Volume 1 Spring 2013 Number 1

A Message from the President‌ ______________ It is a pleasure to introduce you to the first issue of Heritage Happenings, a publication of the newly established Friends of Oakwood Cemetery, Macomb, Illinois. This first issue outlines the purposes of the organization. Oakwood Cemetery is a special place in terms of its art, architecture, horticulture, and history, and our group expects to assist the city in maintaining and enhancing its features.

In addition, this issue, like subsequent ones, will provide updates related to the cemetery, announcements of upcoming events, and a historical feature. It is our hope that this newsletter will be a significant source of current information and history. Sincerely, Tom Carper

What is the Friends of Oakwood Cemetery?

T

he Friends

of Oakwood Cemetery T is a non-profit organization with a variety of cultural and practical functions‌

 To promote the cemetery as a symbol of community—a place where visitors can interact, through remembrance, with people of the past, a parallel to the present Macomb, or as town historian Alex Holmes put it, a “Silent City.”

 To recall the early vision of the cemetery as a parklike setting suited to meditation and communion with nature and to therefore support its upkeep and beautification.

The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery  To be a committed advisory/advocacy group that considers need for improvements, whether those are to be community funded or separately funded.

 To raise funds for the

cemetery, through donations and bequests.

 To maintain contact with relatives of those buried at Oakwood Cemetery, through a newsletter and a website and in doing so to enlarge support beyond present town residents.

 To develop cultural events connected with the cemetery, which might include

tours, monument dedications or rededications, dramatic performances, etc.

 To acquire a richer compilation of historical information about the cemetery and the people buried there, including soldiers of most wars.  To cooperate fully with the cemetery sexton and the various governing

bodies of the City of Macomb.
