STUDENT LIFE

Our hands have participated in many activ ities during our school days. We have had weary hands from building floats painting signs writing, writing, and rewriting rehearsing over and over decorating for the dances creating works of art making tackles (but never holding) trembling hands opening night making that first speech before the placing of the crown wiping tears of joy and sorrow guiding the way to a better tomorrow.

STUDENT CREATIVITY Home From the Mountains The neon signs were flashing, the cold wind began to blow His shoes filled up with water, as the rain turned into snow His hopes were dead, his eyes were red, and his wine was very low As the old man came in from the mountains. His tears fell on the sidewalk as he stumbles in the street People stopped to stare, but no one stopped to speak His life was em pty, the bottle his only friend As the old man stumbled down from the mountains. Up the dark staircase the old man made his way Wrapped in his ragged coat upon his cot he did lay Thinking o f himself and how he ended up this way Getting lost like a fool in the mountains. While there sleeping a vision did appear The face o f a girl he once loved so dear It was in the spring o f his life in some forgotten year When the wild flowers bloom in the mountains. She touched his worn face, and called him by his name Then he heard children, playing at their game In a little house on a hillside in some forgotten town Next to a river, that runs down from the mountains. With a mighty roar the big jets soar above the city street Things move o n -life goes on, the city never sleeps But for this old soul the dawn will come no more Because the old man has come home from the mountains. by Olivia Arr

There Is Only One You There is only one you, and there always will be Only one you in this world for me; others may pause as they happen by, And for the moment attract my eye; Others may flatter and even intrude, To fascinate me for an interlude. But I will return in a little while To the spell o f your love—the warmth o f your smile, For there’s only one you, and there always will be. Only one you in this world for me. by Sharon Adams

HOMECC

22

With the overall theme of Nostalgia, Home coming 74 was one of the most unique ever held at Maryville High. The days were filled with scurried activities such as the pie eating contest, the hula hoop competition and the tricycle race. An assembly highlighted the week with participants dressed in appro priate costumes for their singing and jitterbugging. The nights were filled with the cut ting, stretching, and stuffing o f crepe paper. Continuing the theme of Nostalgia, the Stu dent Council invited the football captains from 1926 through 1974 to return and be honored at the half time festivities Friday night. Most o f the captains returned and were recognized at the game and at a recep tion following the game. A special thanks goes to the Student Council for making Homecoming week an exciting and enjoy able one.

SPORTS

Sports at Maryville High are a very im portant part of school life. The hands of our athletes have been busy receiving the long bomb dunking the basketball knocking a home run driving down the fairway throwing the shot put hammering in the game point splashing their way to a victory raised high in ecstacy over that winning touchdown dribbling speedily down the court catching that high fly for the last out passing the baton shaking the hands o f our opponents controlling anger at unfair referees uniting the school with a feeling o f team spirit.

Cheerleaders 74-75: Sarah Lambert, Sheree Cate, Sherry Lambert, Mary Henderson, Teresa Aiello, Joni Gilbert, Hope Headrick.

Maryville’s cheerleaders are big instigators o f spirit at M.H.S. The girls learned many new techniques and cheers at Cheerleader Camp at Tennessee Tech this summer. They represented our school very impressively by winning 4 superior ribbons and 1 to bring home, 3 spirit sticks with 1 to bring home, and were finalists for the Dr. Pepper award. Throughout our sports year the cheerleaders show much enthusiasm and pep in their undying support of our teams.

Just as the leaves fall every au tumn, Maryville always has an excellent football team. The bril liant coaching staff develops the talents o f our athletes and forms a winning team. This year our team has fought valiantly every Friday night. Our boys bounced back from an unlucky defeat to roll over the rest of their op ponents until injuries weakened the team. The Rebels faithfully represented our school in their very difficult schedule and we are proud o f each and every one of them.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Teresa H ord; Debbie Metcalf; Nancy Talbott; Janice McCorkle; Kenna W hitehead, captain; Lisa A nderson; Becky Davis; Lockie Coleman, manager; A nnette Adams; Beverly Whaley; Vickie MaGuire; Pam Yontz; Kathleen MaGuire; Donna W hitehead; Mrs. Stephens, Coach.

The girl’s team this year has shown great improve ment, spirit, and hustle. Juniors, sophomores, and seniors have combined efforts to form a smooth run ning and winning team. For the offense, Captain Kenna Whitehead and Pam Yontz form a dynamite two-some, with the help of swift-footed Lisa Ander son and Annette Adams at opportune times. On the other end of the court, Becky Davis, Janice McCor kle, Vickie MaGuire, and Teresa Hord guard, re bound, dribble and pass their way to success. But the team could be nothing without a talented bench with Nancy Talbott, Donna Whitehead, Beverly Whaley, Kathleen MaGuire, and Debbie Metcalf.

SWIMMING

Swimming is not one o f the most recognized sports at Maryville, but the swim team is always one of the strongest in the state. This year is no exception. The 1975 swim team, led by Captains Libby Cochran and Holger Liedloff, has great experience and tremendous potential. Special recognition goes to Senior Doug Lambert who was selected to. go to the National Junior Olympics and finished 6th in the 200 meter freestyle. With participants like Doug, the team hopes to complete another successful year.

FACULTY

Throughout our years at Maryville High the hands o f our teachers have always been there leading all our efforts selling tickets to our ballgames sponsoring our clubs and dances handing out all those handouts making all those green ink marks reprimanding our rowdiness shushing our incessant chattering making all those useless gestures clapping for our accomplishments patting our backs in our disappointments helping us to learn not only school work but how to succeed in life.

The role of the Student Council at Maryville High has always been to plan for and rep resent the students o f the school. This year’s council has carried out their job exception ally well. Ably led by President Bud Gilbert, Vice-President John Olive, and Secretary-Treasurer Jenny Phillips, the Student Council sponsored all the daily Homecoming activities, the American Graffitti Dance, and the spirit chain. They have also worked hard on solving the smoking problems, improving cheerleading elections, and in volving more students in school decisions.

CLASSES â–

M.H.S. is a place in which we learn to study and learn to get along with one another. Between our three classes there have been hands defiant in competition clasping in love repenting after anger passes mischievous in practical jokes co-operating in support of the team pleading for class dues passing on the answers to last year’s tests tutoring the juniors with Barth and Ferguson clapping for the truly talented (and in pity for those without it) combined in a genuine love and respect for our school.

The last year at MHS! We know we love it even as we yearn to leave, There are all the friends we may never see again and the memories. . . winning the float contest 2 years (and it should’ve been three), leading the spir it at the best pep rallies in MHS histo ry, back-breaking rehearsals for two successful plays, a great comedy PIL LOW TALK and a standing ovation for our drama DARK OF THE MOON, decorating a beautiful winner for the hall contest, practicing, participating and leading the athletic teams at MHS, winning Powder-Puff game our junior year, first class to know all the words to the Alma Mater, and with gradua tion the last look at the school which played such an im portant part in our maturity.
