THE APPALACHIAN 1940
Published b y the Senior C lass of
M ARYVILLE HIGH SC H O O L MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE
FOREWORD Again an Appalachian Staff offers the students of Maryville High School a book intended to keep alive the memories of the school year 1939-40. We realize that as a work of art or a classic of litera ture this issue of the Appalachian falls far short. But it was not our intention to make it anything other than a record of the daily happenings of the student body of Maryville High School. If, in the years to come, this book opens to you the lanes of memory and carries you back to our school days, we will be happy.
MAIN BUILDING, Maryville High School
The students of Maryville High School are indeed fortunate to have the fine building and equipment that are theirs. The Senior Class, on behalf of the entire school, takes this opportunity to thank the City of . Maryville for our wonderful building.
APPRECIATION The pictures on the covers are the property of Jim Thompson Company, Knoxville, Tennessee. The pictures on pages seven and forty-five are reproduced from prints belonging to the American Air lines. Decorations appearing in the book are reproduced with the permission of the National Association of Manufacturers.
DEDICATION This edition of the Maryville High School Appalachian is dedicated to that one factor in our community that makes it possible for our school to exist. We dedicate our book to LOCAL INDUSTRY. Too few of us realize the part that Local Industry plays in making schools possible; the part it plays in assuring our personal happiness and security. Let each of us consider the source of our parents' income; let each of us consider the source of taxes that build and operate our schools; let us con sider the source of our future income. These three things alone present over whelming evidence of the fact that we must more deeply appreciate Local Industry. The dedication of this book is done in an effort to foster more appre ciation on our part for Local Industry. The Aluminum Company of America has been chosen to symbolize Local Industry. Other businesses and industries are not being overlooked in this choice for their contribution is acknowledged and appreciated, but the Aluminum Company is selected because it is generally accepted as our leading industry.

The name of our home room is derived from that of our sponsor, Miss Gamble. We are an unusual home room, almost to the point of being unique, as we have the fewest talented students of any home room in school. We intend, however, to be better known next year. One of the aims of our home room has been to improve our personalities. Toward this we have made a study of portions of Dale Carnegie's book "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Due to a great improvement of our scholastic standing we won the school scholarship cup for the second six weeks term. Some of our activities have been Red Cross registration, "Gone With the Wind" play for Stunt Night, two parties, and a glorious hay ride.

Our home room, the "Rebelteers" is under the sponsorship of Coach Boretsky. For the two semesters we selected Frank Kramer as chairman and Darrell Giles as secretary-treasurer. Our basketball team successfully fought its way through all opposition to win the championship in the school Home Room tournament. Our home room has been among the leaders in scholarship throughout the entire year, although we have not yet attained the coveted position at the very top. A good average is better than "high today, low tomorrow". At the Annual Stunt Night program we gave a view of the way our home room operates, with exaggerations.

This room selected a program committee for the first semester which planned all the programs. The second semester all took part in planning the programs by the simple method of assigning consecutive programs to different members of the home room. The programs consisted of musical numbers of various kinds, spelling games and contests. Due to the shortage of boys in the home room, we were unable to par ticipate in the home room basketball tournament, but contributed to the class tournament which the sophomores won. The Jitterbugs entered a Roman football game as their stunt for the annual Stunt Night program.

Our meetings are held in the library under the sponsorship of Miss Ott. Our programs have been very educational, as well as entertaining, and have been arranged by individual members of the class for a period of five days. The Ottshots have been interested in building up the library, and have contributed various books, including F ield B ook o f W ild Flow ers, Mathews; S econ d B ook of M arvels, Boylston; T ake It A w ay, Sam , Wing. To obtain this money, members of our home room sold candy at a football game and a basketball game. In sports our home room is also well represented. Our boys were runners up in the Home Room Basketball Tournament. At the beginning of Spring we had a hamburger fry. Everyone enjoyed this and wishes to thank our sponsor. Miss Ott for helping to make it a success. During our business meetings we try to follow the rules of parliamentary law as closely as possible.

