It’s wonderful to have this opportunity to view work representing some of the current practices of Fine Art Course alumni here at the University of Suffolk. As the ethos of this course embraces studio culture rich in collaborative activity and dialogue, it’s quite appropriate to manifest this continued conversation through this thoughtful and dynamic exhibition.

We are immensely proud of our students, both past and present, that make up such a diverse and vibrant creative community. Our course is designed to enable students to develop technical, conceptual, and professional skills in order that they can actively engage in critical contemporary art practise.

We ask our students to question and challenge pre-existing assumptions of their work, of art and of our world overall. As the title of this exhibition Transitions indicates – this is an ongoing and lifelong endeavour.

As a former student of Fine Art at the University of Suffolk (or University Campus Suffolk as it was back then) I knew how much of a journey a creative course is, and that each course culminates in a degree show. It’s a chance to show a wider audience how you have developed as an artist/creative, and is also a ‘grand goodbye’ after 3 years of hard work.

It got me thinking about all those who had studied Fine Art at the time and how they also missed their final show. So, I got in touch with the University of Suffolk, with a view to putting on an exhibition of art to include

the graduation years 2020-22. After discussions with Dr Jane Watt, senior art lecturer, we morphed the idea into what has become a celebration of all Fine Art alumni from 2007 (when the first graduations were at the university) to 2022 (the most recent ones). We felt this would be a much larger opportunity for all involved.

The creativity and energy of our Fine Art students is incredible and never ceases to amaze me. As a tutor here I feel immensely privileged to be able to witness how our students develop their art practice and confidence during their studies with us, as well as be part of the beginning of their creative exploration. Although it may not feel like it at the time, their years with us are just the start. This exhibition offers us all an opportunity to meet some of our alumni again, to celebrate their different journeys since graduation and ultimately revel in a unique exhibition. As alumni of a course that embraces a wide range of practice,

it is no surprise that Transitions hails a diverse range of work, from drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, lens-based work and performance. It showcases work made by artists who have been practising for over a decade alongside others who have recently graduated. The exhibition and works prompt us to remember but also enable us to look to the future and value the role of art in our individual lives, but also in the world in which we live.

MARK AARON ALUMNI MA16

Mark lives in Suffolk and graduated from UOS in 2016 with an MA with distinction in Arts Practice.

He is a diverse artist experimenting a range of mediums, from photography, music and video through to digital and computer enhanced art. His work is purposefully indirect, favouring emotion over form, and acts as an imaginative jumping off point for the viewer to create their own narratives.

Mark runs a commercial arts practice working in television and games and is also an award winning composer for film and documentary.

SARAH BALE ALUMNI BA16

After studying at Chelsea School of Art, Sarah Bale worked as a textile designer, creating surface-pattern designs for clients. She returned to university in 2010 to study Fine Art and graduated with a First Class Honours degree. Since then, she has continued her studies with The Royal Drawing School. Sarah works from her studio in Suffolk. Sarah’s work focuses on the subject of the female. The characters in her paintings are often mysterious, powerful and at the same time fragile. Working in oils, with layers of colours, Sarah uses a painterly language to express the feelings of the women she paints. The viewer is drawn into the story, and by using their own experiences they can interpret the painting with their own narrative, exploring the psychological, physical and emotional context of the characters depicted.

PATRISYA BANOVA ALUMNI BA22

Patrisiya Banova is a contemporary artist based in Central Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. She has dived into the medium of sound using the vibrations of voice recordings in Bulgarian as well as English language to accompany her yarn installations.

Banova’s work draws attention to the viewer’s body and subconscious vital processes such as breathing (Inspiration Expiration, 2022). She is currently exploring the electrical activity and function of brain waves. Her work’s inspiration derives from everyday troubles that tend to fog one’s mind away from the most significant we share, life.

