Saint Benedict Chapel

The Saint Benedict Chapel, located in the village of Sumvitg, Graubünden, was designed by the Pritzker Prize Laureate Peter Zumthor in 1988. The modest, human-scaled exterior of the chapel encapsulates the beauty and simplicity of Zumthor’s works, while the interior showcases his unparalleled craftsmanship. In an interview with The New York Times, Zumthor once explained his process: “When I start, my first idea for a building is with the material. I believe architecture is about that. It’s not about paper, it’s not about forms. It’s about space and material.” [1]

Tozzer Anthropology Building

The building was converted from an existing library and is located in a courtyard surrounded by several museums on the Harvard campus.

The Tozzer Anthropology Building works by reusing the existing building’s foundation and steel and concrete structure. A new copper roof increases the usable area of the building, and can be rotated to capture daylight, making the relationship between the building and the courtyard closer.

The facade of the building uses brick, a traditional building material, and through the use of digital modeling technology, recreated the visual effect of brick.

INTRODUCTION

Wood Innovation Design Centre

Wood innovation and design centre is located in the city of Prince George in northern British Columbia, Canada. the WIDC was conceived as a showcase for local wood products and as a demonstration of the province’s growing expertise in the design and construction of large wood buildings. This building serves as a gathering place for researchers, academics, design professionals and others interested in generating ideas for innovative uses of wood. This building was designed to implement the most important innovations to meet the design and safety standards of new buildings in British Columbia, Canada.

With a height of 29.5 metres, the Wood Innovation and Design Centre (WIDC) is the tallest contemporary wood building in North America. Located in the city of Prince George in northern British Columbia, the WIDC was conceived as a showcase for local wood products and as a demonstration of the province’s growing expertise in the design and construction of large wood buildings. mechanical penthouse). The lower levels will accommodate faculty and students enrolled in the new Master of Engineering in Integrated Wood Design (MEng), to be launched by the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in January 2016 and the new Centre for Design Innovation and Entrepreneurship to be launched by Emily Carr University of Art and Design in fall 2016. Academic facilities include a research/teaching lab that will support the design, fabrication and testing of wood products; a 75-seat lecture theatre; classrooms; a student lounge; gathering

public and private sector organizations associated with the wood industry.

Over the long term, the WIDC will advance wood education and innovation in the province, enhance expertise in wood manufacturing, product development and engineering – all of which will help to expand opportunities for international exports of products and services. In addition, its striking presence in the heart of the city will assist in the revitalization of downtown Prince George.

This case study describes the most important innovations that were implemented to meet design and safety criteria in what is a new class of buildings for British Columbia. These innovations included:

• The use of vertical cross-laminated timber (CLT) elements (including mechanical, elevator and stair shafts) to provide lateral stability to the structure;

• The use of superimposed (end grain-to-end grain bearing) columns to control shrinkage over the height of the building; and,

• The use of high strength proprietary connectors to speed construction and improve structural performance.

Figure 1 shows the siting of the WIDC in downtown Prince George (right).

NR = Not Required.

For SI: 1 foot = 304.8 mm.

a. R-values are minimums. U-factors and SHGC are maximums. Where insulation is installed in a cavity that is less than the label or design thickness of the insulation, the installed -value of the insulation shall be not less than the -value specified in the table.

b. The fenestration U-factor column excludes skylights. The SHGC column applies to all glazed fenestration.

Exception: In Climate Zones 1 through 3, skylights shall be permitted to be excluded from glazed fenestration SHGC requirements provided that the SHGC for such skylights does not exceed 0.30. c. "10/13" means R-10 continuous insulation on the interior or exterior of the home or R-13 cavity insulation on the interior of the basement wall. "15/19" means R-15 continuous insulation on the interior or exterior of the home or R-19 cavity insulation at the interior of the basement wall. Alternatively, compliance with "15/19" shall be R-13 cavity insulation on the interior of the basement wall plus R-5 continuous insulation on the interior or exterior of the home. d. R-5 insulation shall be provided under the full slab area of a heated slab in addition to the required slab edge insulation R-value for slabs. as indicated in the table. The slab edge insulation for heated slabs shall not be required to extend below the slab e. There are no SHGC requirements in the Marine Zone.

f. Basement wall insulation is not required in warm-humid locations as defined by Figure R301.1 and Table R301.1.

g. Alternatively, insulation sufficient to fill the framing cavity and providing not less than an -value of R-19.

h. The first value is cavity insulation, the second value is continuous insulation. Therefore, as an example, "13+5" means R-13 cavity insulation plus R-5 continuous insulation. i. Mass walls shall be in accordance with Section R402.2.5. The second -value applies where more than half of the insulation is on the interior of the mass wall.

Floor system: 0.45(Gypsum)+1.25(Plywood)+0.71(Hard wood)+3.48(Air space)+(Insulation)=30, Insulation=24.11 Insulation material: Cellular glass (7”thick)

Roof system: 0.45(Gypsum)+1.25(Plywood)+0.94(Wood shingles )+3.3(Rock wool)+(Insulation)=49, Insulation=43.06 Insulation material: Polystyrene, molded (12” thick)
