EDITOR’S LETTER on the last issue The Music Issue is my favorite so far. The style and format of Winter 2014 is MASCONSUMPTION finding its identity. Not only for myself, but also within the community. The zine of the Valley is coming full circle, as well as taking small steps forward. I loved working with photographer, Mike Reilly and with contributing writers Chalendrea Fields and Ashley Rutledge p 44. The Music Issue also kicked off our subscription offers. It is never too late to subscribe. This is a great opportunity to support ORNG Ink Studio and attract more readers. New sections like the MASCONSUMPTION quiz gives people more opportunities to get featured and to express themselves. on the music issue release party By now, it is known that the release of a zine is just important as the zine itself. And last Winter was no different. We produced the first Hip Hop showcase at Hat City Kitchen. Headlined by SYKEZ and ended with a surprise Soundbox Banditz reunion. Hot 97 and That’s Enuff’s DJ Shy rocked the after party and the lovely Marie David, of LadiSav hosted the show. It was an amazing night. I cannot thank the team and supporters enough p12. on female empowerment I am not a feminist. But I am a woman who will always support and stick up for gender equality. I feel a rise in the girl power movement and believe women are feeling empowered now more than ever. But at the same time there is a lot more that needs to be recognized and happen. I aim to explore this, by talking to fellow creative and professionals in the Valley Arts District. What empowers women in 2014? p24 on the women’s issue (contributors & stories) Another issue means different people to work with and collaborate with. There is a lot of art and photography in the zine from new artists to the Valley and MASCONSUMPTION. I met Marta p one night at Hat City Kitchen. She read a flyer in the women’s room about a search for contributors for this issue and coincidentally I was serving her. She asked me about it, and I think I was able to point her in the right direction. I look forward to working with her again. Briana Heart talks about the strength of females owning their sexuality in a poem. It was so much fun asking the community the following questions, “What should every woman know?” “What should every woman have?”. You’ll read some very interesting answers. on #cupcakesnchampagne brunch & fundraiser I was excited about doing another indiegogo campaign because I was able to work with Marco Dorce again for our first promotional video. It was something I wanted to do for a long time to get our message across to new readers and people interested in the neighborhood [Valley Arts District]. Our first Cupcakes & Champagne Brunch was the kick off event for the campaign. Which was a lot of fun. We collaborated with Pink Cupcakes, p12 , who recently opened a cupcake shop n the Valley. People enjoyed an all-you-can-eat brunch buffet, mimosas and live performance by Brittany Craig and SYKEZ. We ended up raising $490. Hope you enjoy SHE. And The Women’s Issue! on the future of masconsumption More readers. Wider Distribution. More subscribers. More events. Expanding the team. More visitors to the Valley. to the readers If you like what you’ve read and see please tell a friend. Connect to our social media and come out to the events happening here in the Valley p .23. There is so much going on, and you are going to want to be a part of what is happening here. Subscribe to the zine, support art and community.

IN THE LAST ISSUE: READERS’ FEEDBACK SEINDOLE MAWOLO, 25 West Orange, NJ @BSANDII Last night was a great night in the name of creativity and for the love of music. So so so proud of Peter K. Mawolo, Ray Sykez, Patricia Rogers and all of the other artists for all the work they put in and of course, the impact they made in placing a Masconsumption zine and the Valley Arts pin on the map of art and music in New Jersey. I can not wait to see more and hopefully be a part of it. JAMES PENDERGRASS West Orange, NJ It was dope the only problem is that a lot of it didn’t seem so focused on the music. No reviews if the actual music itself. I am a functioning human so I checked out some of the artists. I noticed that a lot of what was said in the articles especially the titular people didn’t match the things they spoke with the actual music. I couldn’t find Britney Craig and I really dug Politically Incorrect from the skyze guy. I thought the photo shoots were cool though. I really dug it overall tho really good read. Keep it up you have a fan for life here.

