Oviedo, capital del Principado de Asturias, es una bella ciudad cosmopolita llena de encantos y belleza aunque principalmente su gente, amable y abierta, destaca entre todo lo que la ciudad ofrece. Con un clima oceánico donde predominan los suaves veranos y frescos inviernos, Oviedo aún mantiene la esencia de aquellos que emigraron a América en tiempos pasados celebrando incluso, durante su fiesta más importante en honor a San Mateo, el Día de América mediante un colorido y

multitudinario desfile de carrozas representando a la mayoría de países americanos y caribeños, mientras que los conciertos y otras actividades se desarrollan durante las noches de estas fiestas que duran una semana aproximadamente. Obviamente, la salsa siempre está presente en dichas actividades lo que ha originado el seguimiento masivo del género y baile por parte de los habitantes de la ciudad y alrededores.

Siendo Oviedo una ciudad donde la salsa y otros géneros latinos son seguidos por miles de personas, resulta natural la organización y puesta en escena de un evento como el Oviedo Salsa Congress preparado a conciencia para ofrecer, durante el fin de semana del 4 al 6 de diciembre 2015 en el majestuoso Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos Ciudad de Oviedo, talleres de baile con afamados instructores, shows, y por supuesto no va a faltar la salsa en vivo, como todo congreso que se precie de importante y verdaderamente internacional, a cargo de la extraordinaria Orquesta Sonoridad dirigida por Sergio El Bembee y compuesta principalmente por músicos profesionales gallegos que muy probablemente lleven en sus respectivos ADNs el sabor e identidad de los salseros de raza, como usualmente decimos Salseros de la Mata, porque el tumbao y el swing que desprenden en sus actuaciones no tiene nada que envidiar a otros. ¡Salsa de la buena, de calidad, salsa para todos!

La organización está a cargo de la asturiana Asociación Cultural Cuestión de Baile y estarán presentes instructores y bailarines reconocidos como Fausto e Isabel de USA, el Grupo Alafia de Italia, Dimitris & Stella de Grecia, Nuno & Nagyla de Portugal así como Sabor y Bembé de Madrid, Euphoria Dance Project de Vigo y, sin descuidar a los artistas locales, los asturianos Métele Pasión Jr, por mencionar solo algunos. DJs como la venezolana Evelyn La Negra (afincada en Barcelona), Julio Son de León o el asturiano DJ Kike calentarán la pista de baile poniendo a todos los bailadores al máximo ya que, según palabras de los organizadores, este evento está hecho solo y exclusivamente para ellos, para el disfrute de todos los asistentes.

Como colofón al evento se celebrará la Spain Salsa Cup, Campeonato Profesional de Salsa para Parejas, con muy importantes premios en metálico para los tres primeros clasificados. Como verán, hablamos de un evento completo, muy completo, organizado con mimo y profesionalidad.

Sin desprenderse de sus raíces y del recuerdo de los Indianos de Asturias que hicieron Las Américas a finales del siglo XIX, el Oviedo Salsa Congress mantiene vivo ese espíritu y conexión con la salsa y el Caribe, con la ricura del ritmo que tantos disfrutan y bailan por lo que hay que estar allí, en este evento hecho con calidad, para bailadores y público en general, quienes durante tres días sentirán la pasión y la alegría de la salsa.

For many years now, Super Mario has been a household name on the international Salsa scene, recognized and respected by students and fellow professionals for his amazing lead, unlimited database of fantastic moves/combinations and his teaching ability. His classes and workshops have always been extremely popular both in the UK and in countries as far as Australia, Japan and the USA, specializing on technique but always maintaining an element of fun.

SUPER MARIO: The IT dancer of salsa in London

Mario was born in India but moved to the UK as a teenager. He settled in London, where he continued his education, taking a degree in mathematics and also qualifying as an accountant. In 1998, a friend took him to a salsa club where the teacher immediately saw his potential. Mario was hooked straight away and has never looked back since. Still based in London and travelling to teach nearly every weekend of the year, Mario specializes in cross body style, dancing on the 1 or the 2 and focusing mainly on moves and combinations, with special emphasis on leading techniques.