The Black Eagles home room of Maryville High School is sponsored by Miss Mary Nell Black. Every Friday we have a regular business meeting, the other days of the week being devoted to programs, games, and various types of projects. In the spring our home room had an all day combined hike and bicycle ride to Look Rock. Just before Christmas holidays the entire Freshman class had a snap which was a very successful event. On stunt night we presented a stunt called, "The Parade of Stars." Al though we didn't win, we had lots of fun working on it. The members of the home room impersonated movie stars, presenting incidents typical of the star. We have all learned to know each other better and have a very enjoyable time at our meetings. 35

Our home room is called "The Sharp Shooters." It is a Freshman group with 32 members. Our sponsor, as you might have guessed from our name, is Miss Sharp. When the call for Red Cross membership came, we responded one hundred per cent, every member contributing. The program committees have had very interesting and educational pro grams. Some of our own group have been on programs and we have had some outside talent. The three Freshman home rooms had. a snap, which was greatly enjoyed by all and which served as our class party for the year. We found the home room work to be quite enjoyable and very helpful in many respects.

Miss Ray's home room was organized at the first of the year with an excellent staff of officers. Under their leadership we chose as our home room name, the "X-Rays". During the first semester we joined the other freshman home rooms in a very enjoyable party. At a meeting of the freshman class, a member of our home room, Helen Wilhoit, was elected the freshman candidate for carnival queen. When the Red Cross conducted its campaign for membership, our home room immediately responded one hundred per cent. For "Stunt Night" we gave an imitation of Glenn Miller's orchestra with Jack Tarvin as director. Our home room has more than the usual amount of talent. Three of our group are helping to represent Maryville at the annual High School Day. We are proud of our home room and we are hoping it will be possible for us all to be together again next year.

The Maryville High School Red Rebels tinder Coaches McCall and Boretsky had one of the most successful seasons in history, winning eight out of ten games and regaining the County Championship. The Rebels opened the season September 8th by defeating HarrisonChilhowee Institute 32 to 0 on the Maryville field. The next week the Mary ville boys went to Vonore, winning there by the score of 19-0. The Rebels next played their first night game at the County Fair Grounds, defeating Andrews, N. C., 13 to 6. On September 29 the Rebels journeyed to Morristown where they scored an upset, although losing 6 to 0. Morristown had one of the very best teams in the state. The next games, with Clinton, Everett, and Alcoa, were played at night at the Fair Grounds. For the first time in eight years Maryville defeated Everett, score 6 to 0. After defeating Clinton 20 to 7, the Red Rebels met Alcoa to decide the County Championship. The highlight of this game, which Maryville won 12-7, was a hidden ball trick by which a Rebel end ran seventy yards for a touchdown. The next week Maryville made its last trip of the season, going to Loudon and losing by the score of 6 to 0 a heartbreaking game played in rain, sleet and mud. In the next game Maryville defeated Porter by the score of 32-3. The final game of the season was won from Sweetwater in a thrilling finish, score 14-7.

BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM Coach McCall's Maryville High School basketball team completed a most successful season, winning 20 out of 23 games during the regular season and winning the Blount County Championship. Maryville defeated every team in the county twice except Walland, which defeated Maryville 21 to 20 in the next to the last game before the tournament. Maryville s other defeats were at the hands of the fast quintet from Pisgah, Alabama, and Central High School of Knoxville, which was later defeated by Maryville. For the first time in many years the Red Rebels were able to defeat the always strong Friendsville team in two games. One of the highlights of the season was the three day trip taken into upper East Tennessee, on which trip Maryville defeated the strong Johnson City and Boone Creek teams. In the 14th District tournament Maryville defeated Karns and Tennessee School for the Deaf before falling before Carter in the quarter finals.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Bessie Colvin, Shirley Russel, June Montgomery, May Belle Baker, Mary Phelps, Betty Milligan, Violet Farmer, Genevieve Bradshaw, Janelle Kizer, Wilma Phelps, Charlotte Stevens, Jane McCully, Betty W aters, Beatrice Stanfield.
The Maryville Rebelettes completed the most successful season that a Maryville High girls team has had since 1930, winning eight games and losing eight games. Of the games lost, four were lost by only one point and two by two points. For the first time in ten years Maryville defeated Friendsville, 25 to 23 in a close battle. The most outstanding games of the season were with Friendsville, Carter, Townsend, and Alcoa. Maryville handed Alcoa the first of its two losses of the season. They also defeated Carter. As this was one of Carter's two defeate of the year, this is considered quite remarkable. A large part of the team's success was due to the good work done by Coach Boretsky, who took charge of a girls' team for the first time during his coaching career. All players this season were freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, and as there will be no loss by graduation there should be an even better team next season. Maryville received the honor of placing one member, Genevieve Brad shaw, who is only a sophomore, on the all tournament team for the 14th District.
