Intro:duction Welcome aboard PREPARE TO LEARN ABOUT MY JOURNEY OF FAILURES TOWARDS A SEMESTER OF FAILURE HELLO

First things first, i thought i should start telling my learning journey by introducing you to what led to my own interpretation of the course. A side of me this journey pointed out is my fascination and admiration of nature, i am always seeking moments and places that connects me to nature with the quality of isolation that allows for a purification of ones mind On many occasions I’ve been described as a perfectionist which is think should be a trait of every engineer, fortunately this makes me closer to the goal A very self fulfilling side of me is my desire to explore my planet, this instinct has driven me to the places I’ve had my best memories and experiences at. My ultimate dream is the sky where what one would find would be unprecedented, this is slowly shaping my hobbies my getaway now is not the sea but the desert.

With an impression that turned out to be completely false i started the semester with a fear of not being able to deliver work on the required level of depth. And it was a challenge as it was a take on architecture from a whole new perspective unprecedented to me. First, we started with a reading on fantastical towers which might seem interesting, every-time I told this to someone they were amazed and envious, but on my side, I felt it a huge challenge to try to match that interesting prompt.

Collective Effort Individual Lessons

TEAM WORK The Sceptics The team is an important part of this course as this combination of people fearing that we won’t make it or the idea is time consuming resulted in inducing an efficient work flow that taught us allot of time management and efficient teamwork for the first time through the 5 years

We all contributed to one thing we were proud of, but in the end each of us went through a learning process meaningful to each one in his own interpretation resonating in the projects later.

Ch. 01 Performative evocation instructed to communicate the concept through a bodily performance we were left puzzled with nothing to compare our ideas to THE LOGO SYMBOL

UNFILTERED

The need to use our bodies to send a message was a completely new experience for me, the need to come out with a play was met with frustration that led to an outcome completely unexpected for us

The way we knew absolutely nothing about what we are supposed to deliver made the discussion between us completely unrestricted and was not bound by any rules

MY INNER MONSTER

NEW RULES

This performance was a huge step for me because for the first time i did well on a performance watched by several people, I’ve always failed on my show-jumping tournaments when i know people are watching

Our architecture sense did not hep us in perfecting the performance as we faced some issues in the performance that led us to look at the output from another perspective

Ch. 02 Spatial Transformation

Story Book 11 // 60

Space Forming concepts

SPATIAL TRANSFORMATION Prompt We were asked to transform a space with our conceptual interpretation of the novel curating the experience

Story Book 12 // 60

First attempt 01 Statement RE-conditioning the subconscious reference by avoiding taking the ground for granted During this phase we started off trying to determine what to do. i started thinking with absolutely no restrictions, the concept we came up with this phase was the result of searching for the essence of living on bone towers fearing the ground and never touching it, the ground which we on earth take this fundamentally crucial reference for granted everyday without even thinking about it.

Story Book 13 // 60

The concept

Living on bone towers, people of the bone towers did not have the luxury of the ground that is so built within us we don’t even think of its existence. Therefore people of the bone universe must use something other than the ground they fear for reference.

The pattern The pattern was not the goal of this installation but reaching the pattern by using what’s above you for reference, and in order to guarantee that we avoided making the ground interesting in any way and we chose a point from which no clue of the horizon or the ground can be observed

The execution execution was key in the success of this transformation and it was so difficult, we started by forming the pattern in 2d from one location and then modified the two attaching points of each string in the 3rd dimension without ruining the pattern which did generate us the meaningless order for strings from anywhere other than the selected location

Location We chose a site that offers a buffer zone on the way to it magnifying the installation after a period of lack of stimulus

Installation the very minimal installation allowed for experiencing the site which aligned well with bone towers but was difficult in exciting in the complex way that only shows you the pattern from one point

Story Book 14 // 60

Second attempt 02 Statement -

Re-experiencing gravity as an opponent and an ally to the fear of the unknown During this phase we started off trying to determine what to do. I started thinking with absolutely no restrictions, the concept we came up with this phase was the result of searching for the essence of living on bone towers fearing the ground and never touching it, the ground which we on earth take this fundamentally crucial reference for granted everyday without even thinking about it.