Despite no previous dancing or teaching background, he was able to observe the unnecessary power used to lead turn patterns, and began focusing on breaking down routines to understand the techniques and signals that are essential to good leading. His natural talent for both producing and executing so many imaginative moves led to an invitation to teach at the first congress that he ever attended. His big break came soon after, when asked to give workshops at the biggest salsa congress in the world in Toronto, Canada.

Mario has earned himself the title Million Moves Man through his ability to create any number of unique combinations that are lead with expertise and are always comfortable to follow. His dancing style is smooth but fast, giving him and his dance partner extra freedom to improvise. His amazing presence on the dance floor sets him apart as a social dancer and his outgoing, energetic personality has also been instrumental in getting him known in the Salsa World.

La torre Eiffel (tour Eiffel, en francés), inicialmente nombrada torre de 300 metros (tour de 300 mètres), es una estructura de hierro pudelado diseñada por Maurice Koechlin y Émile Nouguier y construida por el ingeniero francés Gustave Eiffel y sus colaboradores para la Exposición universal de 1889 en París.

Situada en el extremo del Campo de Marte a la orilla del río Sena, este monumento parisino, símbolo de Francia y su capital, es la estructura más alta de la ciudad y el monumento que cobra entrada más visitado del mundo, con 7,1 millones de turistas cada año. Con una altura de 300 m, prolongada más tarde con una antena a 324 m, la torre Eiffel fue la estructura más elevada del mundo durante 41 años.

Fue construida en dos años, dos meses y cinco días, y en su momento generó cierta controversia entre los artistas de la época, que la veían como un monstruo de hierro.

Inicialmente utilizada para pruebas del ejército con antenas de comunicación, hoy sirve, además de atractivo turístico, como emisora de programas radiofónicos y televisivos.

Los Satélites es una banda venezolana de salsa y música caribeña. Fue fundada en 1966 por José Rafael Mendoza (Cheche Mendoza) durante el boom de fusión de ritmos caribeños y de jazz que eventualmente se convirtió en lo que se conoce como Salsa.

Aunque ignorados en Venezuela, Los Satélites tuvieron gran éxito en el exterior, siendo la primera banda venezolana en presentarse en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York. Los discos de la banda durante los años 1970 se consideran entre los mejores de la música hecha en Venezuela, y debido al talento que salió de sus filas, una de las bandas de salsa más influyentes del Caribe.

¿Cual es su historia?

Tras realizar conciertos en Maracaibo, y más tarde en el resto del país, Los Satélites se radican en Caracas y firman con el sello discográfico Discomoda.

En 1971 editan su primer álbum, Siempre en órbita, el cual produjo el sencillo Pensando en ti, el cual se mantiene como número uno en República Dominicana por tres meses. El tema fue compuesto por José Laso (alias Cheo Palmar) e interpretado por Mauricio Conde. Es bastante curioso que inicialmente, el álbum no fue distribuido en Venezuela por falta de apoyo promocional.

Debido al éxito de la banda, el sello neoyorquino Fania le ofrece un contrato a Los Satélites, pero tienen que rechazarlo debido a las obligaciones contractuales de Discomoda. En 1972 su segundo álbum, Erupción, produjo el sencillo Traicionera interpretado por Orlando Castillo. La canción se ubica entre las más populares del año en las radios hispanas de Nueva York, y ayuda a que sean invitados a tocar en el Madison Square Garden junto a la Fania All Stars, La Sonora Matancera, Celia Cruz, Pellín Rodríguez, Johnny Ventura y Charlie Palmieri.

Posteriormente, la banda se presentó en Chicago, EE.UU., y regresó a Venezuela.

Durante los siguientes años la banda grabó una docena más de larga duración y se dedicaron a realizar giras internacionales antes de su último LP en 1981.

Entre los miembros más reconocidos de la banda se encuentran Orlando “Watussi” Castillo, Rodrigo Mendoza, Hildemaro Ugas y Nal Belmonte.

