FORTE 2016 // INTRODUCTION
The goal of consolidating Festival Forte as a global cultural reference was reached after the conclusion of the year 2016. The aesthetic of Forte 2016 involved research of new languages, in order to solidify the intrinsic characteristics of its base values, broadening the horizon of expression through the creation of autonomous digital systems, capable of random visual synthesis: Generative Art.

FORTE 2016 // INTRODUCTION
Support from media and from countless people that move to Montemor-o-Velho during August, allowed to project the event on a world scale.
7
FORTE 2016 // STRATEGY
Festival Forte is committed to development and innovation with new approaches towards specific markets, by structuring new products aimed at enhancing the existing territorial heritage, by consolidating the production of cultural and artistic content and developing new tools and approaches to promote the center of Portugal as a tourist destination. It is meant to have a sustainable vision.

“Tourism of the Center of Portugal reinforces the quality of Forte” Reaching new audiences in national and international markets is a priority of Festival Forte, boosting the relationship between creative and economic development of the region of Montemor-o-Velho. In 2016, international attendees represented 70% of the total, including over 30 different countries. The countries with the highest incidence rates were: France, Spain, Germany, United Kingdom, Austria, the Netherlands and Italy. The internationalization of Festival Forte, in only three editions, is due to the quality of the billing and its location: a castle, which is national heritage.
FORTE 2016 // GLOBALIZATION
On the third edition of Festival Forte, the governmental entity - Tourism of the Center of Portugal - becomes a partner. For Pedro Machado, chairman of the executive committee, “this municipality deserves all the support of the Tourism of the Center of Portugal, because of its geography and aptitude for major events, which is reflected in the greater success of the 2016 edition compared to previous years. All that can get more foreigners to help sell what is ours, in this way exporting without leaving the country, is an added value. Diário de Coimbra - 27/07/2016

“Forte as been successively appointed by specialized media, as one of the best Festivals of the genre.
FORTE 2016 // PROGRAMMATION
Forte promotes art as a means to boost heritage and territory. The Festival has already attracted around 7500 spectators and in 2016, the 3rd edition was marked by the national and international affirmation of the project, for its relevance, quality and excellence. In 2016 the lineup was acclaimed in all relevant international media outlets: Pitchfork placed it among the 30 best festivals in its annual guide of worldwide Festivals. Reviews by Pitchfork represent the state of the art of the music scene. It has about 240,000 readers per day, and more than 1.5 million unique visitors per month, being the online platform with the highest reach in the area of contemporary music. Festival Forte was also featured in the american XLR8R - founded in Seattle in 1993 - that is currently one of the most influential platforms in electronic music. Festival Forte also returned to the podium of Resident Advisor as one of the best 10 August Festivals in the world, also entering the top chart of Trax magazine. It was considered by 6AM as one of the most beautiful places to celebrate a Festival, with great emphasis on the Montemor-o-Velho Castle. Raquel Carrilho, Jornal i, 25/08/2016

Cabaret Voltaire: Techno Guerrilla “In recent years, Richard H. Kirk has dedicated himself to the recovery of lost material from Cabaret Voltaire, releasing archived recordings that are already in the 5th volume. In practice, Kirk has been the only Cabaret Voltaire member since the 90s and recently revived live performances, playing for the first time in Portugal at FESTIVAL FORTE, where Daniel Miller will also perform. DM is another electronic music legend and the boss of Mute Records that puts out releases from artists such as Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, Nitzer Ebb or Nick Cave. From the lineup Of FORTE 2016 there are also prominent names of the techno scene such as Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Michael Mayer and Apparat.

“Computer originated as tool for fast calculations, has evolved into a medium for expression. The innovation of Forte by defining the language in which it is expressed, results in a unique aesthetic. Relying on careful musical selection and visual dynamism underlying every show, Festival Forte is a reflection of the convergence and synergy between all elements. Starting from this idea of convergence and synergy between music, image, public and nature, the focus is on the human ability to see and hear. These two skills, allow the translation of stimuli from the outside world under the form of a personal, unique experience.
FORTE 2016 // CONCEPT
The convergence of these two fields has been subject of debate and research: two areas that are born apart are now virtually inseparable. This is where the experimental and dynamic relationship between sound and image is generated in a rare and abundant creative dialogue, which defines new trends in digital communication. Casey Reas, Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists

FORTE // GENERATIVE ART FORTE2016 2016
Generative art refers to any artistic practice that is governed by the use of a system which obeys a set of language rules. These languages are associated to programming and algorithmic logic that have a non- linear visual response. The systems are autonomous and fertile grounds for exploring the multiplicity of algorithmic beauty. 18
FORTE2016 2016 FORTE // GENERATIVE ART
The dimensional constraints of the four elements of nature – earth, wind, fire and water, are the basis of this new language. These four elements provide different sensorial experiences and are bounded by two temporal extremes: night and day, present in the light/shadow dichotomy of Forte’s communication. Without compromising the visual code of the festival, the semantics are renewed for experimental methods of communication. 19
FORTE 2016 // LANGUAGE
The connection between this language and the festival’s identity is based on the conceptualization of generative art, on an algorithmic transformation into visual code. The dialogue between physical and virtual spaces leads to visual mutations that follow a consistent identification of pictorial elements.

