MM2014 SCOPH Sessions After hearing about the tremendous amount of effort put into MM2014 SCOPH sessions, I had to expect 5 days of incredible orange sessions. But guess what? Incredible was just an understatement! The sessions were actually beyond all expectations. Starting on Mar.4th, we woke up to an enthusiastic opening session where SCOPHians were introduced to their international dream team and got to know each other through some lovely games and energizers. After that point, a stream of small working groups, external speaker sessions, trainings and joint sessions was amazingly dominant over the 5 working days.
We had small working groups (SWG's) on NonCommunicable Diseases, Organ Donation Awareness, Eating Disorders Awareness, Disaster Risk Management and Residency Programs, all led by highly motivated SCOPHians. We had the opportunity to tackle the challenges of public

health in the 21st century with the help of our external speakers, Dr. Karim Abderlwahed and Hamza Saddam. In addition to their sessions, SCOPHians had their own THEME EVENT session (cool enough?). It was such a special session where Dr. Jihen Maatoug managed to perfectly elaborate on noncommunicable diseases and medical students' engagement in related issues; it was simply one of my favorite sessions (until I realized it was my last one before saying goodbye). SCOPHians had the chance to maximally enhance their skills of managing, educating, advocating and researching through joining one of the training sessions on Project Management, Peer to Peer Education, Advocacy, and Research in Public Health. Along with the pure orange atmosphere of SCOPH sessions, SCOPH could take part in 10 Standing Committee Joint Sessions, among which we could choose two, including Mental Health, Global Surgery, Cancer Awareness and eHealth.
competitive sense was the Project Competition session, where some very inspiring public health projects were presented by SCOPHeroes among different NMOs. MM2014 was just the perfect time for the SCOPHian family, composed of more than 130 heroes, to discuss and adopt SCOPH Internal Operating Guidlines and help develop SCOPH Strategic Plan. The spectacular journey was concluded with our special orange group picture on the beach of sunny Hammamet. Marwa Kamar NPO at KuMSA, 2013-2014

N CD s upcoming events: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), literally mean diseases one cannot catch from another person. It´s quite different comparing to infectious diseases which used to be big threat of our health for many centuries. As alternative for NCDs we also use the name chronic diseases which simply refer to their longer duration (at least more than 3 months). To simplify this wide group of illnesses the World Health Organization (WHO) defines NCDs as these four: diabetes, heart disease, cancers and chronic lung diseases. They are responsible for 63% of all deaths worldwide (36 million out 57 million global deaths). To be complex we should also think about mental health (by many called as an all-to-often forgotten NCD. This group share four main risk factors. Exposure to tobacco, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity. Eliminating these major risks we can prevent most NCDs (at around three-quarters of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes and 40% of cancer). NCDs are global health issue, affecting women and men almost equally. More than 50% of them occurred before the age of 70. 80% of NCDs deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. They´re becoming
more than just health problem but a development one too. There´s strong association with socio-economic deprivation and poverty. It´s a bit vicious circle because NCDs are both cause and result of this distress. Since 2013 group of highly motivated people is fighting for a world free from preventable NCDs. This global social movement is called NCDFREE. We, as future healthcare professionals, are facing this global challenge. We should use our knowledge and power to initiate refocusing our health care systems- invest more into prevention to decrease costs of treatment. We should try new approaches, ally with other experts and advocate for better world. Iv a n a M r á z k o v á