Debido a conflictos con una banda del mismo nombre, Los Satélites editaron sus discos en Colombia como Cheche Mendoza y su Conjunto.

El año pasado “Cheche” Mendoza le pasó el mando de Los Satélites a su hijo Andy, quien desea mantener a la orquesta en la cima.

En el mes de Octubre, esta banda celebrará sus 49 años, en la ciudad de Maracaibo, Edo Zulia - Venezuela, un concierto para bailar y disfrutar del sabor de la salsa Venezolana.

La banda está compuesta por 15 músicos en escena que hacen sonar la trompeta,saxofón, trombón y órgano de una manera que pone a bailar hasta al más tímido. La orquesta sigue sonando con fuerza en países como República Dominicana, Colombia y Ecuador, teniendo un lugar importante en las carteleras internacionales.

Altos de Chavón es una villa de tipo mediterráneo antiguo construida en una altura sobre el río Chavón, en la República Dominicana. Es sede de un Centro Cultural, el Museo Arqueológico nacional, y la llamada Ciudad de los Artistas. Cuenta también con un Anfiteatro, el cual fué diseñado por el artista italiano, Roberto Copa en 1976 e inaugurado en 1982 con el concierto “Concert for the Americas” (Concierto para las Américas) con Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Heart y Carlos Santana, el 20 de agosto de ese año.

Este género musical latino tiene sus orígenes en la República Dominicana. Actualmente es uno de los ritmos más escuchados y bailados en muchos países de todo el mundo. La bachata ha llegado a varios países y personas contagiando sus pegajosas letras y sus ritmos, considerados hoy en día cómo uno de los más sensuales. Así que pasamos a ver, lo más destacado de la Historia y Origen de la Bachata.

En República Dominicana en los inicios del siglo 20 la palabra bachata era significado de una reunión o fiesta en la cual se tocaba música popular y géneros bailables. También se designaba así a pequeñas reuniones de gente para divertirse, estas reuniones se podían dar en esquinas de barrios, patios o cualquier otro lugar, pero para ser considerado bachata, tenía que ir acompañado de algún género musical popular, en otras palabras, bachata era sinónimo de fiesta, parranda, juerga, etc.

Los comienzos de la bachata fueron por el año cincuenta, aunque su aparición fue de forma sorpresiva y anónima, se calcula su inicio cuando los famosos boleros y pasillos de Latinoamérica alcanzaron la República Dominicana, donde tuvieron gran éxito y a partir de aquí surge la bachata, una combinación de estos ritmos con algunos detalles de merengue y blues.

En esta década se sustituyeron algunos instrumentos de aquellos ritmos que influyeron en la creación de la bachata, por ejemplo, se adiciona un instrumento llamado guira en lugar de las clásicas maracas del bolero y se sumaron varias guitarras, por lo que en sus principios algunos llamaban al ritmo como “bolero de guitarra”.

En las décadas siguientes, la bachata se fue desarrollando en pequeños bares de Santo Domingo ya que era considerada música de clase baja, género ligado a la gente humilde y de barrios donde la pobreza era muy visible, pero con él tiempo comenzó a agradar a personas de todas las clases sociales, convirtiéndose hoy en lo que conocemos.

Esta música que actualmente se caracteriza por sus románticas letras y su ritmo que para la mayoría resulta ideal para bailar, en sus inicios destacaba cómo “música de amargue” basados en la melancolía que dejaban algunas de las letras más tristes, y que para muchos migrantes que 88

dejaban sus pueblos para radicarse en la ciudad, eran las letras favoritas.

Historia y Origen de la Bachata, Primeros cantantes de bachata En los inicios del género bachatero es muy visible lo ligado que estaba al bolero y los pasillos, para ello sólo hay que escuchar los temas de los primeros intérpretes de bachata, entre ellos, borracho de amor, luna, serpiente humana y otros temas de José Manuel Calderón, uno de los artistas más populares de aquellos tiempos, también considerado por muchos seguidores, el padre de este género musical.

