HINDMARSH CONSTRUCTION AUSTRALIA Project ANU Colleges of Science - Biosciences Building
Hindmarsh has worked continuously with ANU for the past seven years on a range of projects including laboratories and research facilities, with the Colleges of Science – Biosciences Building an exceptional example of collaboration between the project team, client and a core group of subcontractors. The Biosciences Building incorporates extremely complex architectural facade elements, with a mix of digitally moulded precast panels, high performance glazing, lightweight aluminium panelling installed with intricate geometric patterns and recycled timber sunshades.
The building has 16 constant temperature rooms, built to meet stringent temperature control requirements of plus or minus one degree. These rooms also operate under tight restrictions on airflow to prevent damage to plant materials during experiments. The building also includes a number of environmentally sustainable design elements; the following is a summary of the key features:
Office adaptive air conditioning – a 20% cheaper capital cost, and 30% to 40% cheaper to operate. Rainwater harvesting – connected to the ‘reverse osmosis’ water filtration system that is reticulated throughout the laboratories for use in experiments. Lighting control system – includes sensors, timers and low energy lamping.
Thermal Chimneys – allow hot air to be exhausted from the office areas of the building and so assist with reducing energy usage.

During the construction process Hindmarsh implemented a concrete slurry waste bin with a filter mechanism that prevented contamination of the ground with heavily alkaline water. The ANU Colleges of Science - Biosciences Building project saw a significant growth in the project team in terms of formal training and development. Three cadets were employed, who were undertaking full-time bachelor degree studies. Two other experienced Hindmarsh staff are also undertaking part-time bachelor degree studies. These staff enjoyed flexible working arrangements to allow them to meet both work and study commitments.
Most Awarded The ANU Colleges of Science - Biosciences Building received six awards including Project of the Year, the most prestigious of commercial categories within the Master Builders & Boral Excellence in Building awards: • • • • • •

SUBCONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR
J&J Interiors With two category wins for their outstanding workmanship on the ANU Colleges of Science - Biosciences Building, J & J Interiors can be proud to be acknowledged as elite in their field of expertise. The ANU Colleges of Science - Biosciences Building’s complex set-out required a high degree of accuracy to achieve the very fine detail evident from the architectural drawings. The finished result was most impressive due to the quality of the workmanship and skills of the site staff and tradesmen. Whilst the choice of the materials in the building rests with the architect, the end result rests on the skill of the contractor and it was through their unwavering dedication to achieving the highest quality outcomes for their clients that gave J & J Interiors their edge in this year’s Subcontractor of the Year award.

Having judged Rod’s work over the last few years and being very impressed by his knowledge of his craft and his ability to work in cooperative arrangements with both his clients and the designers, the judges considered Rod’s effort deserved recognition. His latest entry, the St. Gregory’s Primary School Hall, is a striking building that complements the existing Chapel adjacent to the site. The use of stone, off form cement, state of the art louvres and automated doors make this a special building. St. Gregory’s Primary School Hall was built to the high standard that we have grown to expect of this capable young builder.

Modern Plaster For over 50 years, Ross Burke (pictured) and Modern Plaster have built an outstanding reputation that many within the building and construction industry would be proud of. Starting in the 1960s, Modern Plaster, then run by Ross’s father Tom, specialised in manufacturing and supplying fibrous plaster products from their warehouse in Ross Road, Queanbeyan. This included the manufacture of decorative cornices and castings for commercial projects. The conical light shafts for the New Parliament House were a standout project. Ross has devoted an enormous amount of his personal life to raising standards of professionalism in the industry and he helped start TAFE training for plasterers in Canberra ensuring skills aren’t lost to future generations. St Hilliers Project Harrison Secondary School
This is a substantial project comprising several teaching areas spread over a number of buildings, plus very substantial external works. The level of facilities includes science laboratories, fully fitted carpentry and metal working workshops, full home economics classrooms, a substantial gymnasium and a range of classrooms. The buildings are numerous with a wide variety of complex finishes externally, on various planes, with complex roof ventilation facilities, high ceilings internally and a high level of fit out. Recognising the tight delivery program, St Hilliers worked in close association with the design team, through value management, to meet the client’s budget allowing the project to proceed into construction. Despite the very limited program, the workmanship throughout the project is of an extremely high standard, including through the external works.

As a consequence the original building was redesigned into two completely separate buildings, tens of metres apart. The ANU Innovations Building refurbishment included 110 open plan work points, five executive offices, reception and conference facilities, meeting rooms and staff breakout areas. The client wanted first class accommodation for their employees in flexible spaces that could, over time, adapt to the changing needs of the ANU. However, what really caught the judges’ attention was the care that had been taken with the extensive mechanical and electrical services that were all exposed below the concrete slabs and demonstrated the extent of coordination that must have occurred between the various tradesmen and the site staff to achieve such an impressive finish. The end result is a high quality modern fitout designed and constructed to meet the client’s requirements.

