THE

APPALACHIAN 1941

Published by the Senior Class of

MARYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE

FOREWORD For some years Maryville High School has kept alive the spirit, the laughs, the joys, the heartaches, the precious mem ories of high school days by publishing an annual. It is in keeping with this tradition that we, the senior class, offer this 1941 edition of the Appalachian in the hope that in the future years this keepsake will bring to life dormant memories of the happiest days of our youth.

DEDICATION Particularly in times of stress we feel the strong, invisible bonds that unite Americans. Americans, a blend of people of rich character, fine culture, and high ideals to which all nations and races have contributed. Americans have alw ays loved and appreciated their democratic ideals—liberty, justice, equality—ideals which our forefathers upheld with dauntless courage. It is these ideals that we are ever ready to defend valiantly in the spirit of true Americans. And so we choose this opportune time to dedicate The Appalachian for 1941 to Patriotism, that trait of Americanism which shall ever pre serve this ideal life—life a s God meant it to be!

Coach Raffety

Coach Boretsky

Coach Paul Raffety came to us this year from Iowa, where he had an excellent record. With this successful experience behind him he developed a successful football team at Maryville High. Also this year he developed for us a championship boys' basketball team. Coach Raffety has won his w ay into the hearts of his boys. As the year has worn on, he has turned ac quaintanceship into friendship and has made fast and strong the bonds that bind him and his boys together by his understanding of and liking for his athletes. Those who this year graduate wish for Coach Raffety and his teams of the future great success.

Stinnett, Kenneth Hodson, J. W. Farr, Ross Honaker, Miller, C hares Henderson, Watts, Eugene Hamilton,

Although the football season of 1940-41 w as not a s successful a s some others have been, the boys did a good job. It w as necessary to become acquainted with a new coach and a new system of play. So the team gath ered speed and confidence a s the season progressed. Considering the type of opposition the team encountered this year—one of the hardest schedules ever attempted by this school—coaches, players, and fans feel that the team made a good showing and deserves commenda tion. Now that the boys are better acquainted with the new style of play used by Coach Raffety, they feel that next year Maryville High School will put a team on our newly lighted playing field that will rank with the best in our section of the state. Coach Raffety's first year at Maryville High w as certainly a successful one in basketball. He developed a team which won the Seventh District Tournament and gave Knoxville High an unforgetable fight in the regional tournament. The passing attack w as a great factor in the success of this year's team. Practically the sam e team will return next year. If the boys play with the sam e spirit shown this year we should be fighting for top honors in the state tournament.

Coach Boretsky's girls' basketball team concluded a very successful season, winning nine gam es, losing six, and tying one. These girls had one of the best passing system s in this entire section. This combined with their splendid spirit and eager cooperation made for a well-rounded team. In spite of the fact that Coach Boretsky loses two good players by graduation, he looks forward to a greater season next year.
