Soundtrack International Film and Music Festival 2012

Page 1

WELCOME/CROESO Welcome to the 4th Soundtrack International Film & Music Festival, where we once again celebrate the intrinsic relationship between music and the moving image through a programme bursting with screenings, concerts, masterclasses, panels and special events.

Croeso i 4edd Ŵyl Ffilm a Cherddoriaeth Ryngwladol Soundtrack, lle’r ydym unwaith eto yn dathlu’r berthynas gynhenid rhwng cerddoriaeth a’r ddelwedd symudol trwy raglen sy’n llawn dop o sgriniadau, cyngherddau, dosbarthiadau meistr, paneli a digwyddiadau arbennig.

Again we’ve worked hard with our partners the Film Agency for Wales, Cineworld, Chapter Arts Centre and Newport City Council to deliver a varied programme worthy of their generous support, not to mention our commitment to our festival audiences, old and new, who we hope will enjoy the fruits of our continuing quest to build something special here in South Wales.

Unwaith eto, rydym wedi gweithio’n galed gyda’n partneriaid Asiantaeth Ffilm Cymru, Cineworld, Chanolfan Gelfyddydau’r Chapter a Chyngor Tref Casnewydd i ddarparu rhaglen amrywiol sy’n deilwng o’u cefnogaeth hael, heb sôn am ein hymrwymiad i gynulleidfaoedd ein gŵyl, hen a newydd, a fydd, gobeithio, yn mwynhau ffrwyth ein cwest sy’n parhau i adeiladu rhywbeth arbennig yma yn Ne Cymru.

Launching our Mini Music Doc Award has been a particular highlight for us this year, as entries have flooded in from around the world, but I certainly don’t envy our panel of judges who will need to select our first ever winner. I’m also looking forward to welcoming two great British composers in David Arnold and David Julyan to the festival, as well the exciting Parisian director Vincent Moon, who we’ve been tracking as a guest for some time. However, if there’s one event that our team are bouncing in anticipation over, it’s our collaboration with the BFI & Sonic Cinema, in bringing House music superstar Fake Blood to Cardiff, with his live soundtrack to Dario Argento’s chilling masterpiece ‘Suspiria’, which closes the festival. I hope you’ll enjoy exploring our programme and the festival itself, and that you’ll have as much fun at the 4th annual Soundtrack as we did piecing it together for you. See you on Opening Night!

Mae lansio ein Gwobr Dogfen Gerddoriaeth Fer (Mini Music Doc Award) wedi bod yn uchafbwynt arbennig i ni eleni, gyda thoreth o gynigion yn dod i mewn o bedwar ban byd, ond nid wyf yn genfigennus o gwbl o’n panel o feirniaid a fydd yn gorfod dewis ein henillydd cyntaf erioed. Rwy’n edrych ymlaen hefyd at groesawu dau gyfansoddwr mawr Prydeinig, sef David Arnold a David Julyan, i’r ŵyl, yn ogystal â’r cyfarwyddwr ifanc cyffrous o Paris, Vincent Moon, yr ydym wedi bod yn ceisio ei gael fel gŵr gwadd ers peth amser. Fodd bynnag, os oes un digwyddiad y mae ein tîm ar bigau’r drain yn ei ddisgwyl, hwnnw yw ein cydweithrediad gyda’r BFI (Sefydliad Ffilm Prydain) a Sonic Cinema, i ddod â Fake Blood, seren fawr cerddoriaeth House, i Gaerdydd gyda’i drac sain byw i gampwaith iasol Dario Argento, sef ‘Suspiria’, sy’n dod â’r ŵyl i ben. Rwy’n gobeithio y byddwch yn mwynhau archwilio ein rhaglen a’r ŵyl ei hun, ac y cewch chi gymaint o hwyl yn y 4edd ŵyl Soundtrack flynyddol ag y cawsom ni wrth ei pharatoi ar eich cyfer. Welwn ni chi ar y Noson Agoriadol!

