Read it out loud, “HUGA”, with a heavy “h”! There are those who leave the trace of an “I” in the first syllable, making it “H(i)UGA” (yes, just a trace!). This is how you pronounce the theme of today! How come? Why produce an edition of MOS Magazine all about a word which doesn’t exist in Portuguese or Brazilian dictionaries? It would be just like making an edition about Fado (Portuguese music), Saudade (a feeling of longing or nostalgia that is characteristic of the Portuguese or Brazilian temperament) or even Cafuné (the act of tenderly running fingers through a loved one’s hair, popularly considered a gesture of love and affection). They are words to be felt and not said! In this issue we’ll be inspired by this concept, try to define it and illustrate something which is immaterial. We’ll talk with wonderful people from all over the world, including Danes, to gain an understanding of the essence of this word. And at times, we’ll translate the term “hygge” to “practice hygge”. It’s important to point out that our suggestions here for creating a more hygge environment are intended only to inspire you. Good readings!

This is a project of educational nature related to sustainability, and dedicated to children from 6 to 12 years. The text was written by Susana Machado and the design and the illustration were elaborated by the arts class of the Colégio Nova da Maia (in Portugal). According to the writer, this is a book inspired by one of the most productive and sustainable sectors of our country and “depicts the adventures of an acorn that did not understand the importance of her role, nor the forest where she lived. Hygge The exact origin of the word hygge is unknown. However, some speculations do exist. They have discovered that the word “hugge”, which was used in the 16th century, and means to hug, gave way to the English word “hug”, to embrace. There had to be a connection, right? But there is yet another theory. Did you know that Denmark and Norway used to be one kingdom? There is a belief that the word “hygge” had its origin in a Norwegian word that means “well-being”. And that it only appeared in Danish writing for the first time at the beginning of the 1800s, in the time that Denmark lost Norway.

For anyone new to hygge, it’s easy to assume that it’s all about the big slices of cake, the cosy blankets and the woolly socks. Hygge à la Portuguese! W ords : M afalda S ousa
P hotography : D jedj & M afalda S ousa
We all already have our hyggeligt moments. It’s as simple as when it’s raining outside and we curl up on the sofa with a good book. Or when we have a Sunday barbeque and laugh our heads off with our friends. The feeling of being in a welcoming, stress-free environment is not exclusive to Denmark. Nationality, class or background are not important, we can all try hygge! The difference is that, contrary to the Danish, we don’t yet carry out these activities on the daily in Portugal. But, this can change. These are just suggestions, but they can inspire your creativity. The important thing is to set aside a small part of your day for these moments. There are some activities that demand more time but with others it is merely choice between watching TV or surfing the internet and doing something different, alone or with those you love. As Sonja Lyubormisky notes, “knowing how to enjoy positive life experiences is one of the main ingredients of happiness”. The daily practice of hygge is indeed noted as one of the reasons that Denmark is one of the happiest countries in the world. Maybe because many of its ingredients are among the accepted in what stimulates happiness: spending quality time with family and friends, savouring the simple pleasures in life, cultivating optimism, etc. 18

