SCHOOL IS A COMMUNITY A F F A IR __ Because

we

believe

public

education

should be an outstanding factor in every community, the 1952 yearbook staff strives to portray that important link between a school and its surroundings. Not only busi nessmen or homemakers are essential, as these two join to form one organization; but also students— boys and girls who will, by the example of their parents, plan and build the communities of tomorrow. W hile

we

struggled

through

readin',

ritin', and 'rithmetic, we have also learned, we hope, those principles upon which we will base our lives as Americans,

Original ideas break out w ithout prom pt «

Individuals th o u g h tfu lly set about th e ir projects which include the chip-carving o f jewelry boxes, transferring designs on ash-trays fo r etch ing, and enameling coasters preparatory to p rin tin g varied designs on them. These pre sent only a few activities taken part in by the artistic girls. THESE CLEVER PEOPLE!

This w ill give its members practice in salesmanship — the purpose o f the club. They also have part tim e jobs and class work fo r training in retail distribution. Under sponsor, J. P. Under the supervision o f Calvin C. Dun bar, pupils desiring to learn the methods of safe and good sportsmanship driving, have an opportunity to get first-hand practice and sound instruction. Through the courtesy of local motor com panies and oil dealers, the class is provided with a drivers' training car and gasoline each year. D riving courses are extremely helpful in curbing the national accident rate through the proper education o f youth, and M ary ville takes pride in being one o f the firs t Tennessee cities to have such a course in its public school. The local Jaycees were instru mental in inaugurating the course four years ago. WHERE'S THE FIRE?

LEAGUE

According to the sponsor, Mrs. M a rtin Badgett, the purpose o f the N. F. L. is to promote the interests o f interscholastic de bate, oratory, and public speaking by en couraging a s p irit o f good fellowship, and by conferring upon deserving candidates membership in the organization. Its program consists o f trainin g fo r and participating in various interscholastic contests. The league's stress is upon creditable participation in these events rather than upon w inning them. It accomplishes this purpose by means o f a system o f incentives which always hold out new goals to a student as soon as he attains current ones. OH, PHAROAH! 12

FUTURE

HOMEMAKERS

W ith Mrs. John Sherrod, teacher o f home economics, to serve as the adviser, the stu足 dents at M aryville High annually organize a club called the Future Homemakers of America. Only those girls who have taken the subject at least one year in high school are now eligible to belong. W hen this club was started here nine years ago, it was merely a local group. Six years later it united w ith the national organi足 zation and became M aryville High Chapter o f the Future Homemakers o f America. A N D THEY C A N COOK, TOO!

FUTURE

TEACHERS

Newest of the M aryville High School clubs is the local chapter of the national Future Teachers of Am erica Club, organized here last fa!!. Realizing that a number of stu足 dents were interested in teaching as a ca足 reer, Miss Dorothy Reed decided to sponsor the group. Miss Reed is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers' sorori足 ty that has among its aims the encouraging of students to enter the teaching profession. A t present the club has 14 members, who are preparing to serve the communities of tomorrow in the nation's classrooms. Since it is customary for each chapter to be named for some well-known educator, the members decided to call th e ir chapter the Edith God足 dard Club for a beloved form er teacher here. W ith Mrs. Paul Beach serving as adviser, the journalism class writes, edits, and pub lishes the Red and Black, M aryville High School's bi-weekly newspaper. Since 1947, when the class replaced the old Newspaper Club, it has been offered as a credit course to upperclassmen. The Red and Black enters the approxim ately four hundred homes re presented in the school, and many of M ary ville's merchants place advertisements in its pages. FREEDOM OF THE PRESS 16

CLUB

Student help plays a substantial part in the library. The club members under the supervision o f Miss Helen O tt do most of the jobs in running a library. They shelve books, fix displays, act as desk assistants, fin d magazines, and make ^ u t book cards. In order to become and to remain a mem ber, they must, work at least a half-hour each week and m aintain average grades. This club has proved its usefulness by the aid it gives to students and teachers alike. IT M UST BE HERE SOMEWHERE!

There has been "M u s ic in the A ir " for several years in M aryville High School. The M. H. S. chorus, under the direction o f Jack Connell, has gained recognition not only in local civic affairs but during state and sec tional music competitions. Students enroll ing fo r this course learn to read and under stand music. Requirements fo r entering this class are not stringent. Each person must know how to sing or have a desire to learn. Upon entering, he is placed in that section which best fits his voice. Many, in the choir, fin d a relaxation from th e ir more formal educational courses. A L L TOGETHER, PLEASE

Sports play an im portant part among M aryville H igh School's extra-curricular ac tivities. W ell-coached and well-supervised athletics add much to the school sp irit, be sides benefiting those who take part. Foot ball, basketball, baseball, and tennis provide a balanced program o f activities fo r the school year. Football and basketball are probably the most popular o f the school sports. This year the Red Rebel football team walked o ff w ith the Blount County championship by defeat ing Porter, Alcoa, and Everett. M aryville's athletic program greatly in terests the whole com m unity as well as the students. Local citizens come out in large numbers to enjoy the games. The varsity led M aryville to the Blount County football championship and a suc cessful season w ith nine wins and one loss. This team is a credit to the school and to the fans who loyally supported it.

E D U C A T I O N One course which gives M aryville High School girls a period o f recreation and acti vity is physical education. Tennis, softball, volleyball, tum bling, and basketball prove quite a change from algebra, Latin, and other studies. Usually one special activity is engaged in fo r a six-weeks period. V olley ball and basketball tournaments provide high points in the year's work along w ith tum bling exhibitions.

Students o f M aryville High School may express th e ir wishes concerning school mat ters through the Student Council. This or ganization was introduced here in 1946. Each class elects one boy and one g irl, ap proved by the faculty, to represent it on the Council. W ith the aid o f Principal C. D. Curtis and Calvin Dunbar, these 12 students perform many duties, among which are help ing new pupils to become adjusted to M ary ville High and welcoming visiting groups and teams. The Council also performs a ser vice to the com m unity by securing ushers fo r home football games.

CLUB

A boy must have earned a letter in foot足 ball, basketball, baseball, or tennis by play足 ing in a m inim um number o f interscholastic games, or managing a team to be a member of the Varsity Club. This organization, spon足 sored by Coach Jim Renfro, encourages clean living, recreation, and good sportsmanship among the boys. One of M aryville's most recently organiz ed groups, the Y-Teens, is a ffilia te d with the Y. W. C. A. Since 1947 this club has constantly grown until it now includes 90 girls. Many of the group's projects, such as aiding the needy, help to strengthen the lin k between this school and its community. Miss Beryl Fox and Mrs. James Renfro are currently serving as sponsors of the senior and ju n io r divisions, respectively.
