Passage of decay and human detritus as generative sources for spatial and ecological emergence, evolving the urban biotope into an ecological succession composed of informal armatures creating analogous urban habitats for the marginalized species pushed out of the city from the rapid urbanization in the last 50 years. These assemblages of species, infrastructures, and material, both natural and artificial, create infiltrating cocoons, burrowing into the building, nibbling away at the concrete skeleton, shitting out re-assembled extrusions, creating armatures composed of infrastructure and analogous habitats for urban species, both animal and humans alike.

The trash always comes back around in these parts, the cracked limbs come back soft but wounded, it’s the slingshot force that pulls them back to shape. Its when the least expected rush of light comes, the violent thrust exfoliates the extremities. What is left is the passing of the most romantic acts: the kiss, the burn, yet a soft nestling between the masses, that is only noticed from their difference. Their differences dancing on the eve of lust, making love bring the new to the surface, the new escapes the old get rolled forward, everything leaves the deep cave…the host. The return is only the moment that never gets noticed. (Jackie)
The host is left abandoned. Alone. Unfertile. The signs of life left marked on the walls. The inner surface of the host scared with imprints of the past. The markings of aggression, of struggle, of passion, flung without regard about the space. The host consumes the moment. A guilty pleasure knowing without its presence the act would not occur. Eating up the dependency, proud of it’s own dominance. Dejected, the host yearns for the trash. -------pause------(Jackie)
Overwhelmed with the wash of soft waves, the trash resigns itself to the undertow of the blanketing liquid. Slowly disintegrating it’s soul, the trash takes its last breath before the white light of liquid whisks its DNA together with an unidentified entity. Scene 2. Act 1.
Yawning, the new soup opens its newborn eyes. It looks to its left and right, a sea of sameness expands to a seemingly eternity. A creeping claustrophobia and filth begins to set in, shattering the initial thrill of anarchistic freedom contained within the soup of eternity. Strategic alliances commence, the sharing of resources and protection in exchange from the promise of the new frontier, the frontier reaching for the light, for the sky, the purity, the endless expansiveness that lies above. Congregated communities begin to build, leaning on eachother in the shared agenda to climb higher. Reaching and reaching, growing and growing, a competitive race plummets upwards. Distrust and paranoia begins to infiltrate, the over eager, the risk taker, the driven, tear themselves apart from their comrades, slithering up, one by one. The anxious driver in the traffic, weaving back and forth, slowly making its way forward. (Walaid)
Pitch black not a person in sight, sweat drips the younglings climbing up the internal intestines that bring them home, a straight shot tubular space that shows Bangkok’s filth sucked up vertical. The smell of shit, grease and cum surround the younglings’ climb to the nest, a space for many, a place for entertainment, and joy, a place to take out the trash and bring the street life up and defecates their waste.

Glue is extruded down into water container, the glue begins to “dry” by transforming from a viscous to a soild ‘bubble’ traping air inside individual units. The units repel the pressure at the bottom and climb their way up vertically, they congregate and form towers gradually extruding upwards. By the insertion of metal and plastic after the phase of bubbling, the bubble extrusions attract to their suface, clinging to the inserted armatures. THE EPHEMERAL PARADOX

Bangkok Thailand, a growing south Asian city in global exports and industrialization has been subject to vast increases of population, resulting from rapid rural-to-urban migration. Rapid urbanization, one of the phenomena’s of globalization from the last 50 years has among many patterns, shown the importance of infrastructure within the informal growth of settlements within cities. Settlement, typically spreading from edges of infrastructure acting as armatures to the city for access to jobs and services society cannot provide for themselves. Infrastructure, the cities systems of basic utilities such as water, sewage, transportation, electricity, etc, are essential lifelines to society, whether formal or informal. Exhibited in almost all historic cities, the source of water has played a key role in development, an infrastructural keystone to trade, potable use, waste, circulation, etc. The water systems, especially exhibited in Bangkok along its canals and central river Chao Phraya have become the spine and scaffold of development spreading outwards throughout the land.

Habitat loss, one of the main aftereffects of deforestation due to urbanization has created a slew of ‘situations’ within our ‘urban’ fabric. Popularly believed as a binary dualism, forest versus city, in actuality, our cities are just another type of biotope interconnected within the overlapping loops of global ecology. Ecologies, a composite culturally construed term composed of acting agents with various agendas, interconnected processes, and abiotic ‘infrastructures’ supporting the cycles within. The urban biotope isn’t much different than the paradisiacal ‘wilderness’ we perceive of the nature ‘out there’. Aside from the human species with our own complex agendas and subsequent man-made artifacts, the species that had once dominated the land that has been claimed and converted to ‘urban’ do not see the black and white binary of the constructed two land-types. ‘Wild’ species instead adapt to the urban landscape, finding and creating analogous habitats. Our urban biotopes, specifically, the developing overcrowded cities, become subject to pathogens carried between species as a natural disturbance in the succession of recalibration within the global cycle we all are a part of. 016 ARCH 701 • FALL 2014

