Dedication

It

is to a fin e woman and a devoted teacher that the senior class o f 1969

dedicates this edition of the A ppalachian. With certificatio n s in English and history she has taught for fourteen years. Seven of these years have been spent at MHS as senior class sponsor, advisor for the Red and Black, and instructor. Her warmth and personality have endeared her to many anM H Sstudent. This annual is dedicated to Mrs. Frances Volk - one of the brightest rays in the sun of M aryville High S ch ool’s new horizon.

4

Forew ord T h e early morning frost m ade the grass crunch under foot, but the first red speck of the sun had yet to burst over the far horizon. T h e crim son glow m et the dark blue of the mountains and formed a distinct o utline. No longer were the hazy valleys below a p itch b la ck . T h e deepest shade of royal blue was slowly creeping from the shadows. The crickets protested loudly to the com ing of the sun and warmth. Below in a solitary pine tree, the crisp slapping of wings announced the presence of a bird awakened by the com ing dawn. T h e darkness persisted. The deep crim son glow swelled to a dazzling yellow . T h e din of the crickets surged louder and louder. The bird burst into flight from the pine. Suddenly the light streaked forth across the v a lle y . As the cam era shutter click ed , the sun was captured half-w ay suspended in a new horizon.

New horizons for the M aryville High student are a v ariety o f experiences that

cen ter

around the high school. Getting an education, participating in

ath letics, or exceeding in scholastic efforts are parts of these experiences. They a ll differ with the individual who undertakes them . Each exp erience is colored with a different shade of em otion or feelin g . Each exp erience is m et with a different reaction . Y e t, everyone faces the new horizon w hich is opening before his very eyes. When he reaches high school, the student steps from the sheltering shadows into the searching rays. His life is awakened— disturbed into a new being. L ife hides behind the last row of deep blue mountains in the d istance. M aryville High School is the sun that suddenly lights the road onward toward that new horizon.

In Appreciation T h e 1969 A ppalachian is the result of long hours of work by many persons.

As the Editor, it has been a grueling job of coordinating the

efforts of these p eople.

Without their help, the 1969 A ppalachian would

b e nonexistent today. Mr. H erbert Pitts has again this year extended his tim e and support in sponsoring the annual. In addition to guiding the Editorial S ta ff through a sea of problem s, Mr. Pitts has supervised the tasks of the Business S ta ff in earning money for the A ppalachian.

M r. W illiam Largen’s work and

cooperation enabled the C irculation S ta ff to m eet its quota. T h e valuable tim e volunteered by Mr. Marvin D ockery was instrum ental in m eeting the February 26 d ead lin e. tion

T h e p atien ce displayed by the facu lty enabled the work of the Editorial S ta ff to proceed on schedule. T h e Editorial S taff which carried the greatest burden in actu ally producing the yearbook functioned w e ll. T h e responsi b ility for sports photographs was sk illfu lly handled by Jim M artin. Lastly, the deep understanding, to leran ce, and unselfish labor offered as a photog rapher by Chris Vinsant played a m ajor part in the production of the 1969 A ppalachian. T o a ll the persons mentioned above and to the student body of M ary v ille High Sch ool, I extend my hum ble thanks in the follow ing statem ent. Producing the 1969 Appalachian and d ealing with those associated with it has le ft me with an exp erience worth far more than the A ppalachian itse lf. M ike H artsell, Editor

Sch ool a ‘new horizon?’ ”

To some

the question might be, "W hy use a them e at a ll?

Why not just record

the school events month by month and forget the th e m e?” However, the them e does have a purpose. T h e them e a “ new horizon” is an o v er-sim p lification or a g en eral ized , if not idealized , view of high school life .

T h e application of this

them e tends to put things in their proper perspective.

For e x a m p l e ,

what does the

school have to offer the student in a th letics, scholastics the fine arts, and so cial a c tiv itie s?

Where is the

students p la c e in the high school? Does he fit in ? exam ined

These questions are

in the application of a

"new horizon, and the perspective is found.

Perhaps the use of a them e

gets a bit corny at tim es, but it does serve as a string with which to bind up the loose ends and m ake some sense of the many happenings at Mary

A sense of d ed ication to the school

Perhaps in the future some daring editor w ill choose as his them e

“ M aryville High School

As It Should B e .

He could

then analyze the problems that confront the modern high school and find the solutions.

T h e faculty must provide the guidance to seek solutions.

“ M aryville High Sch ool As It Should Be’ ’ would have among its students a sense of d ed ica tion to the school.

A yearning

to m ake school functions work, a desire to do m ore than is ex p ected , or a com pulsion to sup port a team is this sense of dedi c a tio n . It does not always com e naturally; it must often be nur tured.

N evertheless, this is the

essence of pride and spirit that comprises

the dedication to

M aryville High S ch ool. But how is this essence of pride achieved?

T he A ppalachian photog raphers know the sense of' d ed ication.
