ALDEBURGH CALLING

From this fieldwork, I then began to reflect upon the knowledge I had absorbed from nature, my original inspiration. I come to realise the importance of mathematics & physics: the complex systems at a molecular level which underpin the simple elements of the natural world. Through a process of evolving thought, natural sciences have also come to inspire the forms of artistic expression I choose to explore. It has also been personally rewarding to understand the ideas of historical figures. Whose minds & belief propelled mankind forward: Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Einstein, Darwin, Hawking, Attenborough & Dawkins. Their theories taken as fact have become integral to the way we understand objects & see the space around us. Looking toward evolution, molecular structure, the atom, proton, electron & the elements of the periodic table to further inspire my thoughts. I started to realise that we are not that different from the objects we surround ourselves with. A notion that blurs the distinction between organic & inorganic objects. With this selection of images (which I like to think of as paintings) I hope to open up the environment to scrutiny: real things that we normally see & feel without consciousness. It sounds simple, just observing the world around us. But so closely that we can see the gamut of living things that exist amongst the cracks in the landscape’s fabric. The closer you look at what surrounds us. The more you tend to see. In the end I hope to show how inter-dependent living things really are. Can you see what eye see?

Opposite is a diagram inspired by molecular structure, which visually describes the thought process involved in my scrutiny of the landscapes I document. ‘USB’ is the abbreviation for UNSEENBEAUTY that is shown as the nucleus, the central ideas that underpin my own theology (found through a combination of interests; art history, natural science, physics, geometry & music). The next layer depicts the three component parts that I feel are integral to the facility of artistic expression, colour, texture & composition. The next layer has the three art styles that I align my creativity to, the rules set by Abstraction, Minimalism & Intimatism. From this come the three mediums in which I explore the world around us: photography, painting & printmaking. The work I produce is borne out of the process I set myself. All of these environments visited define who I am & who I will become. Calling me back to further explore my personal taste.

My personal journey has taken many turns, it is only natural that you should want to do the same. I invite you to discover the UNSEENBEAUTY in our natural landscape. Who would have thought that all these wonderous things could coexist in harmony within a few pages of a book, the beauty of decay, combined with the inherant beauty of nature. Not only do they exist, they communicate beyond words, exploding into your frame with delicacy & a vibrant intensity. Emotional strings beset so often & bestowed upon our great modern painters. The importance of colour, texture & composition are still integral to the formulation of these harmonies. As an artist instead of filtering my experience of nature through the medium of a painting, My aim is to show the startling beauty of nature, in a way that reflects the traditional values of modern master painters like Ben Nicholson, Cy Twombly, Howard Hodgkin, Mark Rothko & others but in a photographic form. See your world from a different perspective & appreciate the significance of art in the everyday landscape that we all inhabit.