Story Book 15 // 60

The concept This time we built on the previous statement however adding the element of the ground to the equation instead of removing it. We gave the ground just physical input and directed the visual input to the sky

We placed a rope high above the space with its end and beginning not visible in order to trigger curiosity with the option of discovering the unknown unavailable enforcing a recreation of the way people of the bone universe feared going outside but felt a thrill looking through the shutters

The first glance nothing is observed from outside drawing people in to expereince the space rather than seeing it from outside

The ground was viewed flat but when stepped on revealed another felt dimension that required the user to master his feel of gravity trying to expose the way gravity is the bigger reference not the ground

Installation Installing the ropes were risky this time in order to achieve the desired intent

Ch. 03 Cardboard Structures

Story Book 17 // 60

Novel shaped structure

THE PROMPT Over the next 2 weeks we allowed the concept to shape a space instead of manipulating a space to achieve the concept This had to be done through gaining holistic understanding of the structure of cardboard and the implications the novel can have on it

Story Book 18 // 60

Experimenting phase

The first time we got our hands on cardboard were only asked to experiment producing 3 systems that can span, create a wall and a floor, all with just cardboard, no glue no nails and no laser cut.

Material Dimensions 150 x 90 cm Thickness 6 mm Quantity limited

Story Book 19 // 60

Spanning Provided efficient wall system and a cantilever spanning which proved potential for large spans • Saves material as members brace each other • Provides strong and long free standing walls • Provides interesting stalactites aesthetic while spanning Structural statement a very modular system providing units that interlock together providing load transfer and lateral bracing, the modules create caving spaces that provided an intimacy feeling due to the spanning nature while depending on all other members for the stability of the system

Floor This system provided rigid flooring because of small spacing between members Properties • Good load transfer • Cannot create a wall • Creates limited spans • Robust Structural statement Each part is meaningless on its own when assembled together it becomes one system that provides one function that depends in its rigidity of the tensile strength of the cardboard

AESTHETICS

Provided long members fast providing time efficiency, but failed to show proof of effective spans • Monotonous • Bad load transfer • Small spanning • Weak bracing Structural statement the system provides a poor monotonous texture but can create interesting forms with each member acting separately with little structural assistance from other members

LAYOUT

Wall

Story Book 20 // 60

First iteration 01 Conditioning the subconscious reference by avoiding taking the ground for granted The first attempt all our focus was on whether we will be able to make a robust standing platform on a good height and what can of interesting form can the system create. so basically we were testing the limits of the material and the system. we faced allot of problems with efficiency and accuracy as having a modular system required all the members to be exactly similar which was a challenge since we cut all the units manually.

Execution Even though we agreed on certain dimensions to be set out on each unit we still faced issues in assembly. In addition , we adapted a smaller unit to create a more efficient roofing system that came out to be aesthetically complementing

Story Book 21 // 60

Form The form aimed to provide a ceiling for the main space created for the user, inspired from the way the bone towers creates an overshadowing enforcement of rules that protect the residents and provides a cosy intimate experience inside but although being so high, it provides a physical limit to my view of the sky. The from creates a floor that starts to create a space on the model itself and encloses an interesting space inside the form

Goal Testing the limits of cardboard, i wanted to see how high can a human be supported on a light structure of cardboard. This iteration we started with a 90 cm platform that was robust. it was so exciting standing on the proof that you can stand at such height on technically paper.

Feedback the model stood well and was impressive but lacked bracing on the edges since last member was braced by only one other member from one side, user ergonomics need to be put in mind and the kind of space created should be given more thought

Dimensions • 3.6 metres high • Highest load bearing floor 90cm

Story Book 22 // 60

Second Iteration 02 Re-experiencing gravity as an opponent and an ally to the fear of the unknown the second attempt was an attempt to optimise the model making, we created a template which turned out to be crucial to the neatness and rigidity of the final submission. we also got a feel for the design aspect as although we planned some changes and did allot of work producing the new alterations the model came out to be in a way similar to the preceding attempt which was a huge disappointment given the amount of work we did.