1. A true Portuguese house Your house is the perfect refuge to create your hygge moments. It’s suffice to just create a welcoming environment. On top if the usual hygge things like blankets, cushions and candles, include objects that bring back happy memories and celebrate your roots. Photographs are welcome, souvenirs brought back from vacations or vintage pieces. Include typical Portuguese objects such as azulejos (Portuguese ceramic tiles), Portuguese ceramic swallows, pieces of cork, and why not some stones from the beach? Make the most of living in a country full of sunshine and transform your patio or garden into pretty and welcoming spaces. They are perfect places to relax!
2. Everyday hygge Take advantage of the positive energy of the sunrise! If you can, eat your breakfast whilst watching this incredible natural spectacle. In work, create friendships. Spend more time with your colleagues, especially those with whom you have something in common. However, try to leave on time and not bring your work home. You’re going to need this time to relax with your family. In the evening, try something new. Remember your childhood games, with a pack of cards or Monopoly. If you have a fireplace, share stories with the family or read, by the sound of a crackling fire. You can also create that cinema feeling by watching the Portuguese classics. Popcorn included, if you so wish. 20
Master of Simplicity Magazine
3. Comforting meals Hygge á la Portuguese combines coffee with a beautiful Portuguese custard tart. With roasted chestnuts, bought on the street. With homemade meals that take us back to our roots, may they be the most elaborate cod or the humblest sardines. Try dishes that are filled with memories and appreciate every moment of the meal. Ah! And, if the kids want to lick the bowl when you’re making a cake… well, you can’t say no, it’s hygge!
4. Make the most of our wonderful climate It sounds lovely to wear comfy clothes and enjoy a hot drink in the winter. But Portuguese hygge is very different from this. With such a pleasant climate, you can go out and explore the wonders that surround you. Meditate by the sea, have a walk in nature, get to know the history of our many monuments, visit a Fado hall (and let yourself be enchanted by this musical genre) or simply hang out with friends on the boardwalk.
5. Holiday Season This is the perfect time to teach hygge to the newcomers. Tell stories, offer to help with the preparations like laying the crib or making traditional cakes. Organize activities, like an Easter egg hunt, and eat with family. These are unique moments that will stay forever in your memory. The fact remains: everyone can become happier from a hygge experience, even in the Portuguese way.

Brazil and Denmark have many more differences than similarities. While the former suffers from so much inequality, the Danish boast great social justice and are among the happiest people in the world, according to the UN.
22
Master of Simplicity Magazine
And it’s not only about social policies that Brazilians can learn from the Danish. A word which is almost unknown in Brazil could bring new perspectives when considering happiness: hygge.
Tropical Hygge
W ords & P hotography : F ernando M iranda & J uliana L ima
It was during a visit to Portugal that we discovered this Danish lifestyle. While visiting a bookstore in Lisbon, we came across the book Hygge, by Meik Wiking. On returning to Brazil, we became infatuated by it. We decided to share these principles with more people, adapting the concept to our own way of life, of course. We did our research, spoke to Brazilians and Danes and set up meet-ups to talk about the concept. During these conversations, a young Danish girl who had lived in Brazil for one year brought forward a different and interesting perception about our people. She had observed that, in spite of Brazilians being known for happiness and relaxation, some people that she knew were always having parties with friends, laughing, telling jokes, but they were not truly happy. They put on a kind of front of happiness, that didn’t reflect how they really felt inside. So when we talk about the concept of hygge in our part of the world, we always try to highlight that, in spite of the big differences between Brazil and Denmark, it is possible to live hygge in our day to day lives. Is there anything more Brazilian (or more hyggelig) than a coffee with a bolo de fubá (cornmeal cake)? Or a stroll in the park or on the beach, enjoying the warmth of our country? And what about resting in a hammock, in the shadow of a tree? Paying attention to small details like these can transform this ideal of happiness into something real – and truly possible.

It’s also these face to face moments which we hold in our memories, and for this reason, we’re going to give them the importance they deserve. Our brains will thank us for this break from technology. Being happy it’s simple... W ords : C laudia W eber P hotography : R awpixel
Is “being happy” not the prime objective of human beings?
26
Master of Simplicity Magazine
...but not easy
On a scale of 0 to 10, how happy would I say I am? Am I fulfilling my purpose in life? How many times did I feel happy in the last week? How many times did I laugh in the last few days? What makes me happy? What can I do today to make myself feel happier? These are important questions which we should ask ourselves regularly if we want to guarantee our long-term well-being. Reflecting on happiness, however, is not an urgent matter, and we often end up thinking that we don’t have time for these types of reveries. Yet, what is more important? Is “being happy” not the prime objective of human beings? Happiness is not something which happens by chance. We all have our “base”: the level of happiness which we revert to after any positive or negative experience. Various studies show that those who suffer a serious accident, just as much as those who win the lottery, all end up reverting to their “base-level” of happiness after time. This does not mean, however, that we are all doomed and there is nothing to be done! Quite the contrary: the good news is that it is possible to alter our “base-level” of happiness, and this does not mean abandoning our lives and moving to an exotic place to spend the rest of our days under a palm-tree on the shore. So, what can we do for our happiness? It is simpler than we tend to
think and a recipe even exists: the ingredients are attention, awareness, consistency and intent. That is: we can and we should plan our happiness. How? By creating happy moments. In practice, this means keeping in mind what is important in the long term, practicing gratitude and creating hygge moments every day: a hot drink on a rainy afternoon, a meal with good friends, a relaxed and unhurried conversation, face to face. In the end, we are creating memories, and nostalgia can be a deciding factor of happiness. It’s also very important to pay attention to our focus: do I often think and talk more about positive events or things which have gone wrong? By intentionally reliving happy moments from the past, we are creating thinking habits that have a direct link to our base-level of happiness. Shall we start now? Close your eyes. Recall a happy moment from your childhood. Listen and sing along with one of your favourite songs. Call a friend who you haven’t spoken to in a while. Hug a loved one. Linger a little longer. Repeat. In the end, as the romanticist Maria Edgeworth says, “If we take care of the moments, the years will take care of themselves.” Master of Simplicity Magazine