flea bites a rodent and ingests its blood, afterwards, the parasites migrate and reproduce in the epithelial cells of the flea's stomach before migrating into the lumen of the stomach and finally into the insect's rectum.
DEFINITVE HOST
rodent ingests flea or flea feces. the parasite begins reproducing epimastigotes in the blood capillaries of the rat. trypanosomes appear in the peripheral blood of the rat, which looks like thick worms.
HUMAN HOST
infected rodent bites human. the parasite begins the same process of that found in the rats, eventually causing the ‘sleepy sickness’ which disrupts the sleeping cycle of the human and can eventually lead to death if untreated.

The Museum of Ecology, located at the historic Pier 17 on NYC’s East River, exemplifies the essence of ecological systems in a dialogue between organisms, their environments, and the abiotic elements that shape all living things. The 4 elements braid together in a system of interlocking circulation loops that cultivate the historic ecologies native to the site in the resultant interstitial spaces through a progression of exterior and interior. Connecting to the larger urban ecologic cycle, the museum participates in filtering and harnessing energy flows and forces. Designed to deteriorate over time, the cultivated ecologies will propagate along the east river shore, restoring the riverfront to a healthier dynamic interface with Manhattan.

By treating the 4 abiotic elements as vectors whose relationship creates the interstitial spaces that house the native ecologies, the organization of the form of the Museum of Ecology invites the visitors to better understand the complex relationships between the abiotic elements and the natural ecologies within the site. The Plexus Spine of North Philly
transforming the NEC into an ecological corridor that grows with the community and city forces The Philadelphia Studio: The North East Corridor LARP 601 • PennDesign Fall 2013 • critic_Lucinda Sanders AWARDED IN ANALYSIS + PLANNING ASLA 2014
Reinstating the role of the NEC as a plexus spine both physically and socially, the rail infrastructure that slices through these north Philadelphia neighborhoods can be catalyzed using the atypical fabric from the rail line scars and perpetual vacancy from the loss of industry. Connecting disparate urban patches and corridors through the impervious collage of North Philadelphia, a large-scale bio-diverse civic landscape infrastructure stitches the neighborhoods together, weaving into the fabric and connecting river to river. By creating a flexible framework to adjust to unforeseen city forces, the habitat trail will act as the economic/development driver growing with the community throughout multi-scalar interventions along the armature.

Anchored by the upcoming Nashville Sounds Ballpark, the Basins at Sulphur Dell leverages the neighborhoods central location and distinct history to create a resilient community that enables healthy lifestyles. Diagonal axes cut through the existing fabric adding another arm to the Music City Greenway, creating community connections and direct access to the riverfront. The Basins’ expanded greenway system protects the neighborhood through a series of strategically placed water-collecting plazas. These plazas occupy the lowest points of the site and are designed to create spurs of activity off the greenway.

Retreating from the coast is not necessary or desirable; coastal lowlands can be re-shaped to create dynamic water interfaces, integrating development, transportation, ecology, and culture into a topographically enhanced coastal mouth threading inland into the existing fabric. Using Midland Beach of Staten Island as a case study, the degraded creek bed that had been cut off from the coast is ripped open, inviting the sea into a new robust network connecting new and old settlement through a matrix of landscape, protecting against surge and shedding water. Nestled within a forested hillside on the southern side of the Monongahela River in Pittsburg, the Winter Wünderland exploits the annual snow fall of the region creating a winter sports and recreation playscape as a neighborhood park. By strategic terrrain modeling, the programs are carved into the hilly site held by central water retention basins acting as the ice rink centerpiece of the park throughout the winter months.

Industrial cities characteristically exhibit infrastructural networks along rivers. Although traveling adjacent to eachother through the fabric, systems are separate with no interaction. The River and The Rail proposes a deliberate juxtaposition, celebrating the 2 systems while creating new symbiotic infrastructure remediating each system’s weaknesses through a progression of splicing, reactions, and armistice.

Acknowledging the city of Philadelphia’s drastically overflowing combined sewer outfalls into the Delaware River, my project attempts to alleviate the issue by revitalizing the city’s water system to create a new urban realm in which buildings and sites become 1 entity with water acting as the mediating agent resulting in a new symbiotic architecture that is tightly woven into the urban fabric remediating the city’s blasé attitude by the soft transitions from exterior into interior.

The Arts Pavilion acts as a gateway transition between the 2 contrasting site conditions: Wild Natural Landscape + Urban Hardscape. Transitions become distorted according to adjacent conditions through the progression of the building. Through distortion, the user’s perception becomes heightened, leaving the user in the programmatic action space in state of “awareness” to further concentrate on the given task of the space.