Execution The use of a template proved big potential helping us produce the much larger amount of units needed, however special bracing units were still needed to be custom made to insure a perfect standing platform

Story Book 23 // 60

Form the form evolved this time to allowing for physically perfecting the features of the design, the spiralling roof is now executed better and is he larger in magnitude making it more visible and more precarious. the base is now wider and growing wide downwards to allow for a stable standing platform.

Goal the goal this time was to optimise what we already had and to create a platform that can be walked on not just for standing. this platform created a need to think about the experience of walking on the model and what kind of experience would result. We also wanted to push our structural capabilities which was achieved making the standing platform at 1.2 m.

Feedback the base came out to be bulky unlike the top part which was dynamic creating an expression of two different entities. we still did not fully master the cantilever part but we did achieve the twisting dynamic we intended. the model was not inviting to the user as it is not respecting human dimensions

Dimensions • 3.6 metres high • Highest load bearing floor 120cm

more attention was given to the spaces achieved through the structure as we realized that the reason we build high is the space we get at the peak that has several qualities typical of ones journey to find the place of mental peacefulness that is achieved through the effort it took to reach the by nature intimate space at the peak

End of Ch. 3 A LEARNING JOURNEY OF TOUCH AND EXPERIMENTATION The cardboard project is a milestone in the architectures 5 year program, and for me it was a learning milestone. Proud of our product we learned so much with logic guided by experimentation, which is an extremely different approach from the rest of the program. Through the 2 weeks we learned to utilise the materiality of cardboard in order to create a logic for a system of cardboard. Such process turned out to be crucial given the universality of the process of developing a system we went through which frees us from closing our minds to the same structures used by everyone since the modern utilisation of concrete and steel.

Digitization a digital model helped optimize the process of assembling the model accurately and cutting the exact amount of units needed.

Story Book 29 // 60

370 Units

The interlocking of the units provide bracing as well making it act smartly as a whole system with just one type of unit

Dimensions 6.5 METERS TALL 3.5m x 2.5m 370 units

Mass production

370 units were produced in order to eliminate cardboard waste

Consistency

all the units had to be exactly the same dimensions with extra care fo the joints that had to fit snuggly on the connections

Floor plates

changes were adapted to improve the durability and usability of the model

CONCLUSION

The model provided a special kind of spaces that have a strong relation to each other defining a path for the next stage. The interaction between the user in each space was a key player as it provided a relation that was forcibly connecting. The verticality of the model started defining importance levels for each zone and started differentiating them which is the core essence of verticality .

Story Book 30 // 60

Ch. 04 Experiential Model 01 Moving on individually in the experiential model phase it was dreamy phase in which we try to translate the cardboard structure into a meaningful experience that could drive a form and create an experience. it’s interesting how each of us came out with a different conclusion to the cardboard structure and a different experience in mind that all have the same essence while all all producing interesting buildings.

Function the function we concluded from the cardboard was a temporary residence since as a function in its essence shared allot with the bone towers and building on what we deduced in the cardboard. a temporary residence makes users loyal to the entity as a whole a not to their individual units which was the case in bone towers.

Story Book 31 // 60

Inspiration • • •

My temporary residence is directed towards the primary renting user group which are expats, tourists and students. All these user groups share that they are in anew place which opened a very important need or potential to enrich the experience. a person visiting a city would be most interested in discovering it and capturing its beauty through his own set places he’d want to visit.

The experience • i wanted to create an enrich this experience in my building which aligned well with our concept in the cardboard. • i focused more on the way to man’s haven that is guided by his own definition of a experiential climax. i thought of having a way that people could personalise their journey towards their haven which shifts the climax from being the summit making it the space or the journey towards the cosy haven

Man’s Haven • • •

a man’s haven cosy and intimate enabling peacefulness moments that induce self reflection and deep thoughts Just like when wants to have some peaceful time he goes to his have whether its on the beach, a forest house or in the desert each of us has his own mind getaway. This getaway is guided by ones interest which i intend to recreate giving people the space they wish to live in each day

