I investigated spatial configuration of materials which affect work of each smart materials through study between hand made model, digital model and machine model. Hybrid material as cube is possible to involve divers elements within their work. This lead to new material property. 2 CUBE - 24

As material excises, I looked into materials reacts sunlight. This is classification of materials. Every material is related to sunlight but works differently. I attempted to model a cube based on liquid crystal and photochromic material mainly.

This model is first attempt to model the on based on only liquid crystal. Many angle of cube model show various shadow shape. In this stage, I understood liquid crystal work as a micro louvre.

PHOTOCHROMIC CUBE : INVESTIGATION OF PHOTOCHROMISM How can I can mange level of photochromism to adjust colour of object? The answer for this question is change the geometry of photochromic material. The geometry change of this material cause different level of solar radiation, which makes different level of colour change.

WEAVED PHTOCHROMIC MATERIAL AND LIQUID CRYSTAL LOUVRE I used liquid crystal to change geometry of photochromic material. Rotation of liquid crystal change geometry of photochromic material, then make different radiation levels. It can balance between UV absorption and colour change effect.

WEAVED PHTOCHROMIC MATERIAL AND LIQUID CRYSTAL LOUVRE 3D MODEL I made 3D model of the louvres. Each louvre reacts electricity current and change the angle of itself. This cause different radiation level. I found this angle change affect not only one louvre but also another one.

I found there several type of liquid crystals. I used to understand liquid crystal as pointed particle which only works two dimension. Through investigating liquid more, I understood liquid crystal is more like sphere and works three dimension. Deeply understanding material makes cube more spatial.

I simplified crystals as box tubes to make model easier,then considered composition of two materials. I passed photochromic material tube three dimensionally and put liquid crystals. Rotation of cube will make various shade for photochromic material and adjust there property changes.

BOX CRYSTAL MACHINE MODEL To manufacture cube made of box crystal, I touched each tube with crystal. This makes crystals like floating. SLS machine enable us to create fragile objects.

If I rotate cube, model works same as digital model. However,we still need to rotate cube itself rather than rotate crystals. It is still working as same principle first concept crystal model.

RADIAL CRYSTAL CUBE DIGITAL MODEL I made small frame which work as rail of crystal rotation. Finally, each crystal can rotate by themselves. Each geometry is decided by minimum tolerance of manufacturing by SLS machine.

RADIAL CRYSTAL CUBE MACHINE MODEL Manufactured SLS model works properly. We can change angle of each crystals. SLS can make object in object like this crystal. SLS machine enable us to create this complex cube. We can demonstrate work of smart materiality in this cube.

The achievement of this project suggest us that we can make functional model by machines. The machines enable us invent functional architectural components. Final model of cube can adjust solar radiation and absolve UV radiation. This cube could use as new smart glass system with this function which adjust shade and prevent people from UV exposure.