Human beings have always longed to live in peace, harmony and happiness. We carry out this search in all aspects of our lives, from the most superficial to the deepest. But it’s already been suggested that the solution does not lie outside of us, but inside. That only by submerging ourselves in our own soul do we have a chance of being happy. This submersion is a path to growth, not only in one direction, but in all directions. It’s an expansion of that which we truly are: consciousness. Only through internal development, through a genuine self-awareness and a holistic balance, will we achieve harmony, peace and happiness. It is this way because the mind determines everything. While the mind is turbulent and agitated, we are distant from ourselves, we are strangers to ourselves and victims of a life which we think is unfair. We can begin by a process of expansion of our consciousness. Independent from needing a religious

nature or a more free or global quality, the truth is that the choice is personal. Awareness is inherent in all of us, it is our existential truth, it is the fundamental source of harmony, and thus it is not dependant on theological foundations. Peace and happiness are like two sides of the same coin: peace occurs when we accept completely all that exists, as it exists; happiness occurs when we allow ourselves to relax and enjoy our existence in a natural and healthy way. As our consciousness expands, our mind Is purified and understood, our position of acceptance and relaxation before the world is also altered, and we can finally achieve a more healthy, prosperous and relaxing life. Various ‘ready-made’ paths exist to support someone who is searching for something more, but the best path is that which is made, bit by bit, anchored in your faith in yourself and in eternity, towards truth and unconditional love.

of my grandma I remember those afternoons in my grandmother’s house, the silence, the light. She never had the habit of lighting candles, but she was hygge, in her own way. She listened to the radio at a distance from the kitchen while she moved slowly around the house, taking care of the chores. In quince season, she made jelly for the whole year, in tomato season, sweet tomato jam, in reusable bottles with lids on the bottom. My grandmother was zero-waste. The few plastic bags she used lay on the drying rack, because she washed them so that she could use them again. And, the remaining bits of the fruit and vegetables, acted as compost for the soil. When I began my journey, I went to my grandparents for help. A life without waste was, for me, a return to their time: things made by hand, reclaimed to the fullest, fixed and mended. And, the magic of doing, creating and putting love into every task, knowing the cost of everything. 32

What is Hygge?
When and where did it start?

Hygge dislikes confrontation, so everybody needs to agree not to talk about the things that will make others angry. In most families, that means no politics, religion or discussion of pet peeves. If you want to live hyggely that will mean being calm and peaceful, not getting angry with others when you’re in a group. It doesn’t mean you have to be that way all the time. You can’t live hyggely 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You can use your house to create a perfect spot for hygge. Keep the lighting low, with lamps and candles, have comfy seating with cushions and throws, and always have a pile of books or magazines to read and enjoy. It’s like making a nest for yourself, a place to feel warm and safe. In Danish, this is called a hyggekrog, but I call it my Hygge Nook. That’s the name I gave the Facebook group as well, because it’s a safe space to get together with friends. In your opinion, hygge happens when we want or occasionally? Occasionally. People were starting to say “How can we hygge in Britain?” and I thought, why not write a blog? So I started How to Hygge The British Way and then a Facebook group for people to share their own hygge. And then I wrote a book, 50 Ways to Hygge The British Way. Being Hygge so ingrained in Danish culture, do you believe that it is something that can be exported to other countries? Yes. I think wanting to feel a part of a happy group, and wanting to feel loved, safe and secure is a universal feeling. Hygge also takes a lot of pleasure from the small Hot drinks, crafting and radio

