WELCOME
It’s great to welcome you back to the world-famous Brecon Jazz festival in our second year as operator of this landmark heritage event. Orchard took the reins of Brecon Jazz in 2012, and established a strong and effective partnership with the town and its people, ensuring last year’s event was largely well received. Feedback was very positive, the beautiful town of Brecon was buzzing, and we all enjoyed some fantastic music. We also learned a great deal, and we’ll bring that experience and knowledge to bear in subsequent years – starting with 2013. This August we have increased the number of shows in the programme by a third, and added another venue to last year’s bill. Once again we’ve assembled some of the best international and home-bred Jazz talent to appeal to the varied tastes of the diverse Brecon Jazz audience. Brecon 2013 hosts some leading lights of the Jazz world, Django Bates, Jools Holland, Courtney Pine, Zoe Rahman, Phronesis, Julian Siegel, Jason Rebello and Acker Bilk, plus many more - and we’ve again added some legendary names not usually associated with Jazz, for example an appearance by Mavis Staples. Following last year’s successful collaboration, we’re also delighted that Welsh musician Huw Warren returns as artist-in-residence to continue his international collaborations, we pay homage to emerging Welsh Jazz talent, and bring back late club nights in the Market Hall. Last year’s colourful street entertainment proved so popular we’ve put together another programme for August to keep all ages entertained around town, and we will once again work closely with Brecon Fringe to put a complementary programme of free music into some of the areas in the vicinity of the official Brecon jazz venues. We hope you agree this all makes for a mouth watering line-up that sustains Brecon’s standing in the Jazz world as we look forward to next year’s 30th anniversary and the continued success of one of the UK’s finest Jazz events. Have a great time!

BRECON CATHEDRAL Atzmon is a loose cannon: a larger than life figure with an almost overpowering musical personality... it’s as perfect a jazz marriage as you could wish for. Phil Johnson, Independent on Sunday
Led by fiery saxophonist and award-winning composer Gilad Atzmon, The Orient House Ensemble was founded in London in 2000 and is renowned as one of the world’s most brilliant and inspirational jazz groups. Drawing on the music of Coltrane and Bird as well as the beautiful music of the Middle East to create something new and wonderful, the Ensemble has been touring constantly all over Europe and the UK and recorded six albums to date, have won many
awards and received constant worldwide critical acclaim. The musical history of the OHE is a story of a relentless attempt to cross the divide, blending East and West and forming a new improvisational language out of Jazz and ethnic music. Though the Ensemble blends many musical ideas and styles it is always within the Jazz idiom: the energy, the subliminal communication, the poetic pain and ecstatic laughter. The Orient House Ensemble is there to keep Jazz as a spirit of resistance: a struggle against musical stagnation and oppression of any kind.

Mavis Staples will doubtlessly go down in history as one of the greatest gospel singers of all time; the breathtaking voice powering one of America’s great family bands, The Staple Singers. From the traditional gospel music of the 1950s to the 1960s protest songs that underscored some of the decade’s most dramatic social changes, from the self-empowerment anthems of the 1970s to the soulful love tunes and mature Americana of more recent years, Staples and her family have consistently created some of the most inspirational music of the past half-century. Known as “God’s Greatest Hitmakers” The Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by their close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement.
The group signed to Stax Records in 1968, hitting the Top 40 eight times between 1971 and 1975. Beginning with her 1969 self-titled debut solo album, Mavis Staples also maintained a solo career simultaneously while she worked with The Staple Singers, releasing eight critically acclaimed solo albums during the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Now more than sixty years after she began singing with her ground-breaking family group, Mavis Staples is a certified music legend; A Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and a National Heritage Fellowship Award recipient. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll, and Rolling Stone listed her as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

JOOLS HOLLAND & HIS RHYTHM & BLUES ORCHESTRA

MARKET HALL ROLAND GIFT (THE VOICE OF FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS) FEATURING GILSON LAVIS, WITH SPECIAL GUEST
AND GUEST VOCALISTS RUBY TURNER & LOUISE MARSHALL Already an accomplished pianist playing the pubs of South East London and the East End Docks by his early teens, there was no doubt that a future in music lay ahead for the young Jools Holland. By 15 he had formed Squeeze, the group that would bring him in to the popular music lexicon at the tail end of the seventies, but few could have then predicted an ensuing career that would develop Holland in to one of the most important broadcasters and popular music scholars of modern times. Holland’s career as a television presenter on a number of culturally important music programmes (The Tube, The Happening, Night Music) has run parallel to his musical career, which has seen him sell millions of records with Squeeze, before forming The Jools Holland Big Band in 1987. The ‘Big Band’ would gradually morph into the current 20-piece Jools Holland and His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, which continues to play live to over 300,000 each year, whilst Holland’s prolific recording career has seen him sell millions of records; most notably via the Jools Holland and Friends series.
After presenting stints on Juke Box Jury and The Happening, Jools was asked in 1992 to host a new music programme for BBC2, which combined his talent as a musician with his skills as a presenter. This was Later...with Jools Holland. The show has reawakened the innovative spirit of The Tube, and is in its 41st series and 20th year. In addition to the success of ‘Later...’, Jools Holland was recognised in 2010 for his contribution to the airwaves, scooping a Sony Radio Academy Silver Award for ‘Best Specialist Music Programme’ and the Sony Gold Award for ‘Music Broadcaster Of The Year’. Jools’ achievements were formally recognized in June 2003, when he was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. As always, Jools continues to dazzle audiences across the UK with his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, and arrives at Brecon Jazz 2013 accompanied by original Squeeze drummer Gilson Lavis, special guest Roland Gift - the voice of Fine Young Cannibals, and guest vocalists Ruby Turner & Louise Marshall.

Expect an adventurous repertoire featuring elegant, classical lyricism, eerie bowed bass, deep saxophone harmonies and various rumbling, tumbling rhythms.
MR. ACKER BILK & HIS PARAMOUNT JAZZ BAND SUNDAY 11TH AUGUST | 13.30 | £20.00 (+SBF)
THEATR BRYCHEINIOG
Legendary Clarinettist Acker Bilk came to master the instrument that has now become synonymous with his name whilst being punished for sleeping on duty, during his time with the Royal Engineers in the Suez Canal Zone in 1948. Demobbed, Acker formed the Bristol Paramount Jazz Band, and set about performing across the UK and in Germany. Then in 1961 Acker recorded the phenomenally successful Stranger on the Shore, which became the first-ever recording to be number one simultaneously in the UK and USA charts, going on to sell over a million copies and even orbiting the moon aboard the Apollo 10 spacecraft. Acker Bilk has toured the world with the Paramount Jazz Band for over 60 years, as well as sharing stages with other prominent musicians such as the late

Humphrey Lyttelton and Van Morrison. In March 2001 Acker was honoured with an MBE for his services to the music industry, which was followed in 2005 with a BBC Jazz Award for his unique contribution to Jazz in the UK, and The Worshipful Company of Musicians Silver Medal for Lifetime Achievement in 2008. Now in his 80’s, The Great Master of the Clarinet continues to perform regularly with his Paramount Jazz Band, and we look forward to welcoming both to Brecon Jazz 2013 this August.
