APPALACHIAN 1942
VICTORY EDITION
TUifaildAed fay, 6fte iPjemoA (ZtaM aft
MARYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL MARYVILLE, TENNESSEE
Men of Maryville High, we salute you! In whatever branch of the service you happen to be — Army, Navy, Air Corps, or Marines — we are proud of you. In camp, on the high seas, on foreign soil — wherever you are, your Alma Mater remembers you and honors you. In school days you fought for the honor of the school on the athletic field. W hen those days were over, you carried into various walks of life and there put into practice the principles you learned at old M ary ville High. W hen your country called, you responded in a manner that m ade your Alma Mater proud of you. You have a big job to do, and we know you will do it well. Then there can be but one possible end to the great conflict in which we are now engaged — VICTORY. The hundreds of you now in uniform will have a great share in bringing this about. W e a re proud of you. Men of Maryville High, we salute you!
V 2
IT pledge allegiance to ttroflAgofthe United Slates of ilAmerica and to the Republic foe which it stands;«K Nation indivisible, with libertyaud justice for all.
D E D IC A T IO N "On to victory!" That is the cry in the heart of all true Americans. W e of the United States have alw ays been proud of our freedom and liberty and of our nation. lust to hear the name United States makes our hearts jump with joy. The very word united shows how Americans feel, how they are together in defeat or victory. It will be victory! To prove our belief in final victory, we choose this opportune time to dedi cate The A ppalachian of 1942 to glorious victory!
V ... "O N TO VICTORY”

THE FOOTBALL SQUAD Giffin, Bob Mull, Lambert, Kramer, Murray, Hodson, Allison, V eal, C allaw ay, Sutton, Finley; Miller, Piper, Hoyt, Stinnett, Shepard, Coach Raffety, Keny, Baines, Morton, Denton, P oage, Pate, Hoyt Mull, Robertson, Law.
One of the most successful seasons in the history of Maryville High School football w as enjoyed by the Red Rebels in 1941. The team won seven gam es and lost only two — one of these to Everett who claimed the state championship. The high light of the season cam e when the Rebels defeated the highly rated Johnson City Hilltoppers by a lone touchdown. The senior lettermen leave the sguad and the school wishing Coach Raffety and all the boys the greatest success in 1942 and all the following football seasons. BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM M anager Jack Young, Bob Mull, Artie Spears, Bill Finley, J. L. Keny, Paul Hurst, Jimmy McDaniel, Coach Raffety, Cledith Giffin, Paul Miller, Tony Robertson, Eugene V eal, Dillon Moroney.
Suffering from the loss of several outstanding lettermen of last season, the Rebels got off to a slow start. However, they improved rapidly as the season progressed and finished looking like a championship team. During the season the team won twelve and lost ten. Of the ten gam es lost many were lost by one or two points. The smoothness developed by the team in the latter part of the season leads the fans to expect an outstanding team next year. The Rebels went to the semi-finals in the district tournament.

The cam paign ol the Rebelettes w as carried on this season under handi caps. It w as n ecessary to change coaches in mid-season, but when Coach "Nig" Wilburn resigned, Miss Gamble took over the coaching duties and brought the team through the remainder of the season in fine style. The girls deserve much credit for their fighting spirit and sportmanship. Miss Gamble is to be complimented on the excellent job of coaching she has done. The team won seven and lost eleven.

ADVERTISEMENTS The staff of The Appalachian of 1942 earnestly urges you to read the advertisements on the following pages and to patron ize the business and professional men represented there. Each is a leader in his own particular field. Our community would be a poor one indeed if it did not have these business firms in it. It would not have been possible to publish this annual if their cooperation had been lacking. They cooperated with us; now let us cooperate with them!