Program guidance •

The building volume should range from 100k m3 to 150k m3

Story Book 32 // 60

Ch. 05 STRUCTURAL MODEL CONCEPT The vertical of the bone towers posed the question of how is it standing so tall which is derived from the re questioning gravity dilemma which pointed out the essence of building so high is tricking gravity, by going exactly vertical you are being invisible to gravity the moment you step out of that vertical and inch outward gravity starts ti increase in effect Wood towers are typical in the perfectly vertical form due to the difficulties in building high rises with wood,

Concrete vs. wood The utilization of concrete along with wood had a very strong statement developing a language between wood and concrete that is not only metaphorical but also structural and visual The concrete created the contrast of less intimate spaces widening the spectrum of space intimacy providing me with an expression of public vs. private spaces tat now are in material and texture as well as size

Story Book 33 // 60

1:50 First Iteration

The experience Having interesting landmarks resonating within the building would create the intended experience The structure with its vertical nature would create a visual expectancy of a grid that emphasize any irregularity within the structure Execution The 1:50 model was a little challenging to create but result was great the model exposed many qualities that the material can create which helped build on to the full intended experience

Story Book 34 // 60

STRUCTURAL MODEL CONCEPT The vertical of the bone towers posed the question of how is it standing so tall which is derived from the re-questioning gravity dilemma which pointed out the essence of building so high is tricking gravity, by going exactly vertical you are being invisible to gravity the moment you step out of that vertical and inch outward gravity starts ti increase in effect Wood towers are typical in the perfectly vertical form due to the difficulties in building high rises with wood, Adjustments were made on the previous form to emphasize the use of concrete to create contrast of spaces

Concrete vs. wood the expression started developing but still was not properly displayed the full potential of the language that can result from the interaction between concrete and wood was not reached

Story Book 35 // 60

1:100 Second Iteration

Building it exciting this model was very challenging due to the scale, the large amount of columns and the perseverance to build it the same way it will load in reality made it even harder, however it paved the way for later models. The model stood at 80 cm which was even a challenge to transport the model did not get in my car.

Story Book 36 // 60

Ch. 06 DESIGN ITERATIONS

getting into the design phase we started off creating 5 digital iterations building on the structural model and all the previous phases. i tried to be as diverse as possible in the possible variations of the structure in order to insure full experimentation and that i‘m not putting any restrictiopns on my thoughts

Story Book 37 // 60

The first form evolved from the previous model trying to see the effect of adding the elevation and giving more focus to the spaces and the composition they are creating

This model evolved to create a better spatial quality in regards to structure for the public zones it also started having heavy concrete suspended in the top floors instead of making them grounded

This model started having a public realm connecting the public spaces on the outside creating a dynamic path through the building however taking precious elevation area from the residents

this model aimed for an experience that is totally enclosed inside the form leaving the elevation to the users and giving the world few peeks of the public spaces at few occasions

Turning the building inside out the vertical circulation is now on the outside making a barrier between the units and the world while giving people a glimpse of the interesting form waiting for them inside

Story Book 38 // 60

Development 01 Statement RE-conditioning the subconscious reference by avoiding taking the ground for granted The following week the development was in two directions in order two explore the potential of the two very different iterations presented

Story Book 39 // 60

A barrier to overcome The solid walls surrounding the building was decreased to just two elevations to allow a higher level of exposure that would be inviting to the users while improving the view for the residents

The core The public spaces start to pierce through the big surrounding walls and the wall is now partially transparent (curtain walls) though adding and subtraction the public zones start to obtain character and fight for attention

The execution Though adding and subtraction the public zones start to obtain character and fight for attention

Total area 332800 m2 Vertical circulation 2500 m2 Engagement 3180 m2 Residential 24120 m2

The zoning and spatial program were done in detail on this iteration due to the potential it showed it can be considered a development on both option 2 and 4 trying to combine their spatial and architectural qualities as they both complemented each other and achieved the concept

Story Book 40 // 60

First pin-up Statement

Self reflection that defines each users own path towards his haven through a journey of exploration

the details was an important part of this structure and the part i enjoyed doing the most as all the innovations that enable such a high rise structure of wood was in details.

