Miniatures Workshop

Ages: 18+, Nancy Van Meter The history of miniature artworks extends back to the 1500s. They were originally created as portraits, meant to be carried as love keepsakes, before the invention of photography. There’s a growing interest in miniatures with an increasing number of shows and collectors supporting their revival. Today, any subject can be depicted in miniature. Portraits, still life and landscape will easily translate, once an artist knows a few simple techniques. Basic drawing and painting skills are helpful. Students choose their favorite medium (oil, watercolor, drawing, pastel, collage). Supply list provided. Miniatures are the original Valentines!

Painting Birds in Gouache

Ages: 18+, Ric Conn The class begins with information on “avian anatomy as an aid to avoiding the most common mistakes in drawing birds,” and then feather coloration. These are valuable, and interesting, aids in understanding the characteristics of birds which the students will be painting. Students will next be introduced to Gouache and begin to explore the medium. The students will learn the techniques and materials used with gouache. The instructor will demonstrate each step and guide the students as they create their own paintings. The students will use mounted birds and photographs as models. This class is designed to teach the various techniques applicable to gouache and to enable and encourage the students to begin to develop their own style of painting in this medium. This class will focus on color patterns and feather grouping — what we see when we look at birds in nature — and not intense detail. Email the instructor for supply list at: ricconnartist@ yahoo.com.
