Welcome
With heart rates back to somewhere near normal following the whirlwind 30th Anniversary year of the festival in 2014, we find ourselves readying once again to deliver another bumper Brecon Jazz busting at the seams with the wondrous talent of friends old and new, from afar and from down the road, all ready to descend on this amazing little town, where a warm welcome always awaits. I’m pleased to say that 2015 represents out most international line-up to date, and two themes that jump out of the programme this year are fantastic female vocalists and a welcome invasion from some pretty special American performers. Of the former we present a selection of beautiful voices from across the jazz spectrum, ranging from the legendary Norma Winstone MBE and the award winning Julia Biel, through the emerging Spanish star Andrea Motis to the exquisite native talent of Nia Lynn. Those journeying all the way from the States to The Struet include the “Physician of Phonk” Dr. John, who rolls into Brecon with his celebrated Louie Armstrong homage show, the increasingly influential pianist Robert Glasper, the multi-Grammy nominated Kenny Barron and Dave Holland, and undoubtedly the most requested artist of my four year tenure as Director of the festival, saxophonist and long-time Brecon friend Scott Hamilton. We welcome back a few firm festival favourites in Courtney Pine and Zoe Rahman, who unite for an intimate evening of ballads at the Cathedral, whilst one of the most exciting jazz acts on this planet, Phronesis, return to Brecon once more. There’s a debut for a new venue this year, with Brecon Elim Church joining the ranks and becoming the new location for the Western Power Kidzone. Our young person’s offering is larger than ever, with two free performances of Adriano Adewale’s celebrated Catapluf’s Musical Journey set to wow our younger audience, whilst we again hand over the stage at The Guildhall to the young musicians who attended the Junior Jazz Summer School at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Our friends at Brecon Jazz Club have teamed up with a clutch of fellow jazz societies to programme a sparkling ‘jazz guitar’ themed day at The Guildhall on Sunday afternoon, whilst the inimitable Neil Cowley brings the much vaunted tribute to his personal hero Dudley Moore to Christ College. A personal pick from me would be the Timo Lassy Band, who left such an mark on me at last year’s Jazz Ahead that I would have considered kidnap as a means of bringing the Finnish quintet to Brecon in 2015; luckily (for them and us) they were available anyway! Kicking off the festival at The Grolsch Market Hall on Friday night is the legendary former Kinks frontman Ray Davies, who will no doubt have the place rocking with classic Kinks numbers and his own amazing solo work. There really is too much to tell you about and too little space here to do it all justice, so please press on and explore our programme. I hope to see you at the festival in August.

RAY DAVIES AND BAND Friday 7 August The Grolsch Market Hall Doors: 8.30pm
Stage: 9pm
£37.50 (+SBF)
Duration: 90 Mins
Ray Davies CBE, one of the most successful and influential songwriters to emerge from the British Invasion of the 1960s, founded the rock band The Kinks with his brother Dave in London in 1964. The band’s string of 14 top ten international hits began with ‘You Really Got Me’, followed by ‘All Day and All of The Night’, ‘Tired of Waiting’, ‘Set Me Free’, ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’, ‘Sunny Afternoon’, ‘Waterloo Sunset’, ‘Lola’, ‘Apeman’ and ‘Come Dancing’ among many others. Davies has released two solo albums, a choral collection of Kinks classics and his recent collaborations album ‘See My Friends’ saw him return again to the top ten working with the likes of Metallica, Bruce Springsteen and Mumford & Sons.
2014 marked The Kinks 50th Anniversary and saw Ray Davies inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Join us at The Grolsch Market Hall on opening night as one of the greatest songwriters Britain has ever produced journeys through his songbook of Kinks hits and solo gems as we kick off of Brecon Jazz 2015. “Here, uniquely, were some of the finest tunes of the Sixties, at close quarters, with peerless sound, not in some godforsaken stadium, and delivered with warmth. Culminating with Waterloo Sunset (which was just occurring outside)... the show was an unmitigated joy.” - Andrew Perry, The Telegraph

