A Letter from Liz

Summer. When you are a kid, it means ice cream, baseball, local fairs, vacation, camp, reading for fun and most importantly, no school. As adults, we often forget these simple joys of summer and it becomes just another season. Several members took time out of their busy schedules to enjoy the summer and volunteered during Heritage Days. They enjoyed the beautiful summer day serving pancakes and seeing old friends. They volunteered and they had fun! So take a moment this summer, volunteer, enjoy the local fairs, take a walk, eat some ice cream on a random Tuesday and find a good book to read. Don’t let the summer pass you by…get out and enjoy it! See you at the meeting!!

Heritage Days window display Macomb Altrusa had a window display for the Heritage Days Festival – it was up from June 24July 1 in the “Vitamin Lady Shoppe” on the corner of Jackson and Lafayette Streets. Here are photos for those of you who did not get a chance to see it!

Idea - if any members have a business with a display window

– would you be willing to “host” an Altrusa window display for a few days, week, month? It would be another way for us to spread the word about our great organization!

Thank you from the Colchester Lions regarding helping at the Pancake Breakfast at the Heritage Days Fly-in at the airport!

Altrusa Bazaar Publicity Committee Meeting, July 15, 2013

The Publicity Committee for the Annual Bazaar met on Monday, July 15th @ 6:30 p.m. at Marsha McCormick’s. Present: Nancy Dobey, Lin Stults and Marsha McCormick. Discussed the Flyer. Making a correction and then it will be ready to print. Nancy mentioned we have 3 good Banners and 3 Coke Banners (2 in bad shape). We have 12-13 Yard Signs. Frames are broken on some. Nancy priced the cost of replacing the signs. They are $20 each. We probably don’t need more. It costs nothing to update with new dates. We decided to purchase 1 new banner from Sign makers and ask Coke for a new one. Nancy will take care of updating and ordering the signs and fixing the broken frames. We plan to have signs and banners available at the September meeting. With the members help they should be displayed and in place by October 1st. The following is places we discussed putting the large banners: 1. Wesley Village (Nancy contact), 2. Countryview Nursing Home (Nancy contact), 3. Wal mart (will contact Lara), 4. Enchanted Florist (Marsha to contact Nancy), 5. 9 Mile Y junction by the elevator (east of Macomb) (Lin will contact Terry Rouse), 6. Yesterday Treasurer @ Good Hope junction (Lin will contact).

Lin Stults, wanted to share the following message with all the members. The Colchester Lions Club was SO HAPPY that we helped them again this year. In ticket sales, they sold over 1,600 Breakfasts! Could not have done it without our help – very complimentary! Colchester Lions Club is looking forward to helping us again with the Altrusa Bazaar! If anyone happened to pick up the Blue bag with the aprons --- Please let me know. Want to wash them and get them ready for Labor Day in Colchester September 1st & 2nd. Check your calendars for those dates.

All members be sure to mark your calendars NOW for volunteering on Sept. 1 and Sept. 2 at Colchester for Labor Day – this is a super FUN way to help out the Lions! Who’s ready to wrap some steamburgers with me? See you on Labor Day at the Food Tent!

Signs are as follows: 1. Industry @ Bev Stuckwitch (lin to contact) 2. Colchester – (Nancy ) 3. E. Jackson St. – Quick Printers (Marsha) 4. A sign will be put up either at Nancy Dobey’s or at Mayor Mike Inman’s corner 5. W. Jackson – Hollister Plumbing (Lin will contact) 6. W. Grant – Rochelle Seavers – (Nancy will contact) 7. Penny Pollock corner Franklin/Madison 8. W. Adams (looking for someone who knows someone) 9. Flower Junction –Bushnell – (Lin will talk to Doug) 10. Blandinsville – (Lin will talk to Rhonda) 11. E. University Dr. (Talked about the corner of Pearl & E. University) 12. Thelma Smiddy – W. Washington St. Nancy Dobey talked to Prestige radio about the cost to do a Remote again during the Bazaar and has not yet heard back. This year more attention should be paid to steering interviews to their table. Nancy suggested placing their table in mid floor, in the commons between the two entry halls for more visibility and assign different members to check with them periodically. We will attempt to steer members and vendors to the table for interviews. Lin has started lining up volunteers for the bazaar. She has spoken with Jennifer in the English Dept, Wave, Colchester Lions, SRC Nursing students, Young Business Professionals, and Marsha gave her Courtney Powelson name tonight. Nancy suggested we find a person to setup a publicity plan and write articles for the media geared toward attracting first vendors, then shoppers, then publicity for Altrusa projects..i.e. tutoring, scholarships, etc. Publicity should cover all area media sources. It was commented that Cassie Slater is very energetic at the McDonough Voice. Heather will help us again with computer informational programs about the Bazaar…i.e. Facebook, etc. She has wonderful resources. Marsha will take care of the Red Letter Dates for the Peoria Journal Star. Marsha will also contact the Macomb Chamber for an appointment to send the flyers with the October Newsletter. We will meet as needed and request membership help as needed.

“Just a minute with a member” Each month we will feature a Macomb Altrusan - to learn a little bit more about each other!

Say Hello to Karen Iveresen, our featured member of the month! Karen – tell us a little bit about yourself… I came to Macomb in 1966 to attend WIU and only left for a short 18 months before I got my degree to "figure out what I wanted to do." I met my husband to be and never left. We have 3 children and 5 grandchildren ranging in age from 17 to 4.

Alaska someday. We have also traveled to NY, France, Italy, Sweden and Denmark. I also like to read and LOVE to shop, but I don't have to spend money to have fun, because I usually travel with friends to shop!

How did you get involved with Altrusa? I attended the Altrusa bazaar for A LOT of years, but really didn't know what Altrusa was all about until I met a former member, Betty Lewis. She thought I might be interested in joining because I worked in education. I attended a couple of meetings, liked the women and the rest is history!

How have you been involved with Altrusa? Karen reading to her grandkids

What type of work have you done? I worked as a school counselor at the jr./sr. high level for 20 years, then at Lincoln for the last 6 years of my career.

What do you like to do for fun? I love to travel, especially to see the grandkids in Seattle and Southern CA. I can proudly say I have been in all of the 48 states on the mainland. Hopefully I may make it to Hawaii and

I have not really had many different "jobs" as an Altrusan. I have served on the board as a director a couple of different times, served as president for one year, and recording secretary for 2 years. Now I help Sandy Collier and Jean Sowers with coordinating the tutoring program.

What do you like best about being a member of Altrusa? Making new friends through Altrusa has been great, but knowing we are helping others learn and meet their educational goals is probably why I stay an Altrusa member.

Would you like to be in the next “Just a minute with a member”? Who will be our next featured member? Be like Karen this month!  answer the 6 questions like she did  send me a photo @ hrmunro@yahoo.com That’s all there is to it and you could be in our next newsletter! Finance Committee members at the June meeting Kristi Kupka, Liz Duvall, Nancy Dobey, Marsha McCormick
