mart is now presenting over 100 works – paintings and drawings – portraying his entire artistic development, at the Rovereto site. Paolo Vallorz, born in Caldés in 1931, is one of the most important expressive painters of the Trentino of the 20th century. “I was born amidst the multicoloured trees of the Val di Sole”, the artist has written. “A valley kissed by clear, cool waters. I have had my informal and conceptual experience, but portrayed myself as dejected and unhappy. I have returned to life, to nature, to flowers”. Before dedicating himself to painting landscape, Vallorz studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, at the Ecole du Louvre and at the Académie Libre of Montparnasse, frequenting artists and critics like Ives Klein, Alberto Giacometti, Alberto Burri and Pierre Restany. Paolo Vallorz lives in Paris, but returns every summer to the colours and scents of his mountains.

Olimpia Ferrari (Roma, 1980) vive e lavora a New York. Ha conseguito il Master of Fine Arts in Advanced Photographic Studies alla Bard University-ICP nel 2011. Nel suo lavoro usa la fotografia per interpretare la memoria e la ricerca dell’identità. Nei suoi ritratti multipli si avverte una forte tensione tra anonimato e individualità. Il privato è nascosto dietro il pubblico, e il senso di identità diventa il prodotto di una manipolazione. L’artista gioca liberamente con la narrazione per far emergere la miriade di fantasie, eventi e connessioni presenti nel cumulo di immagini stratificate nella nostra mente. Olimpia Ferrari (Rome, 1980) works and lives in New York. She graduated with an MFA in Advanced Photographic Studies at Bard University – ICP in 2011. In her work photography is used to interpret memory and the search for identity. A strong tension between anonymity and individuality can be felt into the multiple portraits. The private is hidden behind the public and the sense of identity becomes a product of manipulation. She plays loosely with narratives to sort out myriad fantasies, events, and connections present in the image bank of our head.

Il Mart presenta una grande esposizione dedicata a Gino Severini, organizzata in collaborazione con il Musée de l’Orangerie di Parigi. A oltre vent’anni dall’ultima rassegna monografica dedicata all’artista, la mostra intende riportarne la figura al centro del dibattito artistico presentando per la prima volta a un pubblico internazionale la sua opera completa. Protagonista del movimento futurista, Gino Severini svolge un ruolo fondamentale come punto di contatto tra l’arte italiana e francese nel periodo delle avanguardie e, successivamente, del ritorno al classico. Nato a Cortona nel 1883, dopo gli anni trascorsi presso lo studio di Giacomo Balla a Roma, Severini compie la sua formazione tra l’Italia e la Francia, dove si trasferisce nel 1906. La ricerca divisionista, che si fonde con l’influenza del pointillisme, è alla base della sua originale interpretazione del futurismo. Il linguaggio dell’avanguardia italiana si incrocia a sua volta in maniera determinante con le suggestioni del cubismo e dell’orfismo. A partire dalla metà degli anni Dieci, Severini è tra i protagonisti della stagione del “ritorno all’ordine”, di cui pone le basi con la straordinaria Maternità del 1916, cronologicamente vicina alle opere di Picasso nell’anticipare la

tendenza di un nuovo classicismo che toccherà tutta l’Europa. I legami con la Francia sono presenti costantemente durante tutta la carriera dell’artista, a partire dal testo Du Cubisme au classicisme. Esthétique du compas et du nombre, pubblicato a Parigi nel 1921, fino alla sua vicinanza, negli anni Trenta, al gruppo Les Italiens de Paris. La mostra intende ricostruire l’itinerario artistico di Severini attraverso una selezione di circa ottanta opere, provenienti dalle più importanti collezioni pubbliche e private italiane e internazionali.

The Mart presents a major exhibition dedicated to Gino Severini, organised in collaboration with the Musée de l’Orangerie of Paris. Over 20 years after the last monographic exhibition dedicated to the artist, this exhibition intends returning the artist to the centre of the artistic debate, presenting his complete œuvre for the first time to an international public. A protagonist of the Futurist movement, Gino Severini played a fundamental role as a point of contact between Italian and French art in the period of the avant-garde and, successively, of the return to classicism. Born in Cortona in 1883, after his years of study in the studio of Giacomo Balla in Rome, Severini completed his training in Italy and France, to which he moved in 1906. The study of Divisionism, broadly influenced by Pointillism, underlies his original interpretation of Futurism. The language of the Italian avantgarde in turn encountered the lessons to be offered by Cubism and Orphism in a way that would prove epochal. From the middle of the 1910s, Severini was one of the exponents of the “return to order”, for which he laid the foundations with his extraordinary Maternity of 1916, which in terms of date was close only to Picasso in anticipating the trend towards a new classicism that would affect all Europe. artist’s career, starting with his text published in Paris in 1921, Du Cubisme au classicisme. Esthétique du compas et du nombre, and moving forward to his closeness in the 1930s to the Les Italiens de Paris group. The exhibition aims to reconstruct Severini’s artistic evolution through a selection of about 80 works from the most important public and private Italian and international collections.