mountain at sunset. A picture that makes me relax. Having food and drink always makes hygge easier. Perhaps everybody could have a coffee break together sometimes, a chance to talk and build the team spirit. Or bring cakes and cookies into the office. Celebrate birthdays or promotions, or just have a special day ‘just because’. You can have solo hygge moments at work as well. That’s when Hygge in the Office
Question from Giovani: How can someone have a hyggeligt moment at work? Make space for it. To feel hygge at work you need two things: a place for it, and people to enjoy it with. If you have friends that you work with, that’s brilliant, but you need to really trust your colleagues to feel properly hygge. Building strong friendships, by going out after work or by talking in the office and becoming friends, helps. That means you will have people in the office that you can feel happy, comfy and secure with. Then you need to think about whether the office can make you feel hyggelig. Most offices are large and white, so it’s hard. You can make an office more hyggelig if you try and keep a corner of it cosy. Use plants, use a lamp on your desk instead of bright lighting, and use your space to create a place where you feel happy. I like having a cosy screensaver on my computer, like a pair of feet in front of a fire, or a 42

you light the candle, if you can, make a hot drink and just sit back for a few minutes sipping your hot drink. Close your eyes, let yourself relax and see if you feel hyggeligt then. Question from Cibele: How do you pronounce the word Hygge? I say it hue-ga. That’s how I heard Meik Wiking say it on TV in 2016, but there is some variations according to whether you are in Norway or Denmark. Ultimately it doesn’t matter how you say it, just that you feel it. Question from Teresa: Have you ever identified someone in a different country practicing Hygge? I think there must be a lot of hygge happening in Spain. I remember going to Barcelona, and going to a restaurant where there was a young family out eating. They were happy, smiling and not at all bothered by the rest of the restaurant. Judging by the amount of hugs and the looks going round, I think they were having a hyggely time. We have a lot of international members

Live your home In the rushed days of today, stopping for a little while is becoming more and more of a necessity. The idea of having a home and seeing it as our refuge, the perfect place for us to stop, or as many people put it now, “live slow, is simply fundamental and wonderful at the same time. Its role in our lives is really very important, as it is in our home where we begin and end our days. Therefore, I think we should look after it as well as we look after ourselves, as the energy that it gives out will certainly influence us. So, it is really vital that it radiates the feelings and emotions that we desire.

Dear MOS Magazine, I have gotten rid of so many clothes and things but, of all the things that I get rid of, books are always in last place. The clear-out is not supposed to be harsh, but there is a lot of sentimental value involved. If I had got rid of them before I was ready, I probably would have regretted it. I feel like it’s now time to let them go. Many went already into the hands of people with a twinkle in their eyes, the twinkle of those who are in search of more knowledge, like a hunger, you know?
Having many pretty books on a shelf, in my opinion, is a shallow vanity. It’s an attachment to things, a trophy to those who collect titles, a pride of being the first generation of the family to go to college, to a private one even more so - proof that they managed to finish their studies even through difficulties. And so, all of the feelings described above were superseded by the pleasure of seeing others benefit from the knowledge, in particular those who couldn’t afford books themselves. Flávia Beck