Features of the project include the reuse of the timber floors and ceilings. The ‘ideas paint’ on some walls allow the teachers and students to write on the walls instead of traditional whiteboards. The result is a very high quality product, in particular the joinery, and a very satisfied client.

Commercial Project Exhibiting Technical Difficulty
Hindmarsh Construction Australia Project ANU Colleges of Science Biosciences Building From the complexity of the external envelope of this building it was obvious that considerable effort was required by the construction team to meet the wishes of the Architect. Varying angles, different elevational planes and an assortment of different materials have been carefully managed to achieve the end result. Some of the internal finishes were no different, with the complex shapes of the walls and ceiling finishes adding to the degree of difficulty to be addressed by the various fit out trades. In addition the complex servicing required of the research areas including separate water and separate waste facilities, duplicated power supplies, various gas reticulations, cold rooms, classified laboratories, dedicated air conditioning and mechanical ventilation systems provided within the building made it a clear choice for the judges as the winner in this category of technical difficulty.

Nikias Diamond Property Developments Project Compass House
The judges were very impressed by the extent of the new technology used in this privately owned and operated building, particularly given its limited size. The energy saving systems installed and their degree of control was a credit to the designers and installers and full marks to the owners for investing in what obviously added considerable cost to the capital cost of the building. Such insight needs to be supported.

The Kings Avenue Overpass is a high quality bridge and ramp solution for a major road intersection, replacing the previous at-grade roundabout at the formal entrance to the parliamentary triangle. The project was technically complex with many challenges to overcome. The high quality requirements for each of the many individual elements of work were achieved in each case to the complete satisfaction of the client. The overall result is one of which the whole project team can be proud and the project thoroughly deserves its award.

Cord Civil Project Ginninderra Drive and Aikman Drive Intersection Upgrade The upgrade of the Ginninderra and Aikman Drive intersection included extensive relocation of services. Special challenges contributing to the complexity of the project included achieving fine tolerances on levels and grades in kerbing and pavements, managing drainage during constructions, as well as difficult traffic management and dealing with environmental sensitivities on the site. The contractor made good use of recycled materials, both on and off the site and demonstrated good skills in liaison and consultation with project stakeholders to produce a very satisfactory result.

Hewatt Earthworks Project Jiparu Stage 2
This project comprised the second stage of the Jiparu rural subdivision at Murrumbateman and involved 2.8km of roads, services and landscaping for 46 rural acreage blocks. The main challenges in this project centred around the relative flat grades and the higher than normal moisture content of the grassland and open woodland site. The construction team contributed significantly to the final design of the works to resolve these challenges in an environmentally sensitive manner. The works also included innovative approaches to drainage, water supply and recreation facilities which of special interest to the client.

This project was for the manufacture, delivery and installation of plexiglass bridge safety screens over Adelaide Avenue and included the modification to the existing bridge to accept the new screens. This work represented a unique approach to bridge screening incorporating the design of public art which is highly visible on one of Canberra’s main traffic routes. The contractor undertook this project utilising complex scaffolding arrangements to allow modification to the existing bridge and installation of the new work to be done with minimal interruption to traffic plans. The work was labour intensive and exacting as each screening panel was unique in size and shape. The result is a credit to the professional and enthusiastic team involved in the project.

Lend Lease Project Management & Construction Project 4 National Circuit
Lend Lease Project Management & Construction has developed its project at 4 National Circuit Barton as a benchmark in the development and delivery of safety systems in Australia’s construction industry. This WH&S system is built on Lend Lease’s Global Minimum Requirements of achieving outstanding results through an integrated system that applies to all that work on site. The system is built on a highly structured risk assessment process and the development of ways in which risks can be fully mitigated. In the case of the 4 National Circuit project one such risk can be used to illustrate their achievement of outstanding safety outcomes. This risk was associated with work on the internal atrium where the erection of an internal scaffolding system had never been tried before. The system ensures all working from the scaffold as it was raised and lowered for works could be done in total safety. A marvellous example of the Lend Lease team and the scaffolding team examining and responding as one team for the benefit and safety of all.

ACT Recycling Project Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre
ACT Recycling Resource Management Centre at Mugga Lane is a work in progress for the operators who had a vision to recycle the waste from building sites and turn that waste into great products that ultimately reduces the carbon footprint of the building industry on our fragile environment. Last year the Centre recycled 510,000 tonnes or 96% of concrete, asphalt, bricks, timber and other waste into products used in roads, landscaping and other garden products. The cost of builders presenting their waste for treatment and purchasing for reuse is commensurate with going to landfill with waste and obtaining naturally mined products for use in their building products. The Centre will add a unique bio-char production plant this year which will produce high quality fertilizer for reuse.

The quality of the workmanship using mainly veneered timbers as wall linings is a credit to the set out and skills of J & J Interior’s site staff and tradesmen. The judges appreciated the complexity associated with the timber wall linings in the main access walkways and staircases, together with the high degree of accuracy required between the metal and timber components to achieve the very fine detail evident from the architectural drawings. The finished result is most impressive.