Il Mart continua a rivolgere il proprio sguardo ai vari linguaggi del contemporaneo con la mostra monografica di Diango Hernández. Nato a Cuba nel 1970, Hernández vive e lavora a Düsseldorf: utilizzando vari media, dall’installazione al disegno, dalla scultura alla pittura e al video, fa confluire nel proprio lavoro la rappresentazione personale della vita quotidiana, mostrandone il legame con la sfera socio-politica e con l’arte. Cresciuto a Cuba negli anni della crisi economica dopo il crollo dell’impero sovietico, Hernández inizia a documentare la situazione cubana in relazione all’Europa orientale, mostrando la peculiarità del suo tessuto sociale di fronte alla crescente globalizzazione. Gli oggetti utilizzati dall’artista sono spesso objets trouvés della quotidianità, funzionali o decorativi, assemblati e caricati di una valenza analitica o ironica. In mostra, accanto alle prime opere, saranno presenti alcuni lavori recenti e opere site specific realizzate appositamente per la mostra al Mart.
The Mart continues to look towards the various languages of contemporary art with this monographic exhibition dedicated to Diango Hernández. Born in Cuba in 1970, Hernández today lives and works in Düsseldorf: using various media, from installations to drawing, sculpture to painting and video, he draws into his work a personal depiction of everyday life, showing the link with the socio-political sphere and with art. Having grown up in Cuba in the years of economic crisis in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet empire, Hernández began to document the situation in Cuba in relation to Eastern Europe, showing the unique aspects of its social fabric faced with growing globalisation. The objects used by the artist are often everyday, functional or decorative objets trouvés, assembled or charged with an analytical or ironic value. The exhibition will present some of his early works, together with more recent and site-specific ones made specially for the Mart exhibition.

Da diversi anni il Mart guarda alla fotografia come una delle discipline artistiche fondamentali su cui riflettere, non solo per il suo valore documentario ma anche e soprattutto per il suo valore artistico. Carlo Valsecchi (Brescia 1965, vive e lavora a Milano) si può considerare a tutti gli effetti, e lo testimoniano i suoi numerosi e importanti progetti sia in Italia che all’estero, una delle figure emergenti più interessanti che appartengono al genere della fotografia artistica. In passato Valsecchi si è sempre occupato di rappresentare dettagli urbani. In questo suo nuovo progetto le fotografie, come sempre di grande formato e prive di ogni presenza umana, si focalizzano sugli elementi naturali, a metà tra la visione documentaristica e l’estetica dell’astrazione. I tagli prospettici e la luce ottenuta tramite calibrati tempi di esposizione operati dall’artista, destabilizzano la percezione ed incoraggiano al dialogo attivo con l’immagine. Il risultato è una fotografia di spiccata potenza emotiva, con una cifra stilistica assolutamente personale.
For a number of years, the Mart has regarded photography as a fundamental artistic discipline worthy of closer study, not only for its documentary value but also and above all for its artistic value. Carlo Valsecchi (Brescia 1965, now resident in Milan) is one of the most interesting emerging figures in the photography as art genre, as evidenced by his many important projects in Italy and abroad. In the past, Valsecchi has always focused on depicting urban details. In this new project, in a large format as always and without any human presence, he looks at natural elements, seen in part as documentary vision and in part with the aesthetic of abstraction. The perspective views and light obtained via carefully calibrated exposure times by the artist, destabilise one’s perception and encourage an active dialogue with the image. The result is a photograph of great emotive power, with an absolutely personal stylistic key.

