Drama & Theater for Children Classic Tales
Classic Tales is a multi-sensory approach to guiding children’s experience with literature in a classroom rather than stage environment. After reading each tale aloud, we work as a group to express the story dramatically. We arrange props and simple scenery, choose costumes from the collection, use speech and song to tell the story and move expressively to instrumental music for processions, dances and other plot elements. Children will make props which they will take home at the end of the class. Parents watch the final minutes of each class to view our work.

COLOR PENCIL MAGIC Ages: 18+ | Jane Halliwell Green Explore the exciting, versatile and sophisticated medium of color pencil which has grown in popularity among fine artists during the past 20 years. It is clean and portable, therefore a perfect medium to carry during travel. We will review the tools of the trade including papers, pencil brands, erasers and burnishing devices and explore color, color layering, and texture. A variety of new projects will include flowers, insects, landscapes, and animals. Combining pencil with paint as a way of capturing small details will be demonstrated. BLUE WORKSHOP Ages: 18+ | Nancy Van Meter Blue, a primary color, is one of the most prevalent colors in landscape, still life and portraiture. Since blue influences both light and shadow, it can easily “make or break” your painting. By forming a broad understanding of at least 5 different shades of blue, students will learn how to select the correct shade, temperature and value. Learning the difference between Cobalt, Cerulean, Pthalo, Ultramarine, and Prussian Blue will help you see and successfully apply more variations in nature and strengthen all of your works. Students may choose their favorite medium (oil, watercolor, color pencil, pastel). Supply list provided.

PAINTING BIRDS IN GOUACHE Ages: 18+ | Ric Conn The class begins with information on “avian anatomy as an aid to avoiding the most common mistakes in drawing birds,” and then feather coloration. These are valuable and interesting aids in understanding characteristics of the birds students will be painting. Students will next be introduced to Gouache and begin to explore and learn techniques and materials for this medium. The instructor will demonstrate each step and guide students as they create their own paintings using mounted birds and photographs as models. This class is designed to teach the various techniques applicable to gouache and to enable and encourage the students to begin to develop their own style of painting in this medium. This class will focus on color patterns and feather grouping — what we see when we look at birds in nature — and not intense detail. Email the instructor for questions and supply list at: ricconnartist@yahoo.com.
YELLOW WORKSHOP Ages: 18+ | Nancy Van Meter Yellow is a strong primary color, but with the many shades of yellow come many frustrations in color selection and mixes. By forming an understanding of at least 5 different shades of yellow, students will learn how to select the appropriate shade, temperature and value for their subject matter. Learning the differences between Nickel, Indian, Cadmium, Naples, and Ochre will help you see and mix more exciting tones to strengthen all of your works. Learn how yellow is a form of “perspective” and why lemons are never “yellow.” Students may choose their favorite medium (oil, watercolor, color pencil, pastel). Supply list provided. DRAWING DOGS Ages: 18+ | Nancy Van Meter Learn classical and contemporary drawing techniques as you learn how to draw beautiful dogs. Referring to historic references and our photos, we will learn how to draw on toned papers with single and multicolor pencils, tri-color pencils, pen and ink, wash and ink, pastels and silverpoint. Instructor will provide prepared papers for each technique, but students will also prepare their own papers for class and future use. Finding shapes, developing textures, expanding light and shadows will help take this, or any artwork to a higher level. Also discover how to sketch dogs from life (it is possible), create mastercopies and practice boards. Investigating dog breeds and anatomy will strengthen skills and expand portfolios. We will also discuss how and where to best exhibit and sell our dogworks. Basic drawing skills would be helpful, but are not required. Please bring a sense of humor and some photos of your favorite dogs to the first class. Instructor will supply photos if needed. Supply list will be emailed to students upon registration. We will also discuss how to promote and sell dog portraits through commissions and commercial venues. Basic drawing and painting skills would be helpful, but are not required. Please bring a pencil, sketchbook, some photos of your favorite dog(s) and a sense of humor to the first class. Instructor will supply photos if needed Supply list will be given out and discussed at the first class.