FELICITY BEAUMONT ALUMNI 19

Felicity Beaumont is a painter concerned with how contemporary society relates to the body. Her work discusses notions of gaze, objectification and the idea of the recontextualised image. Since completing her BA (hons) in Fine Art in 2019, Beaumont has exhibited nationally with The Ingram Collection, The Rafiki Gallery, Guggleton GO FIGURE Collective, been shortlisted for the FBA Futures Collection, worked with Battersea Affordable Art Fair, The Auction Collective, DrawFor, The Flying Fruitbowl, and Art For Cure.

After graduating from UCS I worked for the National Trust, creating and delivering art and craft activities for children, and now I work as a graphic designer for a clothing company. Every free moment I have I spend creating my own artwork, and my experiences from my time in Suffolk still very much feed into my art. My style has become more refined now, and I predominantly use watercolour and coloured pencil, whereas before I worked mostly in acrylic. I am inspired by nature and organic forms, letting the paint bleed and merge to create unexpected shapes that I then work in to.

Mark and Michelle are an art duo based in Suffolk, who regularly exhibit in the UK. They have been working in collaboration since 2019 and also curate exhibitions and organise events for their online group of artists from around the world.

They focus their efforts on the act of making rather than specific themes or media, with their work evolving from conversations and experiences.

Jenny’s enjoyment of textiles and stitch was rekindled during her time at university while studying Fine Art.

She takes pleasure in gathering found / recycled materials and fabric and re working them into art with a narrative.

Fulfilment comes from experimenting and manipulating materials. Through her process Jenny strives to find ways to connect her work with her viewer. The narrative is thus an important part of her process. Her current topic ‘Roots’ is a reoccurring theme in her work where she is exploring the impact of Adoption on individuals and families during the 1950s-60s.

My artistic practice explores the use of text and site, examining how the context of a site can change its reading. The work produced is usually temporary, drawing on notions of time and place, duration, and mutability. My practice uses DIY art practices and easily accessible materials such as cardboard and wood.

I am currently completing my Ph.D. at Norwich University of the Arts, researching the identity formation of artist-teachers in adult community learning. This research was motivated by my lived experiences of teaching in this sector.

KIMLEE CHURCHYARD ALUMNI BA22

Kim Churchyard has always loved painting, colour and exploring different techniques. She’s never happier than when working on a large canvas or focusing on the tiniest of details to get her picture just right. In 2012, she followed her dream and signed up for an Art and Design course at Suffolk New College. Two years later, complete with portfolio, she was offered a place on the Fine Art Degree course at the University of Suffolk, graduating three years later with a 2.2.

Kim often listens to music while painting, drawing what she hears and getting inspiration from it. A dedicated artist, she also loves architecture and nature and is excited about what the next few years will bring.

TRICIA COTTRELL ALUMNI BA15

The influences which inspire my art are many and varied; the human condition, life experiences and the emotions they invoke; also the beauty I find within both natural and man-made worlds. I completed my B.A. (hons) Fine Art degree in 2015, and shortly thereafter became part of a local art collective, known as Holywells Creatives. As a group, we have exhibited our work in and around Ipswich. In 2017 I became a volunteer artist for the Supershoes charity, which does amazing work supporting children living with cancer. I’m very proud to be part of their dedicated team. As an artist, I enjoy having different kinds of creative conversations. Primarily a painter, I also draw, sculpt and work with fabric and text. Most recently I have been incorporating text into my paintings and have also made tentative steps into some more abstract pieces.

I’m a figurative painter living and working in Norwich, UK. My paintings combine my love of graffiti art in combination with traditional portrait painting. My work aims to explore the relationship between the old and the new by the application of paint and the abstraction of form.

NIKI DENNIS ALUMNI BA15

I am a painter fascinated by ancient art-forms and primitive cultures. This fascination began whilst studying for my degree in Anthropology. I am interested in the beginnings of expression and language in its pictorial form. My work is an attempt to access my unconscious mind and I create ‘raw’ artworks which express my internal emotions. My art practice links me into that instinctual drive for expression which began with our ancient ancestors. My current work has links to nature and a focus on natural forms. I paint on large canvases, using oil and acrylic paint as well as oil sticks and pastels. I have exhibited at Contemporary British Painting in London; Childwickbury Arts Fair, St Albans; Court Farm Art Exhibition, Brighton and at the Waterfront Gallery Ipswich.