Artista, poetessa e performer di calibro internazionale, Mirella Bentivoglio si occupa di poesia visiva a partire dagli anni Sessanta. Non è stata solo autrice di opere sperimentali nel campo della ricerca verbovisuale, ma ha anche curato importanti esposizioni in Italia e all’estero, come la mostra dedicata alle artiste donne alla Biennale di Venezia del 1978. Già presente come artista nelle collezioni del Mart, grazie alla donazione di molte opere provenienti dall’Archivio Internazionale al Femminile, da lei fondato, Mirella Bentivoglio lega oggi il suo nome al Museo anche come raffinata e preziosa collezionista. Le opere del suo lascito offrono un panorama completo dell’arte verbovisiva femminile, sia italiana che internazionale, dagli anni Sessanta ai nostri giorni. Da ricordare tra le artiste italiane presenti, le opere di Irma Blank, Betty Danon, Anna Esposito, Maria Lai, Ketty La Rocca e Lucia Marcucci.
Artist, poet and performer of an international standing, Mirella Bentivoglio has studied visual poetry since the 1960s. Not only has she been the creator of experimental works in the field of verbo-visual research, but has also curated major exhibitions in Italy and abroad, as the exhibition dedicated to women artists at the Venice Biennale of 1978 testifies. Already present as artist in the Mart’s collections, thanks to the donation of many works from the Archivio Internazionale al Femminile, which she founded, Mirella Bentivoglio now links her name to the museum as a refined, valued collector. The works of her endowment offer a complete panorama of women’s verbo-visual art in Italy and abroad between the 1960s and the present day. Among the Italian artists present, it is worth noting works by Irma Blank, Betty Danon, Anna Esposito, Maria Lai, Ketty La Rocca and Lucia Marcucci.

Critico d’arte, pittore, scultore, professore di estetica, Gillo Dorfles è una tra le più importanti figure di artista e di intellettuale nel panorama italiano dal dopoguerra fino a oggi. La mostra vuole rendere omaggio all’artista triestino, classe 1910, e presentare al pubblico la sua vasta produzione pittorica. Il percorso espositivo tocca i momenti salienti della sua ricerca, che ha inizio negli anni Trenta, nel solco dell’espressionismo e del surrealismo. Nel 1948 Dorfles fonda con Soldati, Munari e Monnet il Movimento per l’Arte Concreta (MAC), per un arte pura e astratta, dove convivono esiti rigorosamente geometrici con tendenze più organiche. L’astrazione di Dorfles è il risultato di una forza creativa che egli sviluppa nella pittura, nella scultura come nell’arte applicata, una forza creativa che mai si esaurisce, testimoniata in mostra dalle opere degli anni Ottanta e Novanta e dalle creazioni più recenti.

Art critic, painter, sculptor, professor of aesthetics, Gillo Dorfles is one of the most important figures as artist and intellectual in Italy since the 1940s. The exhibition pays tribute to the Trieste-born artist, born in 1910, and presents his vast production as painter to the public. The exhibition touches on the salient aspects of his work, which began in the 1930s in the wake of Expressionism and Surrealism. In 1948, Dorfles founded the Movimento per l’Arte Concreta (MAC - Movement for Concrete Art) with Soldati, Munari and Monnet, aiming for a pure and abstract art, which could combine strictly geometric results with more organic ones. Dorfles’ abstraction is the result of a creative force that he developed in painting, in sculpture and in applied arts, a creative force that never dried, as shown in the exhibition through works of the 1980s and 1990s, and more recent creations. 32

LOOK riunisce i diversi allestimenti espostivi per il 2011 delle collezioni del Mart. Voci del futurismo. Trent’anni d’avanguardia presenta un percorso attraverso le diverse personalità e anime del futurismo. Da Fortunato Depero a Umberto Boccioni, da Gino Severini a Enrico Prampolini, da Luigi Russolo a Tullio Crali a Thayaht. Esposte alcune recenti acquisizioni tra cui quattro straordinari arazzi del 1929 di Giacomo Balla. ’800 versus ’900 propone artisti come Francesco Hayez, Eugenio Prati, Luigi Bonazza in un nuovo ed esaltante confronto con le ricerche contemporanee. Accostamenti tematici che definiscono innovative relazioni come quello tra un ritratto dinastico di Franz von Lenbach (1894) e la figura evocatrice della principessa Sissi di Anselm Kiefer del 1991 o il ritratto corale di Eugenio Prati avvicinato a un’opera di Marina Abramović. Look Today. Gli ultimi sessant’anni mostra una serie di confronti tra pittura e scultura. E’ l’occasione per rivedere alcuni capolavori della stagione astratta e informale, con opere di Fontana, Burri, Manzoni e Vedova, accostati con la scultura di Marino Marini e Alberto Giacometti. L’ultima sala propone un incontro inedito tra le sculture di Fausto Melotti e le opere su carta di Wassilij Kandinskij, entrate di recente nelle collezioni del Mart.
LOOK brings together the various exhibition layouts for 2011 of the Mart’s collections. Voices of Futurism. Thirty years of avant-garde art presents an itinerary through the various personalities and voices of Futurism. From Fortunato Depero and Umberto Boccioni to Gino Severini and Enrico Prampolini, and from Luigi Russolo and Tullio Crali to Thayaht. On show are some recent acquisitions, including four extraordinary tapestries dating from 1929 by Giacomo Balla. 19th century versus 20th century presents artists like Francesco Hayez, Eugenio Prati and Luigi Bonazza in a new, exciting comparison with contemporary work. Thematic pairings defining innovative relations like that between a dynastic portrait by Franz von Lenbach (1894) and the evocative figure of Princess Sissy by Anselm Kiefer of 1991, or the group portrait by Eugenio Prati alongside a work by Marina Abramović. Look Today. The last 60 years have revealed a series of comparisons between painting and sculpture. This presents an opportunity to review some masterpieces of the abstract and informal period, with works by Fontana, Burri, Manzoni and Vedova alongside the sculpture of Marino Marini and Alberto Giacometti. The last room offers an unusual comparison between the sculptures of Fausto Melotti and the works on paper of Wassilij Kandinskij, which have recently entered the collections of the Mart.