VINCENT MOON PRESENTS ‘PETITES PLANÈTES’

SATURDAY 17TH NOVEMBER | 14.00

CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE FREE ENTRY / REGISTER AT SOUNDTRACKFILMFESTIVAL.COM It was whilst studying photography at the Atelier Reflexe in Montreuil, under the guidance of photographers Michael Ackerman and Antoine D’Agata, that Parisian director Vincent Moon first began his journey in filmmaking. Photodocumenting the Parisian nightlife for his Les Nuits de Fiume blog, he would set his photographs in motion using simple slideshow techniques and music to tell stories. Over the next two years he would create short films that mixed intimate storytelling and experimental techniques, and also became involved in directing low-fi video for bands such as Clogs, Sylvain Chauveau and The National. From his work with these artists, he then started his influential online project La Blogothèque’s ‘Take Away Shows’; a series of improvised outdoor video sessions with musicians, set in unexpected locations and broadcast freely on the web. During the run of the four year project he worked with over 200 bands including R.E.M, Arcade Fire, Sigur Rós, The Shins, Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes.

7

The New York Times presented the project’s impact as “Vincent Moon reinvented the music video”, with the concept and style of his work inspiring a new generation of music video directors. That style was heralded by R.E.M’s Michael Stipe, and they went on to collaborate on several videos for the band including a web project related to their album ‘Accelerate’. But in 2008, he would find inspiration for his biggest project to date, Petite Planètes. Packing his camera in a rucksack and hitting the road, Vincent Moon set about exploring and recording traditional music, religious rituals, and relationships between music and trance across five continents. Never buying a return ticket and relying on local connections when travelling from one location to another, his focus lies with the traditions of the country he visits. A modern day Alan Lomax, these ‘experimental ethnography’ films are released through his ‘nomadic label’ Petites Planètes. Join Vincent Moon at Soundtrack, as he talks through his global adventures with a camera, and screens a selection of his newest work from his travels in Ethiopia, Russia, Ukraine and Indonesia, capturing rituals, shamanic trances and ancient old songs in disappearing languages.

CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE FREE ENTRY / REGISTER AT SOUNDTRACKFILMFESTIVAL.COM

Join acclaimed composer David Julyan onstage with BAFTA at Soundtrack Film Festival for a special craft masterclass on his career. David Julyan began writing music for short films whilst studying at University College London. It was here that David first collaborated with director Christopher Nolan and scored Nolan’s first feature Following (1998). Shot with little money on weekends over a six month period, Following went on to become an unexpected Indie hit. His work is best known through his further collaborations with Nolan, Memento (2000), Insomnia (2002) and The Prestige (2006), helping to cement David’s style for seamlessly blending orchestra with atmospheric electronics to produce subtle and brooding scores.

their craft and deliver an on-stage session about their creative processes. This event forms part of BAFTA’s UK-wide learning and events programme, giving audiences across the country access behind the screens to the film, TV and video games industries. Subtlety was put aside for the score to Neil Marshall’s horror film The Descent (2005) giving David the opportunity to create one of his biggest works to date, with its dramatic use of orchestra and choir. Although best known for his dark and atmospheric scores, David has also scored films like the heart-warming Irish drama Inside I’m Dancing. His most recent work released in April 2012 is The Cabin In The Woods, a clever twist on the traditional horror format from Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon.

Now, bolder and braver, Sean returns with ‘SEANSMITHSUCKS.TV: A RETROSPECTIVE’ - a candid and unflinching documentary focused on the process of creating, as well as botching, much of the aforementioned show. Following the premiere of ‘SEANSMITHSUCKS. TV: A RETROSPECTIVE’ audience members will be invited to ask questions which Sean, with basic syntax, will attempt to answer. Struggling to finish his screenplay ‘Seven Psychopath’s’, screenwriter Marty (Colin Farrell) becomes inadvertently entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld thanks to his oddball friends Billy (Sam Rockwell) and Hans (Christopher Walken), a pair of part-time dog thieves.

THE MINERS’ HYMNS + PERFORMANCE & IN CONVERSATION WITH TYLORSTOWN BAND

DAVID BOWIE AND THE STORY OF ZIGGY STARDUST +Q&A WITH DIRECTOR JAMES HALE & EXECUTIVE PRODUCER RYAN MINCHIN (FOR BBC WALES)

THURSDAY15TH NOVEMBER | 20.30

FRIDAY16TH NOVEMBER | 12.30

2010 / BILL MORRISON / 50 MINS

CITY CENTRE CAMPUS

CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE The Miners’ Hymns is a homage in film and music to the coal mining history of North East England. Bill Morrison pieces together a collage of archive footage spanning 100 years - from early film of primitive conditions, through processes of increased mechanisation, and up to the pitched battles with police during the 1984 strike. A haunting, beautiful elegy to a bygone era, The Miners’ Hymns celebrates the sense of vibrant community, rich, self-organised culture and the forbearance that characterised the dangerous lives of those who worked underground. The Miners’ Hymns will be preceded by music from members of Tylorstown Band, who will also take part in an In Conversation on their experiences as a colliery band during the Miners’ Strikes, and the day they led the Miners’ back to work at Maerdy Colliery. What’s the score?: Brass bands began in County Durham, and became integral to the mining communities. Acclaimed Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannson’s score draws upon the region’s brass music culture and provides an elegiac and atmospheric soundtrack to Morrison’s cinematic images.

