D edication . . .

An understanding friend, a trusted counselor, and an indefatigable Good Sam aritan, Mr. Jam es Cummings did more to prom ote our school spirit than any other person has in the past three years. During his b rie f stay a tM .H .S ., Mr. Cummings not only taught m ath and physics but also served as the advisor for the A ppalachian, established wrestling as a varsity sport, and coached our tennis and wrestling team s to winning seasons. Remem bering his sincerity, am iab ility, and deep respect for the student's problems and opinions, we, the Editorial S taff o f the 1966 Appalachian, d ed icate this annual to him .

Fo rew ord It has been said that the years we spend in high school serve as a preparation for life . This m ay be so, but during these form a tiv e years we also liv e life to its fullest - physically, in te l le ctu ally , and em otionally .

In our search for m aturity we con

struct a m inute society o f our own, centered around the institu tion which dominates our lives, our high school. We lead a shel tered existen ce in some respects, protected from the fin an cial and id eo lo gical struggles which co m p licate the outside world; but w e nevertheless exp erien ce triumphs, anxieties, and tribulations which, though they may seem triv ial when viewed in the p er sp ective of la ter years, seem very re a l and important to us now. The success o f our society, as o f any society, depends upon the vigor and in itiativ e, not o f a few, but o f every individual who comprises it.

The sum to tal o f this vigor and in itiativ e is a

certain intangible quantity w hich may be called our spirit. A l though spirit is an abstract term , it is clearly manifested in our achievem ents, our ambitions, our recreation , and our ideals. The pages that follow are an attem pt to capture and record that spirit - the spirit -that is M aryville High School, 1 9 6 5 -6 6 .

W here is ou r spirit? It is r e v e a le d in the restless, searching m ind o f the stu d en t, whether he be asking his teach er to exp lain a hom ew ork assig n m en t, w ondering how he is g oin g to pass a te s t, o r w istfully ta k ing in sp iratio n from an open window . . .

. . .in the halls, the classroom s, and the cam pus o f ou r high school, in the quiet co rn ers where we go to study, to gossip, and to day dream , in ou r traditions and o u r heritage o f academ ic excellen ce . . .

. . . in the intensity o f our em otional participation in a football gam e, in the cries o f the ch eerlead ers and the bois terou s, turbulent m ood o f the crow d, in the striving o f the players to win h on or fo r their school, in the ecstasy o f vic to ry and the agony o f defeat . . .

. . . in our social life and ou r social ideals: the friendly smile, the sparkling personality, and the optim istic outlook, in ou r small scale r o m ances and ou r desire fo r popularity, and in those whom we idealize because they reflect our ideals.

B ut m ost im portant o f all, our spirit is revealed in the w arm th and enthusiasm gen erated by our fellow ship, as th ree separate classes and as one student body, and in the pride we tak e in th at fellowship.
