Altrusa International of Macomb June 25, 2014 General Meeting
Standing committee report was small due to no one meeting: Heather Munro said that she has shared pictures of the Altrusa Heritage Days display window, found at Lil’ Stitches, on Facebook and the photo was shared in Puerto Rico, and commented on from India! Also, she passed around a photo in the McDonough Voice of our installation.
Potluck enjoyed before the meeting Board of Directors hosted the meeting: Planning for 2014-2015. President Cindy Roon called the meeting to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was said. No guests were present. Minutes of the May meeting were approved. The motion was approved by Liz Duvall, seconded by Kathy Wyatt, motion carried. The Treasurer’s Report was amended by Sandy Collier to say that there we are actually paying to have 23 students tutored, while one is on scholarship. We are not paying for all 24 students to be tutored. Correspondence was read by Sara Featherlin from the YMCA seeking donations and a resignation letter from Kelly Shiraki.
Old Business: Sandy Collier provided an update on tutoring. Tutors have been matched with students. One student has suffered a death in the family and may not be able to continue-but they’re working to try to get all the sessions in. New Business: Lin passed around a sign-up sheet for the Pancake Breakfast to be held on Sunday, June 29. The Colchester Lion’s Club helps us tremendously with the bazaar, so she encouraged us to help them. This year they’re expecting 2000 people, and they’ve gotten an 8foot griddle to cook! We received a $500 Walmart Foundation grant. This money will be restricted for tutoring. Thanks to Karen Trusley for doing the application! We need to think about what we want to do about Adopt-A-Classroom, as Mrs. Ramos will no longer be at Lincoln School next year. Miriam mentioned that she felt we should continue to do this program, as we have budgeted for it. It was generally agreed that we’d like to continue, but we need to think about who we want to sponsor and discuss it at the July meeting. Due to Kelly Shiraki’s resignation, we need to find another Vice President. Jean Sowers offered to take over the role, while Heather Munro will
do the yearbook. Motion was made for Jean to be the Vice-president by Liz Duvall, seconded by Lin Stults, motion carried.

that this year’s budget is a “conservative” one, and maybe we could revisit being members next year. In the meanwhile, any member of the Chamber can submit information for the Altrusa Bazaar. Marsha McCormick noted that just paying Chamber dues doesn’t take care of the charge to include flyers in the newsletter-which is $25 and a minimum of 600 copies. Announcements: Next board meeting is Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. at the Everly House. Next general meeting is Wednesday, July 23, 2014; at the Everly House at 7 p.m., Hosts are the Service Committee members.
Nancy Dobey brought to our attention that due to our failure to renew our Chamber of Commerce membership, no one from the Chamber will come speak to the club. She asked if this was a club decision and it was discussed that the Board made the initial decision in order to balance the budget and brought it to the group. Much discussion was held at that meeting, but it was passed that we would no longer be involved. Nancy Dobey requested we pass the hat, and continue our membership. Nancy Jameson voiced concern that this will set a precedent that anytime a member feels that we need to sponsor something, we will always pass a hat. She indicated there were things she’d wanted in the budget that didn’t pass, and that’s part of balancing the budget. Miriam Satern advised
Motion to adjourn was made by Penny Pollock and seconded by Sara Featherlin, motion passed and we said the Altrusa benediction. Committees then met and planned. “Leading to a Better Community” As part of the annual Heritage Days Festival celebrations, The Altrusa Club of Macomb mounted a window display in the Lil' Stitches Embroidery shop on the Historic McDonough County Courthouse Square. Thank you to owner Sue Mason of Lil' Stitches for letting us put up our display! Hundreds of people visited the square during the Festival and walked by this window – it was a great way to let folks know more about Altrusa! There was a tremendous crowd and there was never a lag in getting people seated, fed and fed some more! The Satern Family Corn Casserole Recipe shared by Altrusa member Miriam Satern “My mom made this dish and my sister and I continue to make it for family dinners such as Thanksgiving.” (Don’t you just love the exact amounts – just like our mothers used!) 1 can kernel corn, drained 1 can cream style corn
Crumble one stack of Keebler’s soda crackers. Scramble one egg and add to the above mixture. Add chopped onions to taste. Add milk until the mixture is slightly soupy. Pour mixture into a 2-quart casserole dish. Put squares of butter on top and add pepper to taste. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes until bubbly. Enjoy!