WINTER 2014 THE MUSIC ISSUE

SEE EVENT PHOTOS FROM RELEASE PARTY P12 DONETTE BELAZAIRE, 23 West Orange, NJ @DELIRIOUSMUSE The Music Issue featured some of our favorites and beautiful fresh faces. I am always amazed at the seamless integration of the zine with the current showcase. Newcomers, Detective Tuesday with Aramaic, Brittany Craig, Cienna Jade, and Seasoned “Consumers”, Sykez, Capital Ode, Mouse Sucks, and a very welcome and exhilarating surprise reunion by the Soundbox Banditz (Including Safe2Say and Johnny Delight), had the crowd practically salivating for more, with their fantastic array of sensuous voices, provocative (in thought ;)) lyricism, and amazing beat production. Dannie Swift’s acoustic set also had the crowd on their feet and ready to smash the patriarchy’s glass ceiling. It was a fantastic event, and the zine speaks for itself. Wonderful black and white designs, beautiful “Noise Makers” photography by the fantastic Mike Reilly. Really, I can’t imagine how the next event will top the previous one, but it always does, and the publication never disappoints!

I want IT by briana heart I want it .... As this flame ignites I can no longer hide it. When my eyes meet yours warmth overwhelms me.... My body tells me it’s wanting... It wants to explore yours to a point of no return ... But I’m sure after I’ll want some more... My mind plays out the scenario every time the bass of your voice blesses my senses ... My name always sounds like an echo when you say it. Come closer. So close that our flesh becomes one and our bones start to form a new being ... Touch me tender and roughly... Love me physically... Make my spirits heighten while no ones watching... Don’t let go. Make this a habit. Hell make it an addiction... Your pleasure is the mission at hand.. Use yours... Turn the seconds to hours and the hours into days.. Move me in every way with your body... Do what your thinking... No restraints... Be the wood to my fire... Warm me up.... The heat just went above 90 we’ve reached a peak... If only I didn’t just wake up from a really good dream... But what if I told you I want it....?

WELCOME TO THE WOMEN’S ISSUE “A

woman is full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.” -Diane Mariechild

There is no doubt that there has been a rise in the girl power movement. On the same note there is more progress to be made for gender equality. There is a conflicting nature in how females are portrayed and accepted in society in 2014. Women owning and feeling empowered by their sexuality are then called ‘sluts’. There are a lot more female executives like Sheryl Sanberg, CFO of Facebook, formerly Google. Then, at the same time on an episode of Undercover Boss, CEO of Great Wolfe Lodge, Kathy Schaefer says that sometimes when she is being interviewed there is a surprise statement made about how she is a female CEO. The issue was inspired by positive campaigns like Girl Boss, and “I am not bossy, I’m the boss.” But the theme was also inspired by more negative coverage. Fashion designer, L’Wren Scott who died earlier this year was only being referred to as “Mick Jagger’s longtime girlfriend” by the majority of media. Only fashion magazines and blogs acknowledged her for her decade long career in fashion. The day after Beyonce performed duet, Drunk in Love with husband, Jay-Z at the Grammy’s a London newspaper called her a “whore” on the front page. Reality television show producers allegedly pushes two cast mates (one is a mother to a young daughter) to make their sex tape public to boost ratings. This show is already known for excessive drama, sex, and overall debauchery. The creator and producer, is a woman. The show is a horrible image for young girls to look up to. The world is changing, and how gender relations are being viewed, and presented to us is multiplying and does not seem to be going in different directions. There is a lot out there, and many different images of females for girls and women to identify with and look up to. What empowers women in 2014? What should women want? What should women have? This issue talks to female designers, artists, musicians, models, writers who live and work in the Valley.

WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PIECES? I remember I bought a beanie at Forever 21 with a bird cage netting in the front. I went to her apar tment in New York City, she loved it so much she took it and wore it on the show. There is also a look where Kiyah is wearing a romper styled with an army fatigue jacket and when the episode aired, my friends called me, like I know you styled that!

