Our School Means Many Things M aryville High's Alm a Mater, rem inis cent o f football gam es, pep rallies, and assem blies, provides the them e for this book. Around this them e is depicted M aryville High o f 1958-59. Never again w ill it be exactly the way it was this year. New faces w ill replace fam iliar ones as the class of '59 graduates and another group steps up to take its place. The im portance of progress made during this tim e w ill grow as this year slips further into the m em ories of those who lived it. "Old MHS w e'll always love you . . . " and in this 1959 APPALACHIAN are presented reasons for this everlasting love.

"OLD M. H. S. WE’LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU .. OUR SCHOOL TIES MARYVILLE’S FAMILIES TOGETHER.

From hom es com es education not taught in school. There, courses em pha size getting along with others and the practical arts of living. This education is not the formal, five-d ay-a-w eek type; but it means just as much. Parents work through the Parent-Teacher Association to co-ordinate these two processes of learn ing.

OUR SCHOOL RECEIVES COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Down Broadway our band m arched before football gam es; from the m erchants we so lic ited advertisem ents for our new spaper, y e a r book, and program s; and through the generosity of lo c al car dealers the H om ecom ing ca n d i dates rode through tow n in our biggest parade of the year. Our churches have developed our spiritual ideas and provided recreatio n fo r us. We have ap preciated not only the m a terial contributions of our com m unity, but also those intangible gifts of friendship, cooperation, and interest. In return we have tried to m ake these friends and neighbors proud of us. W hile we have struggled through reading, 'riting, and 'rith m etic, we have also learned, we hope, those principles w hich w ill m ake us the best possible citizens of our com m unity.

"... AS DID OUR SCHOOLMATES GONE BEFORE...” — ROY M. ROBERTS Because of his sincere interest in a ll of th e varied ac tiv ities of M aryville High School students and because of his challenging exam ple to them , the Class of 1959 considers it a priv ileg e to d ed icate this yearbook to MHS alum nus and teach er Roy M . R oberts. M r. R oberts' w isdom and w ide experience give him a sound basis for ad vising and helping his students as a m ath em atics instructor, a driving instructor, a senior sponsor, facu lty sponsor for the Key C lub and M u A lpha T heta, and a friend. He is a v eteran of W orld W ar II, holds degrees from the University of T ennessee, and teaches a Sunday School class at First B aptist C hurch of M aryville. Mr. Roberts a t tends all M aryville High School events and often accom panies students on ex tra -c u rric u lar trips. A ll roles sit equally w ell on the shoulders of Roy M . Roberts, to w hom we m ost affectio n ately de d icate this 1959 yearbook. 5

WISE LEADERS AND COUNSELORS MAKE GOOD SCHOOLS Our teachers and administration have been more than classroom educators; they have been our friends. Without dom inating, they have guided us. Where would this school be without its janitors and cafeteria workers? The room is frigid; the pencil sharpener refuses to work; there's ice on the side walks. Without a m om ent's thought a ca ll goes out for the janitor. If these m en were absent for even one day, all would feel more acutely the vital part they play in m aintaining the school's efficien cy. As to the cafeteria workers, it is utterly unnecessary to say that students liv e for lunch. Tasty m eals tastily served are always som e thing to look forward to. So to these able m en and women who co n tribute so much to make going to school pleasant goes a hearty "THANKS."
