THE STUDENT COUNCIL Formed in 1946 by P rincipal C. D. C u rtis, the Student C ouncil has become one o f the m ost active and o utsta n d in g organizations in the fu n c tio n in g o f M a ry v ille H ig h School. T he m em bers, tw o fro m each class, are elected on the basis o f character, leadership a b ility , and scholastic standing. To express the opinions and ideas o f the stu d e n t body to the a d m in is tra tio n is the c h ie f endeavor o f the co un cil since it is the co nn e cting lin k between the students and fa cu lty. W h e n some M a ry v ille H ig h students end th e ir sponsor organized the Chess C lu b at the b eg in n ing o f the 1948-49 school year, it was p rim a rily fo r the purpose o f stud yin g the old and respected game. However, th e y soon fo u n d th a t the clu b p a rtic ip a tio n gave the m more: it developed th e ir m em o­ ries and reasoning power and it gave the m an in fo rm a l b u t encouraging co nta ct w ith the c ity 's M e n 's Chess C lub. M a ry v ille H ig h 's chapter o f the N a tio na l Forensic League was organized in 1941 to encourage p up il adeptness in p u b lic speaking, parlia m e nta ry law, and dram atics. First organized in 1947 as a c re d it course, the Journal­ ism Class succeeded the Newspaper C lub o f vo lu n te e r jo u rn a l­ ism. The class is composed o f selected ju n iors and seniors who have shown an in terest and a b ility in creative and factual w rit­ ing in English classes. M a ry v ille H ig h School was given the o p p o rtu n ity o f being among the firs t hig h schools in th is section o f the state to have a Safe D rivin g Class in its c u rric u lu m . This was made possible by the M a ry v ille Jaycees and local m erchants at the beginning o f the 1948-49 school year In this class, w hich is o nly a one semester course, the stu­ dents learn the m echanism o f the car and the fundam entals o f safe and sportsm anlike d rivin g . Each p up il m ust also obtain a state d rive rs' license before passing the subject.

T h is group consists o f boys le tte rin g in any o f the fo u r in te rm u ra l sports and m an­ agers o f the various teams.
