The Pink Lady
Artwork: Vladimir Jean (Can be seen at ORNG Ink Emerging Artist Studio)
I thought of venturing to places remote with my pink melanin'd Heroine hair blue ocean soaked she kept a feather in Tethering yes she had a hold for I had fell within Upendi one eye of use when I had met her then Pupil getting tutored by new mistress of elements Mastery so casually demonstrated with elegance Imprinted on this figment universe centering Who kept a shield in arm to protect the heart when I let her in I planned to bring her honor on the word of her ward She painted us a future full of love and allure We warred against the world I her bow and she my sword To fill out vaults with riches others couldn't afford But this was all just a temporary dream And act of Izanagi by my dear Uchihan queen It seemed that from the start she ensnared me in her art But I plead for her to hold it so my world won't fall apart
- Tommy Chong --The Now (Dannie Swift x Infinite x Sykez x 6th Element) This painting represented the rush of artistic aura that had hit me when I first entered [ORNG Ink]. I tend to look for inspiration to write in different venues, and to me there was just way too many artistic faucets here to lose inspiration. It was like an oasis of art and the painting just seemed to be the embodiment of the aura I felt at ORNG Ink. -Tommy Chong

Letter From the Editor Dear Readers, I have always felt the compulsive need to express myself. For as along as I can remember I loved writing stories. I'd make any one that came to my house listen to my adventures. I yearn for the opportunity to experience new things and meet new people to later write about. Now the world, or at least the Valley, can be inspired by what inspires me; this neighborhood. mas(music, art, style)Consumption ZINE captures the extraordinary happenings here in the Valley of Orange, New Jersey. I have the unique opportunity of living, creating, and working in this growing arts district. I am a part of what I think is the beginning of an era. The right people are here, at the right time and I can't wait to be a part of history. This zine is where you can find all of the dynamic talent that live, create, and perform here in the Valley.
Confetti storms, finding the perfect shot, fancy fairy tales, Kosmic Daydream, and so much more in the Winter 2013 issue. The best part of producing this zine has been all the fun I had collaborating with my creative team at ORNG Ink Emerging Artist Studio and other partners here in the Valley Arts District. masConsumption is my baby, but I am nothing without my team. I am very proud of the first issue because it has forced me to ask myself many questions, as an artist. Questions I think every artist has had to ask themselves when they need to know that its all worth it. One being: What does it even mean to be an artist in 2013? I don't know what the right answer is, but I do know that it is worth it. I look forward to the future of masConsumption, and watching the Valley Arts District continue to grow organically. This zine is for all the artists, writers, creators, entrepreneurs, supporters and dreamers here in the Valley and everywhere. Enjoy! -PR

Where's Hip-Hop Going? According to Sykez
I've spent nights frustrated at what Hip Hop's become: selfish boasts of money, God-complexes, bravado at pitching drugs, murder, cannablism, and even devil worshipping. Yeah, it's getting real. Decent mainstream hip hop died when 2pac did because there's never been a real balance between conscious and street since.
Hip Hop is progressing. It still needs work, but is going in the right direction. Hip Hop now has mass appeal, and there's something for everyone. With artists like Blu, Lupe Fiasco & Kendrick Lamar, the genre is far from dead. The last step to furthering hip hop is bringing back realism and fun.
I named my current project, 'Politcally Incorrect' because I've noticed, when speaking about hip hop, you have to like what's popular and on the radio. In other words, be politically correct. As an artist, I feel that takes away from the integrity of what emcees do as modern day poets. I mean my story is different from yours, so why make us all tell the same stories? There is a lot of good hip hop out there that doesn't talk about women, sex, drugs, and partying. 'Politically Incorrect' is my story and I don't apologize for it. Good music, is good music. Sykez is an artist from Orange, New Jersey. He is also a member of hip hop collective, Soundbox Banditz. Only 20 years old, he has 13 mixtapes, serves as the go to sound engineer for all underground artists in the Valley and headlined his group's showcase at ORNG Ink last month.
Sykez also found time to record his own project 'Politically Incorrect'. If you haven't already heard it, please download. This emcee is pure talent.