Se unen a la lista de pioneros de la bachata, artistas cómo: Rafael Encarnación, Bernardo Ortíz y uno de sus temas, Dos Rosas, Inocencio Cruz con uno de sus temas, Amorcito de mi Alma, Tomy Figueroa y uno e sus temas, mi pensamiento, Leonardo Paniagua y uno de sus temas amada amante, y por supuesto el gran Luis Segura, el añoñaito, aquí uno de sus temas; que me castigue dios, este artista por su extensa carrera y la cantidad de canciones que aportó al género, es uno de los artistas más destacados de aquellos tiempos.

El gran salto de la bachata surgió en la década de los años 80, cuando el ritmo pudo llegar a los medios de comunicación y ser escuchada por personas de todas las clases sociales. A partir de allí su éxito fué aumentando sin parar.

La primera canción que produjo este cambio fue “Pena” de Luis Segura, con la cual él mismo autor tuvo un increíble salto a la fama.

DESIREE GODSELL: Artista por definición

En un más que superficial mundo, donde la profundidad en grandes ocasiones carece de valor o simplemente no es víctima de la paciencia de tratar de entenderla en sí, el arte, en su acepción más elevada y pura, no siempre está reflejado en el espejo del éxito. La historia es el fiel testigo de ello, Vincent Van Gogh no fue un caso aislado, Alan Poe, Cervantes, Stieg Larsson, así como un largo etcétera vivieron una humilde y en ocasiones penosa vida sin llegar a atisbar el fulminante éxito póstumo que sus obras tomaron.

Es así el artista, el colaborador fiel de continuar en el tiempo la capacidad que diferencia al ser humano del resto de animales, la creatividad sin un fin útil, sin una practicidad inherente al resultado final, el artista es quién posee la extraña capacidad de mostrar su esen100

cia, su visión de aquello que le rodea, sus sentimientos y peculiares pensamientos obteniendo como resultado una sensación, una reflexión, el afloramiento de nuevas emociones nunca antes notadas, una risa, una lágrima en un receptor que no siempre está en la misma fase temporal o emocional que el emisor, que el artista, situación que corresponde con los ejemplos mencionados de incomprensión y de éxito no reconocido en vida.

Desiree Godsell requiere del citado preámbulo para ser comprendida como artista en sí, como fenómeno de la naturaleza cuya visión no posee un fin material, simplemente desea mostrar su ser, sus emociones, sus vivencias, su momento, su fin es expresar de una forma sincera distanciándose de modas y corrientes, Desiree es ARTISTA por encima de todo.

Bailarina desde siempre, Desiree nos cuenta: -“De acuerdo a lo que dice mi madre, yo siempre he sido una bailarina (mover and shaker)”. “Entreteniendo a mi madre y a sus amigos desde que casi apenas andaba”.

Así su madre visionaria pronto supo reconocer el talento de su inquieta y pequeña Desiree introduciéndola en escuelas de baile desde los 6 años, a pesar de las dificultades de ser madre soltera ingeniándoselas siempre para impulsar y hacer realidad el sueño de sus hijos, siendo para Desiree un ejemplo como persona, su motor, su apoyo…

-“Ella encontró el modo para que sus hijos hicieran todo lo que ellos amaban o lo que les ayudaría a ser mejores personas”. “Mi madre es una de las personas más desinteresada, más amorosa, compasiva y apasionada que yo conozco”.

Respondiendo a la pregunta si su madre es un ídolo para ella: -“Por supuesto que lo es”. “Ella nos tenía en todo, montando a caballo, scouts, voluntarias, en campamentos cada verano, programa de estudios en el extranjero, baile, teatro… TODO!”.

Con una feliz infancia en Houston, Texas, gracias al amor y apoyo de su querida madre, Desiree tuvo su primer acercamiento a la música latina (obviando la música Tejana/Mexicana) gracias al primer concierto al que asistió en su vida acompañada como siempre de su madre: Gloria Estefan con Miami Sound Machine, reconociendo que “Me encantaron”.

