Dedication For the past five years Mr. Pitts has served d iligen t ly as yearbook advisor. In this cap acity he has allowed his annual staffs great freedom in ed ito rial decisions, and his photographic ability has aided greatly to the production o f annual pictures.

In the classroom his

students have recognized the sam e sense of dedication that has been apparent to the annual staff. T he APPA LACHIAN staff takes great pride in dedicating this yearbook to one who has m eant so m uch to the annual as M r. Herbert Pitts has.

Foreword

It is the m en and women, boys and girls so poured in and out a ll day that give the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and m em ories. - Carl Sandburg

A gently sloping field green with a new crop of grass bordered by the empty visitors’ stands fills the foreground. Farther back two buildings surround the gridiron; one

an

building.

ancient structure with several newer additions, the other a new music These physical structures, serving as centers o f learning and a th le tic

com petition, com pose the primary portion of M aryville High School. And here they serve another purpose - they hold this book together just as they bind the school’s inhabitants together.

T here is nothing spectacular about these school buildings;

they certain ly would not win architectu ral awards, and there are undoubtedly other schools with sim ilar acad em ic fa c ilitie s .

Rather it is the students and facu lty

that m ake M aryville High School d istin ctiv e. T h e purpose of this edition of the APPALACHIAN is not simply the recording of the 1970 history o f M aryville High; it is much m ore. It is the hope of the year book staff that this book w ill truly re fle ct the life and personality o f M aryville High; and that through a look at the various elem ents composing M aryville High School, it w ill point out the distinctive characteristics of M aryville High.