L’appuntamento con la giornata dedicata in tutta Italia all’arte contemporanea, promossa dai 26 Musei dell’Amaci (Associazione Musei d’Arte Contemporanea Italiani) e sostenuta dal Ministero per i Beni Culturali, avrà come testimonial nel 2011 l’artista italiano Giulio Paolini. Come nelle passate edizioni, nel 2011 presso il Mart si potrà usufruire non solo dell’ingresso gratuito ma anche di una serie di eventi organizzati per far riflettere i giovani, e più in generale il pubblico del Museo, sul valore e il significato nella società attuale dell’arte contemporanea.
The appointment with the day dedicated throughout Italy to contemporary art, promoted by the 26 Museums that are members of Amaci (Associazione Musei d’Arte Contemporanea Italiani), and supported by the Ministry for Cultural Affairs, will have as its testimonial for 2011 the Italian artist, Giulio Paolini. For the occasion, the Mart will not only provide free entry to the museum, but will also organise a series of events to show the value and significance of contemporary art.

Come consuetudine dal 1999, anche nel dicembre del 2011 le Gallerie d’arte del Trentino presenteranno negli spazi del mezzanino una selezione dei loro migliori artisti. Per una più coerente relazione tra museo e Gallerie, il tema sarà individuato di comune accordo ispirandosi alle mostre in corso durante la manifestazione Auguri ad Arte. L’iniziativa è l’occasione di un dialogo molto stretto e produttivo con gli operatori locali, che permette di dare visibilità al sistema dell’arte trentino, in fase di continua crescita e qualificazione.
As is customary, in December of 2011 the art galleries of the Trentino will again be presenting a selection in the spaces of the Mart of the best artists proposed during the course of the year. In order to establish a more coherent relationship between museum and galleries, the theme is set by common agreement, drawing inspiration from the exhibitions under way during the event. The initiative provides an opportunity to continue the close dialogue launched some time ago between the Mart and the local galleries to provide greater visibility for the art world of the Trentino.

La Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero accoglie le opere di Roberto Marcello Iras Baldessari; i suoi incontri con il gruppo fiorentino e i suoi vagabondaggi attraverso l’Europa, frequentando Schwitters e Archipenko, ne fanno un innovatore d’alto calibro. Nato a Innsbruck nel 1894, ma roveretano di formazione, nel 1915 Baldessari si trasferisce a Firenze, dove frequenta il Caffè Giubbe Rosse, entrando in contatto con i futuristi e stringendo importanti amicizie con Notte, Lega, Conti, Campana e Rosai. Baldessari definisce un proprio stile accostandosi a Umberto Boccioni ma anche alla figurazione, in particolare prendendo a modello il lavoro di Ottone Rosai. Scoppiata la Grande Guerra Iras Baldessari ne testimonia la portata tragica con il toccante dipinto Treno dei feriti, del 1918. All’inizio degli anni Venti, l’artista si dedica alla pittura di paesaggio e all’incisione, collocandosi a metà strada tra il futurismo e il ritorno alla tradizione teorizzato dagli artisti del gruppo Novecento. Tra il 1934 ed il 1937, Baldessari torna al primo amore, il futurismo, in occasione del lancio internazionale dell’aeropittura voluto da Marinetti.

The Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero hosts the works of Roberto Marcello Iras Baldessari; his meetings with the Florentine group and his wanderings across Europe, frequenting Schwitters and Archipenko, made a leading innovator of him. Born in Innsbruck in 1894, but trained in Rovereto, in 1915 Baldessari moved to Florence, where he frequented the Café Giubbe Rosse, coming into contact with the futurists and forming important friendships with Notte, Lega, Conti, Campana and Rosai. Baldessari defined a personal style, close to that of Umberto Boccioni but also to figurative art, in particular taking the work of Ottone Rosai as a model. With the outbreak of the Great War, Iras Baldessari, recorded its tragic portent with his moving painting, Treno dei feriti (Train of wounded soldiers), of 1918. In the early 1920s, the artist dedicated himself to landscape painting and prints, positioning himself midway between Futurism and the return to tradition theorised by the artists of the Novecento group. Between 1934 and 1937 Baldessari returned to his first love, Futurism, on the occasion of the international launch of Aeropittura (Aero painting) by Marinetti.

Quando, nel 1984, il gallerista milanese Luciano Inga-Pin, decide di riunire nella sua sede milanese un gruppo di giovani artisti battezzandoli “Nuovi Futuristi”, precisa che tale relazione è soprattutto rivolta all’opera di Giacomo Balla, di Fortunato Depero e al celebre manifesto Ricostruzione futurista dell’universo, del 1915. Al primo nucleo di sette aderenti al nuovo movimento, Gianantonio Abate, Clara Bonfiglio, Innocente, Marco Lodola, Luciano Palmieri, Plumcake, Umberto Postal, in seguito si aggiungono Dario Brevi, Andrea Crosa e Battista Luraschi i quali guardano e potenziano i punti di forza di Balla-Depero soprattutto per ciò che riguarda la pratica di un’arte urbana in connessione con i messaggi pubblicitari, ma anche rivolta alla glorificazione dei propri eroi, dei divi dello sport o della musica leggera e della danza. Contemporaneamente utilizzano nuovi materiali prodotti dalle nuove tecnologie, come il plexiglass, il pvc, il neon, spingendosi al confine tra design e pubblicità, ma anche tra la narrazione dei fumetti e dei cartoni animati. Nelle sale della Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero le opere di questo gruppo di artisti entreranno in dialogo con i loro maestri, creando nuove e sorprendenti relazioni.

When, in 1984, Milanese gallery owner Luciano Inga-Pin, decided to bring together a group of young artists in his gallery and dubbing them the “New Futurists”, he noted that the reference was above all to the work of Giacomo Balla, Fortunato Depero and the celebrated Futurist reconstruction of the universe manifesto of 1915. The initial nucleus of seven members of the new movement, Gianantonio Abate, Clara Bonfiglio, Innocente, Marco Lodola, Luciano Palmieri, Plumcake, Umberto Postal, was later joined by Dario Brevi, Andrea Crosa and Battista Luraschi, who studied and reinforced the points of strength of Balla-Depero, above all as regards the practice of an urban art in connection with advertising messages, but also aimed at the glorification of national or sporting heroes and stars of light music and dance. At the same time, using new materials produced by the latest technology, such as Plexiglas, PVC, neon, and pushing back the borders between design and advertising, but also between comic strips and animated cartoons. In the rooms of the Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero, the works by this group of artists will initiate a dialogue with their teachers, creating new, surprising relations.

Ritorna BabyMart: uno spazio permanente dedicato a bambini e genitori, ospitato all’interno delle gallerie espositive del secondo piano del museo. BabyMart è uno spazio permanente attrezzato, a disposizione di tutti i visitatori del museo, in cui è possibile svolgere attività ludiche ed educative. I più piccoli potranno muoversi in tutta sicurezza nell’angolo morbido e giocare, leggere e disegnare insieme alle loro famiglie. Gli adulti, inoltre, potranno trovarvi altre risorse messe a disposizione dal museo, come il collegamento wi-fi gratuito, la consultazione libera di cataloghi delle mostre in corso, e l’uso di cinque console Nintendo DS caricate con il videogioco educativo “Art Academy”.
In collaboration with the Casse Rurali Trentine, the Mart welcomes families to a new space dedicated specially to them. BabyMart, a permanent space dedicated to small children and their parents, located in the exhibition galleries on the second floor of the museum has returned. And with a new feature: a wi-fi area to make the stay pleasant too for mums, dads and grandparents. BabyMart is a permanent, specially-equipped space open to all visitors to the museum, in which it is possible to enjoy play and educational activities. Children can move safely within the child-safe environment and play, read and draw with their families.
Adults can also find other resources there made available by the museum, including free wi-fi access, free consultation of catalogues to current exhibitions and the use of five Nintendo DS consoles loaded with the educational “Art Academy” video game.