KOSMIC DAYDREAM!
Fun Q&A with the NeoPsychedelic Experience.
Who is Kosmic Daydream?
The Kosmic Goddess - Lead Vocalists Adam Daydream - Lead Bass Jimmi Dylan - Lead Guitar Jose Cruz - Lead Drums
I fell in love with Kosmic Daydream while they were performing at Hat City Kitchen. I'm sure you will too. Check out their website www.kosmicdaydream.com and like their page on Facebook for more information and performance schedule.
What Do You Bring to Kosmic Daydream?
Jimmi: Good hair & cool guitars Kosmic Goddess: I bring back the same vibe that Janis Joplin had possessed. You really don't see that anymore and I think it's quite refreshing to see that kind of energy on stage again. Adam: Raw intelligence, dashing good looks, irresistible, charm and some of the tastiest bass lines on this side of the mighty Hackensack. Oh, a strong sense of modesty.
Where do you see Kosmic Daydream in 5 years? KG: We are going to take over the world! Who are some of your inspirations and why?
Adam: John Paul Jones and John Entwistle are probably my two main influences as far as my approach to my instrument, but I'm most inspired by the other members of the band. The moments that we are lockstep and in sync really push me to another level of playing.
What are the top 5 songs on your iPod? Jose: 1. Pearl Jam-Force of Nature 2. Soundgarden - Been to Long 3. Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - She's So Scandalous 4.Bad Religion - I Want to Conquer the World, 5. Public Enemy - Burn Hollywood Burn

Hey, Artist!
Here are
Ways to Promote Yourself:
1. Create a free online portfolio and join the creative network of Behance.net or similar artist online community. 2. Use your creativity to make small samples of your work- with your contact info. More effective than the traditional business card.
3. Think of yourself as a personal brand. Use all your assets- social media, community connections, word of mouth to spread the word about how YOU are special and unique!
4. Stage your own shows in creative spaces and invite everyone you know. Better yet- get a group together and do a show together. Share your contact lists. 5. Learn how to write a press release, or hire someone to do it for you. Don't buy ads, get the attention of arts reporters so they write about you.
Gayle Mahoney is a New Jersey artist who works in a variety of media from graphic design to sculpture. She is currently a project manager for Front of House Services/ValleyArts Inc., planning programs for artists and offering communications support in order to build the arts district. While she was in college she was a designer for the first-ever magazine about snowboarding, one of the earliest magazines created on the Mac.

'A New Place to Create' With Patrick Morrissy
Pat Morrissy taught me that it all starts with a vision. For over 25 years his nonprofit organization, HANDS, Inc. has made a mission of revitalizing the city of Orange and neighboring West Orange, NJ. More recently, HANDS, Inc. along with ValleyArts Inc. have been building a new place for artists to create, the Valley Arts District. The neighborhood already contains a growing network of artists, a restaurant that also serves a live music venue, Hat City Kitchen, ORNG Ink Emerging Artist Studio, Luna Stage Theatre Company, various artist live-work spaces including the renovation of an old Firehouse, Arts Unbound center for disabled artists, and 4 galleries.
Why an Arts District? I discovered along the way how much the arts contribute to what people call vibrancy-that's a combination of people, energy, aesthetics, community interaction, fun and passion, and lots more that I can not articulate
Where does ORNG Ink & emerging talent fit in the growth of the Valley Arts District? Young talent and energy are essential to my vision. It's our future and people like Patricia Rogers and Mike Malbrough have an exciting view of that future.
Talk about the much anticipated Firehouse Lofts...
The firehouse is one of the best examples to dateline what the people that work at HANDS are about; historic restoration of a building that had been vacant for years; we created cool, well designed lofts; artists live there; there is a cooperative gallery managed by ValleyArts; common space for the tenants. This project touches on a lot of the elements that HANDS staff are passionate about.
How do you respond to comparisons to other artsy neighborhoods in NYC? HANDS commitment to creating 100 permanently affordable arts spaces certainly distinguishes the Valley Arts District from SoHo & DUMBO which have their lost connection to artists. The Valley is about being a part of making Orange: The urban village of the 21st century- a just & beautiful city. A friend of mine says who moved to SoHo now lives in SoHoland. It's a tourist attraction.
MUSIC. FOOD. DRINK. How has Hat City Kitchen been the anchor of the district? It's in a critical location on the Valley's "Main Street". It was a dump and boarded up for a couple of years. It's beautifully renovated and it's popular. It's become the home for musicians and one of those precious "third places" where people gather. Food and beverage are essential to community. It's the symbol Orange is the cool place where people like to be.
Where do you see the Arts District in 5 years? I imagine the valley filled in with more of what you see now. Many more buildings renovated for housing & arts uses. A couple more restaurants, maybe music venues, a lot more people like Patricia Rogers, another Ironworks (youth arts center) or two, more public art, bigger events like the VAMP Festival.