15

NEWPORT UNIVERSITY 2012 / DIRECTED BY JAMES HALE / 60 MINS / FREE SCREENING (REGISTER AT SOUNDTRACKFILMFESTIVAL.COM) The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is arguably the most important album in the mind-blowing career of David Bowie. Released in 1972, it’s the record that set the mercurial musician on course to becoming one of the best-known pop stars on the planet. In just over a year, Bowie’s messianic Martian invaded the minds of the nation’s youth with a killer combination of extraterrestrial rock ‘n’ roll and outrageous sexuality, all delivered in high-heeled boots, multi-coloured dresses and extravagant make-up. In Bowie’s own words, Ziggy was ‘a cross between Nijinsky and Woolworths’, but this unlikely culture clash worked - Ziggy turned Bowie into stardust. Narrated by fan Jarvis Cocker, this documentary tells the story of how Bowie arrived at one of the most iconic creations in the history of pop music. The songs, the hairstyles, the fashion and the theatrical stage presentation merged together to turn David Bowie into the biggest craze since the Beatles. Ziggy’s instant success gave the impression that he was the perfectlyplanned pop star. But, as the film reveals, it had been a momentous struggle for David Bowie to hit on just the right formula that would take him to the top.

SOUND OF NOISE

THE LEGEND OF KASPAR HAUSER

FRIDAY 16TH NOVEMBER | 18.00

FRIDAY 16TH NOVEMBER | 20.15

2010 / DIRECTED BY OLA SIMONSSON & JOHANNES STJÄRNE NILSSON 110 MINS / ENGLISH SUBTITLES

2012 / DIRECTED BY DAVIDE MANULI 95 MINS / ENGLISH SUBTITLES

Police Detective Amadeus Warnebring was born into a family of illustrious musicians – which is deeply ironic, given that he loathes music with a passion.

This techno western starring Vincent Gallo in two roles, finds the mysterious Hauser washed up on a beach, almost dead, with big headphones on his ears and his name emblazoned on his naked torso. Lost in an uncertain time and place, Kaspar Hauser must measure himself against the evil of a Grand Duchess who feels her power over the community is threatened, and who seeks help from the Pusher (Gallo), a criminal who knows how to free her of the “enemy”. Too bad he hasn’t taken into account the Sheriff (also Gallo!), a DJ who considers Kaspar to be the new Messiah.

CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE

His existence is thrown into chaos when a gang of delinquent sonic terrorists decides to enact a full-scale musical assault in the name of anarchy and freedom using the city – its buildings, its machinery, and its ceaseless noise – as their orchestra. Inspired by their internationally acclaimed, multi award-winning short Music For One Apartment and Six Drummers, Sound of Noise is the first feature from Swedish directors Simonsson & Nilsson, and winner of the Young Critics Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2010. What’s the score?: No surface is undrummable as composers Magnus Börjeson, Fred Avril and foley artist / sonic genius Nicolas Becker unleash an elusive gang of six activist drummers on unsuspecting Malmö. The beat goes on, at all costs!

SOUNDTRACKFESTIVAL

CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE

What’s the score?: The second film written and directed by Davide Manuli, The Legend of Kaspar Hauser is a surreal post-modern western tale, in beautiful black and white and powered by the earth shaking beats of techno giant Vitalic.

SOUNDTRACK KIDS SCREENING

RANGO

SHOCK CORRIDOR

+Q&A WITH THE BBFC’S CRAIG LAPPER

SATURDAY 17TH NOVEMBER | 11.00 & 15.00

SATURDAY 17TH NOVEMBER | 21.00

2011 / DIRECTED BY GORE VERBINSKI / 107 MINS

1963 / DIRECTED BY SAMUEL FULLER / 101 MINUTES

Rango (Johnny Depp), a pet chameleon who becomes stranded in the Mojave Desert after his terrarium falls from his owner’s car, finds himself in the parched desert town of Dirt. Using bravado and improvisation to fit in, the chameleon presents himself to the townsfolk as a tough drifter named Rango, but quickly runs afoul of Dirt’s outlaw Bad Bill (Ray Winstone).