She fought for a while in vain against the current of thoughts that inundated her mind. Things to do, ideas to be put in place. Outside, the day began to clear up, it had been cold and raining. It was still very early. She closed her eyes again. Inside the bedroom, on the contrary, there was a lovely warmth. Under the duvet, the three of them were there wearing just some light pyjamas. There were many people that criticised this way of sleeping, but she had decided long ago not to listen to them. They were proud of their “love sandwichâ€? and so they continued to sleep that way until the little one no longer needed their presence, demanded her own space or it simply came to an end naturally, without tears, dramas or trauma. Cradled by this sweet feeling of comfort, she ended up forgetting all of those day to day things that had invaded her brain and she let herself fall asleep again, with a smile on her face of pure happiness. Happiness made up solely of the simplicity of the moment. When she woke again, a few hours later, a pleasant and cozy smell filled the room‌probably the whole house. It smelled of oatmeal and warm bread. Moments later, the love of her life crept into the room with a tray in his hands,

intensifying the aroma. In a sort of childlike way, she pretended to still be sleeping whilst she spied him through her half-closed eyes. He lay the tray on to the bedside table, and delicately brushed away a lock of hair from her face. She stretched, smiled and received with pleasure her wake-up kiss. Then right away, a small head appeared at the door, repeating in the cutest voice: -Mommy…mommy… She came towards her with her arms open, extending her hand, showing her a flower. The mother smiled: -Oh, how cute. Is it a special day today? - Yes of course, her husband replied. It’s today! They both laughed. The little one, infected by this laughter, laughed as well in loud cackles that made the parents laugh even more. She finally dipped into the oatmeal. Deliciously hot, with a sprinkling of cinnamon, just as she liked it. The butter was still melting on the bread. They savoured their breakfast together as a family. Then they tidied everything and went out. The weather wasn’t the most inviting, but they walked through the nature, looking at the leaves, the birds and all of the little details

that crossed their path. Every detail was an opportunity to learn, to contemplate. They gathered themselves a little while later to prepare lunch, as they always did, with tasks shared out between laughs and conversations. In the cozy space of the kitchen, the smells of the food mixed with the sounds that made her recall her childhood. The sweet and happy stage of life that she now tried to recreate for her own daughter. While her daughter had a nap, she sat down in front of the fireplace, facing the window, and had a hot cup of tea with a little honey and read her book. As much as it captured her attention, she stopped reading every so often, if only to appreciate the crackle of the firewood or to admire the trees that swayed in the wind. Idle and care free. She breathed deeply, allowing herself to feel the calm and serenity all of this inspired, the happiness that flooded her soul. Maria knew that it had not always been like this. She remembered a time in her life when everything was chaotic and confusing, in which everything generated anxiety. One day she resolved to change, to find a satisfaction that was full and constant and, after much searching, she realised that this existed within her, in the simple things, in family, in her treasured friends. And day after day she learned to be conscious of this reality.

She curled up more in the fluffy woolen blanket that covered her and looked again out of the window. The sun had started to set on the horizon. Her husband came into the room and they hugged and contemplated the moment together. -
It’s nearly dinner time – he said.
The doorbell rang. -
And they are here – she responded, smiling.
On the other side of the door, a couple who were old friends waited. They came in and all got together in the kitchen to prepare the meal. The couple’s children played happily with their little girl, who in the meantime had woken up. Together around the table, by the light of the candle and the fire they continued to talk into the small hours. The children, tired from all the playing, finally gave in to slumber and fell asleep on the sofa. When they finally went to bed, the little one opened her eyes and, still half asleep exclaimed: -
Mom, it was a perfect day! – And then closed her eyes
again and fell into a delicious sleep. The parents looked at each other and smiled. And then they closed their eyes, too. Yes, they had had a perfect day - like all days could be.

What the eyes don’t see ... is the greatest beauty that surrounds us and blesses every moment of our journey and to which we are not always mindful. I make that my hygge. It is in the midst of nature that I find my balance and my comfort making the most of the present and making my camera just the extension of my arm and look.

