FOREWORD During our three-year sojourn at M aryville High, we seniors have added immeasurably to our fund of knowledge as we mastered various courses of study. However, MHS has imparted to us infinitely more than many hard facts about subject m atter; during this short period we have learned about many of the perplexities of living and how to confront life ’s problems. Patiently the faculty has assisted us in our personal as well as our academ ic development. This dual role played by our teachers is truly representative of the spirit of teamwork which is so characteristic of our cherished high school. In these pages the APPALACHIAN staff has attem pted to present a comprehensive picture of the many ways MHS has contributed to her students' training for the gam e of life. We have endeavored to point out the outstanding work our high school has done to prepare us for useful and happy lives after we ultim ately pass through her portals for the last tim e as students. To our faculty we, on behalf of the entire student body, express our sincere grati tude for your making M aryville High a training ground for abundant living. And now . . . ON WITH THE ANNUAL!

Affiliated with the national organization, the Maryville High Parent-Teacher Association strives to develop closer co-operation between home and school. Meeting regularly, our parents and faculty discuss various means of improving parent-teacher relations, as well as becoming better acquainted. Through promoting a better under足 standing between teachers and parents, the PTA becomes one of our most stanch boosters.

BOOSTERS Robert Peery, Pres.; T. J . W hite, Sec.; Howard M cM urray, Treas.; C. R. B ailes, Sec.

The Rebel Club, organized in 1955, promotes, en足 courages, and rewards extra-curricular activities in Mary足 ville City Schools. The Rebel Club has two memberships, student and adult, each of which expires after the duration of one year. Among the numerous undertakings of the Rebel Club are the sale of season tickets at athletic contests, and ushering at football games. This year, in addition to these regular duties, the Rebel Club published a brochure telling the history of our alma m ater. Truly this extremely active organi足 zation deserves the appelation--OUR FOREMOST BOOSTER!

CLUBS To the spirit of teamwork, Maryville High's many clubs contribute cooperation, service, purpose, and organization. The primary purpose of the clubs is to m eet the needs and interests of the students; consequently, a number of organizations have evolved to furnish an outlet for the wide range of student interests at M aryville High. Through club membership, students learn to cooperate with one another and to sacrifice some of their own interests for the good of the group as a whole. Some clubs are organized as service groups to benefit both school and community. Other school organizations are instituted to bring students of common interests together in order that they may share ideas and develop the particular abilities. Still a third group of clubs exist to afford recognition of students in some particular field. Whatever one's interest may be, it can be developed and broadened in at least one of these school organizations; at the same tim e one can grow m entally, spiritually, and em otionally through the valuable training received in club-work.

Our Top T en Scholars

The Curtis Chapter of the National Honor Society, named in honor of the retired superintendent of the city school, Professor C. D. Curtis, was just organized this year. The members of the Beta Club, to which honor students were formerly invited, voted to become National Honor Society members. The N.H.S. strives to instill in its members four cardinal principles: scholarship, character, leader ship, and service. The society also hopes to influence others to work for these principles.

The Key Club, sponsored by Kiwanis International, is a service organization for high school boys selected on the basis of their scholastic achievements, leadership qualities, and citizenship. The local twenty-five Keyers strive to be of service to the school, to the community, and to their sponsoring Kiwanis Club. One of the most active clubs in the school, this year's members attem pted the monumental task of surpassing the accomplishments of the many award-winning MHS Key Clubs of the past. Some of their school service projects included painting the basketball backboards, publishing "Calendars-ofEvents," sponsoring the Basketball Queen Contest, and publishing a school directory. Community activities found the boys assisting at the Hillbilly Homecoming, assisting with the Tuberculosis Seals sale, and cleaning off the grounds around the old Sam Houston School. In Observance of Key Club International’s Support-Of-Churches pro gram, the local organization has attended church as a group for the past four years. 49

Realizing the truth in Mr. Holmes' state ment, members of the Forensic League attem pt to master the art of self-expression through in tensive study and practical application of the fundamentals of organization, elocution, and modulation. Under the competent leadership of Mrs. M artin Badgett, the club travels to schools throughout the area to compete in various speaking contests. In addition to gaining pro ficiency in rhetoric, FL'ers also acquire a broad and comprehensive knowledge of current prob lems as they debate and speak extemporaneously. STUDENT COUNCIL

Students enjoy the convenience of the Student Council store.

The Student Council is composed of three representatives from each class, chosen on the basis of their outstanding scholastic work and admirable personal characteristics. These Council members, under the leadership of faculty representative Emerson Watson, serve to promote a good relationship between faculty and students. One of the Council's major projects during the year is the operation of the Student Council store where school supplies are available for purchase by the students. Another important project is the sponsorship and organization of the Homecoming festivities which include the election of the queen, the afternoon parade, and the actual crowning ceremony. The Council also engages in many minor projects during each year. 64

ACHIEVEMENTS IN MUSIC

M AN T5

The influence of music in a person's life can 't be denied. Music from rock-and-roll to such classics as the 1812 OVERTURE, WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE, and Schubert's UNFINISHED SYMPHONY is enjoyed by everyone from a day laborer to a music theorist. And why not? What else in our grand country is so free and yet so pleasing?