Story Book 43 // 60

The common path showing the building form and the composition of the concrete walls creating and interacting with spaces creating different textures and different spacial qualities

An echo of Geneva the buildings public spaces reflect landmarks of Geneva creating a 3-dimensional path that sparks the user with points of interests throughout the journey to the home that is curated differently for each user

Vertical cul de sac the common path that embraces the towers POIs is eventually faded out in order to provide volumes of privacy for each user group in the form o vertical cul de sac

Structural-functional harmony the concrete structure interacts harmonically to create different textures and different types of spaces that are fulfilling the spacial needs of the public POIs while serving the structural integrity of the tower

Story Book 44 // 60

The Atrium THE STRUCTURAL LANGUAGE -

An idea emerged of a central public space that draws people into the building through small glimpses on outside and then draws them upwards to the building through glimpses of the points of interest overlooking the atrium Parameters Height 36m 8m less than the width of the building

Explanation: The adaptation of the public spaces on the ground floor into the interesting atrium serving the concept also had interesting implications on the structure, the initial idea involved arched concrete frames but the essence of it that elevated the design was the transfer of loads from the wooden columns to the frames in the air above the user

Story Book 45 // 60

The wooden Interpretation

THE FORM The form evolved to represent the user groups and functionally zoning the in order to improve the experience for each user group, challenging the common idea of how weak wood is, the intent was to totally suspend part of the form in a way that forces a truthful exposure of the structure which aligned well with he development of the atrium

Parameter 20 columns transferring load to concrete beams

THE WOOD STRUCTURAL LANGUAGE The adaptation of this idea evolved into a more rectilinear layout that plays without height enhancing the spatial quality of the public space and enriching the user with the dialogue between wood and concrete

The Challenge Why wood

01 Triggering exploration to curate a journey of self reflection towards man’s haven -

building a tower with wood is the greatest achievement of this design, incorporating detailing techniques that improve the spatial qualities of the design as well as utilise all members used in construction for the structural support of the building making it stronger and lighter, all this contribute to its unprecedented height. the current highest wooden structure completed in march 2019 stands at 85 meters (mjosa tower) Building with is becoming a duty and one of the last card we can use to save the planet proving to be much environmentally friendly than concrete having positive impact on decreasing co2 levels.

EXECUTION Explanation: This transfer of load was also difficult to be convinced that it can happen. Huge frames carry these columns with different heights to elevate the experience. Some of the wood suspended columns required tie beams at different heights which was a challenge as it could’ve ruined the Expression.

The most interesting thing about the atrium is the transfer of load from wood to concrete in the middle of the air. This transfer of load was also difficult to be convinced that it can happen. Huge frames carry these columns with different heights to elevate the experience. Some of the wood suspended columns required tie beams at different heights which was a challenge as it could’ve ruined the Expression.

Strucutre Axono-metric The structural components of the system all act together to carry the loads and brace the building, neither the concrete or the wood would stand alone they are designed together Understanding the fact that some concrete elements can be carried by wood was not easy, i had to calculate the load the wooden columns can carry and the weight of the concrete floors carried to get convinced. However the main dependants relation is the other way, the wood depends largely on concrete in bracing the building and the dependants of concrete on wood is restricted to some of the public spaces

Closing & Credits THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS STORY BOOK CLOSING

Through such a productive and impact-full learning process, i would’ve not gotten so far without the help of the instructors and the teaching assistance. This will definitely be a memorable semester and a milestone through the 5 years of architecture. The whole experience included an array of learning mediums and different experiences that lead to an exceptional learning process. Also I’d like to thank my group for their constant striving towards perfection, that some times led to frustration but also lead to the best project we are proud of.

Our colleagues always glorified the cardboard structure and made us have high expectations for it. They were right, it was a very interesting experience that would be difficult to recreate. We always tried to create impressing submissions and we as a group hope you like our final presentation and personally i hope Dr Mai and Dr Amr like my project and see the potential and depth i see in it.

With 1 year left to graduation, i am starting fearing the responsibility i will have as an architect of having a permanent impact on a resource like land, it is scary but is worthy as it is one of the roles one can have that has an impact on the world and on peoples life. i hope my field of study provides me with what i hope for from it which is extending my time frame of benefit to the world longer than my lifetime.

i also hope my job as an architect would not be replaced by robots and artificial intelligence after i graduate, would be a waste of time to be honest.