JULIE DODDS ALUMNI BA15

Julie Dodds studied Fine Art at the University of Suffolk and works from her studio in Ipswich, the town where she lives. Julie exhibited in group exhibitions at the respected Ipswich law firm Prettys, at the Atrium Gallery at the University of Suffolk and regularly at the Pond Gallery at the famed art and music venue, Snape Maltings.

She creates powerful and atmospheric wire sculptures and has taught the basic techniques of the medium at the Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Julie’s fascination with history and folklore, with tales of mystery and magic, often linked to specific local places, combine to produce a surreal, otherworldly quality in her work.

I’m a Suffolk-based artist that practices in pen and paint, reimagining what is felt and experienced rather than what is seen, taking inspiration from personal histories both real and imaginary. I love creating work that requires investigation to visually understand, whilst also becoming a new narrative from that of the viewer in the process.

Loleitha’s work is a concept-driven, exploration of racial illustration, a reflection of subjects she is most passionate about including identity, ‘race’ and gender representation along the historical continuum of world events. She studies the body’s form, tones, and well-being, focusing on the human condition, physiognomy, leaning towards questioning the varying perceptions of People of Colour beyond the surface level, most notably the ‘Black British’ and ‘Global’ experience which resonates within her artistic expression.

Her style is figurative and expressionistic, with the intention of producing a series of meaningful artistic images that impact all who interact with her work. So, what shapes our perception and ideology?

John’s artwork deals with aspects of life, both good and bad, humorous and extremely dark.

After graduating from my course, I continued working alongside other artists on campus, with studio space at the Atrium Studios. This was a wonderful environment to get creative and make expressive art; and to develop relationships within the local art scene.

I am still creating with a style I developed while at the Atrium Studios experimenting with texture and mixed media. The painting I have in this exhibition is an example of where my ideas and art are leading me, I look to explore my emotions more closely (as a creative force) to bring that through in my new artworks.

Since my degree, the main preoccupation within my art practice has been to explore the impact of industrial pollutants on ecosystems and the ensuing loss of biodiversity.

Utilizing a wide range of mediums I intentionally create semiabstracts that express environmental degradation, alienation and loss of habitats. I initiated an eco-art collective in 2021, through which we organized and curated interactive art displays in a public space - drawing attention to the COP 26 and 27 climate events.

The direction of my eco-art practice opened up opportunities to exhibit in London,Yorkshire and East Anglian Galleries.

Bobby Forsythe is the founder of the collective Supporting the Arts, established in 2020 in response to the pandemic, and curates annual exhibitions that support both local and international artists.

She graduated from studying Fine Art at the University of Suffolk and holds an MA in Art History and Theory, achieved at the University of Essex .

I am a multidisciplinary artist and printmaker, my work includes photography, drawing, various digital media, and, most importantly, printmaking. I focus mainly on relief forms of printmaking, such as woodcut, wood engraving, and linocut.

An important aspect of my practice is to explore the relationship between traditional printmaking processes and new techniques and technology, such as digital photography. I am interested in how these different approaches can inform and nurture one another, given that the first is the oldest form of mass reproduction while the other is at the cutting edge of current technological development.

Stitching is at the centre of my practice. I enjoy the process of making and constructing. I experiment with non-traditional materials to subvert the traditional perception of stitching and to push the boundaries of what was regarded as merely a domestic skill.

I consider myself to be a mixed media artist, I normally produce large pieces of art measuring over 150cm square preferring to work with acrylic paints, inks with metallic and pearl finishes.

I use embellishments such as gold leaf, glitter and diamantes this adds detail, depth and beauty to my compositions due to them reacting and playing with reflections and refractions using the natural light in the environment. More recent artworks have been focused upon digital collages that are presented as posters or reminiscent of album cover artwork making reference to popular culture from both the past and present day.

