Can you believe it is already mid-July and we are more than halfway through 2015?! I am really looking forward to this year and to our many projects and events that we will be taking part in. We have some really exciting speakers, lots of yummy food, and of course, many good times to come. Sometimes we go through tough times professionally, personally, and even as a club. It is times like these that having fellow Altrusans to "lean on" is really helpful. Please be sure to be sensitive to what others are going through. We need to be sure to treat each other with respect and appreciate our differences and move forward together. I am certainly not trying to be sappy here (although I tend to be); however, I do want you all to know how much each of you means to me. Last week when my grandma was in the hospital, I had three members reach out to me and ask how she was and if they could help in any way. That meant the world to me. It's that kind of group compassion that can show others who we are and what we stand for. We are a great organization to be a member of. Let's continue to extend our kindness and compassion for others out into the Macomb community. Whether it is through Habitat for Humanity, collecting books for children, adopting classrooms at Lincoln, organizing an amazing summer tutoring program or assisting at the fly-in or Labor Day--we can and do make a difference. You all ROCK in my book! Karen T.

Service Committee

The Service Committee has met twice since the Strategic Planning session in June. They have determined a number of possible activities for future months. They are in the process of contacting potential sites where we may volunteer.

Service Opportunity! Sat. July 18 – 9am-noon

Thank you from Lions Club On Behalf of the Colchester Lions Club, I would like to thank all the Altrusa members that worked or ate pancakes at the Fly-In Breakfast over the Heritage Days Weekend. I know sometimes it is hard for us to shake lose a few hours to help with this project, as we have other obligations on this particularly busy weekend. I appreciate your dedication and willingness to help with this activity. As many of you know, we had a tremendous crowd until the rain. And at this writing, fascinatingly enough, it is still raining! Thanks again for all your help. Kathy Wyatt

Volunteering in our Community!

The Service Committee is asking for your help with the Habitat for Humanity House at 1416 E. Pierce Street, in Macomb on Saturday July 18th. It is my understanding that they do not need lunches, but may need painters or help with drywall. I am asking people to arrive at the house at 9:00-12:00, and possibly stay for lunch. Thanks in advance for your help. The Habitat affiliate is also looking for new Board members, so if this is a way that you would like to serve the community, it is a great way to serve. Kathy Wyatt, former Board member

Wasn’t it fun? A little rain could not dampen our spirits!

Just a minute with a member Each month we will feature a Macomb Altrusan - to learn a little bit more about each other! “Minute” by Karen Iversen, Communications Committee member

Say “Hello” to Karen Trusley, our featured member of the month!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When I was 3 months old, we moved to Illinois and have remained here most of my life. I grew up in Carthage and graduated in 2002 from Carthage High School. I then attended Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois where I obtained my Bachelors Degree in Communication and Rhetorical Studies in 2006. Western Illinois University was my next stop in life where I completed my Masters Degree in Sport Management in 2010. Since then, I have moved a few times, but ultimately have come back to Carthage or Macomb every time. What type of work have you done? Since I was about 12 years old, I have done various jobs such as babysitting, working at Bill's Food Store in Carthage, working in Admissions and for the football team at

Illinois College, and working for the football team at Western Illinois University. Following high school and college, I have been an Admissions Counselor at Iowa Wesleyan College; I worked for Home Instead Senior Care and Distinct Choice Mature Living Solutions in Franklin, Wisconsin, and most recently, at Western Illinois University in Human Resources and now in the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access. Tell us about your involvement with Altrusa. I have been a member of the Communications and Membership Committees and have served as chair. I am currently the President of our chapter and I am honored to have been elected to this position. I have worked at the bazaar, helped with service projects, and I look forward to what the future holds for our club. What do you like to do for fun? I love spending time with my family. My grandparents and my mom live very close by so we see them often. I enjoy attending Karsyn's (my daughter) events, whether she is playing basketball, soccer, dancing, or putting on a theatrical performance. I also enjoy meeting new people and shopping. Please tell us something we may not know about you. My favorite meal is hot dogs and baked beans. I was a cheerleader for three years at CHS and I also cheered for one basketball season at Illinois College. What else would you like to tell our members? I really enjoy being a part of our club and I am really looking forward to it growing in membership and continuing to do great service for our community.

Our Favorite Recipes Recipes gathered by Lara Lessard, Communications Committee member This recipe comes from Brae Hattaway

Grandma’s Bread Pudding Brae’s recipe is a simple take on bread pudding that has been passed down from generation to generation on her mother’s side of the family. Her mom told her that it might have originated with her Great-Great Grandmother or even before her. She likes to take it to potlucks at work and said everyone raves about it. Her family also makes it for breakfast on Christmas morning.

Reader’s Corner Reviews gathered by Ann Abbot, Communications Committee member Featuring the favorite books of our members! What is your favorite book or what are you reading now?

Ann Abbott: I am reading Sisters of the Heart: The Trilogy by Shelley Shepard Gray.

6 Slices of Bread 2 ½ cup of Milk ½ tsp vanilla 1 cup sugar

Sisters of the Heart consists of three stories:

6 eggs

Hidden: Escaping an abusive boyfriend, Anna finds refuge at a B&B with her friend, Katie.

Cinnamon and sugar mixture Butter both sides of bread and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar on both sides. Stack three slices of bread on top of each other making two stacks side by side in a 6x10 baking dish. Combine and whisk the milk, vanilla, sugar, and eggs together. Pour the mixture over the two stacks of bread. Use all of the custard mixture. Make sure that the custard gets in between each layer of bread. Bake In the oven for one hour at 325 degrees. Pour a little cream over top of each serving.

Wanted: Katie is frightened by how far she strayed during her Rumspringa. Her love for Jonathan could be destroyed by her past. Forgiven: Jonathan seeks vengeance on an arsonist. But in an Amish community founded on grace and forgiveness, will Jonathan’s unwillingness to forgive ruin the trust that forms the foundation of their lives. Recommendation of this book: I love to read and have read other books by Shelley Shepard Gray. I enjoy reading about the Amish and learning about their lifestyle.