WHERE WILL WE SEE YOU NEXT? The next season of Love in the City, and maybe ATL???? WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO SINCE PORTRAIT OF A LADY RUNWAY SHOW? Well...I am a wardrobe stylist and personal shopper for Emmy award winning celebrity hair stylist Kiyah Wright on OWN Network’s Love in the City. WOW! HOW WAS THE EXPERIENCE? It was challenging. I learned a lot when you really make it as a stylist, where I will be soon, it is much easier to pull good pieces. I love that Kiyah Wright gave me a chance. She could have worked with more experienced stylist, but she trusted my vision and loved my taste.

FLAWLUST STARRING

AMY GRACE One day las month, filmmaker and a good friend of mine, Marco Dorce texted me and said, “I have your cover.” Later he emailed me a series he did last year with jazz/funk singer, and actress/model Amy Gr ace . He told me how passionate Amy was about the meaning behind the shots. Once I opened the attachment and saw the beatuiful photogr aphs of Amy, strong, fear less, yet gr aceful. I agreed with Marco that he did indeed have the cover, and the series represented what the Women’s Issue was all about. I’ ve wor ked with Amy before on Marco’s shor t film 86 Char lie. She is talented, and professional. It was an honor to feature her on the cover. -P.R. P.R.: TALK ABOUT THE COVER SHOOT AMY: Ok, this series is called, “Flawlust.” People spend a lot of time hating and hiding their flaws like they’re not there. Many come to realize that once you accept, love and “wear your flaws on your sleeve” life begins to open up as you have. P.R.: I AGREE. I THINK PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY WOMEN TEND TO BECOME FIXATED ON THEIR FLAWS. I GREW TO LOVE SOME OF MY OWN. WHAT ARE SOME FLAWS YOU HAVE GROWN TO APPRECIATE? AMY: One thing I always saw as a flaw growing up is that I’m not incredibly social. I didn’t really talk much as a kid, and still have my silent moods from time to time. I remember always hating myself for this. I thought I was too weird or too awkward, and whenever someone mentioned how quiet I was I would get embar r assed. Like they noticed something I was tr ying to hide. I would always see that as a negative comment. Now I greatly appreciate my obser vant mind. I realize how hard it is for a lot of people to stop talking and take ever ything in, something I’ ve always been an exper t at. I see a bigger picture because I am analyzing ever ything I see most of the time. I catch things that a lot of people miss. It has also made me extremely empathetic because I can step into someone else’s wor ld without being wr apped up in my own. Now it’s something I love about myself and am glad I got to experience.

30 | MASCONSUMPTION.COM

P.R.: I asked every woman in this issue this question, How do you Feel about Gender Equality in 2014? AMY: I think gender equality is a lot fur ther behind than it is made out to be. When a woman accomplishes anything, it is brought into the light, being treated like big news. Society likes to pat itself on the back when such things happen. But this shouldn’t be at all. Even in these times, when a woman does something legitimate, it’s a sur prise. More attention is dr awn to the fact that the per son doing the job is a woman, than the actual job itself. In the music industr y, which is obviously ver y male dominated, it is occasionally brought to attention in conver sation that I am a female heading a band, like it’s a shock. I often feel I have to win fellow musicians and agents over. For whatever reason females have to prove they are real musicians. T hey’re not taken seriously at fir st until they prove themselves as people that should be taken seriously. I have heard similar things from women I know that wor k in other male dominated industries. If they give an opinion or have an idea on a matter that they voice, It’s heard but not really listened to. It’s treated as “Ok, you’ ve had your tur n to talk, now we’re actually going to figure out what to do.” My female friends have said that they’ ve had to repeat themselves and convince their colleagues that their idea is a legitimate one. What I feel like should be common knowledge in 2014 is that women are capable, not because they’re women but because they’re human and humans are capable. People need to stop saying things like female comedian, female cop, female congress member, female musician etc. The word “female” shouldn’t be par t of a woman’s job title, because at the end of the day a cop is a cop, and a female cop, is also a cop. CATFISH FRIDAY What is Catfish Friday? Catfish Friday is a Women’s Ar t Collective that is a program of ARTS ETC, a NJ nonprofit organization. See attached brochure. Explain how you got your name? The name came about when I thought of my mom and how she always cooked fish on Fridays and Catfish was a favorite in our family. I was raised Catholic and our family got in the habit of eating fish on Friday even when it wasn’t even Lent. So I just thought about a name and came up with Catfish Friday. The early meetings were held in my home in Newark and I would serve catfish at the meetings. How/why did it come to be? The group star ted in December of 2007 when I, Toni Thomas, a visual ar tist. How are you inspired by the emerging Valley Arts District? I located to the Valley because I liked being involved with something that was emerging. There is a lot of potential with projects like the Valley Ar ts district. I think it has been good for me to see how we’ve grown as an organization and how being a par t of Valley Ar ts has played a par t in that growth. What do you want to see more of? More ar tists and ar t happenings in the Valley. The happenings could be in any of the ar t areas like music, poetry, dance & of course the visual ar ts. How did you all meet? By word of mouth, from making contacts with other ar tists that would invited someone to the monthly meetings. Tell us about the exhibit at Hat City Kitchen? We were invited to exhibit at Hat city Kitchen by Gayle Mahoney,an ar tist and friend of Catfish Friday. The exhibit is like a showcase of what some of the ar tists in the collective are involved with in their personal studio practice.

