Precautions and Tips Related to Total Hip Replacement Surgery and Its Recovery Hips are the most frequently used part of the human body, and they wear out with the long years of strain. At old age, one is left with few options but to consider surgery for the hips. Total hip replacement surgery, or hip arthroplasty, is a treatment for severe arthritis of the hip joint. Arthritis can cause pain. A hip replacement is recommended when the joint pain is causing disability that has a serious effect on your day to day activities. By replacing your arthritic hip joint with an artificial one, surgeons try to stop your hip joint hurting, help you move more easily and finally, improve your quality of life.

The total hip replacement surgery replaces the ball and socket of the hip joint and fits artificial parts there. A ball escalated on a metal stem is placed into the thigh bone (also called femur) and a surgery specific plastic cup is inserted in the socket. The bone affected by osteoarthritis is replaced by these components only. At times, a special grout for the surgery is used to fix new parts. It is medically known as ‘bone cement’.

You may also have to undergo revision total hip replacement in case the earlier one fails to work. Common causes for the failure could be excessive use of hip joint, and infection in the operated region. You need to take some precautions and follow some vital tips after both first and revision total hip replacement surgeries. Here are some of the basic ones:

a) You may require some toilet equipment to

raise

your

toilet

seat

to

the

appropriate height. Ensure that the toilet paper is within easy reach and you do not have to bend to reach it. b) You must have a solid stool or high chair in the kitchen, so that you do not have to stand for long while cooking, or doing other kitchen tasks. c) You may also need elbow crutches initially, post surgery. d) You must not drive without consulting your surgeon first. However, most people can comfortably drive six weeks post operation. e) Be very careful about your meals. Just follow what your consultant says. However, eating restrictions will not last for long. f) Do all exercises regularly that your surgeon asks you to do. These will help you to get back to normal routine quicker. g) Do not miss any appointment with the surgeon/consultant as several changes in terms of diet, medicines and routine life will be confirmed on every appointment. All this will help you a lot.

While the above given precautions and tips are some general ones for the post operative phase, it is imperative that you must choose a good surgeon in your region who could successfully perform the operation and thereby ensure total recovery. Just search the Internet and get a detailed review done for the best surgery centers in your area.