Friday 7 August Theatr Brycheiniog Doors: 5.30pm

Pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland have been major stalwarts on the jazz scene for years, with over a dozen Grammy Award nominations between them. NEA Jazz Master Barron got his start with the Dizzy Gillespie Quartet and has been associated, amongst many other jazz luminaries, with Stan Getz, Yusef Lateef and Freddie Hubbard, in addition to his sparkling trio and solo work. Dave Holland played in Miles Davis’s rhythm section on ‘In a Silent Way’ and ‘Bitches Brew’, as well as with Stan Getz, Sam Rivers, the trio Getaway and in the avant-garde group Circle, in addition to leading his own small groups and large bands. A master of tone and rhythm, the bassist, composer and bandleader is now in his fifth decade as a performer.
“The ever soulful Barron dug deeply into the blues, nailing Holland’s tricky theme with perfectly placed accents, and as the crowd rose to their feet it was clear that the duo wouldn’t be leaving without at least one encore.” - Jazz Journal

A legend was born with his breakthrough 1968 album ‘Gris-Gris’, which introduced to the world his unique blend of voodoo mysticism, funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots. In addition to his six Grammy wins, he has received six other Grammy nominations over the years. In 2007 he was nominated for ‘Sippiana Hericane’, his Hurricane Katrina benefit disc; the same year he was also inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame. His album ‘Locked Down’, released in 2012 with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys also won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

GOGO PENGUIN Saturday 8 August Y Neuadd Goffa: The Memorial Hall, Christ College
£17.50 (+SBF)
Doors: 7.45pm
Stage: 8.15pm
Duration: 90 Mins
GoGo Penguin’s skittering break-beats, telepathic interplay and a penchant for anthemic melody all contribute to a sound that’s wholly their own. Pianist Chris Illingworth’s yearning classical influenced melodies are filtered through the dance music energy of bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Rob Turner. Their instrumentation might be the archetypal piano trio but while the melodic, harmonic and structural ideas are influenced by both classical and jazz, the rhythms are drawn from left field electronica. It’s this meeting of opposites that makes their unique acoustic-electronica sound so exciting and creates such an interesting and emotionally rich palate for the listener as drawing on a heady brew of influences from Brian Eno, John Cage and Squarepusher.
“A stirring re-evaluation of what a piano trio should sound like in the 21st Century.” - Barclaycard Mercury Prize
Their album ‘V2.0’ was a Mercury Prize album of the year 2014. 11

Robert Glasper has emerged in recent years as a massively influential musical force, as jazz expands its horizons for a new generation. Pianist, bandleader, composer, producer, he combines the language of the jazz mainstream with an edgy command of the urban music landscape. A string of recent recordings for Blue Note – including the Grammy-winning ‘Black Radio 1’, have set a new benchmark for jazz in the 21st century. In 2015, Glasper returns to the acoustic piano trio format that characterised his early breakthrough with a brand new recording that crates a dynamic and hypnotic tension between his free-wheeling improvisation and the tight and irresistible ‘grooves’ that derive from his more recent explorations into hip hop.
“This was an evening of terrific jazz as contemporary as it gets without sacrificing either the tune or the inner logic of the music. Glasper is fast turning himself into an essential player.” - The Manchester Review

Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) was an unassuming giant of modern jazz, a daring improviser, and a writer of many beautiful and slyly unorthodox tunes. His recorded legacy includes albums now regarded as contemporary jazz classics such as ‘Gnu High’, ‘Deer Wan’ and ‘Music For Large And Small Ensembles’. In December 2013 he recorded what would be his final album ‘Songs for Quintet’, at Abbey Road Studios. The album, which was recorded with four of his favourite players, was released by ECM on January 14th of this year; a date marking what would have been Kenny Wheeler’s 85th birthday. 18

In less than five years, since Chamaro spotted the young trumpeter/vocalist’s obvious potential at the age of 11, the pair have set their city and other parts of Europe ablaze with the energetic sounds of jazz from either side of the Atlantic. With 5 albums together, the duo have toured across Europe and South America, working on stage and in the studio with the likes of Dick Oatts, Scott Hamilton, Ken Peplowski, Scott Robinson and many others.

Scott Hamilton has established himself as one our foremost tenor saxophone balladeers, one with a keen ear for indelible first-rate tunes. With over 40 albums under his belt as a leader, his style has evolved from classic jazz tenor saxophone in the style of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims and Don Byas, which characterised his time on the New York scene in the 70s, to a distinctive style and tone very much of his own. At Brecon Jazz 2015 Scott Hamilton presents a special saxophone masterclass which promises to open wide his inspirations and experiences earned whilst carving out a reputation as a supreme master of the jazz saxophone across a 35+ year career.
