Ground Floor Plan

Vacation Cottages

PK Arkitektar

In 2012 award winning architecture firm, PK Aritektar was invited to and won a competition for vacation cottages for the Association of Academics in Iceland. The firm designed 20 carbon sensitive cabins located in Brekkuskógur, South West of Iceland. The cabins most prominent feature is its mending of the natural landscape into its sloped roofscape. The team at PK Aritektar wanted to create a semirural design using natural materials. With a goal of reducing carbon footprint as much possible.

” The building is a wooden construction resting on a concrete base. The exterior is clad with burnt hardwood paneling, utilizing a method well known in Japan, among other countries, to enhance the durability of the wood. The roof is a grass layer fused together with the surrounding slope, a traditional method used in the old vernacular turf houses in Iceland. The interior is composed of a floor finish of smooth-polished concrete, with walls and ceilings cladded in wood panels with the same intervals as on the exterior cladding.”

The construction details were left simple in order to cut down oncostly maintenance. The structure was erected using recycled materials, environmentally friendly systems such as geothermal hydro energy, all in accordance with the national ecological standards. Lastly but surely not less, the site is a picturesque parcel of land of the beautiful Iceland greenery and amazing views of lake, Laugarvatn.

Micheal Green Architecture

The former tallest modern all timber structure, The Wood Innovation Design Center. Is still the benchmark for efficient timber design in the modern world. An 8-story mixed use building located in British Columbia. The structure was erected in 2015 and won a short list of notable awards such as the 2015 RAIC Award of Excellence for Innovation in Architecture. The project just like its name’s sake, Truly innovated in the construction and detailing of its wood curtain wall system. But more on that later.

“WIDC is about celebrating wood as one of the most beautiful and sustainable materials for building here in BC and around the globe. MGA have been champions of this message for quite some time and have been able to connect to a very global conversation of possibility. Our goal is to use the WIDC design as a stepping-stone for further innovation and scale that will continue to grow the wood story and industry.”

The architects wear their design on their sleeves so too speak. By featuring their innovative all wood timber structure and its summitry with the glass panels. The detail is then repeated throughout the floors. ” This is the best way to ensure that the BC wood economy grows: Through repeatable meaningful innovation.”
