KOPPEN CLASSFICATION OF ULAANBAATOR

Ulaanbaator is a typical continental climate, large temperature difference between morning and evening, winter minimum temperature can reach -40 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature of 35 degrees Celsius in the summer. Ulaanbaator spring (five to June) is relatively short, until mid May when the weather gets warmer, the trees and green grassland. Summer (seven to August) day and night cool, strong ultraviolet light, especially in the desert region, rainy days and nights when the weather will suddenly become cool. Autumn (nine to October) the weather may suddenly become cold changing all the time, and even snow. Winter (eleven to April) very cold, long winter almost every day in the snow, the cold of minus forty degrees celsius.

CLIMATE OF ULAANBAATOR

Ulaanbaator is the coldest national capital in the world, with a monsoon-influenced, cold semiarid climate that closely borders a subarctic climate. The city lies in the zone of discontinuous permafrost, which means that building is difficult in sheltered aspects that preclude thawing in the summer, but easier on more exposed ones where soils fully thaw. Suburban residents live in traditional yurts that do not protrude into the soil.

Summer: warm and long Winter: bitterly cold and dry

Temperature&Rainfall

Average annual rainfall: 216 millimetres (peak time: from June to September.)

Average annual temperature:−2.4 °C (27.7 °F).

The dew point (Dew point), also known as the dew point temperature (Dew point temperature), in meteorology refers to the fixed pressure, the air contained in the water vapor saturated and condensed liquid water to the required temperature. At this temperature, condensation of water floating in the air, known as fog, while the solid surface is referred to as dew, and hence the name of the dew point

In the field research process, we found that there are a lot of pollution around our D&I:

1.

rain water pollution

Surrounding restaurants pull dirty water into rainwater collection pipline which will pollute the clean rainwater

2. construction waste pollution

There is a construction waste dump close to our D&I, directly piling up construction waste pile on the soil. At the same time, we found that there are workers around the garbage in the bath, this sewage directly into the soil

3. car park pollution

4. rainwater collected directly into the soil

It was found that the rain water collected by the D&I’s storm pipe was dripping into the bushes.

ORIENTATION FOR WINDS & PASSIVE

This is the WIND WHEEL of URAANBAATOR. On the WIND WHEEL, the predicted wind direction is represented by arrows, the wind speed is indicated with colours. The arrows point in the direction that the wind is blowing.

As the wheel shows that the most windy direction is the NORTH. Because the temprature of CHINGELTEI is really cold, they don’t need more wind to cool their room.On the contrary, they need to keep their room warm. So we need to keep our building oriented to have less winds in the cold climate.

Before: As can be seen from the first diagram, the east wind blows from the eastern side which has the maximum windows would pick up the heat from the room. Because of the cold climate, the people who lived here would feel quite cold, especially in the winter.

After designed: In order to keep warm, we need to minimize the number of windows on the eastern side. However, it is impossible to make it better only by shifting the location. Consequently, we decided to remove the eastern windows to less wind side. As the second diagram showed, we successfully cut down the main ventilation,as well as keeping it more warm.

Since the region we have chosen to be in a cold climate all year round, the local buildings will be the smallest opening facing the north. And as much as possible to increase the area of the roof in order to accept more heat. Local housing is not too high, so to reduce the area of the wind.

From the point of view of the results, if everyone on earth lives like me, we need 1.4 earth to survive. Relatively speaking, the way of moving and food, my carbon footprint is relatively high.

After five days of statistics, I try to make a change in food and travel. I try my best to eat local vegetables and cut down on meat. Control of intake of dairy products and eggs every day. About traveling, most of the time I choose public transport.

After five days of statistics, my carbon footprint has improved significantly. If everyone lives like me, a planet can support the resources we need in our lives.

Through the investigation, 27 slaves were serving me. Although this is just a general survey, but also prompted me in all aspects of the need to increase the respect for the labor force. In my opinion, physical and mental labor should be equal, but now there are many cheap labor in the society. I think the market is going to balance it all. The true value of the labor force will be reflected when cheap labor becomes less and less. The situation of the slaves will also be improved.

After finishing the survey, I feel quite surprised coz I got the result that I need 1.1 earth. In the past, I always believe that I have lived in a heaelthy, suitable and environmental-friendly lifestyle. However, I noticed that it is not enough at all after the test.

