LAYERED WALL SYSTEM RENZO PIANO CENTRE CULTUREL JEAN-MARIE TJIBAO

The architect(s) manipulated and deconstructed the form of the Kanak Chiefs’ houses to create a monumental sequence of rounded, airy shells. Ten of these shells strech along the hillside, varying in height from 65 feet to 91 feet. The methods used to create these shells was one tha the Kanaks used before. An intelligent passive ventilation system removes the need for air conditioning, making the building’s clean and natural air supply an experiential part of the Center’s design.

Piano’s elegant design sensitively used traditional Kanak Chiefs’ houses as a starting point for the Centre Culturel Jean-marie Tjibao. The objective for this project was to design a center that celebrated the Kanak Culture. The Kanak people underwent and endured an extreme period of exploitation. After two centuries they underwent a graphic independence movement led by Jean-Marie Tjibaou, for whom the center is named after.

The Tozzer Anthropology Building is a 35,000 square foot transformation of an existing library building. The Anthropology and Archiology building houses faculty and graduate student o ces, a library, classroom and seminar spaces, and provides accessibility to an adjacent museum complex.

The building was constructed re-using the building’s foundation, campus infrastructure connection, steel and concrete structure. The new masses created increases usable square footage by 29% with a copper roof volume, which rotates to capture daylight and strengthens a reading of the buildings a pavilion in the Peabody Courtyard.

An exterior porch had separated the building from the street infront and an unused tunnel prohibited access to the courtyard. This new design allows for public access to the street and a new connection to the lobby and the courtyard.

Campus

Weiss/Manfredi is a 140,000 square foot oncology o ce building at Novartis’ North American Headquaters. Its a ve oor open o ce work building connected by an ascending spiral of “living rooms” with views to the generous 230-acre campus.

The building is marked with wood nishes, column free spans, and clear glass. The living room spaces provide a common ground for distinct project groups to interact. The primary work areas are lled and are con gured for max exibility and interdisciplinary collaboration. Clad in the curtain wall of oscillating acid etched or a oat of glass product whose surfaces have been permanently altered through the application of a hydro uoric acid solution. The result is a translucent glass with a smooth and homogeneous surface. The building mirros the landscape and introduces an innovative paradigm for collaborative work.
