FOREWORD Within these walls challenges are confronted and conquered, charac ters are molded and remolded, destinies are discovered, misplaced, and rediscovered - while the wheel of our nation's future fortunes awaits the cog to be inevitably supplied by this institution. We of the Appalachian Staff have attempted to present herein a comprehensive picture of the forces within Maryville High School which have had such an undeniable effect upon our lives. For three years these forces have shaped and reshaped, turning out a final product better pre pared to meet the challenges of the future.

What i f I have eyes that do not see This g aily colored world o f forms and show; What i f in the dark I always go, My footsteps led by sounds and m em ory; W hat i f autumn never dressed a tree In golden brown for m e to love and know; And what i f the sunset always hides its glow, And m orning's dawn does not unveil to m e: My father gave m e strength o f soul and m ind; My mother taught m e how to laugh and pray; My ears and nose and fingers are designed To bring m e know ledge, beau ty, work, and play I do not envy those who see the light, For I know my way and have no fear o f night.

IN APPRECIA TION. . .

. . .

for her untiring and unselfish service to Maryville High School, we, the Senior Class, present the

1964 APPALACHIAN in honor of Mrs. Paul Beach. Mrs. Beach retired last May, but her influence will always be felt at Maryville High School. For many years, the RED AND BLACK and the APPALACHIAN were published under her skillful guidance. Although she ably directed many extracurricular activi ties, a ll of us who were privileged to be in her classes remember her first for her superior ability as a history teacher. Her power as a teacher lay in exceptional knowledge of subject matter combined with a sincere b elief in what she taught. To her students she was able to impart a heartfelt love and deep understanding of freedom and democracy. The Senior Class of 1964 proudly presents this annual as a small tribute to Mrs. Paul Beach.

FOR MAKING POSSIBLE THIS YEARBOOK.

He has achieved success who has lived w ell, laughed often, and loved m uch; who has gained the respect o f in tellig en t men and the love o f little children; who has filled his niche and accom plished his task; who has le ft the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a p erfect poem, or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation o f earth ’s beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose m emory a benediction.

ALMA MA TER Old MHS w e'll always love you, As did our schoolm ates gone before; Upon your alters lay our trophies, O f fam e and honor everm ore. W e're proud of everything you stand for; And after school days have gone by, T h e m em ories o f these days w e'll cherish, At dear old M aryville High.