In order to change the situation, I try to change many anwsers. I found that it will be better if I use less transport and more renewable resource.

Almost all my clothes come from China, my coat is made in Dongguan, the short is made in Guangdong and the shoes is made from Fujian.

The interesting thing is the 3 regions is very close to each other. After doing the reserch, I found that the 3 regions are the largest garment area.

After completing this survey, I was very surprised, because I got the result, I need 0.9 earth. If I didn’t finish the investigation, I don’t know about it. Know these should be a lot of care about these problems, for us and our earth to eat, wear, with the use of the use, love our earth.

When I finished two times, I was even more surprised than before, and the result was much better than before, because I got the result. I needed 1 earth. It’s not the same with my imagination and reality. After a specific record of the results are not the same. But don’t give up or continue to work hard, not only is I still need to let other people know about these things, to design things to have a good examination of nature.

Worksheet: Where are my clothes made?

Look at the ‘Made in’ label on your clothes and find out in which countries they were made.

Find the countries on this map and draw a line between them and the country in which you live.

Write your name and the item of clothing you have researched (e.g. a sweatshirt) on the line.

I didn’t pay attention to see my each clothes is from where the production, I like to buy. Read a few clothes or most of the production in China, but there are some other countries to produce clothing, Bangladesh, Italy, South Korea, portugal etc.

WHOLE SYSTERMS & LIFE-CYCLE THINKING FOR SUBSTAINABLE DESIGN

WHOLE SYSTERMS MAP

The manufacturing process to produce SWG hangers consists of purchasing low-carbon steel wire or drawing wire from low-carbon steel wire rod, cutting the wire to length, and fabricating the hangers. After the wire is straightened and cut to length, the hangers are formed and painted. The process may be continuous or require separate stages to straighten, cut, and form the hanger, and painting may take place either before or after the hanger is formed. In all cases, the forming machines are dedicated to the production of hangers; they are not used and cannot be used to produce other products. When we use it, we need to collect the dirty clothes and put them in the washing machine. After washing, the clothes are hung up, and then collect them.

LIFE -CYCLE ASSESSMENT

The composition of the clothes hanger is simple. Its main components are divided into metal skeleton and plastic. Metal forming and injection molding process is mainly produced in the coat hanger. In the whole process, the most important LCA generating point is the raw material, the production and disposal.

BRAINSTORM SOLUTIONS

We think of four ways to do sustainable design. First, we want to use more corrosion-resistant metal to make clothes. Due to the discarded plastic components, recycling has become more easy. Second, we want to change the plastic into a more environmentally friendly, more durable hydrophobic coating. This will solve the problem of rapid aging of plastic in the sun, so that the longer life of the coat hanger. Third, we would like to change the shape of the cross section of the hanger, so that it is more durable. Fourth, we want to use memory metal to make hanger. This can save space in storage.

By calculating we found that changing the material for manufacturing and recycling will be a little help. But the most important is to improve the life of the coat hanger. In all these ways, the way in which all metal is made is a more practical way.

OBSERVATION

Fun place lies in the “lip” nepenthes. They do such a thing: in the “lip” inside one drop of water, the water should be “against the” tramp over mountains and through ravines gravitational potential climb to the other side of the “lip”. If I were to study this thing, I am afraid that all of a sudden the conclusion: the capillary effect. However, in fact, the capillary action does not explain the whole mechanism: the process is one way, that is, if you drop a drop of water from the “lips”, then nothing happens. Under the microscope, the process of water transfer is clearly revealed.

Researching & Conclusive

After some research, we found that the pitcher can digest insects to meet fundamental nutrient needs, after capturing these insects when they aquaplane on the peristome surface, which is completely wettable by water from rain, dew or high humidity and by nectar secreted from extrafloral nectaries at the pitcher’s inner margin.

As these microscopic images are shown, the structure of the edge of the insect trap has a number of scales. A large groove about 450 m is formed by a small groove of about 50 ten mu m, and the liquid is restricted to move in a large groove.

Further analysis can be found, there are some in the minor groove in an arc structure. It is these arc structure affects the transmission of liquid. This map shows the characteristics of arc structure. The structure is visible arc wedge hole laminated, hole edge and an angle changing step. They use high-speed camera revealed that the process of water transfer, in fact, is to climb the steps of the process.
