Dedication . . .

For the past tw enty-five years, Miss Dorothy

Reed has had the experience,

possibility, and pleasure of reaching the minds of the finest students who have passed

through M aryville High School.

She has prepared students for later life by setting a pattern of achievem ent that e x pects the most from each student, thor oughly realizing that it is her responsibility in a contemporary world which has its roots in the classics. Miss Reed is a teacher who is totally dedicated to shaping the minds of young people. No one can comprehend the lasting effects that the results of her teaching

have

had on M aryville High

School students. To Miss Dorothy Reed the Senior Class dedicates the 1968 APPALACHIAN.

Foreword MOMENTS TO REMEMBER.............. They begin the first day we enter the halls of M .H .S. as sophomores, com pletely confused and bewildered. Once into the routine of school the moments we best rem em ber begin to happen. On Friday nights we find ourselves involved in a football or basketball gam e, ac cording to the season. We becom e elated when the team is in high spirits and when the team is down, we are down too.

Lost in the crowd we find ourselves deafened by the

roar o f fellow students and adults cheering for our team . Then there is the last ten seconds..victory..or defeat. We work as a class on floats, on decorating for proms and twirp dances. With dedi cation we work at a ll our activities; be they football, cheerleading, public speaking, acting, or expressing our musical and artistic talents. There are our personal moments of defeat and victory. T he moment one girl is crowned homecoming queen; or a boy is elected captain of the football team . T he honor which is bestowed upon a boy when he is asked to join the Key Club and the personal knowledge that one is intelligent and strives to m ake grades to b e proud of. There are our moments of defeat when we lose a contest or miss the honor roll by one C +. There are our moments of happiness when we pass the exam we knew we would fa il.

A g irl’s happiness when she is finally asked to the prom. The happiness of not

having any homework and the pleasure of knowing that we have done a ll and more of what is expected of us by our teachers. W e find the ever-w atchful eye of our Principal as he stops us to exchange a kind word or give us a bit of encouragement. We remember our teachers who strive to teach us the things we need to know. At the end of each year we can each look back on a ll the good, bad, ridiculous and embarassing things we have done or been through. After looking back, we can then look ahead to the year to com e, wondering what is in store for us. As seniors, we look back on the past three years and wonder where they have gone to, and what we w ill be doing in the years to com e. The three years at M aryville High School pass relatively fast and these three years contain our MOMENTS TO REMEMBER.

This

is not the end.

It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning, Winston Churchill

In Appreciation . . . I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the following persons who have worked to make this yearbook possible: Mr. Pitts for his tim e and patience in sponsoring this Applachian. Mr. Roy Roberts for his tim e and co-operation. Mr. Tom Graham and Mr. Marvin Dockery for their photographic work. The faculty and students of MHS for their tolerance and co-operation. Mike Dunn, Steve Simpson and Leonard Lindsay for their excellent photographic work. And most of all, the Editorial, Business, and Circulation Staffs for their dedicated and tireless efforts to make this Appalachian one to be proud of for years to com e. The Editor

On behalf of the Appalachian staff and the students of M aryville High School, we would lik e to pay tribute to Mr. Walter M. W illiam s. During his nine years as principal of Mary v ille High School, Mr. W illiam s has tirelessly given o f him self to the school and to its faculty and students.

Students find him always w illing to help them with school projects.

His faith in M aryville High School and his devotion to the school prove that Mr. Williams has just as much school spirit as do the students. He is firm , but patient and understanding; a rem arkable person.

Mr. W illiams has helped in every way possible to make M aryville

High School what it is today.