Shock Corridor is the tale of Johnny Barrett, a fame-obsessed big city reporter on a quest to win the Pulitzer Prize, by cracking an unsolved murder case in the local state mental hospital. Posing as a sexual deviant, Barrett is sent to the hospital as a patient, quickly learning that the murder was witnessed by three insane patients who in their moments of clarity could provide Johnny with the clues to discovering the murderer. Unfortunately his own mental condition has been deteriorating and he just might find the price he must pay for a Pulitzer may be the highest of all.

CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE

Dirt citizens are desperately in need of water, but they also need a hero and a sheriff… Could Rango be the hero they need? Can he find the missing water? What’s the score?: Hollywood heavyweight Hans Zimmer clocks in with a score as zany as Rango himself, jumping from Mariachi yodeling to classical, and even some industrial metal!

CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE

Presented as part of the BBFC’S Centenary Celebrations, Shock Corridor is the aptly named 1963 B-movie psychodrama from the vigorously independent mind of American auteur Samuel Fuller. Filled with taboos – cannibalistic nymphomaniacs, the suggestions of incest and the mandatory electroshock sequence – Shock Corridor encourages the audience to question both society and morality. What’s the score?: Peter Breck stars as the slowly unwinding Johnny Barrett, who’s carried off to psychotic hinterlands on the unstoppable wave of Paul Dunlap’s crashing orchestral score.

CAPE FEAR

BONES BRIGADE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY SUNDAY 18TH NOVEMBER | 13.00

SUNday 18th November | 17.00

2012 / DIRECTED BY STACY PERALTA / 90 MINUTES

1962 / J. LEE THOMPSON / 102 MINS

Bones Brigade: An Autobiography is a very personal story of a group of young, straight laced American kids who achieved the impossible through a combination of work, skill, passion, and the belief that anything is possible: they succeeded in turning skateboarding from a fringe pastime to a thrilling action sport filled with extraordinary gravity defying feats and generated a billion dollar industry. The Bones Brigade was the team they formed that revolutionised not only their lives, but international popular culture as well.

Presented as part of the BBFC’S Centenary Celebrations

CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE

Directed by the Bones Brigade founder Stacy Peralta (Dogtown and Z-Boys), the film shows an inside view in to the life of the group and their views on the life they lived and where it has led them today. Taking them from a gang of misfits who blasted the industry with a mixture of art, raw talent, mind blowing tricks and the belief that anything is possible, to become the most popular skateboarding team in history. Competition: Ticket buyers get a chance to win one of 10 limited edition skateboards, designed by artists Bedwyr Williams, Juneau Projects, David Burrows and Ross Sinclair (Manufactured by A Third Foot, using FSC Canadian Maple). Prize generously donated by S Mark Gubb: www.smarkgubb.com

CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE After spending eight years in prison for rape, Max Cady (Robert Mitchum) is released and promptly tracks down Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck), a small town Georgia lawyer who put him there. Cady intends to make Bowden’s life torturous, stalking his wife and 14-year-old daughter. In an attempt to hide from Cady, Bowden and his family hide out in the aptly named Cape Fear, but Cady is soon hot on their heels. The question now is how far will the law abiding Bowden go to protect his family? What’s the score?: Herrmann’s creepy, Triton dominated score perfectly echoes the psychotic menace inside Cady’s head. Martin Scorsese thought it so appropriate it was lifted completely intact for his 1991 remake.

MUSIC @ SOUNDTRACK + After months hidden away in her parents’ basement recording debut album Like I Used To, Lucy Rose, one of Britain’s fastest rising young talents, arrives in Cardiff as part of an extensive autumn UK tour.

The beauty of her cracked porcelain voice can spread warmth through the iciest of hearts, and her exceptional debut album is a confessional of disarming intimacy and candid truth. We are pleased to welcome such an exceptional new talent to Soundtrack 2012.

One of the most eccentric psychedelic bands of the late sixties and early seventies, the legendary Gong turned 43 in 2012, continuing their long and often dislocated history by uniting founding members Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth with a young fresh vibrant band reminiscent of the early Gong years. We are pleased to welcome such a unique and truly original band to Soundtrack 2012.