En su casa se escuchaba un poco de todo, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson… Todo lo que la pequeña Desiree bailaba practicando lo que en las clases de baile aprendía: -“Yo aprendía ballet, claqué (tap) y jazz. Odiaba el ballet”.

“Si yo quería aprender jazz y tap, tenía que tomar Ballet”.

“Definitivamente no era algo (ballet) natural en mí. Comencé a apreciarlo cuando crecí”. Reconociendo que es una herramienta fundamental para cualquier bailarín de cualquier disciplina.

La talentosa bailarina sorprende en su respuesta al preguntarle cuando decidió ser bailarina: -“Yo en realidad siempre he deseado ser entretenedora (entertainer)”.

Estudió en el High School of Performing and Visual Arts en Texas, donde estudió más técnica, enfocándose más en ella que en actuar. Sin embargo la interpretación también formó y forma parte de su arte: 102

-“No estudié interpretación, pero participé en muchas obras y producciones. Me enfoqué en baile durante el school y en interpretar tras el school. Hice gran cantidad de obras musicales de teatro durante la escuela elemental y el middle school”.

Desiree dejó su Houston natal a la edad de 18 años para dirigirse a continuar sus estudios en el College de Philadelphia, pasando previamente un verano en la prestigiosa Alvin Ailey School en New York City estudiando danza contemporánea y otros tipos de baile.

Preparándose toda su vida para ser profesional en la danza y tras terminar el college en Philadelphia, pronto tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar para la afamada disquera Atlantic Records, elección de artistas de la talla de Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles o The Rolling Stones.

-“ Una de mis mejores amigas contactó conmigo para un concierto que ella estaba haciendo y necesitaba otra bailarina. Pasé una audición y en dos semanas estaba de gira con Sant. Esto fue antes de salir su primer álbum. Por aquel entonces era Santogold (actualmente Santigold)”.

Con Santigold trabajó como coreógrafa y bailarina, participando en giras donde era telonera de artistas como Riahnna, Mia, Coldplay o Jay-Z, valorando la experiencia profesional vivida pero exaltando la importancia de conocer y trabajar con Santigold: -“Santi es una artista muy particular… Una verdadera artista con una sorprendente visión. Ella es original y es increíble trabajar con ella. Para ser honesta, he sido más influenciada por ella que por cualquier otro artista”.

Y es probablemente Santigold con su peculiar forma de trabajar, su concepto de artista, el punto de inflexión para desarrollar definitivamente a Desiree como verdadera artista, para guiarla en el mismo sentido en el cual observó a su “mentora” Santigold trabajar, con el consiguiente valor de Desiree portadora de la sensibilidad artística suficiente para descubrir el grandísimo valor de Santigold entre cantantes de grandísima fama como pueda ser Riahnna. Así, Desiree reflexiona sobre su concepto y visión de ser artista: -“Arte es comunicación. Es lo que tratas de decir, las emociones que tratas de transmitir, cómo quieres que la gente reaccione ante tu trabajo…”. “¿estás contando una historia?, ¿el trabajo refleja una opinión?, ¿quieres que la audiencia sienta algo?, ¿felicidad?, ¿tristeza?…”. Y cuando consigues transmitir y comunicar… -“te sientes plena, animada, excitada… ¡porque esa es la meta!”.

De este modo, Desiree toma su camino en su expresión como bailarina o mejor dicho, como bailadora de música afrocaribeña, aprovechando el aprendizaje con artistas del más alto nivel, aprendiendo de cada uno de ellos. Artistas como Eddie Torres de quién fue pareja de baile, Griselle Ponce o Bárbara Craddock (ex-pareja de la leyenda Pedro Aguilar, más conocido como Cuban Pete), por poner algunos ejemplos. De ellos tomó esencia, cultura de ésta disciplina de baile, aprendió y valora hoy día la oportunidad de poder haber trabajado con grandísimos talentos: -“En mi carrera he sido muy afortunada de trabajar con artistas brillantes quienes me han retado a ser mejor de lo que era. Soy afortunada de haber trabajado con algunas personas con las que soñaba”.