Judy Blume, my Gramma Maggie, all the women in my family actually, Ida B Wells, Ella Baker, probably anyone ever called the most dangerous woman in America like Mother Jones or Jane Adams WHO ARE SOME BAD ROLE MODELS FOR YOUNG GIRLS? AND WHY? Even a good role model can turn bad if you aren’t spending time getting to know yourself. Young girls need time on their own to be with their imaginations and read books and play games and climb trees and make up stories.

How do you feel about Gender Equality in 2014? Gender Equality in 2014 leaves much to be desired. Women are still the targets of heinous and violent crimes and lack of education. Many American media outlets like to make it seem like we’ve come so far, but honestly gender equality has a long way to go in America. Who are Women you Look Up To? I look up to the women photographers Lori Grinker and Carie Mae Weems. Grinker’s work first caught m eye when I received a copy of her book, AFTERWAR that documents the physical and psychological wounds of frontline war veterans from World War I to the war in Iraq. The images are stunning and haunting. To know that as a photographer, veterans granted her access into their private homes and reveal their scars to her is awe-inspiring.So, how did I happen to find out about Carrie Mae Weems?

THECHEF LETITIA IS HEATIN’ UP HAT CITY KITCHEN!

HAT CITY KITCHEN IS KNOWN FOR MANY THINGS. THE FOOD AND THE PEOPLE I THINK ARE HIGH ON THAT LIST. IT IS PLEASURE TO WORK WITH MY CO-WORKERS AND SLOWLY LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR DREAMS AND THEIR PASSIONS. NEW TO THE STAFF, AND MORE SPECIFICALLY THE KITCHEN IS LETITIA MCCELNDON. I LIKED HER, ALMOST INSTANTLY BECAUSE OF HER SENSE OF HUMOR, CHARM, AND OF COURSE HER AMAZING COOKING. SHE IS THE ONLY FEMALE COOK IN THE KITCHEN AND IT MADE SENSE TO INCLUDE HER IN THE WOMEN’S ISSUE. I LEARNED THAT SHE HAS A PASSION FOR BAKING, AND MAKING DELICIOUS FOOD FOR PEOPLE TO LOVE AND ENJOY. I KNOW SO, BECAUSE SHE EVEN COMES OUT INTO THE DINIG ROOM TO WATCH CUSTOMERS ENJOY HER MEAL. I WAS ABLE TO ASK HER A COUPLE MORE QUESTIONS..

WHY DO YOU LIKE BEING A CHEF? I LOVE SEEING PEOPLE ENJOY SOMETHING I CREATED. IT GENUINELY MAKES ME HAPPY.

