F O R E W O R D hundred years ago a band of struggling pioneers in search of great treasure completed the trek across mountains, valleys, deserts, and rivers to discover finally the goal of their long journey —

gold!

Twelve years ago a group of twentieth century pioneers began the long trek over readin', w ritin', and 'rithm etic, football games, chapel programs, and that last final exam and now have successfully completed their search for another priceless treasure— education. Just as their fellow fortune-hunters of a century ago did, some will add greater wealth to their store, others will invest that treasure and work for its increase. As you look through the following pages, you will meet Maryville's '49ers and glimpse some o f the adventures, companions, diversions, and leaders they had on their journey.

WE

H O N O R

To M rs. Paul Beach, whose faithful guidance and service during our high school years have helped make our progress toward graduation smoother, we dedicate this 1949 edition of the A P P A L A C H IA N . H er neverfailing interest, her sincere advice, and her sympathetic under standing can never be overestimated. For these and numerous other endearing qualities, we the Senior Class o f M aryville High School are honored to express our gratitude and appreciation.

RED

REBELS

Losing only one out of ten games and winning the Blount County cham pionship for the third tim e in as many years, the boys on the 1948 football squad hit pay dirt both literally and figuratively. Scoring 169 points, making 115 first downs, and advancing 2 2 3 8 yards against their opponents' 54 points, 7 2 first downs, and 1327 yards gained, the M aryville Red Rebels compiled an enviable record. The tradition of good sportsmanship and team work was outstanding on the team of '4 8 and will long be remembered at M aryville.
