DESIGN STARTS WITH PEOPLE
For Shan, the process of design begins with looking at the need within the community. Focusing on a hands on approach, she first assesses the site and surrounding community; working to understand the local culture and atmosphere of the space. Shan places a keen and positive spirit on creating spaces in which users will enjoy.
Throughout her past four years at the University of Oregon she has constantly pushed the boundaries of design, focusing on creating new and innovative spaces. She is constantly trying to examine and research what is next for the built environment.
Starting as a business major, Shan was able to examine from a new perspective how her ideas may or may not work for potential users. She uses this background and her minor to think about the true functionality and feasibility of a space.
Her main passion resides in making common building types a enjoyable environment for all. Leaning into Healthcare types and other Civic buildings in which the user may not always share positive experiences with. She enjoys the challenge as it pushes her to collaborate with others and design unique solutions.
TOPOGRAPHY STUDY
PEARL DISTRICT PORTLAND9TH AND CONCH
The site being located within the downtown Pearl District of Portland Oregon, creates a pretty neutral surface. There is a slight incline throughout the span of the building.

BUILDING CONCEPT
BREAKING THE PATTERN
The overall concept of this was a to create a gradual movement of space to learn about what has led up to where we are at today. Therefore, each floor has it’s own set purpose.
Basement: History of Racism in Oregon
First Floor: Personal Stories and Impacts of Racism on Oregon Residents
Second Floor: Celebration of Local Artists
Third Floor: Research on People’s Perspectives Today
Organic Forms: Break the Buildings Pattern

BREAKING BARRIERS
COLUMN GRID
The entire building is laid on a 15’ x 15’ column grid. The idea of having two organic forms that spam multiple floors is influenced through the idea of rebelling against the pattern. The breaking up of the space is a piece of art itself as it resembles the fight of Black Lives Matter and evolving as a society.

WALLS
BREAKING BARRIERSAGAINST ALL ODDS
The existing exterior of the site used a concrete structural system with columns and walls. To cover the concrete a stucco was placed on the exterior and plaster on the interior. Due to the two sides covering the concrete, I had difficulty showing the wall materials in fine detail.
WALL AXON
This axon shows the two wall types around the exterior of the building. The basement uses a basic concrete retaining wall (thick black line) while the, upper floors have the wall as shown (thick red line).
STAIRS
BREAKING BARRIERSAGAINST ALL ODDS
Throughout the entire building there are four total staircases. Two serve as fire exits, one being located amongst he front facade used as an art piece. Within the interior the main staircase is used as transitions space, while also displaying work allowing for people to slowly move throughout the building.

PERSPECTIVES
BREAKING BARRIERS
AGAINST ALL ODDS
The building houses a variety of spaces includinf exhibition halls, presentation hall, and a cafe space. Using the views in revit perspectives of the presentation hall and cafe were added to show the usage of large curved forms thorughout the building.
CAFE PERSPECTIVE
This view shows the entry and cafe space, giving the viewer and understadning of the space layout.
DEFINING SPACE
Using enscape materials were added to the model to demonstrate and evoke diffferent feeings within different spaces. The cafe is meant to be light and warm, whereas the basement exhibition is a timeline looking into the dark history of racism. After pulling these from enscape they would then be edited in photoshop allowing local artists and other work to be added to the displays.
GROUND FLOOR EXHIBITION
Basic layout and circulation within the ground floor.
DESIGN OPTION
BREAKING BARRIERS
MORE CURVES?
For the design option I wanted to experiment with having a slighlty curved exterior to still keep the shape, but get rid of the harsh corners. Overall looking at the options, I do like the smoothness the curves add to the design, but I think its goes against the the main concept of breaking the barriers with the cuves cutting through a more box-like shell.
RECTANGULAR OPTION
Harsh edges, providing clarity to users on corners.