When we talk about slow living, more often than not we’re talking about time. But, time, contrary to what our watch tells us, has in reality two definitions: the speed of time and the speed of being. Master of Simplicity Magazine

We can connect to this movement in many ways, but I’ll leave you with just a few possibilities: 1. Find simplicity, may it be through living with less money or consuming less, prioritizing family and personal time; 2. Be aware of what we eat, what we buy and the way in which we discard our waste; 3. Preserve the heritage and the social values of the places that surround us; 4. Look after our personal relationships, un-

derstanding that often a more immediate and deep connection happens when we focus completely on the other person and listen fully to their story; 5. We should not search outside ourselves for the life which we have inside, and which we are capable of connecting to through our journey in life: our body, our emotions, the spiritual path we have chosen to follow, death and grief; 6. Be capable of slowing down the mind to understand what path we wish to take, because we are at times blindsided when we are rushing; 7. Embrace the unknown that presents itself in every passing day.

The biggest obstacles towards the SLOW movement are fear, guilt and shame: to be alone with our thoughts; of being different, lazy; or not doing what is needed, losing one thing in favour of another. However, it’s important to remember to slow down your space to better observe and thus question: Who am I? What is my purpose? What life do I want to follow? How do I make the world a better place? The opportunity to live the life we’ve dreamed of, never leaves. The perfect days stack up and wait to be seized. For this reason, the only correct rhythm is to be present. To be fully there in every moment.

Soy’s greatest advantage is that it is com-
pletely renewable. In addition to sustainability, there are many benefits to choosing soy wax candles such as: 1) They burn clean. Since there are no toxins, carcinogens, or pollutants in soy, our candles are less likely to trigger any allergies. This also means that our candles won’t release any soot, as opposed to paraffin candles (since those are petroleum based) 2) They last longer. Soy melting point is much lower than other candles, which means the wax will burn for about 50% longer than a paraffin candle; 3) They are easier to clean. Soy wax is also water soluble. This means that if you happen to spill, the cleanup is extremely easy (paper cloth and water); 4) Bonus! They can be used as lotion. Yep, you read that right! Since soy has no toxins and is entirely eco-friendly, you can dip your finger in the melted wax (not the flame!) and use it in your hands as lotion. Pretty cool!

The Saponina candles are uniquely produced with organic soy and essential oils, completely free from petrol derivatives, such as paraffin and other harmful chemicals that damage the environment and the respiratory system. When we open a wardrobe, we immediately sense the reinvigorating freshness of the lemongrass, lavender and orange blossom air fresheners. The perfumed soy discs are just one of the best-sellers, they can be used in an oil-burner to release the enveloping floral freshness into the atmosphere or inside drawers to delicately perfume your clothes. Saponina candles are an indispensable element for those who want to create a healthy, harmonious and hygge environment or to simply share good times. You can find Saponina products via Instagram or Facebook or very soon, on the online store.

Every piece is designed and made by Margarida herself, in Portugal. Having a national production – one of the aims of the brand – as well as wanting to be a “woman of the people”, is something that drives Margarida. Although currently the brand is in a transition phase (they are moving to a new studio), they will create their first collection this year, using simple and subtle pieces but with production on a bigger scale, and with designs executed on the items by Margarida herself.
The essence of the pieces made by Círculo Ceramics is crucial for the practice of Hygge - you can place candles or flowers in them, and although they are discreet they are still something which all of the family wants to gather round. On top of this, everything is done by hand and at a moderate pace, which is a very valued part of Hygge. Master of Simplicity Magazine

“OrganiCup is an alternative to conventional absorbents and tampons but considerably healthier and more comfortable.”