Each idea or subject of inspiration often stems from a ‘found object’ or ‘readymade’ component that dictates reaction or inclusion. Through an explorative process, appropriate materials and techniques are identified, occasionally combining various disciplines for a desired outcome.

The current geological age of the Anthropocene is an important consideration in my approach to creativity. Although not always obvious, as its inclusion in the creative process, is more important, than evident in a desired outcome. Predominantly producing threedimensional works, I often use industrial materials, objects and processes, as they best reference the work to the desired context.

My current creative output and Doctorate research focuses on passaging and pilgrimaging through ones space. After purchasing a Bowman 40 yacht I furthered my understanding of the concept to passage and that of water bound journeying. This has developed into the creation of JL Sailing-Engineering-Art, a project that provides skippered passages by myself, with like minded people, providing art residencies at sea. In 2023 I am planning a clockwise voyage around the UK and Ireland starting in April from Levington, Suffolk. The love and affection that many individuals formerly had can be seen in this painting. Prior to air raids, Kurdish life was thriving with joy and enjoyment. The town of Halabja was attacked with chemical weapons by Iraqi jets on March 16, 1988. At least 5000 people died, 7000 were left with severe injuries, some of whom are still receiving medical care. For those who have been able to escape and recuperate physically, the ladder presented in the upper right corner serves as a symbol of hope. This incident had an impact on animals in addition to the grieving people and the suffering many people experienced. Both plants and animals were completely destroyed. In contrast to the destroyed land painted in drab hues, the paintings warm colours symbolizes springtime and nature.

I’m an artist, curator and former gallery owner. I work about ‘life/ death/beginnings/endings’. Time is not time. Endings are journeys. Physical marks & transient moments. In 2012, I began creating my ongoing series of digital glitch paintings. In 2013, after the death of my mother, I created new artworks inspired by the words of psychologist Carl Jung (on life & death). Often comedic, sometimes a little sad. I now use ‘deep machine learning’ when conceiving some of that ‘Days’ series - giving the machine something, then taking it back as mine in the final painting; a modern collaboration.

Melisa Novotna is a recent University of Suffolk BA graduate and a current MA student at the Middlesex University. Novotna works with multi media with her practice focused on painting, photography and film. Themes included in her work focus on the philosophy surrounding the gaze, feminism, male gaze and cinema.

Novotna often aims to make the viewer aware of their position as a spectator being interrupted by being spectated. Alongside of her artistic practice, Novotna expands her paintings into the world of fashion by creating her brand Babyface Company.

ALEXANDER LUKE OSBORNE- BA (Fine Art) From an early age

Alexander has always been artistically creative. After leaving school and following a short time in employment, Alexander enrolled at Suffolk New College where he completed the Art and Design course with a Triple Distinction. Alexander then went on to study for a Fine Art Degree at the University of Suffolk where he excelled which included receiving commissions and exhibiting his work. Sadly, in his final year, Alexander suffered a massive stroke which left him disabled and with no use of his right hand. However, after extensive rehab he was able to sucessfully complete his degree the following year and using his left hand.

Since graduating I have continued to make art using different mediums and drawing on anything that inspires me to create work of subjects that I am drawn to.

Most recently I have produced a series of up-close drawings of animals using pastel pencils that I started using just before lockdown and continue to use as my go to medium.

For the most part, people show the outward appearance of order and civility but underneath that exterior there’s usually something far more interesting happening.’ Adam Riches is an emerging British painter and draughtsman who primarily works in monochromatic color palette. The characteristically stylized portraits and figurative works he creates are based on a sensitive response to the human condition, ranging from furious expressive moments to poignant, melancholy reflections. Using both pen on paper and oil on canvas, Riches’ explores the human psyche and delves into the effects of current social and political issues upon individuals, as well as their behaviour to one another. The artist is especially interested in people’s frailties and their fallibility - in particular, their potential for extreme behaviour.