THE COLORFUL Every fall the members of the M aryville High Band don their colorful red, black, and white uniforms and support our football team by presenting pre-gam e and half-tim e shows. It requires many hours of strenuous practice to produce the shows of such caliber as this group presents every Friday night during the gridiron season. Last October 10, our band journeyed to Bristol, V a.-Tenn., to com pete in the annual Bristol Marching Festival. Although, according to school enrollm ent, our band should have com peted in Class C com petiton, they elected to enter Class A; thus, contending with bands from schools over twice the size of M aryville High. The school is justly proud of the "excellent" rating they received.

OUR DANCE AND SYMPHONIC BANDS The music departm ent at M.H.S. would certainly not be com plete without the dance band, which has a great many activities. This group adds to every con cert, plays annually for the Halloween Dance spon sored by the police force, and entertains us after every home football game by playing for a dance in the old gym. Composed of the best from almost every section of the symphonic band, the dance band has won acclaim as being one of the best high school swinging groups in Tennessee.

Traveling throughout the area, our symphonic band has won acclaim as one of the finest groups of musi cians in Tennessee. Last February the band journeyed to Murfreesboro to perform before an assembly of band directors from all over the area. Every year the band participates in the East Tennessee band and Orchestra Festival for a rating. We are justly proud of the accomplishments of our symphonic band which is definitely superior in the world of music.

OUR TALENTED CHOIR Bringing out the sense of teamwork, the M.H.S. choir ranks highly as another member of our music departm ent. Our choir not only adds flavor to con足 certs, but also helps the band with money-raising projects. Every year the choral group competes in the Choir Festival, and every year it achieves a splendid rating. We are justly proud to be able to boast that our choir is among the best of the high school choirs.

BASKETBALL TEAM Coach Peek and the Starting Line-up With only two returning letterm en, Jimmy Gillespie and David Anderson, the Red Rebels lacked height, but made up the deficiency by their ambitious drive. The M aryville Squad was young--the m ajority being juniors with only three seniors. The Rebels were not as strong as last year's unit, but they fought hard. After losing their first three games, M aryville, led by Coach Leslie Peek, faced Porter. With Jimmy "Hot Dog" Gillespie hitting a field goal as the final buzzer sounded, M aryville won its first gam e--47 to 45!

In 1959 M aryville High organized a wrestling team composed largely of sophomores and juniors. This team challenged several schools to meets and gained valuable experience. Don't hurt anyone too bad, boys--but--Let's Go-Rebels-Go!

BASEBALL TEAM FIRST ROW: Dale Long, Larry Watson, Keith Wilson, George Pierce; SECOND ROW: Harry Hammontree, Ralph Maples, David Anderson, Jim my Gillespie, Bill Ross; THIRD ROW: Roy Gregory and Jerry Hodge.

Coach Ken Shepard's Red Rebel 1959 baseball team never reached its potential, but did gain valuable exper ience. With five seniors and six juniors returning from last season, the M ary ville Rebels counted largely on Jimmy Gillespie and David Anderson and gave trouble to any team they met.

Keith Wilson, Bill Odom, Lowell Ridings, E. R. Dykes, Dickie Banks, Roy Stinnett, Roy Gregory, Bob Stepp, Phil Renfro, John Griffitts, Jam es Gregory, and Donny Cochran.

TRACK TEAM RACKET SQUAD

After three weeks of hard training, the M aryville 1959 track team combined skill and effort to win the Blount County Championship at Junior Olympics held at M aryville College. These Red Rebels with some help from the sophomore class and the help of faculty-m em ber Emerson Watson, the new coach, should con tinue this fine record.

Max Gardner, Jim m y Britton, Bob Ballard, and John Davis.

With only four junior members, the 1959 M aryville High tennis team was rather inactive; but this spring with some newcomers, the out look for a live racquet squad to carry on the Red Rebel name is good!

OUR ADVERTISERS Now you’ve seen and, we hope, enjoyed our annual. The publication of such a book would not have been possible without the loyal support of those who were willing to advertise their products and b u sin esses in our yearbook. To indicate our appreciation in the best way is to patronize their b u sin esses, buy their products, and let them know that we of Maryville High will not overlook our local enterprises and the help they have afforded our school. The editorial staff would like to thank P at Pearson for his work on the pictures of this book. Mr. Pearson took and printed all the club, sports, and music pictures and most of the snapshots. His promptness, co-operation, and fine work have helped us more than we can say.
