‘Rebs, you are the best!” The yells of MHS supporters resound during pep rallies, at football and basketball games, in the streets of Alcoa, and wherever a group of students gather. This year, spirit never faltered, even in the closest moments. The Class of ’71 is proud to dedicate this Appalachian to Rebel Spirit.

Editorial S t a f f Ladder diagram, gutters, bleed, layout, cropping — unfamiliar terms at first, but soon all too fam iliar to the hardworking members of the editorial s taff — Sarah C o rn ett, Serena Crawford, Linda Banks, Janice McCoy, Cindy McCollum, Anne Stanley, Ann Miser, Cathy Hagan, and Carol Luther — who began their work in August. Heading the staff was co editor Susan Lee. Due to working with a new publishing company, Hunter, the staff had greater freedom in their choice and arrangement of pictures. Several new ideas were tried in this year’s annual, among them: the red pages at the beginning and end, photographs in the autograph section, and a different type of paper. The 1970-1971 members hope that their new ideas have helped to adequately recount this school year in a unique and inter esting way.

P h o to g ra p h e rs Jimmy Scarbrough, Ricky White, and Roger Green, the photographers of this year’s Appalachian, spent many hours not only taking pictures, but also developing and printing them in the darkroom. Hundreds of pictures were taken, of which only a few appear in the annual. This yearbook would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work rendered by this staff.

A m e ric a n Field S ervice

I have to honestly say that my trip to Germany last summer was an expe rience I’ll never forget. It’s a hard feeling to explain, even to my family and friends. How do you say that you love Maryville and all that you have grown up with, but still yearn to be back with your German family? They really are my family! When I think of the little things we did together, it re ally tugs at my heart. It’s a once in a lifetime feeling, and my only wish is that everyone could share it! Liebe, Carole

75

Hi y’all! It has been a great experience to be with you at Maryville High this year. Even if many things have seemed strange to me, like football, pep rallies, dating, etc., I am glad I have learned about it. I have learned about other things too — American History for example. I have really felt I was one of you — struggling with homework, talking in the library, cheering at the games, etc. Thanks for being so nice to me, I just wish I could have gotten to know each and every one of you. Love, Dagmar P.S. I am just waiting to see my En glish teacher drop down dead when he hears my East-Tennessee accent! This year will always, for me, stand for the fun, education, and kindness I had in Tennessee and at MHS. The experiences I have had are, and will be of even greater importance to me, to my knowledge, and to the widening of my horizon. Furthermore, it has influenced my capability of tolerating other viewpoints and opinions, and of understanding other people and their problems. For this I thank you all — students, faculty, family, and AFS Chapter. With appreciation, Yours, Carl Henrik Skovdal

Band Supporting the state champion Maryville football team, the Red Rebel Marching Band had a fine season. Directed on the field by Drum Majorette Ruth Mary Weston, and featuring award-winning majorettes, headed by Leah Smith, the marching season was highlighted by an excellent performance at the TriState Marching Band Festival in Rossville, Georgia. Culminating the twelve weeks of concentrated study, the concert band, directed by Ed Bilbrey, impressed the judges with an exceptional performance of Kalinnikov’s “ Finale to Symphony No. 1 in G Minor” at the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Competi tive Festival in March.

Rebel F oo tb all This year’s football team proved to be, recordwise, the most successful in the school’s history. This 12-0-0 record gained the team the State AA crown. Such a successful season was the result of many hours of work by the players of whom eleven were named to the All-County team and two to the All-State team, and by the coaches, Don Story, Benny Monroe, and Head Coach Ted Wilson who was named East Tennessee “Coach of the Y ear.” During the season, the Rebels compiled 431 points while allowing their oppo nents only 127 in the twelve games. All the team members and coaches greatly deserve our ap preciation for the distinction they have brought the school. After much hard work at cheerleading camp at Tennessee Tech this summer, our girls proudly brought home five ribbons — four of them blue, illustrating their superior talent. The result was evident in the way this spirited squad led the way to many victories. By contributing their time and effort, the cheerleaders helped to send the football team to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and to initiate the Pep Club. Members of this year’s squad were. Captain Sandy Cannon, Co-Captain Gail Johnston, Mary Annis Parham, Seniors; Brenda Walker and Lisa Brinegar, Juniors; and Susan Cook and Libby Lambert, Sophomores.

R e b e l B a s k e t b a ll Sparked by the superior coaching of Bill Phillips and team determination, the Rebels engaged in many hard fought battles as shown by M aryville’s 55.55 point average per game to the opponent’s 56 point average. Scott Randall led the team with 535 points and 400 rebounds. He ranked fourth in the district scoring race. The captainship rotated between the three starting Seniors: Marty Nicely, Tony Humphrey, and Tom my Beaver. Other Senior players included Steve McDaniels, Joe Fox, and Gary Elrod. In post season play, the Rebels beat Greenback and M adisonville before being stopped by Friendsville in the District IV playoffs. A consolation match was lost to Everett before the Rebels advanced to the regionals to be defeated by the top-seeded Austin-East Roadrunners. A special fan section upheld the team headed by the Bleacher Bums. Head manager Mike Whitehead was assisted by Art Swann and Ken Rieger. Next year’s team will miss the outstand ing leadership of Coach Bill Phillips.

Coach Stephens — Martindale, Whitehead, Bowen, Ballew, Caldwell, Walters, Taylor, Kerr, Garner, McCorkle, Day, Criss, Reagan, Cate, Lovingood, Davis, Fields, Nelson

Despite many injuries and tough area op ponents, the Maryville High Rebelettes, coached by Mrs. Rolena Stephens, remained spirited throughout the season. Powered by captains Cindy Ballew, Carol McCorkle, top scorer Marcia Garner, and top rebounder Quinn Lovingood, the te nacious Rebelettes refused to give up. Upsetting highly ranked Walland late in the season, the team was billed as the most improved Blount County team.