Sage graduated in 2012 with BA Hons, First Class, Fine Art; works include performance/video and collage. Weaving through the mysterious tales of heartache, lust, love, loss, and the delusional states of the mind. Stories of events and faces unravel in each collage where Sage seeks to infuse humorous qualities. Sage has exhibited and performed in the UK; as well as internationally. Including: International Multimedia Music Festival Lithuania, a National Platform Artist for Spill Festival of performance 2012 Ipswich, Artist in residence at Caroline Wiseman’s South Beach Lookout Aldeburgh, Edmund Harcourt’s Whitley Art Festival Reading and Norwich Arts Centre. SOPHIE Sophia ALUMNI 07

SOPHIE Sophia is a self-graduated Mistress of Art, her work centres around the value of her SELF. SOPHIE’s conceptual and performance art explores the taboos of selfishness, hearing voices, declaring oneself as GOD, pricing one’s own artwork outrageously, psychosis as a spiritual awakening and SELF Love.

SOPHIE declares her name an artwork, highlighting when a woman signs her art it devalues it; ‘My name is wise, therefore valuable.’ In 2022 SOPHIE opened her solo show SELF(ish), with a controversial performance titled, ‘Come as yourSELF’, a live therapy session with psychotherapist she had never worked with. SOPHIE Sophia has assisted Artist Polly Morgan on Morgan’s first public sculpture.

After finishing her degree Loisjoy has concentrated on drawing and etching. She likes the richness and versatility of charcoal and since graduating has followed various Life Drawing Classes. She often depicts people in her work and enjoys a sense of narrative .

She now draws considerably from imagination with the aim of expressing both memory and emotion. Loisjoy likes the monochrome of charcoal with the addition of small amounts of watercolour.

Elgin Thwaites (they/she) is a Sunderland-based artist, currently pursuing an MSc in Psychology after completing a BA (Hons) in Fine Arts in 2021. Thwaites believes in creating authentic, unbiased, and spontaneous artwork propelled by experiencing that ‘magic spark.’ Thwaites’ practice is rooted in the importance of chance and those seemingly discardable paint rags or unintentional side quests. Their inspiration is heterogeneous, whether it be the heat plumes of a toaster, an article on mustelids, or the feel of a smooth rock.Thwaites is committed to working within the community to promote art accessibility and is passionate about establishing an environment that encourages playful silliness, enabling a ‘free room’ to embrace the true self and promote recovery.

Since graduating in 2020, Arimathea has continued to develop her artistic and curatorial practices. In 2020, she co-curated the group exhibition ‘Barkada’ at the 142 Gallery in Felixstowe, and was also part on the online exhibitions ‘The Discerning Eye’ and ‘Ipswich Art Fair’. In 2021 she was featured in The Holy Art’s online exhibition, ‘Oblivion’.

From 2021 to 2022, she undertook her Master’s degree in Curation at Norwich University of The Arts, where she co-curated projects such as Mythos Zine, a Norwich-based ghost and folklore zine with accompanying audio and transcript and the Mythos Guided Tour, an artist led guided tour of the locations featured within the zine.

My painting style is focused mostly on the materiality of paint, creating various textures and capturing the spontaneity of my medium. My main source of inspiration comes from both the beauty and power of Nature. I try my best to capture this using a combination of drips, marks and colour.

My art is an ambidextrous collaboration with myself, I draw with both hands and paint with my left. I have always been fascinated by people, and have spent my life observing and drawing people in social/public settings discreetly. When the first lockdown happened, people watching became impossible, so I started looking more closely at local architecture. I am intrigued by that which is contained within the walls of buildings. I consider some of my work to be reimagined and illustrative; looking beyond what exists in the present moment. I choose to work in whatever feels intuitive, which is usually continuous line drawing and watercolour. I also create reimagined architectural dioramas with the intention of using them in stop motion animation.

As a young girl I had a childhood full of abuse, violence and bullying. The times I only ever truly felt good, accepted and wanted were celebration times like birthdays, Christmases and other special occasions….everyone looking good wearing good clothes and makeup, the presents and party food and drink people having fun.
