ACCOMODATION With 37 carefully designed apartments to suit families, accommodation range from studio to 2-bedroom apartments. Each apartment has a kitchen complete with a stove, dishwasher, washerdryer, fridge and basic crockery, cutlery and pots and pans. The building, from 1855, has been refurnished offering modern living spaces without compromising the 19th century architecture, with large wooden windows and narrow balconies with stunning views to the city.
M BAR - FAMILY CAFÉ The M Bar is our cosy family café lounge and offers buffet breakfast as well as a tasty selection of healthy homemade snacks and light meals for lunch and dinner. In a 19th century building, the interiors mix traditional curved ceilings and Portuguese tiles with contemporary furniture creating a stylish and unique ambience. Our famous VW Campervan, a trademark favourite toy for kids in other Martinhal properties, has become a BMW Isetta - more suitable for the city - and is part of the M Bar furniture! Breakfast baskets with pastries items, fruit, milk, yoghurt, jams and fresh orange juice, as well as an in-room dinning menu for you to enjoy in the comfort of your apartment is also be available.
KIDS CLUB Kids are central to our philosophy at Martinhal. In Martinhal Chiado, we have created a superb kids club covering the ages of 6 months to early teens where kids can be looked after by our caring and responsible staff in a safe and secure space while parents enjoy their time in Lisbon – even at night! Our pyjama club looks after children at night and ensure that they feel comfortable even if they fall asleep in our custom-designed club, enabling parents to have a night out in the bustling city of Lisbon! The various areas in the Kids Club have been created to interest and stimulate different age groups – we are conscious of the needs of babies up to teens and we have the full range of toys, playthings and entertainment. If you prefer to have your children looked after in your apartment, baby-sitting can be organised for any age from a few months old upon request.
BABY CONCIERGE Hassle-free travelling with babies and small children is our specialty. In addition to the Kids Clubhouse and baby-sitting facilities, we also offer you the opportunity to pre-book baby equipment – from small items like door protectors, potties, bottle sterilisers & warmers, to bigger items like safety gates, baby cots and baby baths. Please note that we also offer a wide variety of lotions, nappies, and other items for purchase from our reception.
ACTIVITIES & RECREATION Lisbon the least discovered capital city in Western Europe. With a lot of its old town feel preserved in its historical buildings and its cobbled stone pavements and pedestrianized areas with “calçada polida Portuguesa”, Lisbon is an amazing city to visit. Visit riverfront Belém area where you’ll find Unesco’s World Heritage sites such as Belém Tower, built in early 16th century as part of the city’s defence system or Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese late Gothic Manueline style of architecture. The Maritime Museum, Planetarium and Archaeology Museum are also in this area. Don’t leave Belém without tasting the original “Pastel de Belém”, the traditional Portuguese custard tarts that you can find in most Portuguese cafés. The recipe dates back to the 16th century and has suffered some alterations in most places. However,, at “Pasteis de Belém” they still use the original recipe! Other interesting museums are the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum - Treasures from the East and West; the Berardo Museum World-class collection of modern art; the Ancient Art Museum Fascinating Oriental and European art; the Design Museum - One of the world’s leading design collections; and the Tile Museum – A history through the ages of ancient art form in Lisbon displayed in a lavish old convent; the Orient Museum – the Portuguese in Asia and Asia in Lisbon; and the Carriage Museum - The world’s largest collection of magnificent royal coaches, just to name some. Kids love to explore the city in one of the traditional trams or in the tuk-tuk and Lisbon’s parks, gardens, belvederes, many with children playgrounds are great for a relaxing moment. Parque das Nações is the modern part of the city, a futuristic glassand-steel district, home to some wonderful examples of modern architecture. This is the location of the Lisbon Oceanarium, one of the world’s most spectacular aquariums, designed by American architect, Peter Chermeyeff - a “must-see” for adults and children. The Chiado area is full of excellent cafés and restaurants for experiences outside of the hotel – all within a few seconds to a few minutes. The famous market-turned-sophisticated-food-court, Mercado da Ribeira is located literally 5 minutes from Martinhal Chiado. A large part of the Lisbon experience is dining at one of the acclaimed restaurants by various rising Portuguese stars, experiencing the bars in the trendy Cais de Sodre or Chiado areas, enjoying a rock concert at the Coliseum or Fado night in Alfama. There are many options for shopping: from shopping malls, such as El Corte Inglês, Chiado area, to Av. da Liberdade, described as Lisbon’s Champs Élysées where you ‘ll find designer brands such as Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Boss, etc.. Beach and fantastic golf courses are just 30 minutes away, accessible by train from Cais do Sodre station/ by taxi.