Desiree Godsell no es una bailarina o bailadora más de bailes latinos, ella no sólo ha sabido aprovechar las oportunidades que dada su calidad como profesional ha obtenido para trabajar con grandes de bailes afrocaribeños, sino también ha puesto su alma, su sabor y su esencia, su toque artístico, nunca perdiendo el objetivo del arte máximo, y eso en un mundo movido en su mayoría por modas no es fácil, añadiendo valor al hecho de estar obteniendo gran éxito con ello trabajando alejada de dichas tendencias.

Con respecto a su visión del panorama del baile latino actual: “Actualmente y refiriéndome específicamente al ambiente del baile latino… nuestro arte se está perdiendo. Todo el mundo parece estar justo en una carrera para llegar a la línea de meta. Se preocupan por bailar música rápida, más vueltas, más figuras… y ¿que le queda al sentimiento?”.

“La cruda emoción del baile que usamos para disfrutar se esta perdiendo, pero Alex (Morel) y yo estamos trabajando para que vuelva”.

De hecho, la frescura y alegría que están trayendo al baile latino Desiree Godsell y Alex Morel está siendo muy beneficiosa, puesto que ambos trabajando juntos de un modo excepcional, están rompiendo mitos, están demostrando que saliéndose de lo convencional y apostando por hacer algo que salga del corazón se puede llegar al éxito tal y como ellos lo están haciendo, dejando modas e imitaciones a un lado. Su baile tiene chispa, tiene sabor, no deja indiferente a su público, en un panorama donde la bachata sensual llena de caras serias (pasión interpretada pero no sentida) y de preocupaciones por realizar ondas perfectas, Desiree y Alex hacen coreografías de bachata dominicana con un pellizco de ellos, con caras bien sonrientes, bailan en escenario un mambo bien romántico lleno de sensualidad o incluso saliéndose de convencionalismos por completo, se aventuran a bailar un merengue que bien alegra a los corazones de ellos y contagiando a aquellos afortunados que tienen la suerte de disfrutar de su pasión a escasos metros.

En posesión de una gran técnica fruto de una larga carrera de formación y experimentación, su naturalidad de movimiento, su genialidad a la

hora de interpretar sus propias coreografías llenas de frescura y originalidad, su alegría derrochada junto a su grandísima pareja Alex Morel, un estilo propio, sumado a una enorme versatilidad puesto que igual baila un rico mambo con la esencia de la época del Palladium, que baila una semba o una bachata, aportando siempre su personalidad y su creatividad, todo ello haciendo de ella una de las mejores bailadoras de este mundo, en resumen: UNA ARTISTA.

Al sugerir a Desiree la posibilidad de dar talleres en congresos sobre temas tan importantes como recalcar el objetivo del disfrute contrariamente a los talleres convencionales de pasitos que al cabo de las 4 horas se han olvidado, nos comenta: -“Depende de que los promotores quieran darnos esa oportunidad”. “Yo he enseñado composición, coreografías, escenario… pero nunca en un congreso, son muy ráInternational Salsa Magazine / Oct 2015

Move your hips. Most of the movement in the Salsa comes from the hips, so you will want to keep your hips loose. Don’t be afraid to sway your hips. Even if you’re just moving your foot, know that a slight hip movement goes along with it. If you move your right foot out, your right hip juts out a bit, too.

Choose a song that has a 4/4 beat (four beats to the bar) and a fast tempo[2]. You’ll want music that lies somewhere between 160-220 beats per minute.[3] Before you start a song, make sure that you can keep up with the speed and identify the beats for your steps.

Count as you listen to the song. If you count out the beats in the music, you will be able to find the Salsa beat and identify which steps go with which beat. If you can’t keep count while you’re listening to the song, it’s best to choose a different one.

4/4 time is counted in 8-counts. You’ll be doing one standard Salsa step in 8 beats.