The BSA Design Center, situated along the Fort Point Channel in South Boston, connects to the larger urban water dialogue. The building participates in collecting, filtering and releasing rain water back to the Channel, while harnessing the water for evaporative cooling within the building atrium and along the celebrated drip edge at the perimeter of the site courtyard. Combining both passive and active strategies, the building utilizes a parking garage structure to circulate the airflow through double T beams embedded with hydronic tubing, thus maximizing the thermal capacity of the surface area. The air is then sucked up through the atrium along the thick rammed earth wall contributing to the stack effect through it’s inherent thermal activity.

Urban Detritivore_A Renegotiation Between Growth and Decay an emergent architectural scaffold generated from structured decay at the philadelphia navy yard

Can we develop a method by which the growth of new urban tissue is structured through the decay of the old, to both animate and evolve the urban corpse? Currently, the decay of our human artifacts, this urban entropy, typically gets type cast as signs of degradation (both land and society), blight, or nostalgia. But in fact, it is the natural ecology of urbanity. A latent potential lies embedded within the process of urban entropy. Instead of vilifying and eradicating this aspect, I propose to use these processes as generative sources of urban growth, choreographing the deterioration, prompting an evolution of the architecture instead of an end or a beginning. Working in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, on a silver of land, excluded from the Re-development masterplan, the project poses a new park gateway to Philadelphia, connecting the Navy Yard, Delaware River, and FDR Park.
Urban Detritivore_A Renegotiation Between Growth and Decay The Navy Yard, originally an island, operated under the Navy for 128 years until 1996 when the site was bought and sold to PIDC in 2000 with the agenda of commercial re-development. The Masterplan aims for rehabilitation and re-development of the existing buildings, the urban fabric, and the addition of new architecture to compliment and animate the old. Aligning with the current paradigms of adaption and post-industrial re-hab projects, the masterplan is conventional in its techniques for re-development with its use of operational extensions and subtractions. My project takes on this conventional understanding of Adaptive Reuse by critiquing how the current paradigms are typically understood in the context of rehabilitation projects, which transform the building through physical operations. For example, at one end of the spectrum, e.g. Duisburg Nord, we can suture in new architecture and re-assemble existing fragments, while at the other we can detonate the whole site, like Pruitt–Igoe, starting fresh with a terra nova and a brand new building obliterating any trace of its history. The concept of adaptation will be explored by unpacking the ways in which the term is understood in living systems, specifically in regards to emergence and ideas of succession. The project grew out of an interest in erasure, particularly in the intersection between building life cycle and ecological succession, with embedded concepts of entropy, growth and decay, disturbance and evolution. These ideas have a long history in the subject of ruins, which greatly influenced my choice of site, specifically, the paradoxical motives of both preserving a heritage and the desire to fulfill new cultural demands. Unlike, ancient ruins prized for their heritage and there graceful decay, our modern ruins are left marginalized, not yet awarded ruin “value” for their unfavorable material deterioration and disturbing reminder of an obsolescence come too soon. Typically falling into urban blight, where the decay of the structure is a passive result from neglect, or calling to notations of nostalgia concocted from the ideals of romantic picturesque. My question is: Can we develop a method by which the growth of new urban tissue is structured through the decay of the old, to both animate and evolve the urban corpse? We reserve the right to fail, but fail gloriously. We don’t need to assume or pretend we can easily answer this question. This exploration is not a ‘project’ per say, in the sense that it produces a final product, an idealized state of ‘completion’, on the contrary this thesis is an experiment of method. The hypothesis, influenced by a hyper-contextualization, is aimed at producing a growth model, an organizational logic that operates by way of processes extracted from the research of extant entropy on the site. The value of this proposal lies in the translation of such dynamic processes into a ‘reality’ of urbanism. Flirting on the line between the art-of architecture and the dirty grit of pragmatism. The methodology is inspired by the notions of emergence and ecological succession, whereby incremental changes occur from disturbances such as development pressures, environmental shifts, and human interaction. An ecology of dynamic urban processes, by which natural systems, both living and non-living (abiotic and anthropogenic), produce organized arrangements of material in space and time. A forensic mapping of extant site conditions in conjunction with an analysis of intense entropy on the site will provide the variables to both fuel and disrupt the growth model as well as the starting points to intervene. The proposition is to create a scaffold, to both appendage the failing structures, creating pockets of space for development to colonize within, as well as an armature for the material deterioration of the shell and structure to be catalyzed producing emergent urban ecologies. 112 MARCH/MLA THESIS • 2014 - 2015

Biological growth such as lichens and moss can be seen in the damp zones, accelerated by the lack of sunlight due to it’s interior location. Ceiling tiles at leaking spot saturate beyond holding capacity, and eventually fall.