DO YOU FACE ANY CHALLENGES AS A FEMALE CHEF? IN THE KITCHEN? NO AS OF RIGHT NOW BUT I HAVE HEARD STORIES FROM OTHER FEMALES BUT I HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO BE AROUND MEN IN THE KITCHEN THAT SEE WOMEN AS EQUAL.

WHAT SHOULD EVERY WOMEN HAVE? PATIENCE.

WHAT SHOULD EVERY WOMEN KNOW? THEY CAN DO ANYTHING THEY PUT THEIR MINDS TO IN LIFE. DON’T LET ANYONE DISCOURAGE YOU FROM YOUR DREAMS OR YOUR PATH IN LIFE.

ANYTHING YOU LIKE MAKING IN PARTICULAR? MY TRIPLE DELIGHT CUPCAKES. IT’S A SIMPLE CHOCOLATE CUPCAKE BUT IT’S 3 FROSTINGS PIPED ONTO IT. NUTELLA CREAM CHEESE FROSTING, PEANUT BUTTER CREAM CHEESE FROSTING AND A SIMPLE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING.

‘I AM NOT A FEMINIST’

I

’m not a feminist. That statement is just as true as it is false. When I hear “feminist,” I think bra burnings, man bashing and hairy legs which is just not cute. But saying feminism is “not cute” makes me sound like any other condescending jerk who truly thinks womanhood should be centered around being “cute.” In all actuality, a feminist is someone who believes in the social, political, legal and economic rights for women to be equal to those of men. In that case, aside from sexists and people stuck in the 40s, aren’t we all feminists? “People” and “Society” have stigmatized feminism to the point where some women don’t even want to be labeled as feminists. Some women don’t want to be labeled as a person who wants women to be respected on the same level as their male counterparts. It’s a wild concept, really. But I want to take a moment to let women know that we are incredible. The word “incredible” doesn’t even embody enough greatness and awesomeness to accurately depict how amazing women are. It is unfathomable, it truly is. So the incessant “woe is me, this is a man’s world” pity party needs to stop so you can find the time to sip a colorful, fruity cocktail and think about how great it is to be a woman. he number of obstacles women encounter and effortlessly conquer is fascinating. Let me give you an example of a day in the life of a woman. She leaps up for work after realizing she hit snooze twice. She fell asleep without preserving her hair and, as we all know, cotton pillowcases and hair do not mix. She stumbles to the bathroom, plugs up her flat iron and proceeds to the toilet for that good ol’ morning pee when she finds out “Aunt Flo” came to visit a few days ahead of schedule. This wouldn’t be so bad if she was prepared with tampons and Midol but that was a pharmacy store run she thought she had enough time to make after work today. She finds three tampons in her purse and breathes a sigh of relief. First crisis averted. She grabs her comb to begin to press her hair for the day and finds that her flat iron no longer works. Great. She grabs a brush and some gel and puts her hair in a messy bun. Messy buns never fail, second crisis averted. Time to pick out clothes. She skipped laundry day so she has to choose from reject clothes...and reject underclothes. She ends up wearing her last clean bra, a Walmart bra that she bought on a whim one day when the bra strap on her good bra popped. It’s too small because Walmart never seems to have the right size and “the next size up or down” never fits right. Ever. She finds a thong in her otherwise empty panty drawer which means one thing, an all day wedgie. As if that isn’t bad enough, Aunt Flo is in town to make sure discomfort levels are at an all time high. She pulls together an outfit and heads out the door. She gets catcalled all the way to her car and barely makes it to work on time. Sitting at her desk, she deeply exhales and feels something poking her side boob. Damn underwire. She pulls the wire out of the bra and accepts that the she has to go throughout her day with her left breast inadequately protected. Great. Not to mention, she never stopped for that Midol in haste to make it to work and Aleve just won’t cut it. And working for a sexist, chauvinistic boss who makes creepy, googly eyes at her all day is just the icing on the cake but she takes it all in stride, PMS and all. hat may have sounded like a rough day but truth is, majority of women have lived that day to the tee within the past month. That hypothetical wasn’t even a bad day, it’s just a day in the life of a woman. Knowing that women go through things isn’t what makes me love being a woman. It’s how we handle going through these things with such grace. Women epitomize strength; mental, spiritual and emotional strength. f nothing I’ve said made you understand how great it is to be a woman, think about the undeniable perks we have. We live longer than men and we look better as we age, too. We can act ridiculous and tell our boyfriend it’s because of PMS. We can get out of a speeding ticket just for being pretty. Our clothes are cheaper, more varied, and cuter. We can fake it, you know what I mean by “it.” We don’t have to carry heavy things or kill bugs when we have a boyfriend. (To each her own but heavy things and bugs are not my cup o’ tea. I’ll sit that one out and play damsel in distress.) nd if I’ve still somehow failed to depict how wonderful women are and how wonderful it is to be one, I have a favor to ask of you. Think of every person you admire from the President to the Pope or Steve Jobs or even your best friend. All of those people were brought into this world because of a WOMAN. I know what you’re thinking and yes, Oprah too. Women are magnificent and you could bet your bottom dollar that on any given day, in the midst of any obstacle, I’m damned proud to be a woman.