She is resting, relaxing, and feeling better every day. She is still at Grand Prairie. She says Hello to all and appreciates the recovery wishes!

Say Hello to Nancy Dobey, Our Featured Member of the Month! Nancy, tell us a little about yourself: I’m a native of McDonough County, born in Emmet Twp. (close to Spring Creek). I attended Oak Grove and Yard one-room schools through 6th grade, then Edison Junior High and graduated from MHS in 1958 and a trade school in Omaha NE that same year. My sister and I were real “tomboys”. We spent hours in the woods with a hatchet and a saw building lean-tos. My dad was a firm believer in “women’s lib” long before it was fashionable. As the oldest, I was the “hired” hand the one responsible one for tractor-work, baling hay, gardening, milking, and lots of chores. When I met my husband, I could throw a bale of hay or move a 10-gallon can of milk farther and better than he. As a 10 year 4H member, I learned the importance of “volunteering”. What type of work have you done in your life? After graduating from trade school, I came back to McDonough County to work. In January 1959, I was hired by J. Binnie Wolfe, President of Citizens National Bank, as his Secretary. For more than 55 years, I have been at the Bank, working in many capacities: Teller, Loan Cashier; Bookkeeper; Customer Service; New Accounts; even Maintenance Supervisor at one point. In the 1980’s, I was named Asst. Cashier, and one of only a few women Farm Loan Officers in the State of IL. I NEVER had to wait in line for a restroom when I attended Farm Loan School or meetings. After that, I was Asst. VP of Retail Banking, and created the bank’s Loan Review Program, which was new to banking at that time. Then for several years, I was Coordinator of Senior Services, also a new marketing concept at that time. During that period, I was in charge of building and maintaining the Bank’s Senior Programs, which included developing a travel program. In 2009, the Bank was sold to Morton Community Bank. I now work as a Deposit Counselor with CD’s and savings bonds, and still have many senior customers. How did you get involved with Altrusa? Wanda Black was my Altrusa Sponsor; Alta Sargent initiated me in December of 1994.
How have you been involved with Altrusa? I have served as Club Treasurer, Secretary, PresidentElect, President, Past President, First VP, Director, and Chair of Communications, Finance, Membership, and Bazaar Kitchen Committees, as well as many ad hoc committees, a few offices more than once. What do you like to do for fun? My hobbies are family, walking, and gardening. Past volunteer work includes 4-H Leader, den mother, SRC adult literacy tutor, and United Way volunteer. A partial list of Committees served are MHS Advisory Board and various school committees, Heritage Days Flower Show, Macomb Balloon Rally, L.I.F.E., Alzheimer’s Walk (15 years), and SRC/RLI Planning. I have been a charter member or chair for some of these Committees. In addition to Altrusa, I currently work on the local AARP/CEO Committee and as a Miss Macomb Scholarship Pageant Volunteer. Anything else you would like to add? In 1972, my husband and I opened a business, Dobey’s Radiator Repair. While working at the Bank in the daytime, I “burned the midnight oil” for 30 years as Bookkeeper for that business. Starting at age 10 or younger, all of our children worked with their Dad, unless they had another job. Our oldest son still operates the garage today. Our children are Shawn, Russell, and Sara. Shawn lives in Macomb and married Penny in 2005, adding two grandchildren to our family, Samantha Wilson (22) and Colin Wilson (20). Shawn operates the business and works hard at his real love, referee or umpire for area football, baseball, softball, and basketball). Russ and Laura are in St. Charles MO. They have two children, Ryan (17) and Megan (11). Russ is a network support supervisor at the Edward Jones Home Office. He also volunteers as a local coach for a league baseball team. Sara married Jeremy Semonis. They live with their two children, Evan (11) and Zachary (6) in Normal IL. Sara is Director of Dance at ISU. She is recognized in the dance education field as a teacher/dancer/choreographer. For the past two years, she has supervised a group of dance exchange students to Brazil. Sara was Miss Macomb in 1992.