FORTE 2016 // INTERACTION BETWEEN SPACE AND PUBLIC
A good realization of this identity leads to the deconstruction of the message and the means by which it is transmitted. The specific code underlying electronic music and the physical space where it will be presented, generate a unique place to hear and contemplate in a pure environment. The castle of Montemor-o-Velho, classified as National Heritage, has a significant symbolic value on spatial and cultural memory. Festival Forte stimulates emotional experimentation. A personal highlight was developing work for the Santa Maria de Alcรกรงova church. Every evening the crowds would drift towards the green light emanating from the church enclave, inside a pixel perfect mapped structure, visible from the gates a slow, undulating, generative video synthesis, reminiscent of early video engineer Nam June Paik, illuminating the arched screen towering four metres above and suspended two feet from the floor between slender spiral pillars. FORTE 2016 // Š JAYGO BLOOM INSTALATTION - GENERATIVE GARDEN
A short walk away in the castle courtyard, I took to the task of mapping twenty large, square paving stones and illuminating these through a random generative sequence, made possible through code and the abstract and complex universe of Fragment Shaders*, mapped by an overhead strobe rigged to a metal frame. As happens so often when making for public interaction, the work soon realised itself as a generative, interactive dance floor; a reworking of those initial coded experiments by John Conway back in the 1960s, the subject of Artificial Life. A-Life for millennial’s, after hours entertainment fuelled by a raw sense of fun and acute acid contortions. One 20-something guy in a red t-shirt tested a paving stone with one foot, as if checking for boobytraps, while others danced from stone to stone in an attempt to keep up with the lights. Situated in the castle gardens with a panorama across the entire Montemor-O-Velho valley, I erected a towering four metre cubed, L- shaped, white monolith, mapped structure. Throughout the night this became a haven for phased out folk, surrounded at times by a few dozen revellers, exploring its minimal form as a place to rest, absorbed within the rich, analogue video synthesis projected on its shape from all sides, punctuating the horizon line from dusk till dawn with a digital, other-worldliness.

FORTE 2016 // ACCOMODATION
Festival Forte reinforced partnerships established in 2014 and 2015.In 2016, it partnered with Hotel groups installed in Figueira da Foz, Montemor-o-Velho and the surroundings. These partnerships resulted in a series of accommodation packages consisting of a general admission, transportation to Montemor-o-Velho, a welcome pack with 1 bag, 1 t- shirt and a guide. These packages were significant in Figueira da Foz, where agreements with five hotel groups were established.
32
FORTE 2016 // TRANSPORT
In order to guarantee greater comfort and ease of access, the Festival offers a discount service with CP Trains and a free bus service connecting Coimbra / Montemor-o-Velho, Alfarelos / Montemor-o-Velho, Figueira da Foz / Montemor-o-Velho. In articulation with the main national bus transport company, Transdev,in 2016, direct connections from Lisbon and Porto airports to the village of Montemor-o-Velho were guaranteed. These measures have resulted in greater visibility at national and international levels and the inclusion of Montemor-o-Velho on the touristic route of tourist destinations in Portugal, such as Coimbra and Figueira da Foz. 33

FORTE 2016 // CAMPING IS LOVE
“It is your home for a few days, but it’s more than that. It’s in the camping where the sentiment of the festival is often formed and it’s this sentiment that you are you going to miss”

FORTE 2016 // CAMPING IS LOVE
The camping site is a place of meeting and socializing especially during the day. It is equipped with camper support and it sits by the bed of the river, located near the center of the village. During the Festival the infrastructure is reinforced and exceptional conditions are created for the comfort and dynamism of its space. In 2016, the camping site was of greater relevance, due to the efforts of the team involved. The music has evolved with the concept of Forte, creating a sort of second festival: a place where the space / people interaction is more comprehensive, in a more plural context, at an artistic, gastronomic and musical level. The Camping team has created a new concept that mirrors involvement and proximity to the public in this way making Forte a Festival with more integration with the locality and even with life, while we are still a part of it: Camping is Love. The camping site is cool and spacious, shaded by the canopy of the trees, there is plenty of space for you to lounge comfortably in, put up your tent and add personality to your camp. The site is host to many intimate chill out areas to socialise in or take time out from and enjoy the festival activities from afar. Jaygo Bloom, Festival Forte Lead AV Developer