HER MUSICAL JOURNEY BREAKFAST WITH ASHLEY BY MOLLY ROSE KAUFMAN Three good reasons to have breakfast with Ashley Rutledge are her encyclopedic knowledge of the local music scene, her advice about oatmeal toppings and her stories about making your way in a tough industry. This March, Ashley and I met up the Beechwood Cafe and we got to talking over many coffee refills. Ashley is responsible for the dynamic live music program at Hat City Kitchen. It’s a gig the 27-year-old described as, “the dream job I never knew I wanted.” “Hat City Kitchen,” she said, “is about building a community and contributing to a solid place where people can relax, enjoy and feel safe. It’s about love not just money.” Ashley first connected with music when she started dancing ballet as a toddler. In middle school she chose voice lessons over summer camp. In her late teens and early twenties she pursued an acting career and appeared in commercials, as extra in films and did some voiceovers but music slowly took over. At NYU she majored in history and anthropology but said her musical education came from going to shows almost every night everywhere from tiny bars to major venues. Most of her friends were musicians and she started writing songs and recording herself over beats she made. For a brief spell after college she hosted an open mic night in South Orange and then started waitressing at Hat City Kitchen. Within her first few weeks at HCK the person in charge of booking bands quit and Ashley’s manager asked her to step in. It was supposed to be temporary but the rest is Valley musical history. Ashley grew the musical offerings from mostly rock to a diverse program reflective of her own expansive musical taste. She listens to everything from electronic to R&B to pop and lists amongst her favorite famous artists Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Daft Punk and Janelle Monae. Monae is a personal role model of hers for achieving success on her own terms. While she says she usually feels respected at work she can tell when an older, male musician doubts her because she is a young woman. “Women in the music industry that are successful are fearless. They either have a lot of confidence or they fake it. It’s a balance,” she told me, “between being assertive but not a bitch and being confident but humble.” What up and coming bands would she like to book? Brick + Mortar based in Asbury Park and Money For Rope from Australia. What does she love in a band? “It’s the combination of commitment, passion and talent. You can tell a band that practices a lot. I like it when bands are able to express their passion. It’s a feeling. You can see it in their faces. You get goosebumps.”

continued from p 30 Amy Grace, FLAWLUST P.R.: WHY THE BLUE PAINT? AMY: The reason the paint is blue is because it represents “the blues” or sadness, which is what one can get when seeing their flaws in a negative way. In the photo it’s going down my arms, or being worn on my sleeve, without self-judgment. I’m opening myself up to the world. P.R.: WELL IT IS TRULY AN HONOR TO HAVE YOU ON THE COVER OF THE WOMEN’S ISSUE. MARCO SAID IT TOOK YOU A COUPLE OF DAYS TO GET ALL THE BLUE PAINT OFF. THAT’S DEDICATION. AMY: Now that I think about it, it’s pretty appropriate for the Women’s Issue because women have way too much pressure to be flawless and many end up getting tricked into hating themselves for not being perfect.
