VACATION VACATION
The main focus of the design is to create a semirural architecture that blends in with the landscape and the surrounding mountains. Earthfrom the excava on is used to form a windprotec ng bunker for the outdoor terraces and help fuse the roofscapes of the cabins with the surrounding sloping landscape. Vegeta on from the excavated footprint of each building is preserved throughout the building process and reinstalled on the roofs, when completed. The building is a wooden construc on res ng on a concretebase. Theexterioriscladwith burnt hardwood paneling, to enhance thedurabilityofthewood. 5
Theroof isagrass layerfusedtogether with the surrounding slope, a tradi onal method used in the old vernacularturfhousesinIceland.
VACATION VACATION
The interior is composed of a floor finish of smooth-polished concrete, with walls and ceilings cladded in wood panels with the same intervals asontheexteriorcladding.
The houses u lize geothermal hydro energy from specially drilled sources inside the site boundary to promote minimal environmental impact, crea ng cabins with close to zero carbonfootprints.

The composite load bearing baths consists of solid walls of concrete and thin slabs of Vals gneiss rock the place, broken or cut to size in the quarry just behind the village. Zumthor designed its building stone res ng par ally within the side, as if formed by nature. Due to the monolithic nature of the bath house, the building is also heated by the thermal mass. These three layer heights run through the whole bath from top to bo om. Layer on layer. Without excep on. The en re structure extends to a width of approximately 58 meters and cuts as far as 34 meters into the slope in front of the main building of the hotel complex, a unit erected in the 1970s and which stands at the northeastern corner of the property like a sweeping gesture with its four rows of loggias overlooking the grass-covered roof of theTherme.

This assembly consists of an aluminum curtain-wall system fastened to a ver cally laminated LVL structural frame. The system is s ck-built and siteglazed with triple-glazed units that are argon filled with low-e coa ngs. Cedar-clad rainscreen walls. The wall assembly consists of structural insulated panels protected on the exterior with a highperformance, liquid-silicone air and moisture barrier membrane. All joints between the SIPs are sealed at the interior and exterior side and are insulated where gaps occur, for air ghtness and condensa on control.
The SIP panels and cri cal barrier membranes are ed directly into the curtain-wall assembly. The panels are clad with a panelized tongue-andgroove, fire-treated cedar cladding that have either a natural or charred finish, depending on their loca on.

COMPONENTS
D.07- GREEN ROOF: Provides thermal mass, carbon capture, fresh air, natural biodiversity & habitat, rainwater filtra on and natural UV protec on D.07- FILTRATION FABRIC: Helps filter out larger par culates to prevent clogs & build-up in the perimeter drainage system
D.07- WATERPROOFING MEMBRANE: Prevents excess moisture accumula on in the green roof from penetra ng the roof system structure
D.05- METAL ANGLE: Perforated barrier to allow water flow, but prevent green roof materials from eroding into the drainage system
D.07- PERIMETER DRAINAGE: Water from the green roof is directed through a series of filtra on toward the roof perimeter and gravity fed to the in-ground perimeter drain to divert water from the building
D.07- VENTILATION SPACE: Allows for airflow between materials to prevent moisture accumula on D.07- FIBER CEMENT: Lightweight, moisture resistant and durable material substrate to provide support for the green roof
D.07- VAPOR BARRIER: Provides con nuous condensa on control and prevents moisture accumula on between temperature differen al materials
D.07- INSULATION: Installed between joists to reduce thermal transmi ance for interior climate control
D.09- CEILING CLADDING: Interior surface for finish material (in this case hardwood strips affixed via joist system)