Elizabete Gomes is a mom, passionate about eco-design
and a freelance designer. She is the founder of the online store
BAZAR BAZAR Eco-Shop and the OrganiCup representative for Portugal.
What are the main benefits? The truth is there are lots…I think the main one is that fact it is much healthier! OrganiCup is made entirely from 100% surgical silicone (without any other ingredient or colorant and certified as hypoallergenic by Allergy Certified). This type of silicone is used in medical environments and, for example, in baby’s soothers, due to its biocompatible qualities. It 102 Master Masterofof Simplicity Simplicity Magazine Magazine
doesn’t change with humidity or temperature and is naturally anti-bacterial. It doesn’t leave any residue in the body of the user and does not absorb the natural moisture of the vaginal canal like absorbents or tampons. Thus it is much healthier and safer for women. However, although this may be the main reason to change and leave behind the conventional methods, OrganiCup also avoids the tonnes of
global waste and non-recyclable plastic created by conventional products. It is very economical – one OrganiCup costs 24€ and can last up to 10 years. Imagine, 10 years without buying towels or tampons! It’s revolutionary! But, what is also fantastic is the freedom it gives us during our period! We usually spend our periods worried about going to the bathroom to change, whether we’ve run out of tampons, whether we can sleep with a tampon…Today I have swimming lesson and I’ve forgotten my tampons…This towel has a strange smell, will anyone notice?... My period has come and I forgot to buy towels, etc, etc. All of these thoughts in our heads constantly for 5 days… OrganiCup changes the model of periods and of constant worry. I remember one time when my period arrived early. I had absolutely nothing at home and I had to give a training sessions at the
OrganiCup was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2012. And “it is the result of the persistence of a designer (also one of the founders) who believed that conventional female hygiene products were not healthy or sustainable”, states Elizabete Gomes. She adds that “Denmark has one of the most developed and sensitive societies in the world with regard to well-being and sustainability”.
company where I worked at 8.30am. Help??! After the initial shock, I had the brilliant idea of searching through every bag that I owned (which is quite a few) and finally discovered a lost tampon…I arrived late to the training and I still had to run to a gas station in the interval. Every woman goes through these menstrual “adventures”, every month for years…and it’s tiring. And, OrganiCup solves this. It’s always there and ready to use, full stop. No more worries.
H ow d o e s i t p reve n t allergies? It’s important to point out that towels and tampons are not 100% cotton, that is, the majority of them contain synthetic ingredients which are harmful to our health: pesticide residue, perfumes, plastics, phthalates, chlorine, softeners, viscose, among others…So these ingredients are absorbed constantly for 5 days (or more) every month, every year through the female intimate parts, directly (tampons) or indirectly (towels). This is the reason that many

women suffer from irritations or infections during their periods and the days following. A lot of the time we don’t realise how one thing provokes the other. On top of this, conventional towels and tampons are so absorbent that they absorb the natural moisture of the vagina, making it extremely dry, uncomfortable and vulnerable. OrganiCup collects just what needs to be collected without leaving residues or absorbing natural moisture. How did you hear about OrganiCup? It was by chance. After becoming a mother and having 2 years with no menstruation, I noticed
104 Master of Simplicity Magazine
that during this time I had never had any irritation, allergies or dryness… Absolutely nothing. When I began to menstruate again, I realised that I would have to buy specific tampon and towel brands that didn’t give me an allergy. I went to Google and began to read articles about the subject. As incredible as it seems, I had never associated one thing with the other until then. I found an article in English about OrganiCup, and I was so impressed by the reviews and testimonies. I thought, “well, it can’t
get any worse…” I ordered one and when it arrived I was a little scared: “I’ve made a mistake! Where do I put this thing???”. But, calmly and while not menstruating I took the OrganiCup and tried it on. It took a few goes until I worked out how it worked. A few days later my period came and I ran to the bathroom for the OrganiCup! In two or three tries it was inserted. This whole day I was very suspicious and kept running to the bathroom because I didn’t want to believe that everything was OK... and that’s how I spent one period…two periods…at the end of 3 months, it became clear that OrganiCup was too important to end there.
Do you think that OrganiCup

What are women’s main worries? The main worries are around inserting and re-

Many women think that we insert the cup open and that you can feel it when you’re wearing it, which is incorrect. We insert the cup folded and it opens softly, adapting itself to our body. And you don’t feel it.
Ah! And we don’t know of any user who has “lost” the cup, you can rest assured that it’s not going anywhere…Moreover, you can find all of the questions and doubts on our Facebook page, answered in Portuguese!
How do you think women who don’t yet use a menstrual cup can overcome the taboos or initial fears? I think that above all, they should inform themselves. Many women have now written about the experience in Portuguese. As a start, they could watch our video-guide (with optional subtitles in Portuguese) that will help to explain very well how to use OrganiCup.