what does it mean to be an artist in 2013?
Donette, writer: Being a passionate artist in 2013 means being the one who will end all to be all. Being able to get up each morning and say, "Today, I will do better than my best. I will give more than my all." To have that determination, that drive, that sheer lust for success through true artistic freedom.
Shelly G., model/stylist: Being an artist in 2013 I personally think, is not just about creativity but knowledge, knowledge in not only in your type of style but also in others. Expand in different genres, whether you’re an artist, musician, poet, writer, dancer, photographer etc. In the long run knowing a bit of knowledge of each will definitely help your sense of creativity.
Marco, photographer: I don't know this answer will come at the end of the year. And depends on the artist, what they do and who they are. I'm not sure.
Johnny Delight, music artist: Anybody can be an artist but in 2013 it's about being "That Artist". The one that pushes past all views and limits. The one that goes above and beyond. 2013 will be a difficult year for many artists. The world isn't as accepting to all kinds of music today and if you don't conform to what the masses like, you will be shunned and tossed aside.
Anonymous: To be an artist in 2013 means that you have to throw away perceived success and look inside yourself and ask yourself would you do it (your art form) even if you didn't gain fame from it. It means looking at the culture we have now. Where money is placed at a higher value and sex is corrupting the mind, of many and asking yourself are you willing to be different?

Shani is wearing a Robyn Modest dress (top), vintage Ralph Lauren (bottom)
This is one of my favorite shoots. It was spontaneous and full of life. Shani, Marco & I were able to get creative with the many artistic backdrops in the Valley like the school bus depot. -PR

The Cover
I assume there is a lot of pressure when shooting for the cover shot. Especially when it's the first issue.. But always fun with MultiArtistry Ent. I also loved how we mixed vintage pieces, clothing from deep inside our sample closet and model's clothes. I wanted the pictures to be fun and creative. Oh, and did I mention the confetti storm and endless champagne? -PR

Blind Love Letters Chapter One: Emcee
Constantly tripping, slipping, dripping, tumbling. Fumbling for the words, this feeling is humbling. Asking for peace of mind; in you a Conscious threat I find. While your lyricism has me tripping; Losing breath at your precision, Your iridescence leaves me raw, has you catching me slipping. While your lips are moving to your soul beat, my core is dripping to your tongue's feats. Your language-love, your mastery of language; love... It's dangerous. You're captivating my appetite, voracious. Our mutual love of words, and your obvious appreciation for my curves, Has me tumbling, picture of what I think our bodies deserve. But I'm not that bold or even that quick, I just fantasize until it makes me lust-sick. But, I wouldn't know what to do if you fell the same way.

Molly's Favorite Things in the Valley "When I was a kid it was always hard for me to pick favorites. I thought somehow choosing just one Michael Jackson song or stuffed animal would hurt the feelings of all of the others. I also usually had trouble doing what I was assigned to do. So rather than make a list of my favorite things in the Valley (as I was assigned) here are a few things I really, really like a lot in the Valley. But please keep in mind that I like many other things, too.
My Mom's House Maybe because it was just the holidays and the woman baked about a thousand cookies and I spent 48 hours in my pajamas watching movies about Santa Claus but I love my mom's house.
Mazzi Dogz The iced coffees are legend (just don’t have four in one night). And everyone knows I love a Holy Guacamole. But the best part? Advice from Vinny, the coolest, wisest dude on Valley Street.
The Malbroughs Have you seen this family?
Freddy Krueger and the Robot In my mind Freddy Krueger and the Robot are best friends and it is their job to watch over the earth oven and all of us.
Rahway River entrance on Freeman Street in between Tompkins and South Jefferson This one summer night we all snuck through the fence and walked down the riverbank so far until it looked like we were in a rain forest. Danny Gordon found a robot and Gamal wrote a song about it. It was a good time and sometimes when I walk by there that memory pops into my head.
The Mirror in the Women’s Bathroom at Hat City Kitchen It is the Mirror of the Erised. You see in it what you didn’t even know you wanted to see."

Title: Archangelic
I was driving past a golf course close to home on a really foggy afternoon and noticed how otherworldly it seemed. Everything was coated in a grey haze and the trees looked like cracks in a wall. I knew if I didn't take advantage of this moment I would lose it forever. I captured a moment in a place I passed everyday but when I photographed it I felt like I was seeing it for the very first time. That's what I find so beautiful about photography... every space that you see through the lens is reimagined.
