The Campaign for Maryland Hall Building on a Community Legacy

The Campaign for Maryland Hall is an $18 million capital campaign to modernize and expand Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, the region’s premier arts center. The construction and improvements are being done in phases from 2013 through 2018.
WHAT’S NEW? In July, the installation of lighted ceiling reflectors over the theatre main stage began. This six-week project further improves the acoustics upgraded as part of the Fall 2014 theatre renovation. Look forward to an enhanced audience experience for the upcoming 2015-16 cultural season! WHAT’S NEXT? The construction of one of two new theatre wing additions that incorporates a loading dock, set fabrication area and new climate control equipment. And more to come: The second theatre wing addition brings a passenger elevator, improved ADA access, restrooms, gallery space and a major recasting of the lower (former) gym and surrounding areas to create flexible spaces for small concerts, exhibitions, events, and meetings. ARTSTART MERRY-GO-ROUND: MUSIC ALL AROUND Ages: 2-3 | Artstart Program Artstart Merry-Go-Round offers an early learning curricula in a broad setting, providing a gentle and encouraging independent class for children on their own. Students explore creative responses to the preschool world through involvement in multi-arts activities. Working with Kindermusik, art, dramatic play and creative movement contributes to accumulating a spectrum of responsive abilities. Children do not have to be potty-trained to enroll. Arts & Crafts for Children DRAWING, PAINTING, AND SCULPTING ANIMALS Ages: 3-6 | Debra Soreff Get messy, have fun, and learn about animals! Basic drawing, painting and sculpting techniques will be explored using charcoal, pastels, acrylic paint, watercolor and clay. Learn to draw realistically, work with color, basic color theory, how to mix paint. Students create one project each class meeting and clay projects will be fired and glazed using bright colors. GRAPHIC NOVELLA Ages: 9-12+ | Andrea Olney-Wall Become both author and illustrator while creating an actual book. Start working on your story now and bring a completed story to the first class! This class will transform each student’s Novella to a colorful graphic design as they learn to draw figures, costumes, landscapes, weather elements and architectural structures. BEGINNING BALLET 3: PRE-POINTE/ INTERMEDIATE/ DEMI-POINTE STRENGTHENERS & STRETCHES Ages: 10-12 | BTM Faculty Students begin preparing the legs and feet for pointe work through a combination of pre-pointe appropriate physical therapy (PT) exercises and ballet technique. Students will work with therabands and other PT props to strengthen the appropriate muscles in the legs, feet, back, and abdominals to prepare students anatomically for the arduous work on pointe. Students will begin this work in soft technique shoes, but will progress to wearing pre-pointe/demi-pointe shoes. The Director of the School will fit students in these shoes via appointment at Dance Supplies, etc. in Severna Park. Prerequisite: Mastery of Beginning Ballet 1 & 2 work, a minimum of 2-3 years of ballet training and consent of faculty plus 3 technique classes per week. The Academy Ballet School of Annapolis follows the Royal Academy of Dance Graded Syllabus for classical ballet training. Offering the finest teaching curriculum for classical ballet, character dance and lyrical free movement modern dance, the Academy Ballet School is directed and staffed only by RAD certified and professionally trained teachers. Our mission is to encourage, foster, and provide for every child, regardless of age or ability, the joy of movement and a love of dance. Professional excellence in the understanding of careful and technical training is what the Academy Ballet School of Annapolis is known for. DRAWING DOGS Ages: 18+ | Nancy Van Meter Learn classical and contemporary drawing techniques as you learn how to draw beautiful dogs. Referring to historic references and our photos, we will learn how to draw on toned papers with single and multicolor pencils, tri-color pencils, pen and ink, wash and ink, pastels and silverpoint. Instructor will provide prepared papers for each technique, but students will also prepare their own papers for class and future use. Finding shapes, developing textures, expanding light and shadows will help take this, or any artwork to a higher level. ADVANCED PAINTING BIRDS IN GOUACHE Ages: 18+ | Ric Conn This class begins with a brief review of external avian anatomy. An understanding of the external anatomy of our feathered friends is a valuable tool in creating the paintings. Tthe nature of gouache, and the different brushstrokes will be reviewed. Color—both paint and feather—is a primary component in painting birds, and understanding both is crucial. We will explore both color mixing of paint and how we see color in feathers and then explore the fundamentals of painting in gouache, as well as composition and overall presentations. Compositional design, subject size and placement, color mixing, color application, matting and framing will all be covered and we will also explore different techniques used for painting birds of various sizes and color patterns. FRIDAY MORNING PORTRAIT CO-OP Ages: 18+ | John Eden The Portrait Co-op provides the opportunity to work independently from live portrait models in a relaxed, collegial environment once a week on Friday mornings. Portrait subjects return to their pose for three consecutive sessions to enable artists to progress toward completion while working from life. Portrait subjects are drawn from both professional and non-professional models. Co-op members bring a diverse level of artistic background and the ability to work independently. These workshops do not include critique or instruction, but provide attendees the opportunity to work at their own pace with materials of their own preference. The usual model fee paid by co-op members is $7 per 3-hour session. About the AACPS Student Scholarship Assistance Program
What if my class is canceled?
Through a partnership with the Division of Advanced Studies and Programs of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Maryland Hall allots 20% of its annual enrollment for classes offered to schoolaged children as part of AACPS Student Scholarship Program. Only applicants from AACPS identified as students of need will be placed in classes. In order to qualify, students must be able to qualify for FARMS status. Scholarship applications and course offering booklets are distributed in schools for fall, winter/spring, and summer semesters. A course catalog and application form is available through the guidance office at each school or at www.aacps.org under Adjunct Programs.
Classes may be canceled if sufficient enrollment is not reached by the start of the class. You will receive a full refund including the tuition, membership and any additional fees. Please register early to ensure your class will run.

Maryland Hall doesn’t pro-rate classes. What if I wish to withdraw from a class? Membership, registration and material fees are non-refundable. If you wish to withdraw from a class, there is a $5 service charge. Refunds may take up to two weeks to process. About the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts (MHCA) Scholarship Program

To keep the arts accessible to all our community’s students, Maryland Hall’s Scholarship Fund enables students to take classes for free or at reduced fees throughout the year. Scholarships are funded by individual donors, corporations and foundations. Scholarship applicants must be 18 years of age or younger, demonstrate financial need and an interest in the arts. Scholarships are available to cover class tuition and materials fee up to a maximum of $200. Important note: Applicants applying for ballet classes may only apply for beginning level classes that require one class meeting per week. Scholarship recipients may not re-apply for one calendar year. Application deadlines: Winter/Spring semester –December 15; Summer Semester–May 15; Fall semester–August 15. Recipients will be notified within 15 days of deadline.

Student Behavior policy To ensure a pleasant artistic experience for all of students: • Students are expected to come prepared for and to participate in class. • Students are expected to treat the faculty, building and fellow students with respect. • Students are not allowed to possess or consume alcohol or controlled substances in or around the building. • Smoking is prohibited inside the building. • Students who are consistently disruptive during class time may be asked not to return by the instructor; no refunds will be issued.
